WHAT I KNOW ABOUT GOAL SETTING

WRAPPING UP THE YEAR, is a lot like wrapping up Christmas presents. We have these memories and milestones...

... to look back on later.

    Gifts to ourselves.

What if we knew what gifts we'd be wrapping up for ourselves next year?

Would we plan our 2026 calendar differently?

    Change up our goals...

... if their accomplishment was a given?

Now that you've done that little thought experiment, I'll share this with you.

The biggest accomplishments in my past were never concerned with...

    • little details
    • strategies
    • tactics

    ... only What.

From there it was just a matter of making it real.

HR TRAINING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE the joy of climbing with friends to a distant peak and poking through the clouds. Summiting is like having...

... the top of the world to ourselves.

    All is calm.

Bombing down the mostly unfamiliar other side...

    ... not so calm.

Heaven forbid we'd let a gap open and get left behind.

Already on the edge of grip, I came into a sweeping lefthand turn...

... a negative radius, sloping downward.

I drifted all the way wide to the soft bulldozed berm.

Exiting, it was nothing but steep with ruts and rocks competing for my attention.

    It wasn't looking good.

Somehow I managed to wiggle through the gauntlet.

    My HR now sky high.

Only one thing to do, let out a huge...

    ... WOOOOHOOOOO!!!

Sheesh, my heart skipped a beat just reliving and writing this.

    It.
    Was.
    Awesomeness.

    Had I gone down,
    I wouldn't have died.

But, it woulda been a bloody mess firshur.

Glad I kept my eyes open
    and arms relaxed,
    the tires held...

... just another reason to be grateful this time of year.

WHO KNEW WE WERE THAT BAD?

THE PROGRESS WE MAKE can be kind of embarrassing. We don't know it at the time. In fact, we're having so much fun those early pics and vids...

... can be kind of embarrassing.

    There's hope.

    Bad athletes,
    can get good.

    Good athletes,

THE OTHER 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

A LOT OF US plan to do some superspecialsecret training when nobody is looking in the coming days. Some are going so far as to...

    ... do the outrageous.

    A gift to ourselves.

Which reminds me of one my pals who each year would ride a century 12 days in a row.

That was his goto way to start the year with a bunch of base miles.

Of course, the family and friends all thought that was...

... akin to getting coal for Christmas.

Personally, my overarching diabolical (counter season or counter intuitive?) plan is to...

    • play around on jumps and technical stuff
    • catch up with friends
    • have fun

    ... make the training count.

What are you planning for 12/25 thru 1/6

    While you're thinking about that...

... I'm sharing this kit with you in the off chance you're looking so spoil yourself with something outrageously sexy...

our travel will be less exotic,

    WE WON THE LOTTERY!

WE DON'T DREAM enough. At least most of us. When we do, and I'm not talkin' 'bout shut eye...

    ... we change our state.

    Great things are suddenly possible.

I was reminded of this yesterday...

... my son was going to buy a lottery ticket.

He does this when it's over a billion.

    I told him how much...

    • it allows us to dream
    • things we'd change
    • do or never do

... I love and hate the lottery.

    Name one thing you'd do?

I'd never get up to an alarm clock again?

Later, I reflected on my greatest day on the bike.

    In 2022.

    The insane Leadville goal of...

    • a PR
    • sub-8 hrs
    • at age 60

... and how I did it.

The dream of sub-9 at sixty started years prior.

Always in the back of my mind.

    But, there.

How it would feel to be in that kind of shape.

    The closer the date got,
    the more real it became.

Until I believed I could not only go sub-9,
but shatter my 6 previous efforts.

We can win our own lottery...

    • crystal clear
    • detailed
    • belief

... if we'll just start dreaming.

    IS IT THE SACRIFICE?

WHY DO SOME OF US stick with the endurance thing year after year after year and others check in for a season or two then check out...

    ... never to return?

    There is something unseen happening.

I think I know what it is.

    Sacrifice.

    For better or worse...

    • could be skipping a new car for a better bike
    • an hour later out at night for an early run
    • a quick swim instead of a tv binge

    ... we've sacrificed something.

That sacrifice produces the faith necessary to really go for it,
go for that insane physical goal we've set.

    It gives us hope.

    And, we love that...

    ... in everything we do.

YOU'RE GONNA SAY THIS IS IT

THINGS AREN'T GOING to go according to plan. Everything is going to go south. Everything. And you're going to say this is it..

... This is how I end.

    You can accept that,
or you can get to work.

    That's all it is.

    You just begin.

    Solve one problem.

    And then the next.

    If you solve enough problems...

... you get to cross the finish line.

Adapted from the closing scene of The Martian.

    It's a long movie,
    about solving problems,
which is what we do the moment...

... we register for a race or commit snagging that elusive PR.

    (highly recommend the movie)

    THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

IF WE'RE REALLY LUCKY, and we (you n me) are, we'll stumble into something that keeps us endlessly fascinated. No matter how much we do it, or how long we put it on pause...

... it is always, ALWAYS, a ton a fun.

How can we do it forever?

    At a high level?

Before I tell ya the answer...

    • age
    • friends
    • failure to progress

... we gotta accept the challenges.

    1. If we aren't on point with our health choices, age may ravish us...

... and not the sexy kind.

    2. As the playground circles the sun...

... many of our friends will hang it up (see #1.)

    3. Failure to progress...

    ... leads to boredom.

Today, I hooked my sassy grin...

    • rode with younger cats
    • picked up a new trick
    • pushed my limits

... up to the firehose of youth.

    1. Lucked into shredding a lot of single track with Steve and Brian...

... the schedules aligned, the conversations vibrant.

    2. Coming in hot to a corner, Steve locked up the rear wheel...

... Why did you do that? To vector the turn and change trajectory.

    3. Brian, did you launch off that rock?...

... Yeah, came around the turn so fast I had to.

The real secret to the fountain of youth...

... making and keeping young friends.

    THE HIDDEN ADVANTAGE

WE'RE BUSY. We work. Raise families. Participate in communities. Do our duties...

    ... what's our hidden advantage?

    Just that.

    We know how to...

    • schedule
    • pacify
    • lead

    ... and we have perspective.

Which is what sets us apart,
    keeps us in the hunt...

    DARE OR DARE NOT

SOMEWHERE AROUND 8 YEARS OLD, we learn of daring. Someone gets dared. We don't even know what the word means and, yet...

    ... we do.

    Because there is tone.

    An unsaid judgment.

    I dare you.

    Our response...

    • bold
    • calm
    • weak

    ... means everything.

Later in life, that cat in the mirror still dares us...

    ... if we are lucky.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHOW A FRIEND AROUND TOWN?

GETTING A LONG-DISTANCE FRIEND TO VISIT is mostly rare, for most of us. We post to Starva, talk up our locale...

... to the point of bragging.

    Then, the friend shows up.

    Suddenly, we're wondering...

    • will they be impressed
    • can they keep up
    • will they crash

... how this is gonna go down>

There was a time when Surfergirl would take such visiting friends aside and whisper...

... Be careful, he's kinda crazy.

Couldn't blame her as more than a few returned bleeding,
    one with a broken bone.

    It wasn't on purpose.

    • I'd just forget
    • be in the zone
    • having a blast

... thinking they were doing the same.

    The local, me...

... could rip the trails blindfolded.

    Everyone else was riding blind.

    Anyway...

    ... Tim did great today.

(I knew he would, and didn't really back it down at all.)

    GOOD NEWS: THERE'S HOPE!

THIS TIME OF YEAR, the schedule gets crowded. The company parties, family get togethers, community events...

... we want to attend 'em all.

It eats into the training time.

    And, that's good.

Just yesterdee, Surfergirl reminded me of our date to see Gentry.

Her favorite trio was in town for a Christmas concert.

Driving down, we wondered if we'd run into any friends,
walking in we saw my brother and sisterinlaw...

    ... seating, we were astonished.

We were exactly right behind them.

    Couldn't have planned it better,
    total surprise.

    But, that's not the point.

We were carried away in the spirit of the night...

... all the world's nonsense, forgotten.

When we returned home, there was a package on the doorstep.

    Incredible...

... a customer had hand made classic ornaments for each of our family members.

    As a gift.

The real point is if we'll shut off the news, the pointless socials and get out to events and people we love we find...

    ... there's hope!

Hoping you'll find plenty of time to share your love for others in the coming weeks.

THE BEST FREE ADVICE YOU NEVER PAID FOR

WE ALL GET ACHES AND PAINS. Mostly, we just blow 'em off knowing in a few days things will right themselves. At least that's the idea. But, we are organic...

    ... our equipment is not.

    It won't self heal,
    like our miraculous bodies.

No matter how much positive energy we send it...

... those creaks won't go away on their own.

We gotta respect and inspect 'em.

I mean really figure it out.

    Lemme splain it.

I've had an annoying creak for a couple of weeks.

    Finally, last Friday...

    • removed cranks
    • checked, cleaned bottom bracket
    • found a broken bolt on the chain ring spider

    ... thought that'd solve everything.

    Mostly, kinda.

However, last steep climbs at end of Saturday's ride indicated problem not resolved.

Took into the shop for professional treatment.

Ace mechanic gives me a call.

    It's not good.

    How bad.

    Axle in hub is cracked.

    Yikes.

    Yeah, it coulda been bad.

    How bad?

Well, if it broke while riding it would have destroyed the hub innards, and...

    And, what?

... and possibly locked up the wheel.

Now, I dunno how things are where you live, but on that ride I'd just finisihed...

... I hit 35 mph over a rocky, gravel fire road.

    Had that wheel locked up...

... I'd be dead, at best.

HAVE YOU HAD A CLASSY SMOKE, LATELY?

CELEBRATING AN EPIC EFFORT is, can be, a powerful factor in repeatability. You know, whether or not we ever do it again and...

    ... gain the associated benefits.

Old time movies we so classy.

    In black and white.

    Couple meets,
    goes to dinner and dancing,
the very next scene we see...

... they are covered up, smoking in bed!!!

Here's how we do it most Saturdays.

    Meet up at the corner,
hit it hard for 3-4 hours,
    the next thing we know...

... we're at the country store.

Cokes, RedBulls, chips, even had Zingers yesterday...

... our version of smoking in bed.

    ===

Now, here's the diabolical brainwashing science...

    • guaranteeing many repeat performances

... celebrating with lots of sugar and caffeine burns those good feelings in.

    APPRECIATING A ROUGH START

FOR SOME GETTING STARTED is easy, for other it's hard. Even messy. So, what's better...

... an easy start or a tricky start?

    Take today.

    We'd climbed 4141', 13.4 miles.

The start, though steep, was pretty smooth.

The final 4.5 miles, were quite a bit rougher.

    Lots of rocks.

I really suffered that last 2ish miles.

After a bit of a break,
it was time to plummet back down.

We pushed the pace pretty good those first 4 1/2 miles...

... over terrain I've flatted on many times.

I knew the next 9 miles were smoother, but...

... after the previous beating they seemed like a freeway.

    We screamed down.

Surprisingly, I posted my 3rd fastest time ever.

(In case you're wondering if that was my 3rd time down, it was my 44th since 2012, per Starva)

This served as a good reminder...

... if we push through a rough start, we gain the skills to go much faster.

    ===

Further update on the Conti Dubitals...

    • they roll reallyreallyreally fast
    • corner dependably at high speed
    • seem to be pretty darn puncture resistant

    ... I'm loving 'em.

Looking forward to playing with pressures,
I think I can run lower than the 16 and 17 I ran today.

(that was in the cold garage, before the heated up on the actual ride which would increase the pressure by a few pounds)

    WHAT ARE WE RIDING SATURDAY?

WE ALL HAVE A RHYTHM TO OUR TRAINING. We have a favorite rotation of workouts, training partners, intensity...

... just like the goto dinner schedule.

When all else fails, I know spaghetti and meat balls is a winner.

No matter what I have planned.

When it comes to Saturdays, the...

    • crew
    • pace
    • route

    ... I have a few defaults.

If I've had two hard sessions during the week,
    I'm leaning towards a longish sweetspot/tempo ride.

If the week only had one high intensity completed,
I'm gonna wring it out on Saturday.

This week's Wednesday Worlds was kinda hard, therefore...

... tomorrow I have a nasty 1ish hour uphill TT planned.

The younsters are gonna make me hurt.

    Can't wait!

    How do you do it?

    TACKY, TORQUEY TESTING... CONTI DUBNITALS

GETTING NEW EQUIPMENT is always fun. Usually, it is preceded by all kinds of Kool-Aid drinking. You know, the marketing team laying it on thick...

... and our friends laughing at our antiquated ways.

    This week, I bit.

    Finally jumped to wider tires.

From 2.2 RaceKing in back and 2.2 CrossKing in front to...

... 2.4 Dubnitals, front and rear.

My testing took place on our local single tracks...

... while doing low-cadence, torque climbing in Zone 2.

    I'd rip down,
ponder performance on way back up.

Going from 2.2 to 2.4 doesn't appear to be much,
the tires are a bit lighter than the 2.2s

    My initial...

