WHAT I KNOW ABOUT GOAL SETTING
WRAPPING UP THE YEAR, is a lot like wrapping up Christmas presents. We have these memories and milestones...
... to look back on later.
Gifts to ourselves.
What if we knew what gifts we'd be wrapping up for ourselves next year?
Would we plan our 2026 calendar differently?
Change up our goals...
... if their accomplishment was a given?
Now that you've done that little thought experiment, I'll share this with you.
The biggest accomplishments in my past were never concerned with...
- little details
- strategies
- tactics
... only What.
From there it was just a matter of making it real.

HR TRAINING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE the joy of climbing with friends to a distant peak and poking through the clouds. Summiting is like having...
... the top of the world to ourselves.
All is calm.
Bombing down the mostly unfamiliar other side...
... not so calm.
Heaven forbid we'd let a gap open and get left behind.
Already on the edge of grip, I came into a sweeping lefthand turn...
... a negative radius, sloping downward.
I drifted all the way wide to the soft bulldozed berm.
Exiting, it was nothing but steep with ruts and rocks competing for my attention.
It wasn't looking good.
Somehow I managed to wiggle through the gauntlet.
My HR now sky high.
Only one thing to do, let out a huge...
... WOOOOHOOOOO!!!
Sheesh, my heart skipped a beat just reliving and writing this.
It.
Was.
Awesomeness.
Had I gone down,
I wouldn't have died.
But, it woulda been a bloody mess firshur.
Glad I kept my eyes open
and arms relaxed,
the tires held...
... just another reason to be grateful this time of year.

WHO KNEW WE WERE THAT BAD?
THE PROGRESS WE MAKE can be kind of embarrassing. We don't know it at the time. In fact, we're having so much fun those early pics and vids...
... can be kind of embarrassing.
There's hope.
Bad athletes,
can get good.
Good athletes,
can be great.

THE OTHER 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
A LOT OF US plan to do some superspecialsecret training when nobody is looking in the coming days. Some are going so far as to...
... do the outrageous.
A gift to ourselves.
Which reminds me of one my pals who each year would ride a century 12 days in a row.
That was his goto way to start the year with a bunch of base miles.
Of course, the family and friends all thought that was...
... akin to getting coal for Christmas.
Personally, my overarching diabolical (counter season or counter intuitive?) plan is to...
- play around on jumps and technical stuff
- catch up with friends
- have fun
... make the training count.
What are you planning for 12/25 thru 1/6
While you're thinking about that...
... I'm sharing this kit with you in the off chance you're looking so spoil yourself with something outrageously sexy...

THE SALARIES of the tops pro seem fantastic. The lifestyle unbeatable. Who doesn't want to get...
... paid to train and travel the world?

But...
... it's too late, you're too old, you lack talent, you don't have time, you're too young, your equipment sucks, your friends and family won't approve, you'll nevereverver freakin' make it...

our travel will be less exotic,
we can still focus on...

- honing our craft

WE WON THE LOTTERY!
WE DON'T DREAM enough. At least most of us. When we do, and I'm not talkin' 'bout shut eye...
... we change our state.
Great things are suddenly possible.
I was reminded of this yesterday...
... my son was going to buy a lottery ticket.
He does this when it's over a billion.
I told him how much...
- it allows us to dream
- things we'd change
- do or never do
... I love and hate the lottery.
Name one thing you'd do?
I'd never get up to an alarm clock again?
Later, I reflected on my greatest day on the bike.
In 2022.
The insane Leadville goal of...
- a PR
- sub-8 hrs
- at age 60
... and how I did it.
The dream of sub-9 at sixty started years prior.
Always in the back of my mind.
But, there.
How it would feel to be in that kind of shape.
The closer the date got,
the more real it became.
Until I believed I could not only go sub-9,
but shatter my 6 previous efforts.
We can win our own lottery...
- crystal clear
- detailed
- belief
... if we'll just start dreaming.

IS IT THE SACRIFICE?
WHY DO SOME OF US stick with the endurance thing year after year after year and others check in for a season or two then check out...
... never to return?
There is something unseen happening.
I think I know what it is.
Sacrifice.
For better or worse...
- could be skipping a new car for a better bike
- an hour later out at night for an early run
- a quick swim instead of a tv binge
... we've sacrificed something.
That sacrifice produces the faith necessary to really go for it,
go for that insane physical goal we've set.
It gives us hope.
And, we love that...
... in everything we do.

YOU'RE GONNA SAY THIS IS IT
THINGS AREN'T GOING to go according to plan. Everything is going to go south. Everything. And you're going to say this is it..
... This is how I end.
You can accept that,
or you can get to work.
That's all it is.
You just begin.
Solve one problem.
And then the next.
If you solve enough problems...
... you get to cross the finish line.
Adapted from the closing scene of The Martian.
It's a long movie,
about solving problems,
which is what we do the moment...
... we register for a race or commit snagging that elusive PR.
(highly recommend the movie)

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
IF WE'RE REALLY LUCKY, and we (you n me) are, we'll stumble into something that keeps us endlessly fascinated. No matter how much we do it, or how long we put it on pause...
... it is always, ALWAYS, a ton a fun.
How can we do it forever?
At a high level?
Before I tell ya the answer...
- age
- friends
- failure to progress
... we gotta accept the challenges.
1. If we aren't on point with our health choices, age may ravish us...
... and not the sexy kind.
2. As the playground circles the sun...
... many of our friends will hang it up (see #1.)
3. Failure to progress...
... leads to boredom.
Today, I hooked my sassy grin...
- rode with younger cats
- picked up a new trick
- pushed my limits
... up to the firehose of youth.
1. Lucked into shredding a lot of single track with Steve and Brian...
... the schedules aligned, the conversations vibrant.
2. Coming in hot to a corner, Steve locked up the rear wheel...
... Why did you do that? To vector the turn and change trajectory.
3. Brian, did you launch off that rock?...
... Yeah, came around the turn so fast I had to.
The real secret to the fountain of youth...
... making and keeping young friends.

SOMEWHERE AROUND 8 YEARS OLD, we learn of daring. Someone gets dared. We don't even know what the word means and, yet...

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHOW A FRIEND AROUND TOWN?
GETTING A LONG-DISTANCE FRIEND TO VISIT is mostly rare, for most of us. We post to Starva, talk up our locale...
... to the point of bragging.
Then, the friend shows up.
Suddenly, we're wondering...
- will they be impressed
- can they keep up
- will they crash
... how this is gonna go down>
There was a time when Surfergirl would take such visiting friends aside and whisper...
... Be careful, he's kinda crazy.
Couldn't blame her as more than a few returned bleeding,
one with a broken bone.
It wasn't on purpose.
- I'd just forget
- be in the zone
- having a blast
... thinking they were doing the same.
The local, me...
... could rip the trails blindfolded.
Everyone else was riding blind.
Anyway...
... Tim did great today.
(I knew he would, and didn't really back it down at all.)

GOOD NEWS: THERE'S HOPE!
THIS TIME OF YEAR, the schedule gets crowded. The company parties, family get togethers, community events...
... we want to attend 'em all.
It eats into the training time.
And, that's good.
Just yesterdee, Surfergirl reminded me of our date to see Gentry.
Her favorite trio was in town for a Christmas concert.
Driving down, we wondered if we'd run into any friends,
walking in we saw my brother and sisterinlaw...
... seating, we were astonished.
We were exactly right behind them.
Couldn't have planned it better,
total surprise.
But, that's not the point.
We were carried away in the spirit of the night...
... all the world's nonsense, forgotten.
When we returned home, there was a package on the doorstep.
Incredible...
... a customer had hand made classic ornaments for each of our family members.
As a gift.
The real point is if we'll shut off the news, the pointless socials and get out to events and people we love we find...
... there's hope!
Hoping you'll find plenty of time to share your love for others in the coming weeks.

THE BEST FREE ADVICE YOU NEVER PAID FOR
WE ALL GET ACHES AND PAINS. Mostly, we just blow 'em off knowing in a few days things will right themselves. At least that's the idea. But, we are organic...
... our equipment is not.
It won't self heal,
like our miraculous bodies.
No matter how much positive energy we send it...
... those creaks won't go away on their own.
We gotta respect and inspect 'em.
I mean really figure it out.
Lemme splain it.
I've had an annoying creak for a couple of weeks.
Finally, last Friday...
- removed cranks
- checked, cleaned bottom bracket
- found a broken bolt on the chain ring spider
... thought that'd solve everything.
Mostly, kinda.
However, last steep climbs at end of Saturday's ride indicated problem not resolved.
Took into the shop for professional treatment.
Ace mechanic gives me a call.
It's not good.
How bad.
Axle in hub is cracked.
Yikes.
Yeah, it coulda been bad.
How bad?
Well, if it broke while riding it would have destroyed the hub innards, and...
And, what?
... and possibly locked up the wheel.
Now, I dunno how things are where you live, but on that ride I'd just finisihed...
... I hit 35 mph over a rocky, gravel fire road.
Had that wheel locked up...
... I'd be dead, at best.
Consider this the best free advice you Never paid for...
- bike
- bones
- muscles
... Fix thy creaks!

HAVE YOU HAD A CLASSY SMOKE, LATELY?
CELEBRATING AN EPIC EFFORT is, can be, a powerful factor in repeatability. You know, whether or not we ever do it again and...
... gain the associated benefits.
Old time movies we so classy.
In black and white.
Couple meets,
goes to dinner and dancing,
the very next scene we see...
... they are covered up, smoking in bed!!!
Here's how we do it most Saturdays.
Meet up at the corner,

the next thing we know...
... we're at the country store.
Cokes, RedBulls, chips, even had Zingers yesterday...
... our version of smoking in bed.

