WHEN TRAINING ISN'T ACCORDING TO PLAN
THE BEST LAID PLANS can go sideways for a variety of reasons. I'm not gonna list 'em since I don't want to poison your mind and have you...
... manifesting awfulness.
'Cause I'm questioning just that about myself.
Did I manifest...
- 3 days off at I Do Epic
- riding with friends short on time
- puking my guts out last night after a miserable 70 minute ride
... or, is it just life?
Doesn't matter too much,
except part of my GrandMasterRipOnRaceDay plan...
... was a massive training week this week to make up for last week
and leave me slightly buried for BWR next week.
I consulted AI all night...
- possibly caused by using pure table sugar on my rides
- hydration via room temp peppermint tea
- a few Tums
... while Surfergirl laughed at me and secured the remedy.
Arose after 10 hours, feeling a lot better.
Energy seems good enough to day...
... to meet up with the local slayers.
The prudent thing would be to skip the meet up,
spin at most, or sleep...
... a proper adjustment.
But, screw it...
... I've got plans, too.

HE'S A GENIUS
WE ALL HAVE, or should have, wish we had, that friend who can fix anything. Even though we've upped our skills over the years there's always that...
... next level repair.
We can't do it.
Like my SID fork, today...
- packing in on descents
- rebound slower than a sloth
- adjustment dials backing out and loose
... I was in a bind.
Turns out the great C Gonzer lives where I'm visiting,
racing pals from a decade ago.
Within about about 20 minutes,
he had it working nearly good as new.
How'd you learn how to do this?
I just really like working on my bikes.
That's it?
Well, I am a mechanical engineer by trade.
That's it...
- love what we do
- study the basics
- achieve mastery
... genius level work.

GETTING HIGH
TRAINING AT SEA LEVEL is no way to prepare for high elevation activities. Sure we have extra oxygen to go hard, which is always nice. But, it'd be even nicer...
... to be able to rip when high.
Which begs the question...
... why am I working so darn hard, putting out so little power?
Nah, that's obvious.
Kinda.
90 minutes into the ride today,
we'd been ripping up Big Mountain Pass (f'real).
Challenging?
Yes.
Wheezing?
Yes.
Gapped?
Indeed.
Here's the rill dill...
... even though the power is relatively low,
the breathing is labored.
Which presents a realhonesttogoodness truth...
- breathing too hard
- not thinking 100% clearly
- focusing on staying on pace
... it's hard to stay on top of the hydration and nutrition at altitude significantly above our normal.
We, me especially, gotta force it.
Another important consideration at high elevations...
... it's better to pace on HR than PWR.

SETTLING...
THE IDEA OF SETTLING, for most of us, is repulsive. We'd never do that because our standards are too high...
... or, so we think.
Because we don't know better.
Welp,
today I realized
I've totally been settling.
While we do have trails to ride near home...
- skinny single track with rain ruts
- weeds elbow high
- punch climbs
... it's nothing like Utah..
Today, outside of Kamas was incredible.
My pals, PViddy and TimmyV, had been telling me it was great up here.
But, c'mon...
- smooth, fast and flowy
- adorned with greenery and trees
- berms so perfect the suspension compresses as you no-brake it
... expertly engineered trials.
Waywaywaywayway better than my home trails.
Once we know we're settling the only question is...
... what are we gonna do about it?

A GOOD BREAK
TAKING TIME OFF can be restorative. Sometimes it's on purpose, other times its an unplanned forced situation. Either way...
... we're anxious to get back at it.
Like right now.
Being that I was committed to be all in at the biz conference...
... I skipped the last few days.
Including the typical epic Saturday.
Everything feels really good except my gut, which is feeling quite bloated...
... after lots of good food.
I suppose that's part of the anxiety, not...
- the drop in fitness
- the packed on pounds
- the connecting with the crew
... the sensation of being a caged animal.
Some might caution,
don't over do it.
A fair warning if working back from an injury.
But, this belly is yellin' at me,
get after it,
right now.
Can't wait to start shedding and shredding manana.

AI DRIVEN?
AI could be all it's cracked up to be, if we can only learn how to use it to our benefit. But, new things can be...
... a challenge to learn.
Even scary.
One of the take aways on day 3 of I Do Epic was regarding AI,
and it got me thinking about racing...
... because as we say, Racing is life!.
My grand takeaway is AI's ability to deliver what we are looking for has much to do with regarding the prompts.
For example, knowing what you know about me...
... create a training program as if you were Javier Sola
Just like us at a race,
AI needs its head screwed on straight in order to deliver.
And a proper prompt is the starting point.
Making it human...
... what is the main prompt driving our training?

WE CALL IT SPOOKED
THE UNMISTAKABLE ENERGY of the start line can be overwhelming for the uninitiated. We feel it the moment we arrive at an event, and when we line up the vibe can take us...
... from confident and courageous to literal shaking.
Plans melting.
Rather than the controlled missile launch we'd imagined, we are overcome by the complete chaos of undirected explosions.
And, that's okay,
until we want a different outcome.
On Day 2 of I Do Epic, we spent much the day in a massive barn learning how a master horse trainer teaches and guides the beasts with energy vs force.
Demonstrating the animal's sensitivity to each other in the herd as well as to us humans, as we approached and worked with the horses.
Thankfully, the inanimate endurance tools we depend on...
- bicycles
- helmets
- shoes
... cannot sense our moods or energy.
Can you imagine mounting a spooked bicycle?
I've often wondered how I am able to reach a place of calm and certainty with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of my "closest friends"...
... so close to losing it?
I don't have a good answer other than...
- a safe race
- an unleashing of the training put in
- finishing knowing there was nothing left in the tank
... experience and expectation.
But, the old cowboy did share one nugget that really resonated with me...
... We create what we anticipate.

START WHERE YOU ARE
TRAVEL BRINGS IT'S OWN CHALLENGES when it comes to maintaining our fitness. Will we have time, will there be space, do we have the equipment...
... will we even want to?
Have the energy?
When I signed up for I Do Epic Live in the hinterlands of Idaho, I figured we'd be starting early and ending late so...
- 27 hours
- 380 miles
- 27000' of vert
... I made sure I'd put in a large training block prior.
Taking a break made sense, but...
... a funny thing happened when I woke up.
I had two and half hours to kill,
while situated on the shore of the Snake river,
with a lovely and lonely gravel road echoing my vibe.
My original plan was out...
- a long walk
- a ton of push ups
- a million air squats
... a quick and glorious spin was in.

I WANTED TO STOP SO BAD
GETTING AFTER IT for a long period of time can be a beautiful thing, if we are in the right mindset and our bodies are prepared...
... and we're used to it.
Even addicting.
But, if our head's not into it,
our bodies not prepped,
it's been a while...
... quitting looks might tasty.
Like today.
There we were, riding up one of the most beautiful climbs in Utah, the Alpine Loop...
- few cars on the road
- perfect spring weather
- forever views up into the snowpack
... a coupla dudes riding a good fast tempo.
And, about 45 minutes in...
... I wanted to pull over.
Have a smoke, errr bite of my bar,
dip my toes in the stream.
It would have been so easy,
and lovely.
Which is why I didn't do it.
Because I know from experience pushing through these moments is...
... what it takes to finish anything strong.
Well, and the reward of a chocolate chip cookie at Sundance...
... would be that much sweeter.