    • they go from edge to edge much quicker
    • seem to roll very fast
    • traction is great

    ... reactions.

I think they're gonna be a great upgrade,
will test on the smoking fast downhills, Saturday.

    MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION

IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise a child, then, for us, it obviously takes a group to train us up proper. The right gaggle...

    ... has countless benefits.

    Number 1 being speed.

Which is why I did the Wednesday Worlds today, and rolled right into...

    ... Pain Cave.

    When we're on form,
this is an hour segment of riding just below detonation.

    Today was much easier...

    • the group was slowish
    • BBB and I cruised Pain Cave
    • catching up and discussing next year's goals

... we were 5 minutes off the PRs.

That will come down because we committed to some rather outlandish goals.

Which means, we'll be pressing the pace on the WW ride,
then duking it out on Pain Cave.

Leading to our mutually assured destruction the rest of the work day...

... and, what we hope will be a massively successful 2026 campaign.

    OTB OR OTB?

WE HAVE ALL THESE CODE WORDS and acronyms in our culture. The deeper we get into it...

    ... the cryptic they become.

    Here's the mechanic's favorite...

... I was just riding along.

His eye's roll and he scribbles on the notes...

    ... JRA.

I heard another from a shop owner who was barely hanging on and his "loyal" patrons were constantly asking for discounts and free stuff...

    ... he called them Freetards.

I've been guilty of both of those and quickly cleaned up my evil ways once I got the hint.

    But, this one...

... it's been hard to stay away from.

    OTB.

    This one is a two-fer,
I can't get it out of my mind lately.

    Off the back...

... which is where I seem to be finding myself a little more than my liking.

    Over the bars...

... luckily, my recent wipeouts have been on solo rides.

    ARE YOU CHOPPING WOOD?

WE ALL HAVE A FAVORITE MOVIE, book or story. One that inspires us to be more than we currently are, or return to a place we once dominated. These myths are important because...

... they can lead and guide us to a better future.

    Truly powerful.

One of my all time favorites is Rocky IV.

Rocky, seeing his once enemy, the great Apollo Creed, who became his friend and mentor, get crushed by a Russian giant...

... decides he must do something completely different.

    He must go...

    • runs
    • pulls a sled
    • carries logs
    • throws boulders
    • chops down a tree

... to snowy and freezing Siberia.

    Maybe it's winter,
    maybe it's cold...

... maybe they only way to get nasty fit is chopping wood like Rocky.

    EARNING VS LEARNING

LIFE IS LIKE AN EPIC CARD GAME. We're dealt our genetic hand. As little children, we have no idea...

... we're just running around having fun.

Somewhere around the age of 8 or so we realize...

... we're not all created equal.

    I can throw,
    my aim is woeful.

    I can run,
    my friends are faster.

    I can swim,
holding my breath is a struggle.

Most of us here, found we love to endure...

... persistence and suffering are out super powers.

We can't earn our way to a sub-4 minute mile, but...

... we can learn how to be faster and more efficient.

That's the journey we are on.

Learning how to be our best.

    Makes sense.

The next season is a long way off.

    Just one problem.

    Physics.

Meaning, when the season does come around, we're going to need a good base from which to start launching our hard efforts.

    So, whatawee 'posed ta do?

    • be more socisl
    • challenge my skills

    ARE YOU COMFY?

WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT comfort zones. How we want to avoid them because they hold us back, lead us to settling for...

... more than we can be.

    Who wants that?

Things I think about after a less frightful drop down one of my all time favorite descents.

I held the KOM at one point,
    still top 11.

Back than, I was really, really at ease on that screamer...

... in a state of flow, relaxed.

    Comfy.

    The good kind.

Yesterday, on the same segment, I was a hot mess.

Smiley on my rear wheel, showing his front wheel, asking...

    ... Are you riding cautious?

    I wanted to say...

... Heck no, and Screw you!

    Things were not flowing,
    I was gripping.

    Hard.

It was very uncomfortable because I haven't been on my MTB much the last year or so.

    Practice leads to comfy,
    comfy leads to flow,
    flow leads to ripping.

    Effortlessly.

    THERE'S A LEGENDARY CLIMB

SOARING 5600' ABOVE SEA LEVEL, we have access to a legendary climb. A gravel fire road. It's the kind of challenge we can sink our teeth into, get a baseline for our fitness...

    ... set legit goals.

    The mountain ain't movin'...

    • 9 miles
    • 3000'
    • 6.3%

    ... but, we are.

The KOM is held by current world tour pro Kevin Vermaerke,
which he probably set in the NICA days.

    53:10

The next 9 are local legends...

... the legit kind, not the goofy Starva thing.

There are two ways to view...

    • I'm slow, and I suck
    • I'm slow, and I can improve
    • I'm slow, and I'm dawgawn grateful to be ripping with my pals

    ... today's traditional Thanksgiving effort.

    One more takeaway.

When I set my PR, we lived much closer to the mountain and I'd ride it 3-4 times a month.

    It was a goto.

    And, it got me thinking...

... if I wanna slay like that again, I gotta do it more.

Maybe every week for the rest of 2025,
and chop 18 minutes off today's time?

... we realize endurance training doesn't favor or create massive muscles.

Which brings me to one of my all time favorite athletes...

    ... the Great Hershel Walker.

Dude was devastating in college and NFL.

This quote must have been so humiliating to those left flattened on the field....

    • 2000-3000 pushups/day
    • 3000-5000 crunches/day
    • hundreds of pullups/day
    • hundreds of dips/day
    • air squats and lunges thousands
    • 20-50 yard sprints

... I never lifted weights until I got into the NFL.

    Damn.

We may not be - ok, never will be - built like Hershel, but...

    STRATEGY VS THE DREAM

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR yet? Maybe it's too early, I mean jeez it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But, almost...

... so, it might not be too soon.

    There's no rule on that.

I was thinking about this on my ride yesterday.

    What comes first...

    ... strategy or the dream.

Especially with all the InfooIncers on the socials.

You know which ones kill me....

... literally saw this one today...

... Download My 47 Points To Master Advertising Now!

    hahahahahah

    But, you get the idea.

We can get so hyped up on a new (to us) strategy...

    • Single-legged box jumps while hula-hooping for explosive sprinting
    • One million grams of carbohydrate from bonking to crushing
    • Sleep like a grizzly and maul the group ride

... we start looking for a race to unleash.

    I've done it,
    still do it.

    We can all be suckers,
the cons are as appealing as the conmen.

Anyway, what I concluded after zonetwoing my way around town was...

... The Field of Dream if we build it, they will come...

    ... is kinda right.

The players, errr strategies, don't show up until the field is built.

In other words, once we identify the...

    • A race
    • impossible PR
    • unconquerable route

... then, and only then, will the strategies we need be apparent.

    Let me say it differently.

    We can quickly toss aside...

    • techniques
    • strategies
    • hacks

    ... the worthless dross.

Because the really good stuff that works is easy to see...

... once we have our dream/goal/desire firm and clear in our minds.

MY VICE IS TERRIBLE, MY CULT IS WORSE

FEW OF US HAVE BEEN TO AN AA MEETING, but we've seen TV/movie version many times. Hi, I'm Todd and...

    ... I'm an endurance junkie.

    Hi Todd.

When we come clean with the general population, Today I...

    • swam 10,000 yards
    • rode for 5 hours
    • ran 20 miles

    ... they think we're crazy.

    We're not.

    The adrenaline rush of ...

    • 60 miles an hour in nothing but lycra
    • the swimmers blue mind
    • the runner's high

    ... we need that hit.

    Regularly.

    This risks we take...

    • sending it down the mountain
    • running along into the cold, dark night
    • impossibly holding our breath one more length

... would freakout any life insurance company.

These sensations of pushing well beyond normal, reasonable, safe...

... are often all that's keeping us stable.

In all sincerity, because the allure of the lottery and dulling our senses with substances is so very tempting and tragically treacherous...

    HOW WE SOLVE PROBLEMS

SOME PROBLEMS ARE HARDER than others to solve.  It can be frustrating when the answers just aren't coming.  This is...

... how I solve my problems.

It's a question of time, right?

The truly unsolvable problems need marinating...

    • clearly identify what needs to be solved
    • set aside time
    • get outside

... during a very lazy ride, run or swim.

The only goal is to solve the problem.

A stop for a pastry and drink is often required...

... I carry a journal and a pen to help me flush out ideas.

The best problems take require more...

    • miles
    • creativity
    • "fuel" stops

    ... 3 or 4 or a lot more sessions.

Just today I was trying to figure out what to focus on...

    • goals
    • events
    • milestones

    ... for next year.

    Went for a ride,
    had a brainstorm,
came home to the Giant calendar.

And they think we ride just for fun and fitness!

    BECAUSE IT'S BEAUTIFUL

WE ALL HAVE A WAY to perform. Whether it's vanquishing, showing off, sufferfesting, truly enjoying every moment, our individual efforts...

    ... leave a lasting impression.

    On others,
    on ourselves.

    Is there a best way?
    Right way?
    Only way?

Let us not gaze into our own navel but...

    • racers
    • promoters
    • business leaders
    • matriarchs and patriarchs
    • community and governments

... appreciate for better or worse.

    It is what it is.

I was recently struck by a singer...

    • unknown by most
    • unwilling to submit to label demands
    • who died without much fame or fortune at 33

... sold more than 10,000,000 records posthumously.

    What?!... how? who?

The great Eve Cassidy sang as if every song was a gift to the listener,
    with uncommon love and passion.

    Nothing more.

May we all do our thing with such beauty.

    ON THE GAS

A LITTLE KNOWN SECRET to not falling over is going faster. It's counterintuitive. But, it's the first thing we taught the kids when they started riding motos in the desert...

    ... speed is our friend.

Then why did I suffer so badly last weekend in a desert-bound gravel race?

You didn't have a motor Dingdong!

    No, it's more than that...

... and I've thought about it a lot this week.

    The 92-mile race

    • low gradient climbs and descents
    • long, long straight roads
    • mostly flat

    ... provided very little coasting.

We had to stay on the gas.

It's not like the terrain here,
most of my ride profiles look like a lumberjack's saw blade.

Anyway, I'm thinking about that this week because I'm starting to do sweetspot training...

... 90% of FTP, without coasting.

I've got to stay on the gas (the pedals).

It's hard to do when we have so many punchy climbs and lots of turns.

But, I'm a committed fool when it comes to this stuff.

TAKE TWO, AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING

GETTING A COLD is annoying. Can't train like we want to, can't sleep well, hard to be productive. If we get near our lover fingers are raised in an X...

... so, what do we do?

    To speed it up.

    There are my goto...

    • Zicam at first hint
    • Pollo Loco tortilla soup
    • Insanely hot and long showers

    ... rider's tales.

Then there's what I did today...

... which could massively backfire, tomorrow.

    I woke up,
    it was cold.

    I had a cold,
    and hemmed and hawed.

I consulted my alter ego Dr. Goforit, who said...

    • raise your body temperature
    • the nose will start to flow
    • blow that gunk out

... Put on a kit and get on two wheels.

    Torture.

I've had mixed success over the years.

I'll either be on my way to pneumonia...

... or good as new tomorrow.

THE GODLY CONNECTION IS STRONG IN THIS ONE

BEING OUTSIDE and unplugged is more than just an escape from "the real world". Most people in "modern society" rarely experience what that is like. We do because...

    ... that's where we thrive.

    And, we're moving fast.

Even if we're practicing our craft daily,
    and the whether is good,
    we could use more.

    Not less.

I experienced a snippet of much more on our road trip.

We took time to visit the land my greatgreatgrandfather homesteaded 100 years ago.

No one else was there but us.

Access is via a gravel road,
    10 miles from a 2-lane highway.

    No cell service.

    The only inputs,
    each other and nature.

    The peace and solitude remarkable.

Over night, the temps dipped low enough to freeze the rain puddles from the prior evening.

    We were cozy,
    the van has a heater.

Still, when we rose to stretch and visit this hallowed land filled with childhood and parenthood memories...

... we were shocked by the reality of nature.

    Not in a negative way,
one that makes you feel alive,
connected to more than a paycheck and bills.

    To God.

    To acquire the land...

    • the extreme temps at 7000'
    • the distance by horse or wagon to town
    • the loneliness during the months no one came to visit

... E. M. Whiting had to stay on it and not leave, for two years.

How else could he make such a sacrifice if not feeling a closeness to his creator?

    I feel it when I'm...

    • there
    • in the surf
    • on our local trails

    ... and love it.

    Need it.

    And so...

    • walk
    • hike
    • ride
    • run
    • surf
    • swim
    • camp

... we keep inviting and encouraging our friends to join us.

    Outside.

    MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE...

DISNEY CREATED AN EMPIRE animating fairytales. Because the appeal is so strong, with little to no cultural barriers we have to ask ourselves not just why, but...

    ... which is our favorite.

    Then, why?

Personally, Cinderella is my top choice.

    Not just the story arc,
    the snappy dances,
    or catchy songs.