APPRECIATING A ROUGH START
FOR SOME GETTING STARTED is easy, for other it's hard. Even messy. So, what's better...
... an easy start or a tricky start?
Take today.
We'd climbed 4141', 13.4 miles.
The start, though steep, was pretty smooth.
The final 4.5 miles, were quite a bit rougher.
Lots of rocks.
I really suffered that last 2ish miles.
After a bit of a break,
it was time to plummet back down.
We pushed the pace pretty good those first 4 1/2 miles...
... over terrain I've flatted on many times.
I knew the next 9 miles were smoother, but...
... after the previous beating they seemed like a freeway.
We screamed down.
Surprisingly, I posted my 3rd fastest time ever.
(In case you're wondering if that was my 3rd time down, it was my 44th since 2012, per Starva)
This served as a good reminder...
... if we push through a rough start, we gain the skills to go much faster.
===
Further update on the Conti Dubitals...
- they roll reallyreallyreally fast
- corner dependably at high speed
- seem to be pretty darn puncture resistant
... I'm loving 'em.
Looking forward to playing with pressures,
I think I can run lower than the 16 and 17 I ran today.
(that was in the cold garage, before the heated up on the actual ride which would increase the pressure by a few pounds)

WHAT ARE WE RIDING SATURDAY?
WE ALL HAVE A RHYTHM TO OUR TRAINING. We have a favorite rotation of workouts, training partners, intensity...
... just like the goto dinner schedule.
When all else fails, I know spaghetti and meat balls is a winner.
No matter what I have planned.
When it comes to Saturdays, the...
- crew
- pace
- route
... I have a few defaults.
If I've had two hard sessions during the week,
I'm leaning towards a longish sweetspot/tempo ride.
If the week only had one high intensity completed,
I'm gonna wring it out on Saturday.
This week's Wednesday Worlds was kinda hard, therefore...
... tomorrow I have a nasty 1ish hour uphill TT planned.
The younsters are gonna make me hurt.
Can't wait!

TACKY, TORQUEY TESTING... CONTI DUBNITALS
GETTING NEW EQUIPMENT is always fun. Usually, it is preceded by all kinds of Kool-Aid drinking. You know, the marketing team laying it on thick...
... and our friends laughing at our antiquated ways.
This week, I bit.
Finally jumped to wider tires.
From 2.2 RaceKing in back and 2.2 CrossKing in front to...
... 2.4 Dubnitals, front and rear.
My testing took place on our local single tracks...
... while doing low-cadence, torque climbing in Zone 2.
I'd rip down,
ponder performance on way back up.
Going from 2.2 to 2.4 doesn't appear to be much,
the tires are a bit lighter than the 2.2s
My initial...
- they go from edge to edge much quicker
- seem to roll very fast
- traction is great
... reactions.
I think they're gonna be a great upgrade,
will test on the smoking fast downhills, Saturday.

MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION
IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise a child, then, for us, it obviously takes a group to train us up proper. The right gaggle...
... has countless benefits.
Number 1 being speed.
Which is why I did the Wednesday Worlds today, and rolled right into...
... Pain Cave.
When we're on form,
this is an hour segment of riding just below detonation.
Today was much easier...
- the group was slowish
- BBB and I cruised Pain Cave
- catching up and discussing next year's goals
... we were 5 minutes off the PRs.
That will come down because we committed to some rather outlandish goals.
Which means, we'll be pressing the pace on the WW ride,
then duking it out on Pain Cave.
Leading to our mutually assured destruction the rest of the work day...
... and, what we hope will be a massively successful 2026 campaign.

OTB OR OTB?
WE HAVE ALL THESE CODE WORDS and acronyms in our culture. The deeper we get into it...
... the cryptic they become.
Here's the mechanic's favorite...
... I was just riding along.
His eye's roll and he scribbles on the notes...
... JRA.
I heard another from a shop owner who was barely hanging on and his "loyal" patrons were constantly asking for discounts and free stuff...
... he called them Freetards.
I've been guilty of both of those and quickly cleaned up my evil ways once I got the hint.
But, this one...
... it's been hard to stay away from.
OTB.
This one is a two-fer,
I can't get it out of my mind lately.
Off the back...
... which is where I seem to be finding myself a little more than my liking.
Over the bars...
... luckily, my recent wipeouts have been on solo rides.

ARE YOU CHOPPING WOOD?
WE ALL HAVE A FAVORITE MOVIE, book or story. One that inspires us to be more than we currently are, or return to a place we once dominated. These myths are important because...
... they can lead and guide us to a better future.
Truly powerful.
One of my all time favorites is Rocky IV.
Rocky, seeing his once enemy, the great Apollo Creed, who became his friend and mentor, get crushed by a Russian giant...
... decides he must do something completely different.
He must go...
- runs
- pulls a sled
- carries logs
- throws boulders
- chops down a tree
... to snowy and freezing Siberia.
Maybe it's winter,
maybe it's cold...
... maybe they only way to get nasty fit is chopping wood like Rocky.

EARNING VS LEARNING
LIFE IS LIKE AN EPIC CARD GAME. We're dealt our genetic hand. As little children, we have no idea...
... we're just running around having fun.
Somewhere around the age of 8 or so we realize...
... we're not all created equal.
I can throw,
my aim is woeful.
I can run,
my friends are faster.
I can swim,
holding my breath is a struggle.
Most of us here, found we love to endure...
... persistence and suffering are out super powers.
We can't earn our way to a sub-4 minute mile, but...
... we can learn how to be faster and more efficient.
That's the journey we are on.
Learning how to be our best.

ARE YOU COMFY?
WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT comfort zones. How we want to avoid them because they hold us back, lead us to settling for...
... more than we can be.
Who wants that?
Things I think about after a less frightful drop down one of my all time favorite descents.
I held the KOM at one point,
still top 11.
Back than, I was really, really at ease on that screamer...
... in a state of flow, relaxed.
Comfy.
The good kind.
Yesterday, on the same segment, I was a hot mess.
Smiley on my rear wheel, showing his front wheel, asking...
... Are you riding cautious?
I wanted to say...
... Heck no, and Screw you!
Things were not flowing,
I was gripping.
Hard.
It was very uncomfortable because I haven't been on my MTB much the last year or so.
Practice leads to comfy,
comfy leads to flow,
flow leads to ripping.
Effortlessly.

THERE'S A LEGENDARY CLIMB
SOARING 5600' ABOVE SEA LEVEL, we have access to a legendary climb. A gravel fire road. It's the kind of challenge we can sink our teeth into, get a baseline for our fitness...
... set legit goals.
The mountain ain't movin'...
- 9 miles
- 3000'
- 6.3%
... but, we are.
The KOM is held by current world tour pro Kevin Vermaerke,
which he probably set in the NICA days.
53:10
The next 9 are local legends...
... the legit kind, not the goofy Starva thing.
There are two ways to view...
- I'm slow, and I suck
- I'm slow, and I can improve
- I'm slow, and I'm dawgawn grateful to be ripping with my pals
... today's traditional Thanksgiving effort.
One more takeaway.
When I set my PR, we lived much closer to the mountain and I'd ride it 3-4 times a month.
It was a goto.
And, it got me thinking...
... if I wanna slay like that again, I gotta do it more.
Maybe every week for the rest of 2025,
and chop 18 minutes off today's time?

I NEVER LIFTED WEIGHTS UNTIL I GOT INTO THE NFL...
MOST OF US ARE PROBABLY HEADING OUT for the local turkey trot or some sort of holiday ride. It's tradition, followed by the traditional...
... Did you ride or run today?
Which deserves...
... Yes, and the sun also rose this morning.
Earning an...
... I bet your hungry!
Usually followed by a...
... I didn't know you could eat so much pie!
At some point someone will turn on "the game".
As full as we are,
as much as that lycra gonna be stressed tomorrow...
... we realize endurance training doesn't favor or create massive muscles.
Which brings me to one of my all time favorite athletes...
... the Great Hershel Walker.
Dude was devastating in college and NFL.
This quote must have been so humiliating to those left flattened on the field....
- 2000-3000 pushups/day
- 3000-5000 crunches/day
- hundreds of pullups/day
- hundreds of dips/day
- air squats and lunges thousands
- 20-50 yard sprints
... I never lifted weights until I got into the NFL.
Damn.
We may not be - ok, never will be - built like Hershel, but...
... kinda makes ya wonder how much stronger we could be.
Dedicating little time,
from home.

STRATEGY VS THE DREAM
LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR yet? Maybe it's too early, I mean jeez it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But, almost...
... so, it might not be too soon.
There's no rule on that.
I was thinking about this on my ride yesterday.
What comes first...
... strategy or the dream.
Especially with all the InfooIncers on the socials.
You know which ones kill me....
... literally saw this one today...
... Download My 47 Points To Master Advertising Now!
hahahahahah
But, you get the idea.
We can get so hyped up on a new (to us) strategy...
- Single-legged box jumps while hula-hooping for explosive sprinting
- One million grams of carbohydrate from bonking to crushing
- Sleep like a grizzly and maul the group ride
... we start looking for a race to unleash.
I've done it,
still do it.
We can all be suckers,
the cons are as appealing as the conmen.
Anyway, what I concluded after zonetwoing my way around town was...
... The Field of Dream if we build it, they will come...
... is kinda right.
The players, errr strategies, don't show up until the field is built.
In other words, once we identify the...
- A race
- impossible PR
- unconquerable route
... then, and only then, will the strategies we need be apparent.
Let me say it differently.
We can quickly toss aside...
- techniques
- strategies
- hacks
... the worthless dross.
Because the really good stuff that works is easy to see...
... once we have our dream/goal/desire firm and clear in our minds.

JOURNALISTS ARE SO MUCH SMARTER than us fans, they have incredible insights we just can't fathom. Why it's a wonder we even...
... bother seeing with our own eyes.
This is gold.
A journo says...
... MVdP is nowhere near as good as Tadej.
On the heels of saying...
... MVdP beat Tadej on the races he wanted to win.
He being MVdP,
and he being Tadej.
Wait,

He's not as good,

MY VICE IS TERRIBLE, MY CULT IS WORSE
FEW OF US HAVE BEEN TO AN AA MEETING, but we've seen TV/movie version many times. Hi, I'm Todd and...
... I'm an endurance junkie.
Hi Todd.
When we come clean with the general population, Today I...
- swam 10,000 yards
- rode for 5 hours
- ran 20 miles
... they think we're crazy.
We're not.
The adrenaline rush of ...
- 60 miles an hour in nothing but lycra
- the swimmers blue mind
- the runner's high
... we need that hit.
Regularly.
This risks we take...
- sending it down the mountain
- running along into the cold, dark night
- impossibly holding our breath one more length
... would freakout any life insurance company.
These sensations of pushing well beyond normal, reasonable, safe...
... are often all that's keeping us stable.
In all sincerity, because the allure of the lottery and dulling our senses with substances is so very tempting and tragically treacherous...
... stay dangerous my friends.
The sane kind.