THE OTHER CROSSTRAINING
IF WE'RE IN A RELATIONSHIP of any kind we're most likely going to be exposed to activities which don't perfectly align with...
... our primary objective.
Got it?
Yeah, we get it.
The thingaboutitis...
... it's usually more than okay.
Surfergirl loves to hike.
Any time we're roadtripping and I'm in a hurry to get to the beddown...
... she's plotting a once in a life time hike.
Like today,
just after 6pm
3 hours from our destination...
... we absolutely had to hike Kolob canyon for no less than 2 hours!
Yes, that's an explanation point because...
... old diesels need their beauty sleep
Her "reward" for this detour is me stretching out while she drives, which I'm pretty sure...
... she purposely fakes like she's tired and unnecessarily jerks the wheel so I'll get behind it.
While I have to admit the hike was outstanding, and served to remind me that I should do some regular hiking to prepare for the potential to be hiking at Leadville...
...it's pretty clear I have not properly trained her on driving in a relaxing and soothing manner nor bowing down to the needs of her old man's sleep.

BECAUSE I ASKED...
MEMORIAL DAY IS A BUSY ONE around here. All kinds of people out enjoying the day: runnin, bikin, swimmin, surfin, paddlin...
... things were chaotic.
I got a late start.
Preferring to get some work knocked and start prepping the van for our road trip...
... I slipped out just past noon.
There is a steep hill above a picturesque beach that attracts locals, nonlocals and everyone in between.
At the top, I saw an older woman lugging two chairs for her and her ancient father.
Normally, I'd just wiggle around them and the rest and go on about my day...
... but I remembered.
Hi there, can I help you with those chairs?
Oh, yes, please.
Leaned my bike on a palm tree.
Let's go down a little bit more, where it's a little flatter.
C'mon dad, over here.
This looks pretty good.
Thank you.
No problem.
How did you know we needed help, nobody else noticed?
Oh, I prayed I'd be useful today.
With that, I was off on a lovely tour of the southern part of our county...
... pavement, gravel roads and single track.
You're probably thinking Nice virtue signal Todd...
... to which I'll say, thinking of others is not my default or my strong suit.
I have to work at getting my heart to be fully functional.

THE RANDOMNESS OF PROGRESS
NICHING DOWN is a legit way to go about maximizing results. We study the experts, learn all we can, put it into practice. The goal is...
... supreme mastery.
But, is narrow and deep the only way to get it done?
The best way?
Personally, I think I've learned more studying endurance athletes and coaches from other sports than I have focusing on bike racing.
Maybe, probably, there is more literature and research available.
Here are a few of my favorites
- running - Born To Run, Christopher McDougall
- triathlon - anything by Phil Maffetone
- swimming - Total Immersion Method, Terry Laughlin
- natural fitness - Natural Born Heroes, Christopher McDougall
... because they introduced me to new ways of thinking about endurance and fitness.
Bringing in randomness to our experience...
- events
- people
- travel
... can deliver game-changing progress hacks.
If we'll just open our ears, eyes, hearts.

AFTER TAKING SEVERAL READINGS
SIMULATING OUR 'A' EVENTS months in advance can be quite revealing, in bad...
... and good ways.
Once, isn't enough.
Every weekend is too much.
It's not a damned if we do,
damned if we don't situation.
More like a...
- damn?
- damn!
- hot damn!
... outcome.
With that in mind I turned to Grok to help me assess today's simulation because...
- what happens if I cut ballast?
- what workouts would improve my time?
- are there supplements that aid lung function at altitude?
... AI is damn fine when it comes to crunching numbers.

Because I'm a true and proud supernerd...
- 2 previous attempts in last 7 years
- body weight on those days
- power numbers as well
... I have the data, going back years.
I put Grok to work...
- I can improve
- I'm in a pretty good place already
- This is gonna be a heckuva lotta fun
... and came out with what I already sensed.
Grok thinks I can beat my previous PR,
which seems absolutely ludicrous...
... mainly because I have a lot of higher value things I want to accomplish this summer.
This is a typical use of AI for me...
- confirm/test/explore what's possible
- learn how to do things I can't figure out
- assist in leveraging my tiny helmet covered bean's processing power
... are you using AI to evaluate and make moves?
As the great Wille Nelson sings...
... After taking several readings I'm surprised to find my mind's (and body) still fairly sound.

IT'S A LONE WOLF'S WORLD
NO MATTER HOW MANY friends are planning to do the A event with us, regardless of how many weekends we link up to train together...
... the bulk of our efforts are alone.
Unseen.
By nearly everybody, except that neighbor who we pass by at the same...
... godforbidden time each dark morning.
We're on the hunt...
- miles
- skills
- fortitude
... for more.
And even when we do link up, if we're truly committed...
... we might breakup, or off.
For example, I'm committed to ride a spritely tempo between all the worthy climbs tomorrow...
... where I'll move into the bottom to mid-threshold.
Because that's gonna be my pace at the A race,
and I've really got to train it now,
to maintain it then.
So, yeah, 7 miles up the climb I'll probably be alone...
... just like I'll most likely be on raceday.
Which is why I'm working on this jersey to where in in Leadville.

Personally, I feel like an inspirational, personalized jersey is good for...
... a 1-2% increase in performance.
If you're of the same persuasion...

13 WEEKS SHOULD BE ENOUGH
AT SOME POINT, the training for the A event has gotta get real. Sure we have our base miles just because we are base-ically addicted, but...

STRETCH GOALS
STRETCHING seems to go in and out of popularity. When, how long, which moves are a essential...
... and that's not counting yoga and pilates.
Where to start?
That's a good question.
I'm no expert, which is why I check in with my physical therapy pal, Scott, from time to time.
Mostly when I'm miserable
or injured.
Which got me thinking.
The last couple of days my bike fit felt like it had changed...
... which is impossible, right?
Then, I thought...
... could my body have changed somehow?
Thinking back on my many visits with Scott...
... and how stretches had fixed various aches and debilitating pains.
It hit me like a ton of lycra!
I haven't been stretching regularly,
at all.
Got back at it this morning...
... dang, I'm stiff!
But, guess what...
... the bike fit felt back to awesome.
Stretch goals are the kind that have us reaching to our limits to accomplish what seems nigh impossible...
... I like setting those.
New/old stretch goal...
... stretch every night as part of my shutdown sequence.

FROM FLOOR TO CEILING
BUILDING FITNESS can appear to be a mystery to the uninitiated. For the reasons, holding onto it is illusive. And losing it...
... downright easy.
It's a shame.
If the unwashed simply established a floor...
- a minimum daily commitment
- built over weeks
- and months
... they'd find their ceiling to be nearly limitless.
Instead, they get the bug or come clean with their naked selves...
... and progress rapidly for a short season.
Get thrown off track,
and start over.
We know different.
Our floor maybe is simple as getting outta bed and kitting up...
... knowing it's easy to get out the front door at that point.
After that, it's just a matter of raising the floor...
... to see how high we can fly.
Things I think about while riding zone two for 2 hours...
... because that was my floor today.
And, I always ride on Mondays.