There's an orphan in all of us.

Often we don't see who we really are,
    out talents lying dormant.

    Could be naysayers,
    could be something else.

It's nice that Price Charming is a price,
it's charming that he sees Cinderella as she really is.

    The point isn't...

    • Where's my prince charming?
    • Who will save the day for me?
    • Why am I not picked?

... to wallow in our sorrows.

The point is for whom are we Prince Charming?

    IT’S IN OUR DNA

TOO FEW OF US know our family history. Some barely know cousins. Great-grandparents? Forget about it. It’s just not a thing. And, yet…

… what could be more important?

    To know their stories,
    is to know ourselves.

Which is why we drove hours out of our way after the bike race.

Here in eastern Arizona, to soak of our roots.

    Surfergirl’s great-grandfather helped settle Snowflake,
my great-great grandfather helped settle Saint Johns.

    They are neighboring towns,
    about 20 miles apart.

And the communities were quite friendly with each other.

You’d think we grew up out here,
and that’s how we met and married.

    Not so.

I was born and raised in SoCal,
    she was raised in Hawaii.

Maybe somethings are meant to be.

But, that’s not really the point.

    This is hard country,
    the high desert.

To carve a life and community out of nothing took strength, smarts, and massive cooperation…

… the same qualities it takes to complete very challenging endurance events.

Who is an ancestor that inspires you?

I WANNA PUT A DENT IN THAT GIRL

IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE we can say and do the craziest things. You know things we might not normally say or do. And, at the time...

    ... they sound/seem totally normal.

    Like today.

I had the awesome opportunity to flat 15 minutes into the 92 mile race...

    ... suddenly I'm swearing like a sailor.

    It wasn't horrific,
still, glad no one was around.

Spent the next 50 miles basically riding by myself.

    Doing my best.

    Jumping from group to group.

I roll up on one of the female leaders,
bridge across to another badass Barbie.

And, I hear her say the funniest thing...

... I wanna put a dent in that girl.

    Speaking of the other racer.

    I visualize a halloween scene,
    hatchet stuck in the helmet.

    Hahaha.

Then the crass, neanderthal in me thinks...

... that sounds like something I'd like to do on date night.

    Not the hatchet...

... if you know what I mean.

These crazy thoughts are birthed in our very depleted states, as we...

... do our best to stay upright and moving forward.

WHY WOULD ANYBODY GO TO DOUGLASS, AZ?

RACING VENUES ARE HARD TO COME BY, especially in big cities. Almost impossible. The result is the bigger the race, the more likely we are to travel...

    ... someplace we've never been.

    Would never go.

    Here I am,
    two hours south of Tucson,
on the Mexican border, in Douglass, AZ.

This gravel race has the same vibe as my first Leadville,
    back in '99.

    Small town,
    somewhat forgotten.

Which makes it a perfect place to stage a gravel race...

... surrounded my endless gravel roads.

I decided to sponsor the race for three reasons...

    • Mike, the promoter, is hella nice and persistent.
    • He's a huge fan of our products
    • I'm a huge fan of gravel races

... which are the only reasons to sponsor anything.

Passion and admiration for what each other are doing.

    Funny story.

I have actually been here before.

    Back in the 80's.

I was doing missionary work in Mexico and our visas needed to be renewed. Five us youngsters piled in a van and hit to Agua Prieto, MX. The plan was to walk across to Douglass, wait five minutes and walk back with new visas.

    We were greeted with...

... No, no gringo. No se puede asi. (Not so fast whitey, you can't do it like that.)

    So we...

    • spent the night in Motel 6
    • chomped Pizza Hut
    • watched ESPN

    ... forgot all our Spanish.

And crossed back the next day.

I'm guessing Borderlands gravel will be slightly more challenging.

    Good night now.

    HURRY UP

IN OUR EFFORTS TO GET FASTER, we often think of the many benefits. Mainly health, youthfulness. And truth is...

... we are better than most, not as good as some.

    Who's better?

    By that, do you mean...

... how could anybody be better???

We are aerobic machines, and that is a key to longevity.

    Mostly.

    Here are...

    • Sprints
    • Weights

    ... the missing ingredients.

    I know, I know...

    • sprinting sucks
    • weights can be dangerous
    • and, for the weenies in the back, who wants to gain weight?

    ... what you're thinking.

According to research, when we lift weights not only do our bones get denser but there are intra-muscular gains to be made that we cannot get any other way.

You know what else is weird, most people in our culture never sprint again after their early twenties.

So, here's the main takeaway from all scientific facts do 'em and...

    ...  move faster, age slower.

    GIVERS

THERE ARE THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER selflessly and those who volunteer selfishly. Both are admirable. In fact, when I was a race promoter it blew my mind that...

... people just reach out and offer their assistance.

Just giving where there's an obvious need.

I ran into a selfish one tonight.

    The sun had set,
    my headlight was on.

I was making my way cautiously because the ruts on this particular trail are bad and...

... there's an enormous sinkhole that might kill ya.

    As a get there...

... did I say it was pitch dark?...

... a man is standing with a shovel in one hand and a trowel in the other.

    Creepy?
    Scary?

Nope, I knew what he was up to.

    Not burying bodies...

... prepping the trail so when it rains this weekend the ruts will fill in.

    I stopped.

    Introduced myself.

    Thanked him profusely.

No need, I just moved here and can't believe how lucky we are to have these trails right here. Just wanna make 'em perfect for my kids and me to ride on.

To which I could only say...

... Bro, you gotta let me make you a custom RaceDay Bag.

    Is there a better gift?

    ... when?

'Cause here's the deal, if we only did one race next year...

... we could probably make it happen.

    ... where, when and why.

    Me personally, my top choices...

    • Oregon Trail

    THE REBEL ALLIANCE IS GROWING

EVERY NOW AND THEN a new format or race or course or piece of equipment comes along with promises to change everything. Except hardly anything changes...

    ... until something sparks.

    How does that work?

    Like this.

About 10 years ago, I purchased my first gravel bike.

My friends, like me, were roadies and mountain bikers.

A gravel bike seemed like the worst of both worlds.

    I got it,
understood where they were coming from.

Except, I was having so dang much fun...

    ... I didn't care.

    I just kept riding gravel,
    inviting my friends,
    enduring their
    mockery.

    It wasn't overnight,
    more like overdecade.

The last two Saturdays, most telling.

Eight days ago, an absolute shredder on a mountain bike shows up on a spanking new gravel bike.

30 minutes in, he's grinning and shouting...

... This looks so wrong, but gadang it's fun!

Today, another pal shows up for his first group gravel ride.

He's gifted off road, we spent years riding motos in the desert...

... We're going 30+ miles an hour, I can't believe how much ground we can cover!

Does that mean you should be riding gravel, too?

    Maybe.

But, really, it's just a lesson in how things that are worthwhile spread.

    Then again...

... What did the gravel bike say to the road bike?

    I am your father.

FAMOUS COACHES ARE GETTING FIRED RIGHT AND LEFT

IN PRO SPORTS, or high level amateur, there is always a spot light on the coaches. At some point, blame or credit lands...

    ... squarely on their shoulders.

    Should it?

I do love to follow college football...

... so much energy and unpredictablity.

Who would have thought so many megamilliondollar...

... coaches would be punted this year.

    Mid-season.

The great Seth Godin wrote The Gap.

The idea behind the book is when we find ourselves unable to close the gap to our goal...

... the sooner we decide to quit and move on, the better.

It might be a pro gambling tactic as well...

... but, the only gambling I do is putting my heart, soul and cash into this business.

      CHOOSE WORTHY ADVERSARIES

WHAT IS IT ABOUT LOVING UNDERDOGS? It's so uniquely American. Is it our origin story, the DNA of our culture...

We've all been in that arena.

      Had the bell ring.

      Still standing.

      Somehow.

We humans thrive against overwhelming adversaries...

      • inspiration
      • desperation
      • exasperation

... oozing with confidence and power.

      When our all is required,
we discover who we really are.

      As the great Kierkegaard said...

... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

      MY TOP 5 SPEED HACKS

FOR MOST OF US, going faster, getting better, has less to do with a fancy new gizmo or the latest training fad. We know that...

... but, what are doing about it?

      Like the Mastercard ad says...

      ... some things are priceless.

      Here are five...

      • Sleep
      • Nutrition
      • Strength
      • Maintenance
      • Consistency

      ... anybody can do.

      These are my hacks.

      Sleep.

Figure out when we want to wake up. Get in bed 8 hours prior to that. Stay there until it's time. Eventually, our bodies get the hang of it, and boom... we're sleep doping.

      Nutrition.

Eat clean. No packaged foods. If we can't identify the ingredients, we don't consume it.

      Strength.

Do the basics, at home. We don't have time to drive to the gym. No need to do all the sets at once, break 'em up throughout the day. Hardly any equipment is needed: pull up bar, a few dumbbells (adjustables for the win).

      Maintenance.

New equipment is so nice because it is all tight and precise. Flawless maintenance will keep that new equipment performance for years, and we'll always be race ready.

      Consistency.

If we always train at the same time magic happens. Those around us learn and appreciate our commitment. We get it done. Always.

      A final word.

I was never the best athlete. Not among my friends, and certainly not at school or among the general population.

I was never picked first, couldn't aim or hit anything regularity.

I wasn't the bravest or most daringist.

I did have one thing going for me...

... I freakin' loved being outside and being challenged by nature.

Today, I'm probably better than almost all my contemporaries.

      That's not a flex, it's just happens.

      They quit.

Which brings us to the top two hacks of all time...

      ... commitment and passion.

YOU'VE LOST THAT AWESOME FEELING... GET IT BACK!

THERE'S A CERTAIN SOMETHING we feel during the early days of picking up our passion. It's tangible. We can taste it. We love it...

... that's how we got here.

      I'd lost it.

Over the last couple of years, drunk with stupid stats from Training Peaks and Starva...

      • more time
      • more miles
      • more climbing

... I found myself wallowing in fatigue.

      Don't get me wrong.

I'd line up, or roll out with the pals, and, though I might be quick to drift back...

... the ability to endure for hours was ridiculous.

      Something snapped.

      Or, lightning struck.

      I dunno.

But, a few weeks ago, I woke up and said...

      Screw it!

I'm cutting down the long slogs...

... and bringing back sprint days.

      2-3 hours became 90 minutes.

      With 10-15 VO2 max efforts,
lasting 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

I'm super fortunate to live close to trails with a lot of straight up and straight down...

... I let the terrain dictate how long the sprint lasts.

Then, focus on my DH skills...

... coasting, staying off the brakes, carving  and carrying speed.

The upshot, after 90 minutes and 10+ solid efforts?

      I feel amazing,
      not pooped.

Sprinting engages all our muscles and focus...

... a total mind, body soul work out.

      Soul?

      Yeah, trust me.

Do 'em right, and you'll see stars and feel God's presence could be imminent.

WE WANNA BE FASTER. Right now. Not this season, not this month, not this week, not today. Right now...

      CULTURE WARS

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TRAINING groups. Both extend invitations...

      ... the similarities stop there.

      One culture assures...

      • everyone is ready to start together
      • there are plenty of stops
      • nobody gets left behind

      ... fairness and concern.

      The other demands...

      • leaving on time
      • no stopping
      • no waiting

      ... rugged individuals.

      The group we...

      • join

      • help grow

... depends on the result we are looking for.

I'M TAKING A BIG RISK HERE...

I'M TAKING A BIG RISK HERE...

      Apr 13, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING LIKE THE OLD CROTCHETY GUY, I gotta tell ya... the road racing in the 80's, pro and amateur, was a million times more exciting than the last 10 years.

First the pro, because gotta save the best for last.

I was youtubing around last night and pulled up Greg LeMond's amazing time trial.

Now, the thing that's not amazing is all the manufactured drama.  They did that back then because the entire race was packaged and shrunk for American's into a 2 hour special.

So... if you can get past that, the actual story of a guy making up 50 seconds by averaging 33.89 miles an hour for just under 27 minutes is stunning.

But, that was just the start... 'cause youknow how youtube can getyou.

Next thing I know I'm watching all these classic battles of that era.

And here's the difference... those guys would make crazy, riskitall attacks.  Just bonkers.  Unlike today's tres boring powermetermetered approach.  The were like boxers throwing one haymaker after another.

      So good.

The video quality isn't that good, but dang... that drama is delicious.

And amateur racing of that era compared to t'day?

Well, first there was only road racing and track racing... which really means only road racing.

With only one outlet, and an American World and Tour champion, and the 7-11 team doing their thing... road racing was nuts.

Imagine this... it's unbelievable when I think about it... but, true.  No internet, strictly word of mouth and a few flyers in bike shops... crits with fields of 120 Cat 3's would sell out, consistently.

      Road racing was so hot...

      ... but, we were not.

Most of us were in our 20s and had not clue how to train or ride etc.  We were simply in love with the sport and digging the adrenaline rush.

And... like the pros... we were swinging for the fences ourselves.  Team work was nonexistent.  Everybody wanted to win, wanted the glory.