HOW WE SOLVE PROBLEMS
SOME PROBLEMS ARE HARDER than others to solve. It can be frustrating when the answers just aren't coming. This is...
... how I solve my problems.
It's a question of time, right?
The truly unsolvable problems need marinating...
- clearly identify what needs to be solved
- set aside time
- get outside
... during a very lazy ride, run or swim.
The only goal is to solve the problem.
A stop for a pastry and drink is often required...
... I carry a journal and a pen to help me flush out ideas.
The best problems take require more...
- miles
- creativity
- "fuel" stops
... 3 or 4 or a lot more sessions.
Just today I was trying to figure out what to focus on...
- goals
- events
- milestones
... for next year.
Went for a ride,
had a brainstorm,
came home to the Giant calendar.
And they think we ride just for fun and fitness!

BECAUSE IT'S BEAUTIFUL
WE ALL HAVE A WAY to perform. Whether it's vanquishing, showing off, sufferfesting, truly enjoying every moment, our individual efforts...
... leave a lasting impression.
On others,
on ourselves.
Is there a best way?
Right way?
Only way?
Let us not gaze into our own navel but...
- racers
- promoters
- business leaders
- matriarchs and patriarchs
- community and governments
... appreciate for better or worse.
It is what it is.
I was recently struck by a singer...
- unknown by most
- unwilling to submit to label demands
- who died without much fame or fortune at 33
... sold more than 10,000,000 records posthumously.
What?!... how? who?
The great Eve Cassidy sang as if every song was a gift to the listener,
with uncommon love and passion.
Nothing more.
May we all do our thing with such beauty.

ON THE GAS
A LITTLE KNOWN SECRET to not falling over is going faster. It's counterintuitive. But, it's the first thing we taught the kids when they started riding motos in the desert...
... speed is our friend.
Then why did I suffer so badly last weekend in a desert-bound gravel race?
You didn't have a motor Dingdong!
No, it's more than that...
... and I've thought about it a lot this week.
The 92-mile race
- low gradient climbs and descents
- long, long straight roads
- mostly flat
... provided very little coasting.
We had to stay on the gas.
It's not like the terrain here,
most of my ride profiles look like a lumberjack's saw blade.
Anyway, I'm thinking about that this week because I'm starting to do sweetspot training...
... 90% of FTP, without coasting.
I've got to stay on the gas (the pedals).
It's hard to do when we have so many punchy climbs and lots of turns.
But, I'm a committed fool when it comes to this stuff.

TAKE TWO, AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING
GETTING A COLD is annoying. Can't train like we want to, can't sleep well, hard to be productive. If we get near our lover fingers are raised in an X...
... so, what do we do?
To speed it up.
There are my goto...
- Zicam at first hint
- Pollo Loco tortilla soup
- Insanely hot and long showers
... rider's tales.
Then there's what I did today...
... which could massively backfire, tomorrow.
I woke up,
it was cold.
I had a cold,
and hemmed and hawed.
I consulted my alter ego Dr. Goforit, who said...
- raise your body temperature
- the nose will start to flow
- blow that gunk out
... Put on a kit and get on two wheels.
Torture.
I've had mixed success over the years.
I'll either be on my way to pneumonia...
... or good as new tomorrow.

THE GODLY CONNECTION IS STRONG IN THIS ONE
BEING OUTSIDE and unplugged is more than just an escape from "the real world". Most people in "modern society" rarely experience what that is like. We do because...
... that's where we thrive.
And, we're moving fast.
Even if we're practicing our craft daily,
and the whether is good,
we could use more.
Not less.
I experienced a snippet of much more on our road trip.
We took time to visit the land my greatgreatgrandfather homesteaded 100 years ago.
No one else was there but us.
Access is via a gravel road,
10 miles from a 2-lane highway.
No cell service.
The only inputs,
each other and nature.
The peace and solitude remarkable.
Over night, the temps dipped low enough to freeze the rain puddles from the prior evening.
We were cozy,
the van has a heater.
Still, when we rose to stretch and visit this hallowed land filled with childhood and parenthood memories...
... we were shocked by the reality of nature.
Not in a negative way,
one that makes you feel alive,
connected to more than a paycheck and bills.
To God.
To acquire the land...
- the extreme temps at 7000'
- the distance by horse or wagon to town
- the loneliness during the months no one came to visit
... E. M. Whiting had to stay on it and not leave, for two years.
How else could he make such a sacrifice if not feeling a closeness to his creator?
I feel it when I'm...
- there
- in the surf
- on our local trails
... and love it.
Need it.
And so...
- walk
- hike
- ride
- run
- surf
- swim
- camp
... we keep inviting and encouraging our friends to join us.
Outside.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE...
DISNEY CREATED AN EMPIRE animating fairytales. Because the appeal is so strong, with little to no cultural barriers we have to ask ourselves not just why, but...
... which is our favorite.
Then, why?
Personally, Cinderella is my top choice.
Not just the story arc,
the snappy dances,
or catchy songs.
There's an orphan in all of us.
Often we don't see who we really are,
out talents lying dormant.
Could be naysayers,
could be something else.
It's nice that Price Charming is a price,
it's charming that he sees Cinderella as she really is.
The point isn't...
- Where's my prince charming?
- Who will save the day for me?
- Why am I not picked?
... to wallow in our sorrows.
The point is for whom are we Prince Charming?

IT’S IN OUR DNA
TOO FEW OF US know our family history. Some barely know cousins. Great-grandparents? Forget about it. It’s just not a thing. And, yet…
… what could be more important?
To know their stories,
is to know ourselves.
Which is why we drove hours out of our way after the bike race.
Here in eastern Arizona, to soak of our roots.
Surfergirl’s great-grandfather helped settle Snowflake,
my great-great grandfather helped settle Saint Johns.
They are neighboring towns,
about 20 miles apart.
And the communities were quite friendly with each other.
You’d think we grew up out here,
and that’s how we met and married.
Not so.
I was born and raised in SoCal,
she was raised in Hawaii.
Maybe somethings are meant to be.
But, that’s not really the point.
This is hard country,
the high desert.
To carve a life and community out of nothing took strength, smarts, and massive cooperation…
… the same qualities it takes to complete very challenging endurance events.
Who is an ancestor that inspires you?

I WANNA PUT A DENT IN THAT GIRL
IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE we can say and do the craziest things. You know things we might not normally say or do. And, at the time...
... they sound/seem totally normal.
Like today.
I had the awesome opportunity to flat 15 minutes into the 92 mile race...
... suddenly I'm swearing like a sailor.
It wasn't horrific,
still, glad no one was around.
Spent the next 50 miles basically riding by myself.
Doing my best.
Jumping from group to group.
I roll up on one of the female leaders,
bridge across to another badass Barbie.
And, I hear her say the funniest thing...
... I wanna put a dent in that girl.
Speaking of the other racer.
I visualize a halloween scene,
hatchet stuck in the helmet.
Hahaha.
Then the crass, neanderthal in me thinks...
... that sounds like something I'd like to do on date night.
Not the hatchet...
... if you know what I mean.
These crazy thoughts are birthed in our very depleted states, as we...
... do our best to stay upright and moving forward.

WHY WOULD ANYBODY GO TO DOUGLASS, AZ?
RACING VENUES ARE HARD TO COME BY, especially in big cities. Almost impossible. The result is the bigger the race, the more likely we are to travel...
... someplace we've never been.
Would never go.
Here I am,
two hours south of Tucson,
on the Mexican border, in Douglass, AZ.
This gravel race has the same vibe as my first Leadville,
back in '99.
Small town,
somewhat forgotten.
Which makes it a perfect place to stage a gravel race...
... surrounded my endless gravel roads.
I decided to sponsor the race for three reasons...
- Mike, the promoter, is hella nice and persistent.
- He's a huge fan of our products
- I'm a huge fan of gravel races
... which are the only reasons to sponsor anything.
Passion and admiration for what each other are doing.
Funny story.
I have actually been here before.
Back in the 80's.
I was doing missionary work in Mexico and our visas needed to be renewed. Five us youngsters piled in a van and hit to Agua Prieto, MX. The plan was to walk across to Douglass, wait five minutes and walk back with new visas.
We were greeted with...
... No, no gringo. No se puede asi. (Not so fast whitey, you can't do it like that.)
So we...
- spent the night in Motel 6
- chomped Pizza Hut
- watched ESPN
... forgot all our Spanish.
And crossed back the next day.
I'm guessing Borderlands gravel will be slightly more challenging.
Good night now.

HURRY UP
IN OUR EFFORTS TO GET FASTER, we often think of the many benefits. Mainly health, youthfulness. And truth is...
... we are better than most, not as good as some.
Who's better?
By that, do you mean...
... how could anybody be better???
We are aerobic machines, and that is a key to longevity.
Mostly.
Here are...
- Sprints
- Weights
... the missing ingredients.
I know, I know...
- sprinting sucks
- weights can be dangerous
- and, for the weenies in the back, who wants to gain weight?
... what you're thinking.
According to research, when we lift weights not only do our bones get denser but there are intra-muscular gains to be made that we cannot get any other way.
You know what else is weird, most people in our culture never sprint again after their early twenties.
So, here's the main takeaway from all scientific facts do 'em and...
... move faster, age slower.