PRISONS WE CHOOSE TO LIVE INSIDE

HOW FAR SHOULD WE TAKE OUR BRO-SCIENCE?
ONCE WE FIGURE OUT the gear and products that work for our bodies, it's, honestly, just amazing. It fits. It works. And we stick with it...
... because we rip.
Easy.
We don't want to change.
That can be a problem if what we love goes out of stock or worse...
... out of production all together.
A few years back, when Wahoo acquired Speedplay they dumped my tried and MTB pedals.
The Frogs.
Had I known, I'd have purchased at least 10 pair of pedals and probably 100 sets of cleats.
To my horror, I logged on and learned the sadsad news.
No mas.
When I woke and realized I was out of my favorite carb mix today...
- water
- plain ol' sugar
- and Liquid IV for flavor and electrolytes
... well, yeah, I took a stab a making my own.
You should witnessed the...
- disgust
- concern
- warnings
... from the crew when we stopped to refill our bottles midride.
I shared my mix was 4 tablespoons of sugar...
- you're gonna get diabetes
- go into a coma
- die early
... I could only laugh.
Just what exactly do you think is in your favorite powder or gel?
I got the idea from an ultra-trail runner I follow on YouTube.
He'd wanted to experiment and discovered how sucrose...
- quickly absorbed glucose
- more slowly absorbed fructose
... breaks down in the small intestine.
It's a 1:1 ration,
most high end mixes are 1:.8.
Ever look at the ingredients of what you're drinking?
My 4 very level tablespoons = 50 grams of carbohydrate.
But, isn't that gonna kill ya?
It's about the same as a can of Coke,
or a couple of candy bars.
So, yes, it will absolutely...
- crush our health
- give us that orange with 4 toothpicks look
- and lead to all kinds of degenerative diseases
... unless we are ripping and burning it up.
That 50 grams is about 50% of what I consume per hour...
... when getting after it.
How'd it work over 3 bottles?
Flawlessly.
Gonna test full strength this week.
This is bro-science...
... so take it with a literal and proverbial grain of salt.

FIRST (TASTE OF) BLOOD
WE'RE LIKE WILD ANIMALS. Once we get the first taste of adrenalin, charging through the countryside...
... with reckless abandon.
We're hooked.
The thingaboutitis...
... we gotta get that first taste.
16 years ago, my pal Dr. Jeff couldn't keep from...

About gravel riding.
You would love it.
Seems kinda lame.
Trust me.
Tell me why.
Well, it'a a combination of two things you love: road and mtb.
And it's fun?
Oh yes!
It took me 5 years to finally see a signal...
- steel
- heavy
- leather bags
... a lonely gravel bike on sale at the local bike shop.
I thought it was radical to ride the tires at such low pressure...
- 38mm
- 60 lbs
- with tubes
... now I'm on tubeless carbon hoops, rolling 18 up front 20 in the back.
So much has improved!
For the first year or more I rode gravel alone...
... like a lunatic in the wild.
It took 5 more years till a few of us were getting together...
... and another 3ish to do what we did today.
Ruckus URBN GRVL group rides.
In town for the weekend, Jeff joined us for today's masterpiece...
... I'm not sure he made the connection on the impact he's had on us.

STOP BEING MEDIUM
THERE'S A REASON so many of us struggle to improve. Especially the newest of us...
... doing all we can to hang on.
Never improving.
I heard it said so well and succinctly today by one of my fave running coaches, the great Fred Duncan.
The question how much work we can survive in one session, it's...
- hard
- easy
- hard, again
... how many high quality outputs can we stack over weeks and months and years?
If we aren't resting, active-recovering we can't go hard enough on our hard days to see any improvement...
... we become really excellent at medium.
And, stay there.
Which is fine, if you're into that sorta thing.
But, I know you're not.
Which brings up today's ride...
- 23 miles
- ave HR 93
- ave PWR 102
... we did the impossible.
I say impossible because it's nearly impossible to get a group of athletes together and not start pushing...
... we pulled it off by setting the tone ahead of time.
The BRO ride is a super easy conversational cruiser...
... because bros need bro time.
Before slaying it on the weekend.

ZONE TWO MUCH
ANYBODY CAN RIDE ZONE 2. It's easy. Zone 1 is easy. Coasting is easier. The trick is...
... to stay there.
For a long time.
The past few months I've been doing my Z2 on the mountain bike,
on kinda steep trails.
Not spinning,
a lot of torque...
... then completely off when descending.
Which is somewhat easier than what I did today...
- keeping on the pedals
- with high cadence
- limited coasting
... Zone 2 on mainly flat, with a few rollers.
Turns out 2:80 spend doing...
- 90 minutes Z2
- 31 min Z1
- 9 min z3
... is it's own kinda hard.
1261 calories burned ain't nothing.
The mental game to stay at a given pace and basically never stop pedaling...
... regardless of the terrain.
I know you zwifties are wanting to mock me,
and I'm totally down with how much harder
it can be on a trainer.
I get it.
The real point is this kind of training...
... is extremely effective at building physical and mental endurance.

THE EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER OF MID-WEEK RACING
MID-WEEK RACING has been around for ages and continues to endure because it's great training, fun to bring the community together...
... and get in some ripping intensity.
400 showed up to race Over The Hump last night.
A very healthy number of age group competitors...
... ready to battle.
I've missed the last two seasons,
so it was exciting to finally make it out.
I entered Elite 45+ looking to see how I'd rate.
Warming up,
I saw a lot of friends.
But, I was missing one.
My pal Eric was senselessly killed last year while riding his bike early in the morning, by a druggy.
After a decade of racing together...
- bro hugging each week
- seeing his babies grow up
- and turn into fine little racers
... there was a hole in my heart.
On the start line,
the energy was high,
the confidence eager.
We shot out.
I maneuvered leading into the first single track,
thinking okay this feels right.
There was only one solid climb,
20 minutes of redlining.
From leading,
to wheezing,
to 7th.
Ouch!
The downhill was a couple of miles long,
and it felt good - even PRd it.
Sliding out onto the double track,
I could see 5th and 6th,
and closed the gap.
Two of the three of us were pulling hard back to the finish line.
Just as we're about to hit the final single track before the finish,
we're caught by some of the guys we'd dropped.
At the same time,
we enter the tight turns we merge with the Beginners and Sport racers.
It's not pretty.
Some of us give the slower riders space,
others mob through.
I go from 5th to 8th.
Frustrated.
Upset about getting beat by the dude who wasn't pulling with us.
Finishing,
I stormed off.
Not my finest moment.
After a recovery drink and some spinning...
- reveling in my anger
- knowing it would motivate me
- looking forward to some specific training
... I realized how great it is to be racing.
Once I'd changed into my tshirt and jeans, I had time to reflect...
- we live in a free and prosperous country
- have the time and energy for mid-week racing
- I'm feeling 100% recovered from my TBI, while Eric is riding in the heavens and his family navigates life without him.
... and be extremely grateful.

CONSISTENCY IS BORING AND...
THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF CHATTER on the interwebs regarding what happens by simply being consistent. What is often left out is the biggest battle...
... which must be won.
Boredom.
That's what the naysayers are thinking as we head out into the morning sunrise doing the unfathomable.
Sure, it can be monotonous to do the same workout over and over.
But, we aren't newbs or drones and know how to counter that by mixing it up, and socializing with likeminded beasts.
With unholy motivation we focus...
... on the rewards.
Months and years later,
we're nothing like the person we started out as.
Consistency might look boring to an outsider, but...
... we know it's lethal.

DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS
THERE'S DANGER just crossing the street. But, people do it and a lot more because it's part of life. We, on the other hand...
... like to raise the stakes.
Ignoring the warnings.
For years, I have casually read the signs regarding mountain lions and rattle snakes on our local trails and all over the western US.
In the process I've...
- a close up encounter with a big cat
- run over many sunbathing snakes
- stared down coyotes
... had one real scare and many thrills.
The cat was the most shocking.
I thought I was seeing a large loping coyote way up the gravel road.
Not uncommon.
Keep going.
Kept seeing as elevation changed.
Rounded a corner only to see a giant cat perpendicular to the road.
Staring at me.
Didn't do what you're supposed to do...
- stand your ground
- make yourself look bigger
... back pedaled and ripped up a single track, braking to make the turn at the top.
Went back to that spot many, many times,
raced up that hill as fast as possible...
... never came close to needing to brake to make the turn at the top.
That my friends is living.