Yep, the drama was just flippin' awesomesauce back then.

The fact that there was so much energy with just one outlet was the big difference.

One that hasn't changed on the road is the need for a stealth back under the saddle.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/the-mini-raceday-bag

That, right there, is the mini-RaceDay bag.  It's made of MTB inner tube, and cinches down with a fat piece of velcro.

Developed by yours bikely because I can't stand listening to thing rattling around.

Fits the basics:  tube, cartridge, levers, and a couple a bucks.

      Completely silent.

This is lowtech at it's best.

And you can get it delivered to your bike stand for less than 20 bones.

THE 1 THING I CAN CONTROL

THE 1 THING I CAN CONTROL

      Apr 12, 2020

      TODD BROWN

The one thing you can control in life is your effort.
      - Mark Cuban, owner Dallas Mavericks

The moment I read this tweet, I knew I had to share it.

      But why?

Because that sacred early morning ride is one of the few events I can control?

Because the connection between effort and results on a bike is so much more obvious than other sports?  Lots of people regularly make a lucky shot, non-existent is the lucky sprint.

I'm not sure I can put into words why that statement resonates so strongly with me.

      But it does.

      Deeply.

In a satisfying and disturbing way... like that picture that vacillates between the old lady and the young lady.

Which reminds me why I like these lights so much.

I'LL TAKE ANOTHER HIT OF L.S.D.

ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, I used to ride to San Diego and take the train home.  It was 80 miles down, 20 miles home.  A nice century, and an easy pace.  An all day adventure, sunrise to sunset.

The amazing thing about that ride was not the ride itself, though it is splendid.

It was the fitness I'd have the following week.

L.S.D. - long, slow distance - can be just the thing for S.F.R. - short, fast riding.

In fact, I don't think it's ever failed me.

      And, it's always fun.

So, with my diabolical plan hatched for next week's riding with predicted sunshine, I dropped some L.S.D. on today's ride.

I'd tell ya right now what my plan is, but I gotta make sure the weather is gonna be a willing partner.

Speaking of willing partners, I'm stoked that PEDALposse member B.L. is going to share his app with us some upcoming challenges... with prizes, too!

NOBODY GOES TO LEADVILLE, KANZA, LOTOJA because it's easy.  We go because it's hard.  And we know, no matter the result on the given day, we're gonna be a heckuvalot better for it.

So, when the messages started coming in this morning...

      • Coach Loran kicked my butt
      • That was brutal, I'll be cursing you tomorrow
      • etc

... well, it made me just giddy as all getout!

It's so easy to make things... easy.  To keep the bar low.  To make your kids' breakfast when they're 17, but there's no lasting joy in it.

It's the big gran fondo, the impossible century, the 10 mile climb that gives us, me for sure, joy... because they require a lot, and the deliver incredible experiences and memories that last a lifetime.

But, you know what the real benefit is?  Yes, I know you do.  It's the confidence we gain that...

      I can do hard shtuff.

... I can climb that mountain, I can lift that for you, I can stay focused when it's all goingtoheckinahandbasket... because I've done it before and I'm prepped to do it again.

Which brings me back to Coach Loran... she's prepping the PEDALposse to be stronger than ever, on and off the bike.

If you're into that sort of badassery, what are you waiting for?

IT AIN'T RAINING UNTIL THE SOCKS ARE SWIMMING

IT AIN'T RAINING UNTIL THE SOCKS ARE SWIMMING

      Apr 09, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

IT'S RAINING EVERYDAY, but it's not raining all day.  And the part that is raining, has hardly been worth calling rain.  In fact, the app calls it 25% chance of rain.  And this week, that's meant the streets are wet but the top tube isn't.  Which isn't really riding in the rain.

Riding in the rain is when the glasses are bubbled, the gloves are soggy and the socks are swimming.

I'm good with the bubbled glasses.

And I don't really mind soggy gloves.

But once the socks ares swimming, I'm done.  It must be some primordial warning...

... yer feed er wet, yer gonna die!...

... because I can pretty much ride in all kinds of treachery:  freezing temps, hail, snow, the dead of night, 110 degree heat, ferocious winds... but I know my miles are numbered the moment I feel the tops of the socks start to drown.

It's only a matter of splashing and drenching until it works it's way inside my very expensive shoes and the warning bells start to sound and the legs start to congeal.

Then the very sad trumpets sound, and the little diesel that could calls it quits.

      But, not this week.

This week the rain drops fell on my matte black KASK helmet... and I loved it.

      TODD BROWN

I PURPOSELY ROLLED OUT TONIGHT WITH NO BOTTLE AND NO FOOD.  I know myself, and if I'd rolled with food and drink I would have ridden a lot longer.  That's one type of cycling governor.

Sure enough, about 60 minutes I started to get real bonky.

Bonking is never a good idea.  It can do lasting damage to your muskels that can take weeks to recover from.  But, this was a baby bonk.

... back to the plot of this email.

Governors are things that limit what we want to do.

The awesome Joe Friel, in The Cyclist's Training Bible,  dedicated a big chunk of his message to figuring out our what he calls our limiters and what to do about them.

An obvious limiter is power to weight ratio.  If you have a low power to weight ratio climbing is going to be hard.

Coach Loran and I were talking about this today, because she's lost 16 pounds using her Fit56 program and she can't believe how much better she's climbing.

The other side of that is getting stronger.

And, as I've talked about lately... not only is getting stronger easier than you think - 2-4% of your day - but it's not just about getting those gnarly pistons below your hips more stouter, there's much speed to be gained by strengthening our core and upper body.

Position on the bike can be a limiter.

Pro bike fitters will tell ya, a proper fit can get you 10-15% more power.  Even if they're off by 75%, a 2.5-4% gain in power can easily be the difference between winning and losing.

      Equipment can be a limiter.

Going from clunky wheels to aero with ceramic bearings can to anybody from zero to hero.

Then there's apparel... is that jersey a parachute only a drag racer could love?  There's a reason our Speed jersey looks like it's made for a prepubescent punk.  First, it's made from the finest Italian yarns that have massive stretch capabilities.  Second, it's made to be skin tight... no flappy crappy.

      Did you know...
      Studies show...

A good aero helmet is on par with a good set of aero wheels in increasing your speed?... and heckuva lot less of an investment.

      Did you know...
      I looooovve KASK helmets?

I always thought they looked super cool.  Then my buddy John got a job at H2 and started repping the helmets.  He had a sample in his car.  I tried it on...

... it fit perfectly.  Really.  Like, put it on and never take it off.  Which is exactly what I did.  I'm not sure how John handled his next few sales calls, because that was his only sample and I wasn't giving it back.

I've worn my Protone from crits to Leadville to LoToJa.   Same helmet, for 4 years.

      That's quality.

      1 HOUR ON EVEREST

      1 HOUR ON EVEREST

      Apr 07, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

WHEN I WAS YOUNG WARTHOG - when he was a young warthog! - I wondered if my biker legs would easily carry me up the treacherous slopes of Mount Everest.

I read Into Thin Air as prep for Leadville.

I thought I had a grip on it.

Today I spent 1 hour on Everest... by that I mean I explored what it would be like to do the Everest Challenge - 29,029' in 1 day.  I climbed 2800ish feet in 1 hour.

The gradients were too steep to climb seated, or at high cadence.  And, too tricky to relax on the decent.

      So many questions surfaced:

      Best average gradient?
Best time of day to start?
      Best nutrition strategy?
      Long 30-60 minute climb?
      Short 12-20 minute climb?
      Where is a shaded climb?
Where would the wind be light or favorable?
      What gears to run?

After that first hour of dedicated climbing, I meandered home and knocked another 1600ish feet.

I think I could average 2000'/hour, which would mean 15ish hours.  That would be 6 hours longer than Leadville and LoToJa.

It would be a massive challenge.

To start, I'm going to knock out 29,029' over the course an upcoming week.  Even that will be about 50% more climbing than I've ever down in a week and nearly 3X my average week.

I don't know if there's a PR tracker for that...

... but I do know our t-shirts get KOMs for being the softest t's on the planet.  Trust me, these will be your all time faves.

      3 Ways To Snag PRs

      3 Ways To Snag PRs

      Apr 06, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I've surprised myself quite a bit lately... and I think it has everything to do with a slight change of habit.  The old ways are being replaced by new ways.  The curious thing is according to the nerds at Strava my Fitness is quite a bit lower than it was in January, when I getting ready for the first race of the year.

Yet, I've snagged a number of PRs.

How can this be... an old diesel getting better?

Well, here's one way to PR... and I can't 'splain it.

With all the rage about fatter tires and lower pressure being faster... why the heck am I faster on my gravel bike on a lot of fire roads than on my MTB with fatter, softer tires?

      That shouldn't happen.

      But it does, a lot.

Here's another way I've been PRing... the last coupla weeks, as I've scouted a 100k gravel route that I'm calling the Gravel Goon, I've hit trails near our old place where we lived 5 years ago.  5 years ago, I was 10 lbs heavier and a whole lot weaker.

Less weight + more strength = more PRs.

But, the biggest difference is the change in training during the last month.  No group rides, which is how I traditionally get my intensity in.  Which means... while I've been putting in some pretty big weeks, I've been building my base... growing my capillaries, my aerobic capacity.

While I haven't been chasin' PRs, I have snagged quite a few.

      Long live the PR quest!

KOMs are cool, PRs are coolioer... but, whichever yer after there's nothing like PR lotion to help you get there...
... and the extremely soft and sexy PRs Over KOMs tshirt to remind us what were all about.
So, use promo code - PRsRULE - when you buy PR lotion and when you add the t-shirt to your card it will be free.

      HAVE A HEART

      TODD BROWN

      A WISE MAN ONCE SAID,

Our hearts define who we are.

He's not a bike nut, like us.

Nor is he much an athlete, that I know of.

      But he's right.

We'll only go as far and fast as our heart permits...

      What we consume...
      How we spend our time...
      Matters...

... those with big hearts make it big.

And so we train hard, eat right, dial in our rigs that one day we can produce a good result in a bike race...

... but we also must rest.

For me, that means taking at least one day a week to get off the bike.  True rest.  Unplugged from all distractions.  I choose Sundays...

      ... and early mornings,
to put some a that chickensoupforthesoul kinda stuff in first... before anything else, like the news and socialmedias.

Every race requires a healthy heart, especially the human race.

      ---

If you're lining up for big race, or riding indoors and sweating it up good, well, let me recommend a proper lubing for the area of your special purpose...

      EFFORT BRINGS REWARDS

IS IT EASY TO RIDE 100K?

No, not really.  It takes a lot of hard work just to be able to ride far and fast.  But, it's worth it... it's a feeling like no other.

      Effort brings rewards.

I was rewarded today with a gorgeous sunset during another go scouting the Gravel Goon ride.  I had to stop, such was it's pull.

Maybe it was the endorphins, being 40ish miles into the ride?

Or, the grassy single track that seemed to lead right into the clouds?

Whatever it was it was, it was more that just a sunset.  It was something I needed at the end of a full week.

Those the rewards we get which make the effort worth it.

Along the way we get other rewards, like knowing how to make that 100k ride more enjoyable.

For instance I really like Chamois Butt'r for long rides.  It's magic for nether regions in tip top shape.

      IT'S 2% OF YOUR DAY

      IT'S 2% OF YOUR DAY

      Apr 03, 2020

      TODD BROWN

COACH LORAN KICKED MY BUTT AGAIN TODAY.  Yep, we hit the gluts and abs hard.  She said something off the cuff, but I thought it was super profound.

      It's 20 minutes Todd, 2% of your day... everybody's got 20 minutes.

I had to do the math.  It didn't seem right.  But, it's right.  20 minutes is 2% of 16 hours of wakey time.

And you know what's cool about that?

That 2%, spent wisely can equal 2% or more faster on the bike.

Where do I notice that strength?  On the long climbs and long rides.  Sprinting up little climbs, or just straight up sprinting.

      Strength equals speed.

Where do you find another 2%?  I find it either first thing in the morning, or in the evening when I unwind.

Or you could just be a lazy sloth.

      Don't!

Anyway, Loran and I are spending more than 2% of our days creating videos so you too and get some free speed.

They'll be included with the PEDALposse.

      THEY DON'T EVEN TRY

      THEY DON'T EVEN TRY

      Apr 02, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

THEY'VE GIVEN UP ME, and I can't blame them.  Have they given up on you, too?  Back in the beginning, it was easy.  But, now it's just impossible.  I'm too far gone.

When I first got the bug...

I remember the handlebar mirror my girlfriend purchased for my racing bike.  She thought it would help me see what the others were doing while I sped to victory.  Seemed like a good idea to me too... oh, the shaming that followed.

Then there was super cool Italian pro team jersey my mom got me, it was so bright and colorful... all the cool guys mocked me, again.

So, I got smart and put together a list of gear that would be nice to have for a gift.  And that worked pretty well while things were not so technical.

But, the more passionate I got for cycling the more impossible it became for me to wait... and forget surprising me with just the right thing.