GIVERS
THERE ARE THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER selflessly and those who volunteer selfishly. Both are admirable. In fact, when I was a race promoter it blew my mind that...
... people just reach out and offer their assistance.
Just giving where there's an obvious need.
I ran into a selfish one tonight.
The sun had set,
my headlight was on.
I was making my way cautiously because the ruts on this particular trail are bad and...
... there's an enormous sinkhole that might kill ya.
As a get there...
... did I say it was pitch dark?...
... a man is standing with a shovel in one hand and a trowel in the other.
Creepy?
Scary?
Nope, I knew what he was up to.
Not burying bodies...
... prepping the trail so when it rains this weekend the ruts will fill in.
I stopped.
Introduced myself.
Thanked him profusely.
No need, I just moved here and can't believe how lucky we are to have these trails right here. Just wanna make 'em perfect for my kids and me to ride on.
To which I could only say...

I THINK I VOIDED THE WARRANTY
LIVING IN THE ACTION SPORTS MECCA of the world, I'm surrounded and influenced by all manner of creative, ingenious athletes. We all feed off each other. My friend Kody...
... started making super aero computer mounts.
3D printed gloriousness.
My new MTB was in need.
I reached out.
Got a mount for Roval bars?
Yes.
Cool, I'll get one.
We haven't tested for lights yet.
He thought I was asking for my road bike.
So yeah...
- the road mount is super aero
- looks freakin' awesome
- supports a light

Did my evil test void the warranty?
I dunno.

- make it
- test it

YOU GET 1 WISH
2026 WILL BE HERE soon enough. Many of us are already planning work, vacations, family time...
... and, yes, races.
You get 1 wish.
Here it is...
- lay out your Giant RaceDay Calendar
- scour the interwebs for races
- pick one, and do it

Imagine it...
- Anywhere on this giant blue marble.
- Any time of the year
- Dream equipment
- Fantastic lodging
- Clear schedule
... and ask yourself.
If not this year...
... when?
'Cause here's the deal, if we only did one race next year...
... we could probably make it happen.
It's just a mental game, play it out, and let me know...
... where, when and why.
Me personally, my top choices...
- Gravel Burn, South Africa
- Oregon Trail
- Rebecca's Private Idaho
... are gravel stage races.
Gravel Burn looks insane.

THE REBEL ALLIANCE IS GROWING
EVERY NOW AND THEN a new format or race or course or piece of equipment comes along with promises to change everything. Except hardly anything changes...
... until something sparks.
How does that work?
Like this.
About 10 years ago, I purchased my first gravel bike.
My friends, like me, were roadies and mountain bikers.
A gravel bike seemed like the worst of both worlds.
I got it,
understood where they were coming from.
Except, I was having so dang much fun...
... I didn't care.
I just kept riding gravel,
inviting my friends,
enduring their
mockery.
It wasn't overnight,
more like overdecade.
The last two Saturdays, most telling.
Eight days ago, an absolute shredder on a mountain bike shows up on a spanking new gravel bike.
30 minutes in, he's grinning and shouting...
... This looks so wrong, but gadang it's fun!
Today, another pal shows up for his first group gravel ride.
He's gifted off road, we spent years riding motos in the desert...
... We're going 30+ miles an hour, I can't believe how much ground we can cover!
Does that mean you should be riding gravel, too?
Maybe.
But, really, it's just a lesson in how things that are worthwhile spread.
Then again...
... What did the gravel bike say to the road bike?
I am your father.

FAMOUS COACHES ARE GETTING FIRED RIGHT AND LEFT
IN PRO SPORTS, or high level amateur, there is always a spot light on the coaches. At some point, blame or credit lands...
... squarely on their shoulders.
Should it?
I do love to follow college football...
- the emotional swings
- the athleticism
- the stadiums
... so much energy and unpredictablity.
Who would have thought so many megamilliondollar...
... coaches would be punted this year.
Mid-season.
The great Seth Godin wrote The Gap.
The idea behind the book is when we find ourselves unable to close the gap to our goal...
... the sooner we decide to quit and move on, the better.
It might be a pro gambling tactic as well...
... but, the only gambling I do is putting my heart, soul and cash into this business.
Anyway, would you have/have you had the guts...
... to change directions, and how quickly would you do it?

CHOOSE WORTHY ADVERSARIES
WHAT IS IT ABOUT LOVING UNDERDOGS? It's so uniquely American. Is it our origin story, the DNA of our culture...
... to cheer for the fighter with no chance?
Honestly.
Who can't feel a bit of their own soul being crushed with every blow the awesome Apollo Creed delivers to a...
... bloodied, bruised, crushed Rocky Balboa?
We've all been in that arena.
Had the bell ring.
Still standing.
Somehow.
We humans thrive against overwhelming adversaries...
- inspiration
- desperation
- exasperation
... oozing with confidence and power.
When our all is required,
we discover who we really are.
As the great Kierkegaard said...
... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

MY TOP 5 SPEED HACKS
FOR MOST OF US, going faster, getting better, has less to do with a fancy new gizmo or the latest training fad. We know that...
... but, what are doing about it?
Like the Mastercard ad says...
... some things are priceless.
Here are five...
- Sleep
- Nutrition
- Strength
- Maintenance
- Consistency
... anybody can do.
These are my hacks.
Sleep.
Figure out when we want to wake up. Get in bed 8 hours prior to that. Stay there until it's time. Eventually, our bodies get the hang of it, and boom... we're sleep doping.
Nutrition.
Eat clean. No packaged foods. If we can't identify the ingredients, we don't consume it.
Strength.
Do the basics, at home. We don't have time to drive to the gym. No need to do all the sets at once, break 'em up throughout the day. Hardly any equipment is needed: pull up bar, a few dumbbells (adjustables for the win).
Maintenance.
New equipment is so nice because it is all tight and precise. Flawless maintenance will keep that new equipment performance for years, and we'll always be race ready.
Consistency.
If we always train at the same time magic happens. Those around us learn and appreciate our commitment. We get it done. Always.
A final word.
I was never the best athlete. Not among my friends, and certainly not at school or among the general population.
I was never picked first, couldn't aim or hit anything regularity.
I wasn't the bravest or most daringist.
I did have one thing going for me...
... I freakin' loved being outside and being challenged by nature.
Today, I'm probably better than almost all my contemporaries.
That's not a flex, it's just happens.
They quit.
Which brings us to the top two hacks of all time...
... commitment and passion.

YOU'VE LOST THAT AWESOME FEELING... GET IT BACK!
THERE'S A CERTAIN SOMETHING we feel during the early days of picking up our passion. It's tangible. We can taste it. We love it...
... that's how we got here.
I'd lost it.
Over the last couple of years, drunk with stupid stats from Training Peaks and Starva...
- more time
- more miles
- more climbing
... I found myself wallowing in fatigue.
Don't get me wrong.
I'd line up, or roll out with the pals, and, though I might be quick to drift back...
... the ability to endure for hours was ridiculous.
Something snapped.
Or, lightning struck.
I dunno.
But, a few weeks ago, I woke up and said...
Screw it!
I'm cutting down the long slogs...
... and bringing back sprint days.
2-3 hours became 90 minutes.
With 10-15 VO2 max efforts,
lasting 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
I'm super fortunate to live close to trails with a lot of straight up and straight down...
... I let the terrain dictate how long the sprint lasts.

Then, focus on my DH skills...
... coasting, staying off the brakes, carving and carrying speed.
The upshot, after 90 minutes and 10+ solid efforts?
I feel amazing,
not pooped.
Sprinting engages all our muscles and focus...
... a total mind, body soul work out.
Soul?
Yeah, trust me.
Do 'em right, and you'll see stars and feel God's presence could be imminent.

YOU CAN'T GROW A BEARD OVERNIGHT
WE WANNA BE FASTER. Right now. Not this season, not this month, not this week, not today. Right now...
... 300 meters from the finish line.
Houston, we have a problem.
Go ahead.
We forgot to add fuel to the return booster.
Sucks to be you.
Yeah.
We can't grow a beard overnight.
A good one, for some of us...
... can take months.
If we wanna be fast in the final sprint,
if we wanna negative split the course...
... we gotta put in the work before we need the result.

CULTURE WARS
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TRAINING groups. Both extend invitations...
... the similarities stop there.
One culture assures...
- everyone is ready to start together
- there are plenty of stops
- nobody gets left behind
... fairness and concern.
The other demands...
- leaving on time
- no stopping
- no waiting
... rugged individuals.
The group we...
- join
- create
- help grow
... depends on the result we are looking for.

IF IT WERE EASY - Sponsored by Knog Bells
I DUMPED A LOAD OF GEARS, STOMPED ON THE PEDALS, CHAIN SKIPPED, KNEE SMASHED INTO STEM. As the blood filled the deep impression just to the side of my kneecap, it occurred to me:
This is hard...
and I love it!
That's the difference between us and them.
If it's easy, we pass.
If anybody can do it, we skip it.
We're down for the hard stuff, the demanding stuff and the stuff that scares the crap out of us:
Shooting gaps while sprinting
Launching off drops into rut-lined trails
Committing to 200 mile races
Lining up with A's knowing a pistol whipping will ensue
These are the things we do...
We aren't into easy...
We're into growing, challenging, learning... we know that hard things make us better.
We're breaking through the barriers... and we're letting people know with these awesome bells from Knog.

WHY DID THE CHICKEN BREAKAWAY? - sponsored by Knog
WE HIT THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL 40 RIDERS STRONG.
I was 10 guys back.
Then 5.
With 100 meters to go, at the steepest point, I was 2nd wheel ...
Hot damn! I must be riding really good today.
At the apex I peeked back, expecting to see the usual handful.
Instead, I saw all 40 glued to my wheel.
Through misty breath gasps it was easy to note they weren't even working.
Then it hit me.
Earlier in the ride, they'd been a little frisky at the regroup... leaving the stragglers behind (I'd know).
Being the mother hen, I took it upon myself to make very, very clear that's not the way we ride this time of year.
Yes, while I was "proudly" summitting... they timidly followed their elder.
How could I be so mean?
I feel just awful.
The only way I can make it up to 'em is by offering this amazing light for a smoking deal...
https://pedalindustries.com/products/knog-cobber-wrap-around-bike-light
I won't remind them how I feel about their many weak and worthless taillights...
I've caused enough trauma for the day...
Who the heck lets The Old Diesel beat 'em on the climb? Poor little chickies.
Use code BADDIESEL to save 25% if you want to take advantage of me in an emotionally vulnerable moment.