TIMING
TIMING IS EVERYTHING, and there is so much to be timed when it comes to racing. To time anything to perfection necessitates...
... starting very early.
Ultimately, requiring less energy.
We saw this today at the Giro.
The winning sprinter producing fewer watts than 2nd or 3rd place...
- 1480w
- 1870w
- 1580w
... making it look easy(er).
Because he timed his acceleration perfectly.
Not unlike sprinting for the line, the great Scott Adams stated...
... the secret to success is energy management.
Which helped me lean into doing my best and most important work early in the day when I'm most alert and creative.
What else...
- workouts
- relationships
- spiritual exploits
... can we improve with better timing?

BLAME IT ON THE DONUT
STAYING ON TOP OF THE RECOVERY is super easy to skip. Especially, if we are really on top of it...
... day after day.
We're rested.
When the opportunity presents itself to overdo it...
... we do it.
We think we'll be fine.
We aren't going to do die, but...
... we will be less than fine.
Like today.
After shortchanging myself on sleep two nights in a row,
getting talked into more than easy spinning,
skipping the hyper-ice sessions...
... all variables I couldashoulda controlled,
I suffered today.
The sting of ripping,
felt stale and suffocating.
When looked back on the data...
- on trails I've ridden
- raced up
- stomped
... I actually set some PRs.
The difference when between being fatigued vs fresh is stark...
... longfaced-droopy vs JUBILANT.
Eventually, I succumbed to the efforts,
pulling the plug halfway up a steepytechy...
... and limped to the donut shop.
Where, after a few moments and calories and water I miraculously...
... felt very fauxfresh!

BRO!
ALL RACING AND TRAINING ain't the way to do it. The ubersuccessful connect with others on a deeper level, it's the glue we need...
... to help us hold it all together.
Not the training and racing.
Life.
Some say getting out and getting after is...
... cheap therapy.
I won't argue with that.
Getting out, and away, for a conversational workout...
... can be life changing.
Lifesaving.
But, we already know that.
Most of our friends don't,
or don't make the time,
or have the friendship.
Which got me out on the road way earlier than I wanted to today,
because I knew my pal had been traveling a ton,
and could squeeze in a ride.
And got me thinking...
- early start
- easy terrain
- all bikes welcome
... why not create a BRO ride?

BEST EFFORTS OSCILLATE
DOING OUR BEST. We hear from the time we take our first steps, through our teens, into adulthood. Then we preach it...
... to anyone who will listen.
Because it works.
As the great Tony Horton used to say on the P90X videos...
.. do your best, and forget the rest.
It's a legit way to live, except...
... our best oscillates.
We can get better at our best...
... is there anything more exciting than knowing that?
I found a fun features on Strava today.
The Best Efforts Power Curve has a little box we can check and...
... Show Estimated FTP.
The last 6 weeks I've been pretty dialed.
According to the app I've raced FTP 10 watts.
The feedback is helpful.
Knowing we can improve...
... is a devine gift.

GO BIG, PUNK!
THROWING THE GEARS TO THE BIG RING used to be much more of a thing. With the advent of 13-speed, not so much. Lot's of 1x drivetrains...
... making things simpler.
Better...
- lighter
- more aero
- cleaner look
... depends on the use case.
MTB started it all,
can't even buy one with 2x.
Gravel bikes are mostly there,
some 2x systems.
Road and TT have special use for 1x.
Track and BMX have always kept it clean and simple.
Anyway, there I was this morning doing my dawgawn bestest to try and recapture my PR from Jan 2026 on a segment called Pain Cave because...
... who wants to just cruse home after hammerin'?

And it dawned on me...
... back in Jan I forced myself to stay in the big ring all the way up the steeps.
Did it work?
Kinda.
Knocked 2:47 off of last week's tepid attempt...
... still 48 seconds off the PR.
I looked back at my scale logs...
... I'm 2 lbs heavier, .5% higher in body fat.
Then my weight training...
... I'm doing a lot more leg work Sunday and Monday.
Probably not a great way to prep for Wednesday.
Lastly I looked at time spent in Zone 4 or above...
... 48 min in Jan vs 49 min today.
I'll take another cracky at it...
- come in lighter
- more rested
- caffeinated
... attacking with punk blazing style.

THE SUPER SUCCESSFUL DIET THAT IS POTENTIALLY KILLING OUR POTENTIAL
THERE ARE A LOT OF SUCCESSFUL plans to decrease our extra ballast. Perhaps the most powerful is one that we rarely actually apply to getting lean...
... yet allow to dictate our ultimate potential.
Case in point.
Eat the same meal, day after day...
... we'll get sick of it.
Eat less.
Waste away.
Lose muscle.
It's just a fact.
Yet, we do that same thing...
- same group rides
- same strength work
- same A race targeted
... with so much of our activities.
The inertia against improvement is overwhelming.
We can't do more,
become more.
We stall,
or worse,
we give it all up.
And why not?
It's become boring.
However, who can blame even the most monk-like amongst us who pack on the pounds because...
... there are so many amazing food choices to be had.
These days, living in any kind of a city, even the smallest, there can be found really creative and fun dining experiences.
We can eat more,
yes, become more.
Maybe not the more we are looking for.
If we're really going to reach new heights...
- new groups
- new strength work
- new A races targeted
... we must mix it up.
PS this applies to everything: love, family, business, sprituality.

WHY COACHING IS MAGICAL?
REACHING OUT TO THOSE we think are in the know is pretty common practice. We can glean a lot. Getting serious about outcomes and...
... hiring a coach is next level.
#worth-it
I was thinking about this because last week I had two different people reach out to me about training questions.
Asking for my input.
Here's the dill.
For the most part a coach...
... isn't going to wave a wand and fix us.
What we're really paying a coach to do is...
... to tell us what we don't want to hear and hold us accountable.
It's rarely a question of knowing what to do.
Much more a question of willingness to do it.
And, ya know, when you're payin' for it...
... it does magically work.
(and, I heckuvalot faster than wingin' it)

MASTERY OF THIS LAW = MASTERY ON RACEDAY
THERE IS AN UNDERAPPRECIATED MIRACLE all racers experience, yet often fail to recognize or implement in everyday life. If we did...
... who knows what we could accomplish.
Parkinson's Law.
Regardless of the distance or event...
... given a set of parameters,
a cohort of competitors,
we go faster.
Nobody signs up for a marathon with the idea of finishing...
... When I get around to it.
We laser in on the distance, time required, prep like mad...
... and execute.
Parkinson's Law...
... Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
We know this because on the week of the A race...
... we magically get all our work down days early so we can travel and chill before the big event.
The gun goes off and...
... amazingly, produce heretofore unknown abilities setting PRs and often hitting or exceeding our goal finish times.
Getting our workdays wrapped up within 8-10 hours was burned into our brains through the school system.
It's a tough habit to break.
Accepting a reasonable output during those same hours is mollifying...
... but, uninspiring.
Dramatically shrinking the time to finish the race or project...
Massively expanding the output...
Defying Parkinson's law...
... should be our nature in all we do.