Alas my pickiness for awesomeness led me to today... to a family who truly loves me and gets me...

... a wonderful time around the dinner table, and a stack of dark chocolate bars and other treats.

      I'm a lucky man.

Oh, and what did I get myself for my birthday?

A few hours scouting out a super rad gravel route.  Even came up with just the right name:  GravelGoon.  And plunked down $12 for the URL.

Who knows, next year I might even invite some friends to ride it with me on my special day?

If your family is anything like mine, well they might just want to get you a gift card.

      A LIFE OF SPEED

      A LIFE OF SPEED

      Apr 01, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

NETFLIX HAS THIS GREAT DOCUMENTARY RIGHT NOW CALLED A LIFE OF SPEED: The Juan Manual Fangio Story.  Fangio won multiple championships with 4 different manufacturers:  MercedesBenz, AlfaRomeo, Ferrari and Maserati.  He raced F1 well into his 40's.

      That will never happen again.

Unlike bicycle racing, today race car success is much more about the car and the team behind the driver... some say it's only 5% the driver.

For us, it's much more about the athlete.  I'd say it's athlete first, team second, then the equipment.

We all know FitDiesel much faster than FatDiesel.

One thing I've noticed with all the upper body and core work I've been doing is that I can climb endlessly out of the saddle.  It's truly remarkable.  I never realized the reason I would sit down on a climb and spin had so much to do with how pathetically weak I had become.

Do you pushups and pullups... and stay tuned because this month we're launching our first work out video.  In less than 2% of your day, you're gonna get your butt kicked... and lover every minute of it.

Which brings me back to Fangio.  Several times he repeated the following words...

You must always strive to be the best,
but you must never believe you are.

On the surface it's easy to say, Well yeah.  But there's real gold there.  If ya think about it...

You must always strive to be the best,
but you must never believe you are.

      ... World Champion gold.

Part of being the best is looking for opportunities to win.  An open gap to shoot, an inside line to take...

... so, while things have been slowed down on the cycling side of our biz, we are all hands on deck making fleece face masks.

      https://fleecefacemasks.com/

We launched a fleece mask specific site today.  We have plain colors in stock, ready to ship... and yes, we can make them in your team colors too.

      LESSONS FROM CLUBBER LANG

      LESSONS FROM CLUBBER LANG

      Mar 31, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

.MY FAVORITE ROCKY VILLAIN IS CLUBBER LANG.  He's so raw and terrible and confident.  The movie version of Tyson.

While Rocky is cruising along knocking out tomatocanhasbeens, Clubber is beating people senseless.

Rocky's manager knows Clubber will crush Rocky, so he dodges the fights.

But Clubber is coming, and finally confronts the ItalianStallion in public with the greatest makeyouhatehim quote ever:

Hey woman! Hey woman! Listen here: since your ol' man ain't got no heart maybe you'd like to see a real man. I bet you stay up late every night dreaming you had a real man, don't ya'? I tell you what, bring yo' pretty lil' self over to my apartment tonight and I'll show you a real man.

      Rocky gets destroyed.

      But that's not the point.

We all have Clubber Langs in life.  Whether that's a racing nemesis or a ferocious headwind or a climb that's always a little too long... it's the Clubber Lang that brings out our very best.

Only Clubber could teach Rocky this lesson..

Nothing is real if you don't believe in who you are!

Sure, it's just a moooooovie... but the reason Rocky movies resonate is because they come from real life.  This is worth watching.
So, what's your Clubber Lang and do you believe?
Mine?  I'm working on it... some sort of ridiculous goal.
I'm leaning towards 30,000 feet of vertical,
      or 600 miles,
or 30 hours of riding in a week.
It's a crazy challenge I'm gonna put out to the PEDALposse
      https://pedalindustries.com/pages/join-the-pedalposse

      IT'S THE BEST

      IT'S THE BEST

      Mar 30, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I WAS RECENTLY READING AN "IT'S THE BEST" ARTICLE... in a bike mag.  When I read this type of article on subjects I know a little less about I just take it granted...
Well of course that's the best droptop sports car under $30k with 4 tires...
and, Clearly that's the best Enduro motorcycle with wide ratio gearing made for Dakar...
or, this is the best singlestory layout for high desert living...

I'm sure that really is the best gravel bike for under $3500 made by a major advertiser in said mag.

And, I guess that's the point...

... when you actually know yer stuff,
the articles turn out to be pure fluff.

It's been said that the best bike out there is the one we're riding, but I'll go ya one better...

... the best bike out there is the one I'd be saddest to lose,
the one I'm least likely to sell off.

Which is the weird, irrational part... for me anyway, the bike I'd want to keep most is the one that I...
Shelled out the fewest bucks for
      Have never won anything on.
      Ride most often
      Treat the worst
      Can count on.

It's a trust thing... and I trust it to deliver good times, at all times.

Kinda like trusting me when I say the PEDALposse is going up next month

TOM CURREN WAS THE BEST SURFER OF MY GENERATION, and he didn't care a whit for his sponsors.  I remember my bikeracing friend Bill, then a big shot at Quiksilver, ranting that Tom was a terrible athlete to front the brand.  Bill liked LeMond. Tom was no tightly wound euro... he didn't seem to care about winning,.. didn't show up for the people paying the bills.  He showed up to surf.

He became a 3-time world champion... soul surfing.

Colin Strickland reminds of Curren.  A man cutting his own path.  He turned down an opportunity to race the classics for  Jonathan Vaughters.

      He's a soul rider.

And he used that soul riding to dominate  the Red Hook Crit Series.

Then owned World Tour pros at Dirty Kanza.

Yesterday I gave my soul a good cleanse... here's my Rx:

Load up with plenty of fuel,
a gist of where you want to go,
and let your loved ones know you'll be back before dark.

Take the route less traveled, at whatever pace your feelin'.

No chasing or waiting.  Just riding.

Ease off the pace a bit and bust out some real food.  A waffle, a PBnJ, dried fruit, salted dates with almonds.

      Coast along.

      No hands.

      Save. Our. Souls.

Who knows there just might be a championship or PR up ahead.

SOME WARM UPS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS

SOME WARM UPS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS

      Mar 28, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

TODAY'S RIDE WAS EPIC:  killer loop, fast times, incredible weather.  And, I think it had everything to do with the six (6) hours I spent warming up.

Not exactly pro protocol, on a trainer in front of the team motorcoach in just my bibs, sweating with a gold chain swinging back and forth... this was something much better.

Get up early, skip breakfast, load van with boxes, meet kids at their new place, unload van, drive to old place, load up van, unload at new place, back to old place for a final load, unload at new place, eat 4 slices of pizza...

      ... simple enough?

TBH, I was pretty pooped out... but I really, really wanted to figure out this new loop I'd plotted in my head all week.

By 3pm, I was on HVY MTL ready for a 100k of dirt, gravel, water and good 'ol asphalt.

I could have taken a nap.

      Right...

      I felt great.

It was 62 degrees and sunny.

Every turn greeted me with lush greenery.

I wasn't sure of the General Store would be open, given the lock down, but it was my halfwayish point and I'd need fuel... it was.  I grabbed a Mexican Coke and some Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.  Stood 10 feet behind the couple in front of me... my mouth was watering, the Coke looked so refreshing.

      Do you take Apple Pay?

      Yes, we do.

... if only their Apple Pay reader worked, silly me forgot cash.

You know what, it was such a wonderful afternoon I didn't even care.  I'd be fine.

2 bottles with 2 scoops of GQ6 and 3 Honey Stinger Waffles was prefect for 4 hours, 55 miles, 5500' of vert.

But, I was hellbent on going a full HUNKR (100K ride)... and that last 7 miles took at least another 3 hours.

There's just something about sticking with the commitment... no matter how tired, no matter bonked.

Nobody'd know if I cut it short.

      But that's not our style.

You know what is our style?

I THOUGHT IT WAS DINNER TIME

I THOUGHT IT WAS DINNER TIME

      Mar 27, 2020

      TODD BROWN

ONCE YOU GO DING-DING, you'll never go back.  Why just this morning I was working my way home on a gentrified dirt path... one of those fancy jobbers the developer put in so the buyers could feel adventurous 50' from home.

That's cool with me... folks gotta start somewhere, or they'll never get to where we get.

Bonus, the trails are rarely used and allow me to connect all kinds options from roads to paths to singletrack right on out to nowhere... which is exactly where I need to get this morning.

On my way back from nowhere, on the final dirt path before the paved road home, I came upon a sweet lady.

      Ding.

      DingDing.

      Ding.

Oh... why I couldn't figure that sound... I thought it was dinner time.

She had a lovely, coquetteish smile.

      I smiled back.

I love this little bell.  So much better than my teenage superwhistle, or a bunch of HeyTheres.

I RINSE MY LEGS ONCE A WEEK, NO MATTER WHAT

I RINSE MY LEGS ONCE A WEEK, NO MATTER WHAT

      Mar 26, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

YOU KNOW HIGENE IS IMPORTANT, that's why I rinse my legs once a week.  Sometimes, even two times.  Rarely, three or more.

It's all part of my diabolical training... one of the reasons you may get me on a training a ride, but RaceDay be totally different.

      Do you rinse your legs?

Errr... do you even know how to rinse your legs?

      Not wash.

      Rinse.

A rinse ride is where you go out and go real easylike.
      Heart rate, very low.
      Power, negligible.
      Cadence, high.

It feels like a big, fat waste of time.  But it's not, at least for me.  For me, it's integral to what I do.

      Train hard, then rinse.

I usually rinse on Thursdays, after Monday openers and Tuesday hammering and Wednesday tempo/climbing...

      ... rinse, and repeat.

Keep your power low and your cadence up real high,
Going on a rinse ride gonna have a real, a good time!

You know what else is a good time?

      The PEDALposse.

      How good?

RAIN PLUS SUNSHINE PLUS TIME ALWAYS EQUAL HERO DIRT.  That moist, tacky stuff.  The kinda dirt that turns mere mortals into super heroes.

      That's the dirt I love.

It keeps me out past my dinner time.

I can't help it, it's too entreating to be denied.

Every turn is a little faster, the bike leaned a little more.

But, there's something more than the obvious tactile and visual feedback from which confidence flows.

      Here dirt is quiet.

      Weirdly quiet.

The kinda quiet you don't even notice, but it's there.  Urging us to go faster...

      ... and faster ...

... yes, nights like tonight, I'm deeply in love with Mother Earth.

Does that make me unfaithful?... I dunno.

But, I do know I'm very faithful to the PEDALposse and excited to move into the next phase.  The price is going up next week.

I WAS NEVER MORE SURE OF THE NEED TO BREAKAWAY FROM BRITAIN THAN TODAY.  The Brits have a deep and romantic passion for long, long, long time trials.

      They're proud of this.

They measure them in miles, not klicks.

      From their governing body website:
Most races are at fixed distances (10, 25, 50 and 100 miles) or fixed time (12 and 24 hours).

      10.  Okay, I've done a few of those on Fiesta Island... even nabbed a state medal once.

      25.  I'm not TT'r, so that sounds longish.

      50. Uh... no.

      100.  Are you nuts?

      Fixed time, 12-24 hours....

... well, I was thinking about that today as I headed out to do our TMWC group ride... by myself, because that's the thing do to at the moment...

What possesses the Brits to have such a fascination with said competitions?
      Why torture yourself so?
Didn't Cav' start off doing those?
      Or, Wigo?
      Or, Froome?
      Or, Thomas?

-> Insert sound of screeching brain cells here <-

If it's good enough for those legends, maybe it's not such a bad idea?

In fact, it turned out to be a pretty darn fun and hard ride. MikeZ entered the course about 30 seconds ahead of me.

I passed him as quickly and definitively as I could.
      But, that gap wouldn't grow.

Then, he did the same to me.
      But, that gap wouldn't grow.

I made one final pass before The Wall.
      But, that gap wouldn't grow.

... and that was okay.  It pushed us on.  Just having each other within 30 or so seconds made things a lot more funner.

Jorge saw our hi-jinx, went and gave it a shot and texted this

Who knows? We just might develop some championship grit if we keep this up.

There was one thing I was missing this morning, and that was my PR Lotion.  For sure, next week I'm lathering up.

Here’s a quick update on things over here with regards to the restrictions we are under:

      1. We have answered the call by the government to support essential needs and retooled our workflow to help produce breathing masks medical professionals need – more info.
      2. All InStock Orders and Partially Complete Custom Orders are shipping from our Sales office.  I’m personally taking care of that.
      3. All pending Custom Orders and Pre-Orders are ready to print – this is 80% of the work.  As soon as we are allowed back online, these jobs will be completed and delivered.
      4. The design team is working remote and continuing to prep files for production once we are given the go ahead.

      RIDE ON! SCHEDULE.

      Mar 23, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

PETE AND I FOUND THIS KID TO CUT OUR HAIR.  His exuberance for life and hair was magnetic.  He grew up with Brian Lopes, and recycled his stories for us.  But, the best part about this kid was his constant, and I mean constant, use of the phrase...