THE INVISIBLE CITY
I RECKON FEW OF MY NEIGHBORS KNOW THE CITY LIKE I DO, and why would they?
Belted in, they zoom from place to place.
But not me... and not you.
We wander.
Last week I found a beautiful memorial.
Placed forlornly at the dead end of a long, hard to find street, the irony was heavy.
I stopped for a personal moment of silence.

WHY WE SLEEP
I JUST FINISHED READING WHY WE SLEEP. Mike said I'd be an evangelist for the book's message, and boy was he right.
Check out what happens when we get less than 8 hours of sleep:
Time to physical exhaustion drops by 10-30%
Aerobic output is significantly reduced
Faster rates of lactic acid build up
Reductions in blood oxygen saturation
Impairment of the body to cool itself through sweating
Weight gain through loss of hunger control
100% increase in risk of injury
... and that's just the athletic stuff, there's a whole bunch more... but, who cares about a complete and well rounded life?
Personally, I think the main thing I need to do is start my shut down sequence earlier... you know, the binge watching stretching session.
I say that because I'm a morning person (that's a real thing) and it's hard for me to sleep in.
I'm gonna get up.
To ride or get to workin'
I need every edge I can get, and sleep is free!
I'd like to write a log more, but I gotta hit the hay.
Quick word... if you're jet lagged or over 50ish, melatonin is a great at kicking our brains into gotosleep mode.

I DO NOT THINK YOU KNOW THE MEANING OF THAT WORD
IT'S INCONCEIVABLE. How is it possible that I'm setting PRs as I age?
Not the climbing kind.
Or, TT kind.
The ripping the lugs off your sidewalls kind shredding a long descent...
... I wasn't really going for it because my riding buddy (gotta protect the innocent here) was off the back.
I just felt really good and very planted.
So, here's what I think is happening.
1. I have a very, very fast bike. Scott Spark. Roval wheels with ceramic bearings. Maxxis 2.2 Ikon up front, Maxxis 2.35 Aspen on the rear. 25lbs in each.
2. I'm strong. For the past year I've been very dedicated to my weight training and core work and stretching. Generally, I hate doing it but always feel awesome when it's over.
3. This is gonna sound weird, but it's true... I can see better. When I first came back to my MTB roots my eyes would scramble over rough terrain. Like they were loose, rattling around. Everything would go fuzzy at speed. But, by riding a lot of MTB they have steadily gotten stronger to the point that my vision is stabilized. Weird, right?
Now, if you're really hauling @$$ like I am, you've got to have a great connection to your bike. Which is why I've worked so hard on these gloves.
https://pedalindustries.com/pages/gloves
The leather palms are super thin and perforated. The top is perforated polyester... you can see your skin. They are super light.
I may be sweating like craycray, but I neverever slip and my hands are always cool.
They come in lots of colors, and yes we'll make 'em to match your team gear.

NO LUNCH FOR YOU!
I'D FINALLY DID IT. Committed that from today forward, every Friday would feature a lunch ride. Not a beat down, but an upbeat friendly sorta thing.
I geared up.
Took a meandering dirt and street route over to Kawamata Sea Food.
The weather couldn't have been better.
Just me for the first go. Mainly to prove to myself I could and would quit working for a bit at Noon vs my usual 2pm.
I was quite proud, thinking this is great. It's mid-day and I'm out riding. This route is cool. The posse is gonna dig it. And oh man I can't wait for a delicious poke bowl.
About half the seats outside were open.
Leaned HVY MTL (my gravel bike) by a table for two and jettisoned helmet, glasses and gloves.
Walked in, ordered... and the horror... Cash only, bro.
I'd forgotten my RaceDay wallet.
-> insert sad trumpets here <-
Dejected. I did the walk of shame to my bike.
Not all is lost. I proved to myself I can make the schedule work, and really that's all I needed for a win.
At least I didn't forget my commitment.
Probably because I was wearing this ridiculously soft, 100% t-shirt.
It's an athletic cut, not a boxy thang. You're an athlete, right?

DUDEDUMBNESS
IF YOU'VE RIDDEN WITH ME LATELY, then you may have noticed I'm always maneuvering to be on your right side.
The only thing I fear about riding in the gutter is nothing... I'm perfectly comfy pegged to the curb.
But, my reason for doing is sheer Dudedumbness...
.. . that thing when you're a dude and you're hurting and you don't go to the doctor until it's unbearable. In my particular case, I couldn't hear shyte outta my right ear.
Mr Todd, what brings you in?
Huh?
WHY. ARE. YOU. HERE?
'CAUSE. I. CAN'T. HEAR. SHYTE. OUTTA. MY. RIGHT. EAR.
My doc is savvy. He's seen my type. Moved to my left side.
Why are you here?
I'm tired of fighting to ride in the gutter, Doc.
Hmmmm... well, there's a lot of that going around.
Really?
20 minutes later, I'm good as new. Ready to ride, either side.
Am I cured of Dudedumbness?
You'd think so.
Then again, if you're a gutter surfer like me with cat like reflexes and all... you actually start to believe in that whole nine lives thing, which leads to puttin' the doc off for one more day, which leads to not hearing shyte.
Which reminds me... did you hear about our BUY ONE GET ONE FREE deal on my most favoritist tires, Continental GP5000s?

NEVER PAY FOR YOU CYCLING GEAR AGAIN
WHEN JEFF WAS A SUPER-COOL SENIOR 3 and I was a super-lame Senior 4 (these were the olden days before Categories and 5s), I could only look on in shy, humiliating admiration.
When he saw my calf he shook his head and said...

That's Jeff. Always teaching.
These days, between racing and adventures, he dominates the wire bending scene in Park City.

MIDDLE AGE MAN RECRUITED TO RIDE FOR BORAH
PETER SAGAN HAS A NEW TEAMMATE, it's California legend T.O.D.
When asked by GCN why he had to have the aging racer on the team Peto was quick to respond...
Why not? He's fast for his age. He's claimed numerous KOMs in his weight class. And, he's a hell of a lot of fun to be around.
Pressed on why those were winning qualities team owner Ralph Denk was very frank...
Look, we don't count on him winning anything but we just like him. He works hard, sweats a lot, and eats pretty good most of the time. We think he'll be a huge inspiration to the younger guys on the team.
GCN cornered The Old Diesel. just after he was the last guy to come off the winning break of the local group ride. They probed how he felt about taking a spot away on the team from someone who might actually help the champion win a race.
I know, it's sounds crazy. But, I've been a huge fan of Sagan's since lining up to race him at Over The Hump. When he lapped me that day I knew being teammates was our destiny. Of course my wife will miss me, but she has a good TV and she'll be able to see me doing my thing. My kids are excited to, after years of living like a pro I'll finally be one. My neighbors are already asking for my autograph. And my mom, bless her heart, cried. I can't wait for the first training camp, to hang out with the guys and...
Dad... Dad... DAD! Are you listening to me?
What, huh, yeah, of course honey...
Reading The Secret Life of Walter MIddy today reminded me of the life saving balm a good day dream can be. Times when we drift off and dream of what it would feel like to be pro. To ride all day, climbing the highest mountains, professional chefs looking out for us... ah, the life of a professional bike racer. What it would it be like?
Maybe you dream of wearing the stars and stripes, of being a national champion, of representing the USA. If that's you, our Patriot Speed Jersey could be just what you're looking for.
We make them to order, right here in 'Merica.

AIN'T NO RIDING WHE-EN SHE'S GONE
SURFERGIRL SPLIT FOR HIGHER PASTURES YESTERDEE. I looked at her long-faced, swore I didn't know what I'd do with myself...
... then started planning today's ride...
'cause ain't no riding like the riding when she's gone.
Typical Friday, messages and posts... What 'er ya doin'? Did you hear about X ride? etc
I wanted to say yes to all of 'em, being all pent up with my self-imposed, weakly regulated offthebike rest week.
I committed to meetin' the fellas by the harbor and heading up the coast to connect with the newly resurrected Food Park group ride. Shamed PViddy into joining us - I'm not in shape - I know, that's why you should come - I'm gonna get dropped - I know, it'll be fun.
Our little posse met up with the group.
Lotsa good feelings, guys come from all parts to do the ride and we hadn't seen each other since it's summer demise - another topic.
Cheyne, how far you going?
Gonna do a hundy.
So, of course I thought I'd do the same.
We peeled off from the group. Then went our separate ways.
I stopped for an apple danish at Hidden House, ran into Dylan and Mike and Alessandro.
65 miles in, 35 to go. What's a bachelor to do?
Then tragedy struck at mile 90.
Ugh.
Sliced sidewall.
I popped off my Mini-RaceDay bag, ready for a quick fix.
Oooops!
No nozzle for my cartridge... I then remembered I'd loaned it to a buddy on a ride and forgotten to repo it. Rats!
Luckily, I have a million friends - fact - who ride.
Called one... I moved.
Called two... no answer.
Called three... I'm out, but wife is home.