MISSLE LOCK
BEING IN THE DRAFT is such a wonderful feeling. We slot in and feel ourselves get sucked along at...
... a dramatically reduced effort.
It's slight at first.
Just like when we lose it...
... we slowly come uncoupled until suddenly we're on our own.
So it was on this morning's ride to the ride.
Me and my pals, jamming up the coast.
I bombed down a sizable hill in front,
shot up the other side,
they slingshot on by.
And the gap just starts opening wider and wider.
It was too early to be burning matches.
I made the prudent choice,
flicked my safety cover...
... and acquired missile lock.
It took 5 or so minutes of a measured effort, but then I closed enough to start to feel the draft...
... it's like the radar going from beeping to a solid tone.
Target acquired,
detonation imminent.
The rest of the ride would be much of the same...
... alternating attacks trying to drop each other.
I'd learned my lesson,
stayed locked and loaded the rest of the ride.
As a reward to ourselves,
we honed in on Parlor Donuts.

THE EPIC SUMMER TRAINING
WHELP, IT'S THAT TIME A YEAR when most of us have/will have/should have/ better have something to train for this summer. Otherwise...
... what's the point of living?
Going all summer without a goal is just okay.
So, let me just tantalize you with something insane,
dare I say the best gravel ride in SoCal.
Dana Point to Big Bear...
- about 50% gravel
- 50% of the pavement is bike trail
- leaving from the sand, summiting before sunset
... qualifies as epic.
Kinda far,
120 miles.
Kinda climby,
14,409'.
Kinda memorable,
nothing like gittin' 'er done with friends.
This will be our 5th year/6th running (2 attempts in '21).
The basic layout is...
- dinner at my place Friday night
- 5am official start on Saturday
- dinner in Big Bear
... leaving just before sunrise, finishing before sunset.
Click on it to see videos and pics.
I'll be posting more.

WHAT IS STRONG?
WE HEAR IT said of others. We make the comment ourselves, too. It seams so natural until we think about it, that it's...
... being said of endurance athletes.
_____ is riding/running/swimming strong!
Huh?
We're mainly scrawny.
So what does Strong mean then...
- big fitness?
- big muscles?
... things I think about while zonetwoing out.
If it's just a muscle thing, does it mean because they are actually stronger...
... it's just easier for them to generate X than it is for the rest of us?
If it's a VO2 Max thing, does it mean they aren't any stronger...
... it's just not as taxing for them at X effort as it is for the rest of us?
Truthfully, this conversation with myself when I was doing...
- all out 10 second sprints
- atg weighted squats
- box jumps
... throughout the week.

DAMNED IF...
SOME WORKOUTS are better than others. There are those when we just don't wanna do. And those when we're really feeling it...

What to do?
Or not.
Like today.
We'd already hit it pretty hard...
- bursts up in the 600W range
- plenty in the 400s
- rest in 300s
... not sure that qualifies as overunders.
At the end of that hellish 35 minutes,
we head directly to a segment called Pain Cave.
I didn't want to do it,
already feelin' smoked.
Told BBB I was just gonna cruise it.
But, you know how that can go.
I looked down and I was doing 380 watts up the final push and you were disappearing.
Since he said that, I thought maybe it wasn't a bad effort.
Numbers don't lie.
24 min today vs 20 min in January (a PR).

WHY CONSISTENCY COUNTS
IT ALL ADDS UP. Every effort we make contributes to our pot of fitness, and while the ones half-@$$ don't deplete...
... they just don't get us where we want to be.
As quick.
Which is nothing compared to skipping.
Or quitting.
We're reminded of that every day when we're out and about seeing people of our generation.

19 TAKEAWAYS FROM LBL
THERE WAS A BIG SHOWDOWN at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the reigning unbeatable king vs the French teenage sensation vs the previous two-time winner...
... and I have some thoughts on that.
Not just that they swept the podium.
Firstoff, there was/is/will be a lot of chatter about...
... a 19 year old coming for the king of July, this July.
Some say too, young...
... should be holding him back.
To which I can only point to two other 19 year olds,
who didn't wait for their time,
their turn.
The very terrifying Mike Tyson,
knocking out everyone who dared.
Cooper Flagg who the critics claimed to be overrated,
before becoming the first teen to score 50 points in the NBA.
Paul Seixas has something more in common with the Tyson and Flagg,
the same quality Pogacar had when he came outta nowhere...
- which I find lacking in Remco, and so many others
... at 19, they were/are all having a lot of fun,
in love with the sport.
Simple.
Pure.
There's something beautiful and endearing to their approach,
we might lean into a little more.

JUST HOW MANY CODES CAN WE CRACK?
THE ENDURANCE ATHLET'S JOURNEY is endlessly fascinating, as continually learn more about what we are capable of. Add to that, the constant flow of new information...
... we are constantly cracking new codes.
That's funstuff!
I tried a new one today.
After years, and I mean decades when I say years, of my tried and true formula....
- 1 bottle per hour
- 3-400 calories per bottle
- under extreme training or racing
... I tried something new.
Yesterday, I was exposed to an old thought via the TrainerRoad podcast...
- drink water, when thirsty
- ingest carbs via gels or food
- increase carbs towards end of the effort
... which seemed very new, to me.
My main impetus for trying it out today was that a week ago at Sea Otter I started to feel very bloated...
... almost nauseous the last 90 minutes.
It was a real struggle,
and it sucked.
So, today I put it to the test on a ripping 4.5 hour ride...
- drank only 2 bottles
- got a little hungry last hour - didn't bring enough
- put out better numbers than I have all year, including racing
... I felt lighter, dare I say spry?
Def worth more testing.

A WEIRD AND INCREDIBLE OFFSHOOT OF LEG DAY
MAKING LEG DAY a regular thing is something some of us do in the "offseason" and few of us do year round because...
... that's just the way it's done.
What if it's wrong?
Since I've been extra committed to hitting the legs 2-3 times a week...
- with weights
- without weights
- super snappy, max sprints
... I've noticed something marvelous.
It's becoming harder and harder to back it down,
and do the spinny Z1 stuff.
Plus...
... threshold efforts are feeling easier and easier.
Why would that be?
I might just be getting stronger, but I think it's more like...
... it just feels so good to feel the burn.

ONE THING NOT TO EASE UP ON WHEN TAPERING
THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT CONFLICTING INFORMATION is that it means most competitors are conflicted about any number of approaches to maximum fitness. Whether that be training...
... or on raceday.
Tapering matters.
We know we should rest.
Just what does that mean?
Here's what works for me, and why.
I cut back the volume, but...
... I never cut off the intensity.
Cutting back the volume lets my body recover and repair,
the fatigue melts away.
Putting out short bursts of race pace in the final 7-10 days...
- 10-30 second efforts
- at 80-100% of max
- then super easy
... keeps my muscles, tendons and brain primed for action.
You might find that conflicting,
test it and figure it out,
for you.

THE TOOL KIT
HEADING OUT INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS we often carry tools of some sort. Usually, the basics. Sometimes more. Depends on...
... how crazy things could get.
Risks we are taking.
But, why do we do that?
We aren't planning to have a breakdown.
Yet, we know shift happens.
It's happened before,
gonna happen again.
The point isn't that we are expecting failure,
we are planning for success.
No matter what comes our way...
... we'll git 'er done.

DOES THIS MAKE MY BUTT LOOK BIG?
ADDING ANY NEW EXERCISE or movement often reacquaints us with muscles we didn't know we had, mainly because we've neglected to...
... engage them in meaningful ways.
We're sore.
My latest has been a pain in my arse.
Literally.
After my PT said I need to thoroughly stretch my legs with ATG (ass to grass) squats...
... I got started.
'cause I'm obedient as heck when it comes to my body's performance.
I used to do 'em.
In fact, back then...
- they don't bend over
- they lower down with legs
- to a full squat and make it look easy and natural
... I remembered seeing the little kids pick stuff up.
Anyway,
I'm back at it.
Started doing...
- a few ATG air squats
- to sets of 20 after 20 pushups
- to doing them with a 35 lb kettle bell
... and guess where I feel it most?
Los glutes.
Guess what is one of our biggest muscles,
and if engaged with a proper bike fit,
can develop all kindsa power?
Los glutes.
It's bringing me back to high school when the girl I was crushing on came up from behind in the hallway outside English class and pinched my butt...
... whispering Nice @$$.
Ah, the glory days!
Maybe I'll get it back, lol...
... at least a touch of the onthebike power?