      ...Right on!...

      Hey man, how's the riding?

      Super good.

      Right on!

      And the family?

      They are great.

      Right on!

      Everything ended with Right on!

Dudes being dudes, Pete and I started saying Ride on! to everything he said.

How's are the ladies treating you?

Oh man, my girl is sweet.

      Ride on!

      And biz?

You know I love what I do.

      Ride on!

Years, decades?, later, we still work it into our conversations with each other.

      How's was your trip?

      We had a blast.

      Ride on!

      Did you take your bike?

No, just surf and wife time.

      Ride on!

My son sent a text early this morning.

Back to my normal schedule!! After sleeping in all last week, it feels great to be up before the sun again! Sticking to a schedule is huge—the experts were right!

      He's right.

It's time to get back on schedule.

Tomorrow, I'm doing TMWC.  Not with the crew.  Not wise.  Not cool.  By myself.  Back on schedule. It's time to...

      ... Ride on!

PS... have some fun, work Ride on! into your lexicon.

      YOU OUGHTA KNOW

      YOU OUGHTA KNOW

      Mar 22, 2020

      TODD BROWN

I WANT YOU TO KNOW, THAT I'M HAPPY FOR YOU.
I wish nothing but the best for you...

... dawgawnit, it was so great to see so many people out riding bikes this weekend.

They were in every shape and size.
      Cruisers
      Foldables
      BMXrs
      and 10 Speeds

A few, like us, working out the base miles, continuing to pull back on the bow with the calendar cleared and no target to hit.

Most, with that goofyEinsteingrin, falling back in love with the wind on their face under their own power.

My favorites are the kids fulla spunk... the young kids who just realized this sport might just be better than love itself... boys and girls with...

... helmets high, high, high on their foreheads,
      runnin' shoes on platform pedals,
grabbing the bars like the bike just might get away...

      ... I love your energy

My daughter will be joining your throngs.

She's gonna do a triathlon, not an actual organized triathlon.  Surf for an hour, ride 16 miles, run 3.  Her own numbers.  Her own race.

      Where'd you get that idea?

I heard about this girl who trained for a half-marathon and on the date of the cancelled event she just went out and did it.  So, I'm going do my own triathlon.

Here's my chance to get her off to a good start, because she oughta know.  Give her all the pointers a loving DieselDad can give.  Starting with getting her bike dusted off and teaching her the basics...

      Maintenance
      Nutrition
      Handing
      Positioning
      Helmet placement

      Which begs the question...

Should I just head on down and race the Sagebrush Safari on my own?

Maybe a few of us can drive down separate, do a time trial start.  Set a few course PRs, maybe even get a big cup... could be the start of something new.

Ya know what else could be the start of something new for you?  The mysterious and secretive PEDALposse...

      https://pedalindustries.com/pages/join-the-pedalposse

... I'm here, to remind you,

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE CLIMBS

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE CLIMBS

      Mar 21, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

MORNING GREETED ME WITH MUCHO WORK.  By 10am, I had gone from PJs to kit.  A few more things to do... and at 1215ish I finally got out to stretch the ol' legs... and rest the ol' noggin.

      A stunning Spring day.

      Everyone was out.

And I had a plan hatching... why not ride up and hit all my 5 favorite climbs in Laguna Beach?

There's the celebrated "7 Sisters".  Seven climbs from sea levelish to a thousand or so feet.  Grades of up to 25%.  But, 3 of the climbs, for me, just aren't that interesting.

So, my plan was the "5 Bros".  5 climbs, just as redonkulous, but with better views and suckyouin architecture.  For the locals:  Alta Vista, Temple Hills, Skyline to Top of the World, Summit Dr to Del Mar to Moulton Meadows Park, Sea Island to Isle Vista.

5000+ feet of climbing in perfect weather by myself.

      The legs never tired.

With no reason other than cleaning the climbs, I found a blissful rhythm.

An easy sweat bounced off my Wahoo.

I was working, but it wasn't work.  Just joy, at the end of a challenging week.

A verse came to mind, from the Book of The Old Diesel:

      In uncertain times,
      There's peace in the climbs.
Maybe it's the notion of getting away accompanied with going high?  Or, the sense of control in accomplishing something few on earth can do?  Whatever it is, it's always there.  A constant I can count on.
It's fun sharing things I count on with my friends.  But, ya it tickles me like no other to get a message like this from Emil...
If you're really into smashing the PRs... what the heck are ya waiting for?
      https://pedalindustries.com/products/amp-pr-lotion
If you don't trust me by now... then for heck's sake, trust Emil.  He's a cool cat.
      Use promo code TRUSTEMIL
That's free shipping, a promo code and Emil's good word...
... what more do you need?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO WIN THE SAME RACE TWICE?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO WIN THE SAME RACE TWICE?

      Mar 20, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

A WEEK AGO WE WERE GOING FOR A CERTAIN, GUARANTEED VICTORY.  Then, we weren't.  Someone hit the brakes, hard!

But, I think we are in a better race now. Maybe you can help?

Nationwide we have health professionals that need a mask to wear over the limited supply N95 masks, which must be changed after each patient visit.

Our factory, as of last night, can only make essential products.

We need to get the word our to the health professionals that we have answered Governor Cuomo's call to supply reusable fabric masks...

... which will help keep our people working.

Getting the word out, that's how we win twice.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/fleece-breathing-mask

THIS IS A FLEECE MASK, which is what Gov Cuomo called for, today, 3/20/2020.

Fleece masks have been shown to be on par with surgical masks for virus protection - 75%.  The N95 mask is rated at 95%.

The CDC recommends changing the N95 mask after each patient is seen.  With the current shortage of masks, medical personal are keeping the N95 on and changing a reusable mask like this between each patient visit.

Our fleece masks should be washed between patient visits and can safely be washed with chlorine.

Here is information from Oxford Academic
      -> https://academic.oup.com/annweh/article/54/7/789/202744

Of course, we can make them custom with your company logo.

Please forward to any medical professionals you believe are in need of these masks first.

      Our current capacity is 200/day.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/fleece-breathing-mask

May all our races end in victory.

I USED TO SUFFER FROM PREMATURE ACCELERATION

I USED TO SUFFER FROM PREMATURE ACCELERATION

      Mar 19, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

OH, YOUTH.  THE VIGOR.  THE UNBRIDLED PASSION.

The first time it felt so good.  The starter said Go!, and I went, and then it was over...

      ... premature acceleration.

The next time out, surely I'd gotten a handle on things...

... I led right up until the finish line.

Next I tried the long range attack...

... only to drop my bomb a good half mile from the mark.

If you've ever hung your head in frustration at never timing your max just perfect, then this post is for you.

Yes, you, regardless of age or experience, can do better.

You may never win, but there's no reason to misfire your big fire.

So, here are 3 things you gotta do:

      • Be a warrior: practice sprint, by yourself.  Go find a nice straight road with at least 4 well spaced light posts.  Roll into the first one at 70%, shift and go faster until the second one, shift and go 9/10ths until the 3rd... here is where the warriors displace the weekenders, go all out to that fourth post.  It's gonna burn, you're gonna wobble, the lungs will be searing and the slobber sloshing.  Be a warrior.
      • Own the lights.  Don't just lazily clip in and yawn your way back up to speed.  Grab those bars, snap those cleats, and get to ramming speed as quickly as possible.
      • Latch onto the best.  Those first two will help you with this one.  Find the fastest wheel in your group - a skill you need to hone in and of itself.  Now, every time there is a sprint get on that wheel.  Superglue yourself.  And watch... don't even try and come around or win... just latch on.  Notice how he gets up to speed, how he out maneuvers the others, and how far out he launches this final effort.

These 3 practices are still practiced by yours Diesely, because they work.

Want more?... well, here's the place...

I know, it's a little unclear.  There's a reason for that.  For those who join, it's real clear.

      A PERSONAL RECORD.

      Mar 18, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I SNAPPED OFF PRS YESTERDAY, HO-HUMISH.  It's pretty easy to do around here, where nearly every ride spouts countless segments.  Rarely is it worth the time it takes to investigate the digital trinkets.

      The real PRs are legendary...

Like our local 9 mile, 3000' dirt climb up Harding Truck Trail.
Or the Alpine Loop in Utah
      Or Mount Lemon in Tucson

Since there's no organized racing at the moment, and since 99% of Strava segments are plain silly, now is the time to lay hold on that elusive PR.

      Is it an epic climb?
      A pancakeflat TT?
      The Everest Challenge?

Or, maybe it's just a ridiculous ride like the one I'm looking at, so far and hideous it'd never be done again... The surf of San Clemente to the peaks of Big Bear - A Surf N Summit?

With all the racing being shoved off to the fall, it's a good reminder that the only race that matters is the one against our 2nd best.

      So what's it gonna be?
What are you going to go after?
What's gonna keep your fire stoked?

While you're thinking about that, consider this... if you love these posts, you'll probably love the PEDALposse too.

      https://pedalindustries.com/pages/join-the-pedalposse

I know, it's a little unclear.  There's a reason for that.  For those who join, it's real clear.

      YOU CALL THAT MOTORPACING?!!!

      YOU CALL THAT MOTORPACING?!!!

      Mar 17, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

THE SITUATION I'M ABOUT TO DESCRIBE ACTUALLY HAPPENED, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Motorpacing:  the ages old training method of riding right on the fender of a motorcycle to work on your speed or riding right on the bumper of your team car to catch back up to the peloton.

      This wasn't motorpacing.

      This was Todderpacing.

I was late, going all out to catch the fellas... and uh-oh, there's one of 'em now... fixing a flat, nearly done.  We get 'im situated and I look into his eyes... we both know I'm a wee bit faster than him and there's only one way we're gonna catch...

You've got to stay right on my wheel!

      Okay.

Todderpacing, named after some weirdo, is where the stronger friend goes to the front and the slower friend hangs on.

It's a great way to train for each friend.

The Todder, the rider on the front, must go right at his maximum without dropping the friend.  This requires keeping the power very, very even and smooth and picking the cleanest of lines through turns.

The friend, the rider hanging on, must stay pegged to the Todder's rear wheel.  Any gap opened up and the friend will be ejected.  The friend must also resist pulling through when feeling rested - often called premature acceleration -  as this will cause the friend to tucker out and get ejected.

Todderpacing is a fine way for two friends of unequal speed to train together and have a ball.

      I highly recommend it.

I also highly recommend you check out the PEDALposse.

      https://pedalindustries.com/pages/join-the-pedalposse

Especially since we changed the look...

... and might I add, especially if you enjoy these emails and want a deeper connection to what we're up to.

      MY TOP 3 CYCLING MOVIES

      MY TOP 3 CYCLING MOVIES

      Mar 16, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

IT'S PRETTY EASY FOR ME TO WHINNY THE LIST OF CYCLNG MOVIES DOWN TO 3.  Frankly there just aren't many to choose from.  That said, there are a few I love.

First, the classic, Breaking Away.  This was my introduction to passionate cycling.  I found it while I was in college.  I was already dating my bicycle, but here came the love affair that has never ended.

Best line:  I want something American damnit, gimme some french fries! ... I loved that line...

... and boy could I relate to parents that didn't get it.

My dad made an emergency visit, as cycling had her finger wrapped around my heart.  He was concerned at my weight loss - 162.  All the time riding indoors as snow fell.  Clearly I'd gone mad.

      What possesses us?

It's nearly impossible to describe, but it's very obviously and purely romantic.

Second, A Sunday In Hell.  Is there anything more better than Roger De Vlaeminck and Eddie Merckx pulling up to Paris Roubaix in their own sports cars with multiple bikes mounted to the top?  Both of them gushing with style and confidence.

Their crews anxiously greeting and fawning over them.

Of course, De Vlaemink is on a Gios... the same electricbluewonder I scraped my summer savings to buy in '86.

This documentary is so pure and honest and brutal in the truth of what it means to race.

Third, and don't hate me... well, you can... but...

Third, for me, is the first Rocky movie.  Yes, Rocky!

From the training scenes to drinking raw eggs to ultimate underdog status... this movie epitomizes why I love the build up as much or more than the racing, and why I love the finish as long as I know I gave it my all.

Silly as it is, it is just amateur racing after all, but on more than one occasion of an epic Leadville or Vision Quest or LoToJa I've crossed that finish line and yelled Susie, Susie, Susie... so glad she's put up with me all these years.

So, there you have it.  As you toil from home and wonder what to do after you've ridden a ton while "working remotely", you can always dig into these classics.

And... if you need to load up on nutrition you know I've got ya covered.

      IT'S BECOMING A HOBBIT

      IT'S BECOMING A HOBBIT

      Mar 14, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I'M FEELING QUITE HAPPY GO LUCKY THIS WEEK.  In spite of rain every single day, I managed to get in 7 rides in 5 days.

      Kinda like a Hobbit...

... you know first breakfast and second breakfast.

Dodging the rain showers - they were hardly storms - I squeaked in a couple of twoadays.