I LOVE VIRGINS
MY STOMACH HURT, 'couldn't stop laughing.
It all started with Uncle Todd, I signed up for a triathlon.
When?
Sunday.
Well, awesome... let's get you hooked up.
It's hard to remember how incredibly foreign a bike can be. We all rode bikes as kids... but, you pick up a pro-level bike for the first time and it might as well be a NASA spec'd interplanetary rover.
This is a very smart, hard working young man.
Clueless.
Have you ridden it?
Yeah, Uncle Todd. I have a lot more respect for road bikers. (just wait, kiddo)
K, how about the gears... do you understand how to shift?
Not really.
So we throw it in the bike stand and play around with the shifting.
Small in back, hard. Small in front, easy.
He nods. I have complete faith by the end of 25 miles he'll have it dialed, but oh man... those first 10 are gonna be rough.
Let's get you in a kit.
The nut crunchers?
You'll be fine... now Wyatt, this is my prized speed suit. We sell these for over $200.
Oh, okay I don't need that.
Yes you do... I'm telling you that so you have confidence that this is the very best money can buy... now go put it on.
Ok.
No undies, go commando.
He changes... comes out... now, in all fairness he is an outstanding surfer and wetsuits have the zipper in the back... he comes out with... you guessed it... THE ZIPPER IN BACK! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I'm dying.
He starts laughing, can't help it.
What?!
Hahahaha.....hahahaha...
Bro.... hahaha.... it's .... on..... BACKWARDS!!!!
Back in the bathroom, and out.
You look great. How's it feel.
Amazing. When do I put it on?
First thing, under your wetsuit. Then on the bike...
... do I run in it?
Absolutely?
For real?
Yes, my buddy Joby just PR'd Kona in that exact speed suit.
He smiles.
Me too... can't wait to go watch him Sunday.
I wore that very suit to a number of surprising road victories this year. If you want to check it out here's the link:

SOUL RIDING AND BAD GIRLFRIENDS
NOTHING IS WORSE THAN A BAD GIRLFRIEND (ladies just insert boyfriend for ease - not that your easy, that I'm too lazy to switch back and forth and I know your too hip to care).
I would surf every day if surfing wasn't such a lousy lover. I never know what I'm gonna get. Is it going to be pumping? flat? empty? crowded? ? ? ? ?
Which reminds me how silly I think surf contests are, surfing is art, and my favorite surfers are soul surfers... surfing for love and spirit.
Most mountain bikers around here are surfers.
You know why now, right?
Because surfing is so dawgawn fickle. Ugh!
But the bike... the bike... she so lovely.
She a great lover.
Always ready to go, to rip or flow.
She don't care, she just wants to go.
And these surfing mountain bikers aren't into the competition thingy.
They are soul riders.
No hurry to climb.
No computer to obey.
Getting high, while riding high.
Chasing it with adrenalin, while chasing each other down.
That's soul riding.
No agenda.
Time to ditch the Garmin, bro.

THE BIKE BENEATH MY LEGS
FOUR DAYS IN TO MY SELF-IMPOSED BIKE FAST, and things are miserable.
My legs ache.
My energy is terrible.
My whole system is off.
Withdrawals!, some might say.
Well, I agree.
I don't know how folks who neglect their health do it.
How do they keep going day after day, all work and no play?
I'm already tipping the scales higher than I've been in a year.
... and I'm wondering, what is the point of the (no) exercise?
I need to get out and feel the sun on my face, hear the wind, feel some tension in my musckulls (Pop-eye!)
All I wanna do is ride my bike fast!
Which brings me to my favorite Bruce Lee quote:
Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.
I'm pretty sure I'll be breaking the fast in the morning. My legs have felt like $#*^ since the Filthy 50 on Saturday. I don't remember a recovery ever taking this long and I think it has to do with the lethargy. This body of mine needs to stay in motion.
Lesson learned.

WELL, I HAVEN'T MADE THAT MISTAKE YET
YOU KNOW I TRY AND SHARE EVERY MISTAKE I MAKE OR ALMOST MAKE in the hopes my friends can avoid them. But, this one is a new one... and, well, I guess I'm glad it happened.
Todd, you're not going to believe this.
When I hear this I always take stock of the teller... sometimes I think Oh, I'm going to believe this and others the opposite.
In this case, when a cat goes by the handle of "Crazy" on the Stravas... well, I'm probably going to believe it and love it.
Especially, double-especially, when it happens after the awesome and feared TMWC!... 'cause, honestly, who can get anything useful done after that social ride?!
Anyway, what you really want to avoid is this...
Someone stoke my kit.
What?
Yeah, I always hustle into work after the ride and leave my kit to dry on the back of the car.
Hmmm... I mean that's totally normal, right?... so it's not the mistake you and I should avoid.
And someone stole it?
Yep.
That's terrible! (which it actually is, good kits ain't cheap)
So Crazy comes on down to hang out at PEDALindustries HQ and pick up some new gear. We spend a good bit rehashing the ride I missed, the upcoming weekend rides, and other riveting news only we can lose ourselves in.
Another mistake I've learned to avoid is that of shoeing people I enjoy out of my life because I've got to grind - we all need to hangout and connect more.
Crazy heads on home, saving a bundle by picking up brand new closeout gear.
Here's the mistake you don't want to make, but probably are going to make or already have made.
Found my TMWC kit.
Where?
At home. I raced back home to get a student a belt and forgot I had dropped them off. Tuesdays my brain is just useless after 8am!
haha... SO. IS. MINE!
Remember kids, we're stupider than we think we are after a beat down/social ride... and no matter what, how things go down in our memory are almost a lock to be different than what actually happens.
Just in case it happens to you, https://pedalindustries.com/pages/close-outs

FIRST DAY OF NO RIDING - FAIL
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO BREAK YOUR PROMISE TO TAKE A WEEK OFF? Does it really matter? I mean nobody is checking, right? Sure my body is worn out...
But, when a college buddy calls and says I'm in town, let's ride!
Ya gotta go.
Though the paths we ride are thousands of miles apart, our souls are still traveling together...
... and that's a ride I'm always never gonna pass on.

NOT ACCORDING TO PLAN
I HAD PLANNED TO WRITE THIS BIG DRAMATIC END OF THE SEASON POST ABOUT THE SEASON. Then, I got home after a scorching Filthy 50 and melted into the couch. I was completely drained, vowing never to do it again.
Yesterday pretty much sums up my season. Set a giant goal, train to the point of not loving it, recover like no other, shock myself with the result, collapse in exhaustion.
24 hours later, and I feel a lot better... even starting to have fond feelings for the Filthy.
Which means if I'm really calling it a season, my collapse is going to extend for an entire week.
A week off the bike.
Do you think I'll make it?
Monday will be easy to resist - I'm pretty achey from the cramps I was fighting the last 20 miles.
Tuesday will be the last Market Ride of the year - it ends with the time change... so, I might ride.
Wednesday is pretty packed with work commitments, I should be good there.
Thursday I'm planning to surf with my brothers, which isn't really resting, but we are overdue for a board meeting.
Friday, oh Friday and it's cherished meditation/journal session... that'll be tough, maybe if I just ride really, really easy it won't count... or maybe I'll just fire up the scooter and get the journaling done.
Saturday, to try and make it impossible to ride I am thinking of camping Friday night and leaving the bikes behind.
Well, that's the plan for now.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure I'll falter... but I sure do need some rest.

I KNOW WHO I'LL BE TOMORROW.
TOMORROW WILL BE MY LAST RACE OF THE YEAR, and I know what I’m gonna do.
I’ll be that racer cracking a few nervous jokes, trying to break the tension on the starting line.
I’ll be that racer with a giant grin, cheering other riders on and high-fiving the volunteers.
I’ll be that racer going all out, giving it all I’ve got.
I’ll be that racer covered in dust, and maybe a little blood.
I’ll be that racer fighting cramps, chewing my salt tabs.
I’ll cross the finish line, gassed.
I’m gonna have so much fun!
Who are you gonna be?

IT'S HER BIRTHDAY

Do I panic I'll miss my planned DRTY WDNSDY ride? Not even.

THE ONE HOUR RULE
I HAVE A NEW RULE. Well, it's not really new but I just realized I practice it so I might as well share it with you. There are some great pros with this rule, as well as a potential major con.
Here's the rule: If I can ride my bike to "the ride" within 1 hour, I'm riding.
Why? Because by the time I load the van/car/truck, battle the traffic to get there, and unload and prep... well, probably could have ridden there nearly as fast. Right? 5-10 minutes to load up, 15-30 minute drive, 5-10 minutes to unload.
Might as well ride.
I'll get there warmed up, ready to rip.
I'll save money on gas and wear and tear.
I might meet some of the posse on the way, always good.
What's the con?
Well, for example, after today's pretty heavy 4 hour MTB ride, which it took me an hour to get to...
... I still had to ride home.

I DON'T SCARE EASY
I'M THE BRAVEST, TOUGHEST PERSON I KNOW until I'm faced with a threat. Then, I'm much for flight than fight. Tonight, long after the shadows took over, I leaped up a steep single track leaving the comfort of asphalt and street lights behind. It seemed like a good way to get back home.
My light was shining steady and bright, and I zoned out lost in my thoughts as my legs spun an easy tune. It felt so good to get away from the bustle of my daily hustle.
City behind.
Cars long gone.
Just me, my light and a dried mustard weed forest.
The moon was yet to rise. It would beam bright, eventually. But, at the moment things were quite dark.
I heard a yelp up ahead, to the left. Not a big deal.
Coyotes are shy. I see them often... in fact, I've been seeing them a lot lately. Usually alone. Occasionally, two or three. They are aren't starving, they are big and healthy.
Another yelp. This time ahead, and off to the right a bit.
At that moment, I was reminded of Justin's encounter with a coyote on the way to TMWC. It ran along side him. Unafraid. It flanked him. It should Justin up for weeks.
The next yelp was off to my left.
Were they surrounding me? I was alone. Going up hill. Breathing rather hard.
I stopped.
Whipped my rig around.
Flipped the beam to highest strength and got the heck outta dodge.
... real brave, real tough... ha!, not tonight.

YEP, I'M A TOOL.
I'M PROBABLY NOT LIKE YOU. My day job is largely spent with 20 year olds. I also put in a fair chunk of time volunteering my time serving teenagers.
When it comes to my riding posse, I usually out old most of 'em.
I'm lucky, I guess.
All this youth, constantly sharing with me how they see the world. In obvious and subtle ways the teach me.
Yesterday, I received two great lessons.
Young Luke, 13 years old/100 lbs, kept attacking and attacking on a flat and windy course. He had no business even trying against a bunch of strong adults. That's the lesson, train hard and your races are easy.
The other was from AC. Airpods firmly drilled in, attention clearly zoned out.
I asked what he was listening to.
Music.
I like music too, so I asked what.
60s-80s-90s.
I like that too. I asked top band of each decade.
Grateful Dead-Dead Kennedys-Tool.
Only knowing a fair amount about the Dead, we got down to talking.
When I got home I pulled up the Essential Tool playlist on Apple Music.