THE PROJECT AND THE SYSTEM
THE IDEA THAT WE CAN HAVE a system to help us achieve a goal is a mighty fine way to approach any objective. Then, it's just a matter of...
... figuring out the inputs.
After we define the project.
It's looking like this summer is going to be...
- executing our biz plan
- planning a giant family reunion
- and being around for our latest grandchild's arrival
... while hacking Project Leadville.
Without training like a maniac.
By putting a system place,
I can take reasonable action each day...
... knowing I'll arrive according to plan.
Since my bike is already set...
- continue to build strength with sprints and weights
- get back to 2022's svelteness
- fix the everplaguing bike fit
... it's a matter of getting my body ready.
That should allow me to achieve Project Leadville:
- have fun and great energy daily
- put down a sub-9 time at Leadville this year
- stay on track for my very long-term goal of sub-9 at 70
... while keeping the main things - family and business - the main things.
There is a caveat to this kind of systems based action...
- Podiums are nearly impossible to predict
- PRs much easier manage and way more fun to chase after
... it works better for achieving PRs than podiums.
(I'm starting to wonder if I'll every write a complete sentence or an actual paragraph ever again. What is happening to my grammar?)

HUNGOVER AND LOVING IT
AFTER THE 'A' EVENT, nearly always comes some sort of hangover. Whether it's mission failure, mission meh...
... or mission accomplished.
Excess is inevitable.
For me that means doing whatever Surfergirl wants to do.
Rather than collapsing on the couch...
... like most Saturdays.
Instead, we drove the opposite direction of home...
- walked the length of the beautiful cove
- picked up insanely good pizza
- 16" not 9", cuz hungry
... to beautiful Carmel.
Followed by 3.5 hours of driving so we could wake when literallyworldfamous
Old West Cinnamon Rolls opened.

Then, 4 more hours on the road...
... cuz the lady likes to detour at the beach stops.
Arrive home,
unload.
Enjoy surprise visit and dinner with daughter and grandson...
... and, finally, collapse on the couch.
(normally, I love Monday morning... not sure about this one.)

SEA OTTER 2026: THE PLAN WAS...
THERE ARE FIGHTERS and there are wannabe fighters. We all identify with every type because at some point we've been there...
... battling our competitors and our minds.
Executing the plan,
get into Leadville.
But, as the great Mike Tyson sagely said...
... Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
Which is what the start of every race always feels like.
Today, was no different.
5-4-3-2-1 and we're all redlined hitting the opening climb...
... aiming to enter the single track at the top leading, or right there.
Because after that, the next 5 miles are very difficult to pass.
Too narrow.
And, there's lots of passing to be done as we generally roll up on the group that started ahead pretty quickly.
During the first 5 miles...
- Me
- Dean
- and Greg
... our podium was pretty much set.
We traded pulls that first lap,
and entered the second and final lap on the same time.
Here is where I had to make a decision...
- Greg was distanced just a bit
- Dean seemed to be slightly struggling
- The Ol' Diesel was feeling pretty good
... race for the podium or for a good time?
They are different things.
I decided to just ride my pace.
A gap slowly opened,
then, a lot.
I couldn't see them.
Just settled in.
Stayed on top of my nutrition,
kept the pace at tempo or above...
... as much as I could.
20 minutes later,
Dean, that crafty sunnavagun,
was closing on a longish climb.
Race for the podium or stay on pace?
I stayed on pace,
the gap opened back up...
... and I kept my helmet on a swivel the rest of the way in.
Let me just pause for a moment and reflect on how good it felt to be out on my bike and riding well. It had been a rough last couple of days on several fronts, and this morning...
... I just wasn't feelin' it.
Surfergirl sensed it.
You okay?
I dunno.
You're gunna do great.
Not sure I care.
Some days are like that,
sometimes it's on raceday
sometimes it's on workday
sometimes on familyday.
We always have a choice...
... to buckle up and fight
or not.
I'm glad I did.
All went according to plan, except like a newb I neglected to look at the time I should be shooting for: sub 5:10.
5:11
FTW.
I'll gladly take that and the gold coin allowing me entry in Leadville.

WE MADE IT TO LAGUNA SECA raceway. Checked in, got the race plate, twisties, and free t-shirt...
... then, the pass.
Big bucks, for Surfergirl's pass to walk into expo area,
which she was determined to do.
As the best support crew ever...
... she wanted to see the start/finish and feedzone area.
Proper.
I got in fir free because, I'm a racer.
My mission was to see...
- Andrew, director of marketing at Cervelo
- Ard, owner/founder of Kogel bearings
... a few new customers.
That was fun,
so was running into a bunch of friends...
... which is one of the best parts of being part of a community for a long time.
Once we got to the start/finish area...
- who is your main competition?
- I dunno who's coming.
- when will you come through for second lap?
- around 11-11:15 (2.5ish hours after start)
- which kit are you going to wear?
- something bright to match those crazy shoes
... she peppered with me with the usual questions.
We're ready.
Andale pues!

THE SUBTLE ART OF READING THE RACE
I WATCHED A BUNCH OF GRAVEL RACING VIDEOS TODAY. Simon, from GCN, talked about positioning himself up front at the start to allow for sliding space. Rather than making up ground...
... he prefers to slowly slide back, all day.
But, that got me thinking about the subtle art of reading a race.
You know, how it's unfolding.
Where the energy is.
The move to watch.
The kind of things coachy and racy people pontificate upon.
I shall do the same with this insightful view to what I see <- I say shift like that just to see if you're paying attention.
How the race unfolds is rarely dictated by the terrain. Instead, it's the competitors that matter.
Which, in my unhumble and cocksure opinion, is the point most of ya miss.
Amateurs and rookies worry about how to conquer a race's features.
Pros and victors focus on crushing their foes.
They aren't reading the terrain, they are reading each other. Which is just one reason I read a lot of books...
... rarely on bike racing.

ARE YOU CLIMBING THE RIGHT HILL?
TODAY DIDN'T TURN OUT AS PLANNED. What was supposed to be a ride with my pals, turned out to be 50 miles of soloing, all because I disrespected the course...
... and didn't pre-check my bike!
The Filthy 50 is always challenging for me. It's late in the year and I'm ready to play, not ready to slay. We were committed to do it and ride together and enjoy the beautiful course and see the peeps.
But, someone didn't check his electric remote wireless shifter and a full 1/4 mile into the course realized...
... I got no shifting.
Fortunately, in my RaceDay Bag™ I carry a few extra batteries: the 2032 that powers my chest strap also powers my shift lever. I hustled back.
12 minutes later, after hundreds left the start line,
I finally left,
which left me with a clean and clear course.
I could have been hacked off at my mishap. I wasn't. There was zero intention to race today. Honestly, I think it made my day even better.
That was the hill I set out to climb, a nice day on the bike.
All that to ask this question...