Today's were great... sticking with the food theme, it was a family sandwich.  Ride in the morning, meet the kid's for lunch, ride in the evening.

With projected midday rain, I grabbed HVY MTL - my gravel bike - and followed a new route to get things started.  That bike has really opened up a whole new world of rides.  It's a more creative kind of riding, following the pull of any trail or road or sidewalk that needs exploring or curb that needs jumping.

For better or worse, with the unpredictable weather, I'm tending to do more soul riding than structured training.  Scratch that, it's definitely for better.

After surfing the roads and trails around town on HVY MTL, we checked out a new condo the kids are looking at leasing.  It's closer to us.  It's so fun to be part of their lives.  Feeling very lucky about that. Then we showed them the nearby tasty Greek food at Surfin' Souvlaki.

Chris and I met at the bottom of the San Juan Trail at 3pm.  All single track, straight up for an hour.  30 minutes back down.  The top was in the clouds, cold and misty.  Chris pulled the plug after 1 lap.  I went for another..

... it turned out to be the best ride of the week.

When I got back near the summit the cloud had cleared.

      A full sky.

      Not a rider around.

      Irresistible peace everywhere.

      And little ol' me.

      Covered in it,

Like the misty dew drops, gently cleansing my soul.

      Yep, I'm feeling very lucky.

But, it wasn't luck that kept my water from launching out as Sparky and I were were shredding hero dirt.

No, that bottle stayed put because I have the best water bottle cage ever.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/mandible-bike-cage

      WHAT WE SAY:

Been racing these cages for 8 years.  The same cages, taking them from bike to bike.  Nothing - NOTHING - holds a bottle like the Mandible.  If you're racing the bumpy stuff, this is the only cage to get.. Not because it's crazylight, because it works.

      Weighs a scant 28 grams.

      WHAT THEY SAY:

Mandible is the top Arundel model; its grip is the strongest of all Arundel cages. It's great in extreme situations. Mandible cages have weathered the Grand Tours, the Spring Classics, Worlds, all of it. Durable and elegant.

Here's the dealio... we're putting in an order on Tuesday, will ship about a week later.

      Use promo code FRODO

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/mandible-bike-cage

Note... I was going to hold off on ordering these until we moved to our new location, but ya know... the rain's gonna stop, the snow's gonna melt, and I'm wanting the best for you.

      DON'T DISTURB THIS GROOVE

      DON'T DISTURB THIS GROOVE

      Mar 13, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

THERE'S THIS WEIRD THING THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN AN "A" RACE GETS CLOSE.  I don't know if it's the pressure I put on myself or if it's focusexhaustion.  But, it's real.  And, I must deal.

      Am I weird?

Yes, Old Diesel... you are weird.  We all are, and we love it.

Oh, that warms my fit and strong heart.

So, here's my deal... I just don't have the fire to get out and ride as the A race approaches and gets more and more real.  The rides seem like drudgery.  It takes conscious commitment to go out and do them...

... but, I do go out...

      ... and guess what?...

... once I'm out there, within a mile or 5, I'm in the groove and wanna ride all day.

Why is the Sagebrush Safari an A race for me?

      Well,

      • The fastest guys in my age group are gonna be there
      • The course is fantastic, and while I will lose big time on the opening 7 mile climb
      • The descents are ALL perfect for T.O.D - fast and flowy

      ... "So, you're saying I've got a chance"...

And that's the kind of thinking that gets The Old Diesel fired up - shootin' smoke out the pipe.  The fact it's hardly a given I'll do well, but that I have a chance.

      I love that.

When we were young and just getting started SurferGirl found this song, Don't Disturb This Groove.  She played it over and over.  On days like today, it's on my mental sound track.  It just pops up and reminds me...

... once I'm in my groove...

      ... their ain't no stopping...

So I grab a kit that matches the groove of the day.

Today it's this kit, because Sagebrush Safari is right on the Mexican border... and while it's too high for cactus blooms, there will be plenty of soul searching in a race like this.

SO THIS MORNING, THE OL' WEATHER APP SAID CLEAR SKYS 'TIL 11.  I looked out across the horizon (we are on a hill and I can see 70+ miles when it's clear) and it didn't appear so good, but apps never lie.  Any hour in, and it's really coming down.

It wasn't the workout I wanted, but 'twas betterthen nuthin'.

Tonight, in between doing my pushup sets, I'm laying everything out for an early morning spin...

... even though the app says rains a comin' again.

I figure the app owes me, right?  And will pay me back with an unpredicted dry spell.

Who's to say if I'm being foolish or faithish by preppring, all I know is...

... luck comes to those who are prepared.

Part of my prep is picking out the right glove for tomorrow.

      TODD BROWN

PARIS - NICE IS THE FIRST PRO TOUR RACE I'VE WATCHED THIS YEAR, and it seems like a good time to weigh on which teams did a good job on their 2020 kit design.

I'm only going to talk about the top 3 team designs, because the rest are terribleboring.

INEOS - unique colors, clear who the title sponsor is...

These cues of course are not surprising because they are the same eyecatching cues used when SKY exploded onto the scene.  We instantly know which team, and who is the sponsor.

EF - bold colors, first to introduce the fade so many teams have followed...

Vaughters has a history of bringing in a new design element going back to the early days of his Garmin-Cervelo team with their argyle.  And, I really like what they are doing with the punchy colors and fades.

What you may not know is our designer Joe - creator of the Wild Child designs and others - designed those early kits for Vaughters.

MCLAREN - I know it says Bahrain, but who cares... McLaren man!

Here are truly striking colors with design nods to the Formula 1 team.  This is my favorite kit for 2020.  I'd like it even better if they could ditch the rest of the sponsors cluttering things up.

What does any of that matter?  Well, not at all unless you're looking for a kickash kit design for your team.

Keep these 3 things in mind:

      • Bold Colors
      • Striking design
      • 1 main sponsor/team name

Even if you have a legacy color, or legacy elements there are ways to tell that story visually that will allow you to stand out.

Sponsors like standout designs, fans like stand out designs... and crew wants that too.

Here's a little side note, business story.

We use to offer free artwork, it seemed like a good thing to do.  But, the problem was it took forever to wrap up a project.

Now we charge, and the projects are not only better designed but done in record time.

No matter what business you're in...

... when people pay, they pay attention.

Here's another one, and it's a lot more relevant to this post...

... when you feel fast, you ride fast.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/feel-fast-ride-fast-available-in-5-colors

We're going to close this design out to make room for our upcoming move.

      Use promo code BENIECE...

... and you can have this T delivered for $12.

NOBODY EVER WON A RACE DRAFTING

      TODD BROWN

NOBODY EVERY WON A RACE DRAFTING.  The only way to win is by being in front.  Leading.

      Which means taking chances.

Sure we can sit and hide and conserve.

But, sooner or later we've got to lead or we'll never cross the finish line first.

      Which means work.

Working out what it takes to be the leader at the only moment that counts.

Is it sprinting for the win?
      Breaking away?
      Out cornering?
      Out climbing?

There's a million ways to win,
      all of them require risk
      and commitment
      and vision.

None will be accomplished in someone else's draft.

WHILE I CAN NEVER SEEM TO REMEMBER WHICH TIME IS THE FAKE ONE, I love it when we spring forward.  The dark mornings don't bug me, the dark afternoons do.  To celebrate, and on the eve of rainmegeddon, I hung the lights and rolled on out at 630pm.

I guess I'm alone in this jubilation.

Or, maybe it was the howling southern wind.

      The darkening and cloudy sky.

Because it was a strange ride.

I didn't see another soul out riding.

      Not one.

Looping toward home the first super moon of the year lit up the clouds, bursting through in bits and pieces.

It's colossalness spreading a peaceful calm across the sky.

To that I add this peaceful kit.  I had Joe design this kit with one objective:  peace.  It was late 2019, and my cyclesense sensed a peaceful kit would be a nice treat for 2020.

      IMAGINE "OLD CALIFORNIA" BEAUTY
      - rolling hills, coastal sage brush, granite boulders big and small.

Now add miles and miles of easytopass singletrack
      - flowyfastfun trails you dream about and want to ride forever

      ... I probably shouldn't even post this.

Because now that I've figured out the Sagebrush Safari is the best XC course in Southern California, I want it all to myself.

It's a miracle this race isn't an overrun shyteshow with 2000+ racers on the line ala Leadville and Epic rides...

... it might get that way.

      But, I hope not.

I hope it stays in the hundreds and off the radar.

I hope enough people come to be very profitable for Victor, and not one more.

      It's too good.

      Too fun.

It's also too good and too fun not to share.

So, I'll tell ya what... the first person to share this post on FB, Insta and Strava will get their entry paid for by little Ol' me... unless you're already registered, in that case you can gift it to your favorite pal.

Just shoot me links of your handiwork.

It was rather chilly when we started, 43degrees chilly.

I was glad I'd packed my KOM jacket... you know, the one I designed to wear on days like this.

It was perfect until it warmed up, then I tucked it easily into my middle jersey pocket.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/pedal-industries-wind-jacket-black

So, if you have any days planned with chilly/wet starts you'll want to have this jacket.  It's wind and water resistant membrane is super thin and breathable, yet kept me warm and dry.

THEY LAUGHED AT ME WHEN I PUT ON MY CAMELBAK

THEY LAUGHED AT ME WHEN I PUT ON MY CAMELBAK

      Mar 07, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

WE ALL RODE TO THE TOP TOGETHER, I knew this first descent would be a preening of who's got speed/get outta my way.  So, I let them go.  Gave 'em quite the head start.  Then, I, the dork with Camelbak, proceeded to pick them off one by one.

One gent 'splained how he had to go slow as he was afraid his water bottle would be ejected over the rocky terrain.

I've never seen a Camelbak get ejected - but I have seen a rider get ejected and have his back protected by the liquid-filled bladder.

Another claimed he was bonking because he'd forgotten to drink.

It's so easy to drink and race with a Camelbak - jam hose in mouth, spit out when done.  No futzing about grabbing a bottle the trying to race and drink with 1 hand on the bar then somehow getting the bottle back in the cage... all while negotiating a techy single track.

I'm not saying the Camelbak was the reason I was shredding the DH, but I am saying there's a lot to be said for rocking the Camelbak...

      ... it's secure and it's easy.

Which is part of my secret to DH speed.

I learned it from the unlikeliest of places, a book called Zen and The Art of Archery.  This is an old book, and a quick read.  It's an autobiography of an amateur archer on assignment in Japan who winds up shooting with zen masters of archery.

My big takeaway:  hold onto the bars firmly, all nonessential muscle in your arms should be flaccid.

That simple skill is so hard to master, seems so trivial, and is a key to uncorking real speed on a mountain bike.

Speaking of uncorking... what's this dork drinking?

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/3-2-1-hydration-base

      I'm a big believer in GQ6.

I go with 2 scoops in a bottle, or 4 scoops in my Camelbak (50oz).  Basically 2 scoops/hour.  It's about 200 calories per hour.

If you want to check it out, use this promo code:  THEYLAUGHEDATME

IF YOU WANT TO UP YOUR CUTTHROATNESS, cue up F1: The Drive To Survive on Netflix.  It's got racing, it's got drama... and best of all, it's an inside view to what it takes not just to make the team, to win a race, but how you keep you job.

The big AHHA for me was this... every team has 2 drivers, in identical cars.

      You know why?

Because the fastest of the 2 is going to keep his job.

      Brutal.

Imagine starting every training ride, testing all your equipment, knowing your training partner is doing all she can to beat you... even at the races.

We kind of see it in the highest levels of road racing:  Froome v Wiggins, Movistar's 3 headed monster, LeMond v Hinault etc.

Tonight, while your doing your pushups or pullups or yoga and getting all fired up watching Netflix' F1...

... who are you planning to slay tomorrow comehellorhighwater?

If you're a killer or feel like it sometimes, this might be the kit for you

      https://pedalindustries.com/collections/jailbreak

It's our Speed Jersey Short Sleeve because... SPEED!

And, our Pro Bib because... PRO!

I know those are simplistic, hyperbolic reasons... so let me add all the fabrics are the finest Italy makes, and Italy makes the best.

The sleeves and legs are finished with a wide, comfortable gripper that holds the fabric perfectly in place.

The pad in the bib is rated for racing all day.  It's high-density, which means it doesn't feel like an adult diaper and it won't put your special purpose to sleep.

IF THERE WERE A MOUNT RUSHMORE OF CYCLING

IF THERE WERE A MOUNT RUSHMORE OF CYCLING

      Mar 05, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

WHO'S CARVED ON MY MOUNT RUSHMORE?  If I owned a granite mountain, and if I was a talented artisan, I'd carve these heads for all to see.  Instead I've carved the ideas and emotions of these four racers into my mind, and in a sense my own body... I'm guessing you've done something similar.

      EDDY.

The great Eddy Merckx gave the greatest advice when asked his secret:  Piles of Miles.  So simple, so true.  Nothing beats time in the saddle.  Ever.