THE MID-OCTOBER FOOLERY
INVARIABLY EACH OCTOBER I FIND MYSELF DELUDED. I'm just sure I'll wrap up the day's work early. I'm positive the sun will set later than advertised. I'm banking on the shadows to creep ever so slow.
And there I am, 20 minutes from home.
In the dark.
This particular delusion is amusing, because the consequences or riding lightless could be life-changing. But, there's a certain adrenaline associated with it, It keeps me alert. More alive.
And when I make it back and open the door...
I listen...
After all these years of cheating the night successfully,
there's still a little bit of relief within the walls...
... I'm home.
And that's a buzz that never gets old.

DON'T COUNT THE CALORIES
I'M CURED. I'LL NEVER EAT ANOTHER DONUT. I'm always amused at the interactions when people find out we're spending the morning riding 100k, stopping at 10 incredible donut shops along the way.
How much weight will you gain?
Why would you eat all that junk?
... questions those who do the tour know are irrelevant. But, I'll answer them for your via my anecdotal experiences:
No weight will be gained because the appeal of sugary goodness has diminishing powers. Plus, while 100k was the quest... I rode more like 150k (80 miles 'mericans).
You eat that junk first because we skip it all season long, you eat "all" that junk because as I mentioned my sweet tooth lies 6' under at the moment.
What other benefits are gained on such a ride?
Well, the pace is tranquil and long and we all know LSD is the way to grow capillaries, right?
We end up actually learning where the best shops are and what their specials are. For example, someone told me South Swell was awful. However, I found their chocolate cronut to be amazing... always ask the server for recommendations.
But, the best is the people you meet along the way. The interwebs spread the gospel of TdD and beguiled new faces. At a minimum we enjoy the novel company, and more likely we'll ride together again.
My top 3 donuts
3. Chocolate Cronut at South Swell, Laguna Beach
2. Bacon In The Sun at Duck Donuts, Irvine (these are made to order)
1. The Smoked Apple Fritter at JD Flannels, San Juan Capistrano.

OFF THE BIKE IS GOOD TOO
ONE OF THE WEIRDER ASPECTS OF BIKE FRIENDS IS HOW UNNEIGHBORLY WE CAN BE. After hours and hours and hours riding side by side, fueling up mid-ride and helping out when things are broke... we know everything about each other. You'd think we'd get together off the bike as well.
But we don't.
I have some ideas about that:
7. We're sick of each other.
6. We don't want our worlds to collide.
5. The sig others might not gel and who could risk that?
4. It's conflicts with an unsaid cycling norm.
3. Netflix bro
2. We're not as social as we think.

HEY MAN, CAN'T YOU READ?
NEW RIDERS CAN'T READ. They get more flats, crash more, and so on. They can't see what you and I can.
It takes time.
I've been reminded of this the past couple of months by my own experience.
As I've ridden more and more technically challenging trails on my mountain bike, I've noticed my ability to judge what the bike can and can't do improving.
Each experience gets catalogued and as I see a similar challenge approach the successful solution gets burned further into my brain. The more this repeats the easier it gets.
Soon, I'm seeing the trail and quickly interpreting what to do.
It's easy.
Automatic.
I'm riding.
Not thinking.
I've learned to read, by riding.

THE BIKE MAKES THE MAN
YOUR BIKE DECIDES WHO YOU ARE, NOT YOU. Oh, you think you're in charge, but you're not. Not in a meaningful way.
Track racers don't have suspension.
MTBr's don't bring skinnys to the dirt.
Roadies have lots of gears.

RESISTANCE IS(N'T) FUTILE
THERE ARE TWO REALLY HARD ASPECTS OF A FLAT TRAINING RIDE.
I was able to overcome them because...
Gritters shamed me when I slid over after a 2 second pull.
Edwards kept attacking and giving us something to chase.
Robot bailed at the I.D. check... I love getting more hard miles in than him.
Tonight was fast... 32 miles in 1:20.
That's 23.6mph., and includes a lot of loliygagging.
We were on it, when we were on it.
Which brings up the 2 big challenges I face when using this flat ride for training:
First, the overwhelming temptation to sit 15+ riders back and sightsee. It's so nice back there. Often tame enough to chit chat. No wind in the face. Just riding hard enough to hang on.
Second, the inmyface recognition that hammering for allimworth is going to get me nowhere. That knowledge just hallows out my soul.
But, I am who I am.
I came with a plan.
To ride fast.
No matter.

LAY(ER) IT ON ME!
25 IN PARK CITY THIS MORNING, per Jeff.
47 in San Clemente this morning, per Todd.
I tell him the humidity makes it colder than it is...
... he laughs at me.
We're both laying it on pretty thick because it's time to layer up.
My ride today when from 47 to 59 inside of 12 minutes. Part of that is geographical, riding from the shaded river bed to the sun-warmed ridge tops. Part of it is just the time of year.
Layer time.
Today was just my kit and a windbreaker. That's what I like when I know the temp change is going to be rapid and drastic.
Other days I roll out with kit, vest and arm warmers. Ditching the arm warmers as thing percolate. Keeping the vest to warm my core.
Next is knee warmers with arm warmers and vest.
The most I typically need in these parts is arm and knee warmers with the windbreaker...
...unless it's in the 30's, then I'll add the vest too... 'cause humidity!

EARLY RIDERS GET THE MIST
A MISTY, BONE-CHILLING START. Chicken skin. Sixth day of an experimental, high-intensity week... Chris hits Cholla hard after squeaking I'm just gonna spin up it.
That's Chris for ya.
Stair Steps can be a shin-busting descent, but today I cleaned the whole thing... feather in helmet for me!
Now it's 8:15am, the high tide for trail users. Hikers, runners, riders. Everywhere.
Ripping Old Emerald, the rough trail scrambles my eyesight. I see a dude, TODDbrooown... (doppler effect). It's Roby McGee. I stop. He's all about Enduro on Saturdays.
Asks if we're going to Filthy 50....
Yep.
Good, let's ride together I'm sick of racing.
That sounds good.
And, it does. Today anyway. Can't make promises once the gun goes.
There's a wonderful single track down Emerald Canyon. The kind you don't really pedal and don't really brake. It is emerald. So lush. Cooler, quieter. Not lonelier. An on purpose solitariness.
The climb back up is nice, requiring a touch of nimbleness to wiggle up a couple of pitches.
Rattle Snake, has no rattlers today. No hikers. No riders. Weird. The claws of rock at the bottom take a few swipes. Knock me off, but no scratches.
Under 10 min on I Think I Can climb... new PRs, ouch.
Dropped down B.F.I knobbies clinging to pavement to gravel to dirt..... more PRs.
Smiling so hard on Lizard DH, I finally have it mostly memorized... more PRs for me...
... but not for Chris.
Chris rolled in with a dropper seat post... errr dropped seat post. He musta hit something hard. The seat tube collar split in half.
Do you want me to go back with you?
I'd like to say this was an honest question. I knew he'd say No, but would like the company. He knew I'd say OK, and would miss his company. A real friend would go back with comrade on wounded bike. A real friend would also say No, I don't want to ruin your ride.
And... that's friendship.
The rest of my ride was less enjoyable than it could have and should have been,
I got to Nix Nature Center.
Sat down.
Got up.
Filled my bottles.
Sat down.
Took time to do nothing.
Geared back up, and rode back.
Better fitness, but feeling less friendly. Kept telling myself I would have said same thing he said... knowing he would have ridden back with me.
Some days, I could do better.

COACHING 101
SHOULD YOU HAVE A CYCLING COACH? Only if you want to improve quicker, and avoid the potholes along the path to enlightenment.
How do you know a good coach from a wannabe?
Imagine a huge event, the gran fondo of a lifetime or even a national championship. Racer X is huffing and puffing, giving all there is to give...
Wannabe coach says, Try harder.
Good coach says, Drink more.
The good coach knows you and knows you're already doing all you can do... but, can see things you can't see and can give tools and advice you can implement.
Where to find a good coach?
Good coaching can be found...
In books.
On podcasts.
By riding with the local experts.
And of course you can pay for a personal coach.
In most cases, you get what you pay for.
Just remember Try harder! is not coaching.

MAGIC PILLS
SOME THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ASPIRIN... but are relevant to your bike riding habit and by understanding them may lead to increased performance.
We'll put the obvious aside. It's cheap to manufacture, about 2 cents a tablet, and largely indistinguishable from one brand to another.
But, did you know...
Well-known brands command a higher price?... and work better?
Give a person a choice between red tablets and white and they'll pick red every time... and get better results?
A person with a backache will pay a premium for aspirin with BackAche Relief on the packaging. The formulation is no different... and they'll get better results?
The placebo effect is real, so how do we harness it?
Do we pay for the big brand?
Shall we hold out for the perfect paint scheme?
Do we drink the company's marketing kool-aid?
Some will say it's a waste; some, money well spent.
Whether you think it works or you think it doesn't - your right.
- Henry Ford (I took a few liberties).
So, what do you think?

IT'S SO OBVIOUS
ON THE MARKET RIDE TONIGHT, I noticed a new guy in a local team kit. Things got heated up pretty quick and new guy put in some stinging attacks. This is why I do the ride, to get stung.
But who was this new bee?
Time and again he hit us with blistering one minute efforts, stretching the group to a long thin line. Eventually, I figured he was using the ride to do intervals... probs for the upcoming 'cross season.
But, I couldn't figure who he was. Not that I know everybody, but I know a lotta guys.
... and this guy had nats stripes on his sleeve.
I shuffled through my cards of known badass locals with nats stripes. Found a suspect. Worked my mental photoshop, removing his muy excellente mustache and shaving off about 25 lbs...
... and it hit me...
Hey, you look just like Mike McMahon except you're a lot faster!
Yeah, I'm getting back to my old self.
It's so obvious when we're in top shape, and when we're not. Bike racing shows no mercy, there's no hiding and there are no lucky days.
Put in the work.

YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT
THERE ARE A WHOLE LOT PLACES most people will never see. We, you and I, we see 'em all the time. To say You don't know what you missing is pointless because they don't. They think they do.
From their cars, they think they know their town. But, they don't. Not like we do.
We feel the sounds.
We hear the colors.
We see the beat.
We ride.

I HAD ONE TOO
TYSON FAMOUSLY CHIRPED, Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.
I had a plan today.
Then, on the second climb... after an adventurous warm up... well, a funny thing happened.
Got a shot of endorphins.
Tossed out my plan to lay low.
Dropped a few gears.
Stood up.
Cut loose.
Couldn't help it.
Felt too good.
Temps were perfect.
Pre-dawn sprinkles left hero dirt.
Scared the crap out of a trail runner. He jumped. Fell backwards. I felt bad... but bro, seriously, take the headphone out. Nature sings a better song... and maybe next time you'll hear the first, second and third friendly hellos from the old diesel. He probably had a plan, too.
I guess there was a triathlon at Chrystal Cove. One of the things I really dig about the tri scene is the newbs who show up on 20 year old road bikes to dip their toes into the sport. Saw more than one of those in the parking lot. One dude had a giant medal around his neck, and a bigger smile... atop a two-wheeled relic.
The hiking population was down about 50%, 'cause sprinkles. So was the biking population. Better shredding for me.
2ish hours in I remembered why I was gonna lay low. Sore throat, body fighting something. And I had to shut 'er down.
Worth it?
Totally.
Now... I can burn through some overdue work projects... and rest manana.

HOW MANY HOURS?
IN A TWEET THIS, JOE FRIEL PASSED ALONG SOME SAGE ADVICE FROM A COLLEAGUE OF HIS: We train 168 hours a week.
7 days X 24 hrs = 168
Right?...
There's bike time.
Eating time.
Sleeping time.
You get it.
I guess the only question is... how's the quality of our training?
Or, how's the quality of our living?
I read it after the pizza.

ONE MAN'S GRAVEL
STUTTERING ALONG THE TRAIN TRACKS, it occurred to me that this might be more than gravel. How exactly did the cycling world settle on "gravel bike" anyway?
If you think about it, we already had "cross bikes" for cyclo-cross. And what is a gravel bike but a cross bike with slacker geometry, room for slightly wider tires and a few other comfy features?
Don't we already call cars that are part sedan and part SUV crossovers?
Why didn't we just go with comfy-cross?
Because these so-called gravel bikes were invented to race on gravel roads outside the big cities?
Duh, road bikes are called road bikes.
All that proves is a supreme lack of creativity.
It just bugs me.
One, we don't have any gravel roads 'round here.
Two, it's awesome for fire roads.
Three, and single track.
Four, and curb jumping.
We could have called them adventure bikes, because you just throw a leg over and go where ever the spirits will you.
But, again, boring.
Too obvious.
If I had to pick a feeling my "gravel" bike gives me it would be freedom.
Free to ride wherever I want.
Across a field
Through town
Up the sidewalk
Along the train tracks
Bike trails
Horse trails
Hiking trails
Down stairways
On my shoulder
Over the sand
Spraying water
Bunny hopping
Skidding
But, that's not even it... the going anywhere part of freedom... it's the freedom to be creative in my route.
That's it.
Which occasionally includes a forlorn gravel road.

HOW TO LOAD YOUR RACEDAY BAG
PEDAL POSSE Ep 1: HOW TO LOAD YOUR RACEDAY BAG
Hey there Awesomeness…
I’m so stoked you got a RaceDay Bag (or considered it)...
... It's gonna change your life...
... the right bag will make you go faster because race day becomes a whole lot easier.
So, let's get started.
Watch the video or read below.
I store my bag with all the pockets unzipped, so the bag can breathe and smell fresh. When I grab it, it’s ready to load. Some of the posse store their bag with their gear ready to race.
First, put your shoes in there… and make sure you’ve got the right shoes for the bike and event. I always do this first. In fact, one of the inspirations of the bag was my second Leadville 100. Halfway to Colorado I realized I had left my shoes behind. My wife called FEDEX, but they couldn’t guarantee delivery the next day because it was a tiny, forgotten town at the time. As a back up, we bought $300 shoes in Fruita. But, they didn’t carry my brand of pedals. Phoned ahead to a shop in Aspen that carried them and arranged to have them leave a bag outside after hours. It probably looked like a drug drop. Great, big, huge hassle. Put your shoes in first and zip ‘em up.
Second, slide your helmet in the other end. It’ll go right over your shoes. If you have the PRO, add your bottles (I recommend not filling them, ya never know if the lids will leak). Zip ‘em up.
Now, look at the top of your bag. Go through our check list. You’ll notice extra space for you to Sharpie in other items. Need and ibuprofen? Write it on the pocket.
Personally, I like to do one pocket at a time.
Once you're packed, put the bag by your bike, or in the car. It’s a RaceDay bag and you wanna have it with you, right?!
Now here’s the beauty. If by chance you get 15 minutes down the road and start wondering… Gee, did I pack my glasses… in seconds, you can go to that pocket and find them.
This is peace of mind. You’ll be relaxed. You’re gonna have a great day!
So… tell us about it. Post on our FB or Insta or Strava pages. Let us know. We’re cheering for you… and ya never know, we just might send you a surprise.
Got any questions. Email me, todd@pedalindustries.com

PS -> This must be what it feels like to dope... there's no way I'd show up to race without PR Lotion, it's that good. Promise.
From the first time you use it, you'll know...
You'll be saying things like, It's super weird, I've never felt better.
For short races, apply before.
For epic rides and races double up. Put on when you rise, then apply again before you head out.
I don't use it for training rides because I'm afraid it'll make me ride too hard.
Buy PR Lotion here, shipping is FREE.
I won't tell if you use it to steal KOM's....
K, that's it for now.
WHAT'S YOUR BUDGET?
I HAVE A VERY, VERY STRICT BUDGET FOR INVESTING IN NEW BICYCLES. It's really simple. Anybody can use it successfully and have a lifetime of two-wheeled joy.
Here it is...
Zero or Outrageous.
If it's an okay bike, if I'm not dreaming about it, if I think it's gonna be anything short of blow my bibs off awesome... I got no interest.
If it's got all the latest and greatest, if it promises to make me super hero, if it's insanely rare, if it calls to me evening and night... now that's something to pry the inner-tube wallet open.
So my dear purveyor of bikes, show me the best... after all, friends don't let friends ride junk.
... and yes, more and more, I find that same formula works for any purchase.
(That's my buddy Craig's drool-worthy 80's resto with original chrome rims and super-trick 11 speed cassette upgrade)

TMWC: A vs. B
WE'VE WORKED REALLY HARD TO BUILD THE BEST GROUP RIDE AROUND. Part of building the ride is reminding riders new and old of the ground rules. It's been a little more complicated since we split the group in two.
The B group leaves at our traditional 630am start time, from Las Flores Elementary School.
The A group leaves 5 minutes later.
The B group is a steady tempo ride with a regroup... the regroup is simple, we wait until we can't see anybody else coming. If we see 'em, we wait.
The A group is blistering, waits for no one and has a little extra credit climb.
Classy B group riders who are feeling spunky can hit the A loop's extra credit, launching their acceleration after the Alicia intersection, and still wait at the regroup. Launching earlier is... nasty... not waiting at regroup, not classy.
Classy B group riders keep it together until Cook's Corner, then proceed at their own pace. Launching earlier is... nasty.
If you're feeling spunky and nasty, ride the A group.
If you're down for a nice tempo, the B's for you.

OUTSIDE THE WIRE
AT APPROXIMATELY 11AM SAID RIDER EXITED THE DESIGNATED AREA. Yep, I did that. Didn't cut the wire, just hellaglad it'd been done because the alternative was a steep, unrideable, rocky sketch... destination unknown.
5 feet away, the lovely and entreating Laguna Canyon highway opened her arms.
We make decisions every day to ride inside or outside the wire.
Some of us cut the wire.
Others slip through an opening.
A few lead.
Many follow.
How, When, What don't matter nearly as much as Who and Why.

BIKE IS THE DRUG THAT I'M THINKING OF
IT'S FRIDAY AND I'M FRIED. It ain't easy being awesome. Am I right? Cranking out great work takes time, energy and love. If you do that, then you know what I'm talking about.
Sometimes, the only thing that keeps me hanging on is the scent of an epic weekend ride.
...'you pickin' up what I'm puttin' down?...
... can I please get an Amen!?...
But it's worth it, putting in the effort. At least. I hope your work is worth it.
This morning, the old Roxy Music song popped into my head... Love is the drug that I'm thinking of.
I pulled up Apple's take on Roxy's essential songs and I had an Oh Yeah! moment.
Their older songs, like a lot of great and less-than-great groups, sound like their influences. In this case, the Beatles. As time went on, they developed a vibe of their own.
Which brings me to my Oh Yeah!... the more time, energy and love we put into our work the more original we get and the better our work. There are definitely some flops along the way. Just keep striving for the hits.
Yeah, I know my bike rides are self-medication and I'm totally down with it.
How 'bout you?

IT'S A SMALL RING AFTERALL
NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY, I can't leave it in the small ring. Even on a pancake flat ride, with goalometer pegged to easy... eventually... out of habit?... my chain magically jumps to big.
Take tonight, on the heels of the heinous Hardman Classic followed by a peppy Market Ride and chased by an attempt at tempo but turned let's do this! glorious mtb sesh...
...you'd think...
... right?...
You'd think, No prob. . You'd think i'd just roll along. Sure I'd run all over that rear cassette (why do we say rear, when there's only one place it could be?).
But no.
A whiff of tailwind, a -.5% grade, and I was in the big.
Is it just me?
Am I the only one with zero ability to resist the lusty call of the big ring?
It's just a small ring after all... who needs it?