DO YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO IT?
IT'S A MIRACLE I'VE SURVIVED THIS LONG. How many times did I attempt to jump the gap? Or sprint before, through, and out of the corner? Risking life and lycra...
... fearlessly?
Being fearless doesn't take courage.
Courage is when you are completely aware of the sitch, and you know dern well...
... this could end really badly.
Courage is when you state your commitment publicly that you'll be winning or placing or finishing in a certain time, and failure...
... could bring a heap of mocking.
It's cool to fearless.

RAGE, RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT
HENRY KISSINGER IS ALIVE. He's 98. That blows my mind. Seems like he's been 56 for a hundred years. He still gets up, works hard all day, has dinner, keeps working. If you want to be forever vital...
... never stop working.
As we ease towards winter, it's tempting to back off. Quit all together.
Check these stats.
We usually have 30-40 guys on our Tuesday morning ride.
We had 15.
Same on Thursday evening.
We had 4.
Don't be that cat,
under the covers,
sipping hot cocoa.
My friend Frank reminded me of the great Dylan Thomas poem.
Do not go gentle into that good night...
... Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Someone gunna say, Dang you look good.

We all know,
it's the blood flow,

That, plus getting outside as much as we can.
Sunshine is a happiness drug, and we get it a lot more than most folks.
Oh, and one more thing...
... which I hope you're practicing.
We unplug when we ride.
No podcast.
No music.
While we give our bodies a good wringing out,
we give our brains a chance to uncouple,
from everything.
So, when they ask let 'em know...
... It's the blood flow that give me my glow.
Oh, and eating like an athlete...

MY HYPOCRISY KNOWS THE END
OVER THE WEEKEND I REALLY SCREWED UP. I broke rule number one, don't ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever skip eating after the big ride. But, things came up and there I was 5 hours later starving...
... which lead to massive binging.
Now I know I preach a lot about eating whole foods, but this was next level considering the narrow time window of my fall.
Whole double-patty hamburger, whole pint of ice-cream, whole bowl of fries, whole rack of ribs...
... and a whole lot more.
Finally I drifted off into a food coma...
... waking up a whole lot heavier.
Shift!
But, it was just one day and in a few days that will all be purged and I'll be back to where I wanna be...
... less of me.

CHECK YOUR FORM
DO YOU EVER CHECK YOURSELF OUT RIDING BY RETAIL STORES, all of you reflecting back from their large and shiny windows? In sophisticated circles we call this checking our form. The rest of us just call it what it is...
... does this kit make me look fat?
This off season, I've added quite a bit of weight training to my schedule. At least for me it's a lot. The key is...
... to have good form.
Good form means we won't get hurt.
But, we can sure fry our legs without even riding. This has made it much easier to stay in zone two.
Concurrently, I've been hyper focused on my riding form when on the bike logging these easyish base miles. Specifically, my pedal stroke. The proverbial...
... pedaling in circles.
Pushing forward along the top,
pressing down,
scraping mud off my shoes across the bottom,
pulling back up to the top.
I've also been working particularly hard at getting my ankles back involved. Somehow I'd lost a lot of flexibility and was just mashing down. Hence, I've been doing all kinds of exercises to get them back in the game and whipping across the bottom of the pedal stroke.
Anyway, consider this a public service announcement. While everybody else is just pedaling...
... check your form.

MY FREAKY FORMULA FOR FEELING FAST
I DISCOVERED THIS FREAKY FORMULA FOR FEELING FAST by accident. And, let the record show feeling fast is a big part of riding fast. But, the weird part is this feeling...
... comes for going way slower.
Then, it manifests itself in a PR fest the likes of which are on par with NYE 1999. I got a lion in my pocket...
... and baby he's ready to roar!
It happened yesterday.
Due to time constraints, I cut the 50 mile version of the Good Dirt Ride and hit a number of the single track sections I've been riding on my gravel bike while trying to piece together...
... The Grand Master Flash Sir Mixalotta Surfaces 100k.
But, that's another story.
What happened was I hit all single tracks on my superbadass fullsuspensionrocket.
Rather than bouncing all over the trail and feeling like I was riding on the limits of physics, as I have been on the gravel bike...
... it was smooth, and in slow motion.
A feeling of serenity and calm control...
... ripping faster than ever the same exact trails.
So why the PRs?
- Gravel bikes force me to pick the cleanest lines.
- Gravel bikes require a firm grip and a loose body (see Zen and the Art of Archery book review.)
The result is refining of the dirt skills via gravel bike...
... and ripping freakishly fast on the MTB.

OH BOY... DO I HAVE SO GOOD DIRT ON A LOCAL HERO!
DOUG GRANT CELEBRATED HIS 65TH BIRTHDAY by putting on the Good Dirt Ride and raising $101,652 for charitable causes. He's that kinda guy. Effective. Efficient. A servant leader...
... people naturally rally behind.
For his last time putting on the event, we had a light rain and the resultant hero dirt...
... the kinda dirt that is a moist and tacky.
It gives the feeling of riding like a hero.
So much grip.
Stand up and pound the pedals,
and the tires just dig and launch you forward.
Lean over and carve,
and it's like every turn has a perfect berm.
Of course he would conjure up just a morning.
As the riders came in from the 10, 25 and 50 mile courses, I could tell many of them had been challenged. There were a few nicks and bruises...
... but mainly smiles.
Happy to be done. Happy to have played a part in a worthy cause.
Doug was happy, too.
His final words, after many years of putting on the event, were a call to action...
... for all of us.
Isn't it wonderful that we able to set aside our differences and come together in harmony and do something good? Remember this, and keep building our community.
And that my friends, is the real dirt on a local hero: Doug Grant.
Few of us have what it takes to put on a ride of that magnitude...
... but, we can all invite a friend to join our next ride.

THIS IS HOW TO FEEL ON RACE MORNING
WHEN I'M TRULY READY FOR RACEDAY THE FEELING IS AMAZING. It's unlike all the other starts. Not hectic, not nervous. A quiet lake vs chaotic rapids. And that's how it should be...
... like going for an easy spin out your front door.
Routine.
Ho-hum.
Ready in every sense of the word.
Spirit.
Body.
Mind.
Are you feeling me?

TOP 8 REASONS NOT TO LIFT WEIGHTS
AFTER FULLY AND COMPLETELY COMMITTING MYSELF TO A STRENGTH PROGRAM, I can confidently let you know there are some excellent reasons to stay far away from such activities...
... but you be the judge.
First there are the obvious reasons;
- You prefer the sexy look of small shoulders, arms and chest with accompanying t-shirt stuck on belly.
- You prefer to be weak, unsteady and prone to fall off your bike.
The lifestyle reasons:
- You hate going to the gym when you could be riding.
- You don't have room for weights.
- You don't have time.
The silly reasons:
- You're afraid you'll gain weight - true for a scant few, but not you.
The real reasons:
- You don't know what to do
- You don't want to get hurt.
Those are legit.
I had the same concerns.
Figure it out, it doesn't take much time and the benefits are wonderful.
Then let the celebrations begin with your new found powers.
You might need a fancy, high-quality tool like this. Truly hard to find, and always impressive when your posse is over for a visit.
Retails for $48, but with this code...

... it's 50% off.
The code is GETSTRONG.