But, there's more to that for me.  Most know he won the Tour de France a record setting 5 times.  He also one many 1 day classics as well as all kinds of track racing.  If mountain biking was a thing in his time, he'd have dominated that... and forget gravel.

Bonus:  he was merciless, hence his nickname The Cannibal.

      LEMOND.

7 seconds.  That's the narrowest victory of the Tour De France ever, and Greg LeMond will own that indefinitely.

I remember watching it on ABC.  It was unbelievable, making up 50 seconds in a short time trial on the last day of the tour.

Yes, he's USA'n, and first USA'n to win Tour.

But, for me, the impressive part was his belief in himself, that against all France he would win.

Bonus, he broke the tradition of leaving wife and family at home - family first.

      COACH JOE.

Joe Friel wrote the Cyclist's Training Bible.  Finally here was a detailed, workable plan, and I gobbled it up.

I had the pleasure of eating with lunch with Joe a few years ago, and I can tell you he's just as nice and thoughtful as he comes across in the book.

Bonus:  in his 70's he's still totally geeked on cycling... just like us.

      SAGAN.

He crushed the competition at his first Tour of California, and I was hooked on his style.

He's a man of and for the people.

After that first ToC he came and raced our local weekly MTB race.  I thought it was just some wannabe in a Cannondale kit.  I lined up next to him, and he was nice as could be... then he disappeared.

Bonus:  he get's a lot of video time on his winning sprints and I've learned a ton watching and rewatching them.

      Who's on your Mount?
Who inspires you when you're training, planning, racing?

Sometimes throwing on my kit feels kind of like becoming a different person, probably has something to do with all the inspiration.

By far the best way to change at the races with with the changing poncho.  It's easy, modest, fast.

FAMOUS ACTOR CLAIMS TO KNOW ABOUT RACING

FAMOUS ACTOR CLAIMS TO KNOW ABOUT RACING

      Mar 04, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I CAN'T THINK OF ANY STATEMENT THAT BETTER CLARIFIES what racing is all about.  And, it's from an actor...that's right and actor... is there anything more fake than acting?  Yet, this actor gets it.

The emotion is real and raw... and resonates through every bone in every realracer's chiseled-on body.

      Because... he actually raced.

      A lot.

      And won.

His words come from that place only people like us have experienced.
      Only a racer gets this.
      It's unmistakably pure.

      Racing is life.
      Everything else is just waiting.

      -
      Steve McQueen

      I love that.

For me, it's not that time stops when racing.
      It doesn't exist at all...
      ... just life.

      The inner voice, gone.
The cares of the world, gone.

      Just me,
      my bike,
      and my beating heart.

When the finish line is crossed, and the bottles are empty, I tend to want to keep my kit on.  Relish the moment kinda thing.  Sometimes a little longer than I should.

Which is one of the reason, before the race, I like to lube up the area of my crank and cogs.  Somehow that sounds a little pervy, but it's not...

... it's a simple call to action:  Protect thy special purpose!

MASSIVE SPEED INCREASES FOR A LITTLE BIT OF TIME

MASSIVE SPEED INCREASES FOR A LITTLE BIT OF TIME

      Mar 03, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

THERE ARE A LOT OF WAYS TO GO FASTER, most involve a lot more time training and more money.  Some of those are simple experience.  Take my pal Senor Suave, while a rocket on any bike he keeps losing time MTB racing.

For example, he did one of his first legit MTB races recently.  Everything was on schedule except his bladder.  Most races this is not a big deal, but experienced MTB racers would never make this mistake...

... and when he came back to line up, the corral was full and he found himself 50 people back in the pack.

      Pee early.
      Line up early.

But, that yellowhighliter ain't my point today.

This little gem requires a teenyweeny bit of time, and maybe a couple of bucks - maybe...

... and I'll be doing it this Saturday.

      Preride the race course.
The more you can preride, the faster you'll go.

You're going to be riding anyway, so ride the course.

      Figure out places
      to pass
      that suite your strength
      tricky sections until their easy
and so on and so on and so on
      until when you're on it,
      you own it!

What if the course is far away?
Get there a day or two early.

What if it's just a 4 corner crit?
      Ride 'em 4 thousand times.

      What if....
      Makeithappen Cap'n.

Which is exactly what Senor Suave did passing 45ish people, finishing fourth.
I predict a podium in the very near future for him.

I also predict a few of you are gonna wanna jump on this before the price goes up.

PERFECT, PIOUS UNCLE PHIL WAS ONCE ACCUSED OF SWEARING... impossible to imagine 70 years ago... coming from him.

      Phil asked Who?

      So and so.

Oh yeah... well, it's true.  It was the only way I could get that S.O.B outta bed and out the door to work!

I have found this method quite effective in my own life.

THE SIMPLEST WAY FOR OLYMPIC SPEED

      TODD BROWN

WHEN YOU'RE AN ENDURANCE ATHLETE, when you really know how to dig, scrape and claw... you know truth when you see it.

And, I love this quote from Molly Seidel:

I wasn’t paying attention to the miles or pace and just going off feel and when we made our move I just wanted to keep running the pace I felt good at.

      That is truth.

It's why a lot times I'll toss the ol' computer in my back pocket when racing.

      And leave it there.

Sure, I like looking at the data when it's all done... but some formats I find it too distracting...

... like any event under 2ish hours.

Who is Molly Seidel?... oh, just the first person who ever ran a marathon and at the same time qualified for the Olympics.

      THE OLYMPICS!

      That's right...

      ... just going off feel...

      ... 'cause it felt good.

Dawgawn... I love that, gotta say it again:

I wasn’t paying attention to the miles or pace and just going off feel.

Going off feel, isn't that the be feeling?

      Ever?

I know what you're thinking... musta been a long time ago, before the "modern age".

      Nope.

      It was Saturday.

      2hours27minutes31second.

      ... just going off feel.

There's another kind of feeling, it's feeling of feedback I get through my hands.
Personally, I prefer very thin gloves.
      Real leather.
      No padding.
      Immense ventilation.
      Full fingers.

ENTER SANDMAN - GRITTY ADVICE FOR SMOOTH RIDING

ENTER SANDMAN - GRITTY ADVICE FOR SMOOTH RIDING

      Feb 29, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I RECENTLY SAW A THREAD ASKING HOW TO RIDE SAND SECTIONS AT BWR.  Numerous longworded discussions followed.  Here's my simple truth:

      1.  Ride more sand.

Nothing is going to make up for actually riding sand... so if you don't live by a lovely beach, get down to the local play ground...

      ... practice.

      2.  Aim for 10' beyond where the sand ends.

I think it was Moses who said Where there is no vision the people perish.  Whoever shared that ancient advice woulda been a heckuva gravel/mtb racer.  Because if you're looking straight down and not far forward you're gonna perish...

... look where you want to go.

If you just did those 2 things you'd be an ace in no time.

There are two more essential techniques which you'll probably figure out with enough practice.

However, if you want to cut to the chase you'll need to click here:

I WAS ON THIS DIET YESTERDAY, and I lost 5 lbs.  It's a terrible diet.  One you should turn to only as a last resort.  But, it's nearly impossible to even try it on purpose.  Not that you should.  You could.  But, I wouldn't.

This diet is so debilitating I couldn't race today, even though I'm the lightest I've been in a year.

      Weight down, power way down.

      So I'm here.

      On the couch, recovering.

It's the El Pollo Loco foodpoisoning diet... at least that's who I'm giving credit to, 'cause against my monklike ways I ate there Thursday - in a hurry, making things happen.

Spent all day Friday praying to the porcelain god - 12am on baby!

      I'm on the mend today.

Surfergirl picked up a pack of donuts at my insistence... I knew I'd be better soon, and wanted something delicious to look forward to.  And, boy do they taste great!

I can't resist... I guess, because I'm going to get up and ride for a bit at some point today and I know I'll be needing lots of fuel in my Ferris Bueller I'msuddenly better moment.

Here's what I'll be chowing on my ride.

THE SUPERPOWER ONLY BIKE RACERS HAVE

THE SUPERPOWER ONLY BIKE RACERS HAVE

      Feb 27, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

LAST NIGHT I PATIENTLY WAITED TO TURN LEFT IN MY CAR.  The light turned green, I looked left and eased off the brakes rolling forward... I looked left again and hit the brakes!

A truck traveling about 50mph blazed through the red.... probably would have killed me...

... if I didn't have the bike racing superpower.

      But, I do.

      And so do you!

      We all have Cyclngsense,
      it's our version of Spidersense.

We use it all the time, every ride.

The more we ride, the stronger it gets.

The experienced rider rarely flats, new guy flats all the time.

      Cyclingsense.

New gal struggles on a trail, experienced gal attacks it with glee.

      Cyclingsense.

Driving experiences like mine above happen all the time, our Cyclingsense is so attuned we often don't even recognize it.

Same with sports, we quickly pick up any motion sport... our fitness, our developed peripheral vision, our Cyclingsense making it easy.

Socially too.  We casually strike up a conversation with a fellow rider and our Cyclingsense quickly evaluates friend or foe.

Because 99% of drivers lack Cyclingsense, I ride with blinking lights day and night.

I love the little Knog lights,
      330 degrees of retinasearing power.

It's like giving Cyclingsense to the drivers.

And isn't that a gem of an idea?

If you don't have daytime blinkies get these.
      They're lite and aero.

The 3 words you never want to say or hear at a bike race

The 3 words you never want to say or hear at a bike race

      Feb 26, 2020

WHAT MOTIVATES ME MORE THAN ANYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO BIKE RACING PREP is making sure none us ever utter these 3 words on RaceDay.  Nothing is more deflating, defeating or defanging.

      I forgot my __________.

      The results can be...

embarrassing... I've raced in my bathing suit and tank top.

inconvenient... I've borrowed a friend's sweattystinky backup helmet.

disastrous... I even forgot my shoes once.

... heck, doesn't even have to be a race...
... might just be a road trip with the crew.

Which is exactly why I invented the RaceDay Bag™...

      • Easy to pack
      • Easy to find our gear
      • Easy to get ridin' and racin'

Kicking boodwah on a bike starts with confidence, like knowing you've got everything you need.

      But why stop there?

Want to know what it's in my bag, what I trust... depend on?

I thought it was impossible for a lotion to make any kind of a noticeable difference in race performance...

... then I podiumed at a race where I'd always sufered,

and set a PR of 8:15 at Leadville!

I'll neverever race again without PR Lotion.

      https://pedalindustries.com/products/amp-pr-lotion

Follow the application instructions... be sure to put on a lot, and really massage it in!

When you place your order use this promo code: AMPSAVE10

... I was reminded of how great this product is just yesterday on our regular legripping group ride when Justin said,

      You're riding great.

Now those are 3 words I always want to hear!

THE 3 RIDERS I ADMIRE MOST

THE 3 RIDERS I ADMIRE MOST

      Feb 25, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

AS WE WERE SLICING AND DICING OUR REGULAR SOCIALRIDE/LEGDESTROYER THIS MORNING, I catalogued the 3 riders I  admire most.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a total Saganfanboy, worshipped LeMond's 7-second TdF win, and have relived Grewal's gold medal countless times... but, I don't ride with them.

      I ride with these cats:

      Takeshispulls guy.
This rider rotates through to the front, takes his pull and eases over and off the power, doing all he can to keep the group's pace fast and smooth... never mucking it up, sucking wheel at the front.

      Standsupsmooth girl.
The girl stands gracefully stands up on climbs, often... never thrusting the bike back, scaring - or worse - the rider behind.

      Pointsstuffout kid.
This kid is always pointing out the holes, sticks, glass, etc... making sure the riders behind avoid peril.

These 3 make rides like today's trulytruly glorious.

So, I study their moves and do my best to mimic them... 'cause when I'm all growed up I wanna be just like 'em

You know what else is trulytruly glorious?...

      THE F WORD

      THE F WORD

      Feb 24, 2020
      by
      TODD BROWN

I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I FOUND THE NOCARS WAY THROUGH TOWN.  There were cars, but not many.

I rode and rode and rode that route.  Mostly on Mondays, always by myself.

It was scenic, with a few punchy hills to stand up and pound the pedals.

But, then I didn't ride it much.  I'd ridden it too much.

      It had become...

      ... Familiar.

No, it wasn't breeding contempt, but it was...
      Mundane.
      Predictable.
      Uneventful.

Conversely, we ride the same loop every Tuesday, going on 17 years.  It's always good.

Gus lives out in NC.  He sent me a pic of their Saturday ride.  The leafless trees, bundled riders.  The smiles.  It was 18 when they started, 40 midday.

It ain't the route or the weather, it's the people.

Which is why it's so key to have a silent chain, spinning free with no drag.  'Cause if your chain is whiney with lots of drag... sooner or later you'll be riding alone.

These are my go to products - one to clean, one to lube.  It took years time to find them, and I'd never mount up without them.

The superpro thing to do is to wipe the chain clean and apply the lube the night before - one link at a time.  Painstaking, I know... but totally worth it if going fast is important to you.  And, when done correctly will last hundreds of miles.