YOUR BIG SECRET AIN'T SAFE WITH ME!
AT THE RACE THIS WEEKEND, a bunch of cats will show up. Fancy kits, shiny bikes, niiiiice legs. But, there's a huge problem in diagnosing who the players are...
... even if you know them by name, like your friends.
Because what you don't know...
... will kill you.
The shift you can't see....
... the secrets.
What's in them bottles?
What'd ya eat for breakfast?
How well did you sleep last night?
What workouts are you doing off the bike?
Who's your coach and what did they tell you to do?
Are you even recording all your rides on Starva or hiding some?
If you think you know your enemy, think again...
... think hard.
Do they know you?
What are you doing different?
Have you added to your arsenal?
Deleted some of that mass we call flubber?
Now, all them blingy thingies you see at the start should and most likely do have a purpose...
... to keep you distracted from their Dr. Evil plans.
Shoot, I used to...
... and sometimes still do
... show up with a filthy bike and stenchy kit
... glasses askew
... grease on my calf.
And, my all time favorite don't mind me question...
... Do you know where the course goes?
Meanwhile, I'm running black chains and cassettes that are purrrrfect, silky smooth. Ceramic bearings and ceramic lube, a drive train prepped for annihilation.
I'm that kinda kat.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/secret-stuff
Here's an example of the secret stuff I use that can't be seen. Everything you see here has been battle tested and proven.
I wouldn't race without them.
Ever.
Too crazy.
Who doesn't want their legs to feel magical?
Who doesn't want their chain to be silent and smooth and seemingly completely free of drag?
Don't let all that training you do go to waste.
I can promise you,
there are very crafty cats scheming all kinds of ways to leave you far behind.
But, you wisely have me on your side.
If I had to choose just two of these products it would be these two, because of their startling performance gains.

GRUPPETTO STYLE CUE'S FOR 2022
I GOT PAID A NICE COMPLIMENT TODAY and it occurred to me it was most undeserved. Because in this case I've done everything possible...
... to copy the best.
Ha!... because the best let me know in clear (often foul) language, I had it all wrong.
From Nelson Vails teaching me how to hold my bars to the local honcho mocking my gear selection.
Ever been there?
Are you still there?
Would you rather be here?
I was riding behind you last week and man, have you got good form.
Shut up!
No really, I was and I could tell every single effort was efficient and aero and beautiful.
Stop!
I mean it.
Well, gauldarnit... that's a mighty fine thing to say. Thanks man.
Whether or not it's as true as he said, I'm sure my form is a lot different from those early days for one reason...
... I didn't take it personally.
Well, I might of. But, then I got over it and paid attention because I wanted to improve...
... a lot.
So, if you're lucky enough to have someone ruthlessly,
or lovingly,
or mockingly,
comment on your form...
... be humble, and take action.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/all-lights
Speaking of taking action, this morning was gnarly...
Even with all our bikes lit up
with the sun in our faces
with bright clothes on
... we had the closest call in my life.
Some crazy person passed a lumbering truck, across the double yellow...
and came head in into us, too damn close!
... get lit my friends.
Life is a helluvalot better in one piece.

WHY I KEEP IT SIMPLE
I TRY AND KEEP THINGS SIMPLE, as few cycling goals as possible. Like 2 or 3. It's not for everybody, but it works stunningly well for me. That's it...
... the rest is just putting the process in place.
The process revolves around the perfect week, and it's something I'm constantly fiddling with and adjusting.
Nothing big,
just little tweaks.
The big idea I set up a long time ago...
... figure out a process, that if followed, will deliver me as fast as possible to the finish line...
... with the least amount of time required.
It's like baking a delicious apple pie, you just need to know the recipe and have the ingredients. Then, put it in the oven and enjoy when ready...
... on raceday.
If you don't have a process or if your process sucks...

THERE ARE THINGS I WILL NEVER DO AGAIN ON A BIKE, involving skills I had honed over time and with much practice. I don't miss them...

I'll never...

GRAVEL RIDES ARE SO DUMB...
BY CHANCE, we met up with some of our other dropbar pals halfway through our respective group's rides. Grabbing Mexican Coke's and snacks at the country store, we chatted for a bit...
... then our little group continued on the gravel roads...
They'd traveled on asphalt,
we'd traveled mostly on dirt.
They'd dealt with cars,
we'd dealt with dust.
They'd paused at many lights,
we'd crossed a few streams.
They'd avoided road hazards,
we'd sliced single track.
... and that made all the difference.
I'd dragged, cajoled... nah, just invited a few of my gravleros to check out this route because after riding it last week I was worried it was too hard.
Turns out it's not...
It's challenging.
It's climby.
It's fun.
... according to them.
The question I have now is...
Can we do it under 4 hours if we're really getting after it?
Don't think so.
Really?
62 miles, 5000' of vert, some techy trails.
Yeah, it'd be hard.
You'd have to average just over 15 mph.
We averaged 14.
Maybe a pro, or some young stallion.
I left it that, ready for the challenge. But, first I think we need a few more practice runs and some much cooler temps.
Who's in for a dumb gravel ride?
I was wishing I had this tire on the back today. It was a little dusty and loose and climbing outta the saddle was tricky.
These are pretty hard to find.

I WAS ROBBED, LESSON LEARNED.
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF RACERS, I've been robbed by each. One is flashy, loud and intimidating. The other a sneakybastard. One is easy to spot and track. The other...
... a thief!
Let me tell you of a most glorious and disturbing race.
A few years back I trained all year for an epic 200 mile road race. I was really, really ready.
Fit.
Light.
Fast bike.
Altitude adjusted.
Superior support.
Everything was unfolding according to plan, until I flatted with 45 miles to go.
What followed was one of my most heroic (too much?) efforts ever. A reasonably fast tube change, and a 35 mile chase. 90 minutes on the limit, alone and in the zone.
I attached to the back, took stock of things, calmed my beating heart.
There in plain site was public enemy number one. Multi-time winner of the event, master's state, national and world champ, with the stripes to prove it...
... who'd beaten me soundly the previous spring when I'd ventured up to his territory to feel him out.
As we neared the finish line, I was in perfect position. On his wheel, and he was 2 guys back. I was feeling extremely confident. I had my quarry, I could see the line, I'd practiced specifically for this kind of long, straight, wide-open sprint...
... I was gonna win.
But, there was one problem...
... we weren't going fast enough.
This allowed the robber, in a plain unassuming kit, to slowly roll off the front. I watched the gap open, confident I could still catch and win. But, it kept opening, getting larger and larger until it was too late...
I beat the champ, and finished first loser...
... because I had been distracted by the flashy.
Each style will cut your heart out. One by intimidation, the other by stealth.
Which means two things...
... we have to protect our hearts and...
... we have to choose our own style.
But, don't leave it there. We must be flexible and not hard-hearted. Different racers, terrain, weather...
... require different styles.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/socks-and-gloves
Speaking of thievery and style...
... you, too, can rip me off right now!
There are all kinds of colors to choose from...
... and it's BOGO, buy one get one.
Our gloves are superlight. All mesh top, real leather palms.

IF YOU ONLY KNEW, YOU'D WISH YOU WERE IN MY SHOES
THERE'S NOTHING BETTER THAN A COLD, dark morning. And there's plenty of that on the way. We had our first one this week. In the 30's, and humid. Bone chilling. Just knowing most cats are tucked in and cozy...
... brings me joy.
Yeah, I know I'm sick.
But, dayem if it ain't glorious on those mornings. My breath, hot and steamy. The streets empty...
... the suns splintering rays fracturing across the retreating dark.
I live for that shift!
Most rollover.
Most put on the winter coat.
Then spend all spring taking it off.
vs. rolling out.
Isn't it awesome, getting a big head start on the rest of cats?
Takes some discipline at first.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/kom-jackets
And, the proper gear... like the KOM jacket.
This is one of my all time favorite creations. We make it using a very technical membrane fabric I import from Italy.
It is extremely wind and water resistant.
I named it the KOM jacket because it's perfect for tucking away on the giant local climbs and whipping out for the return trip down.

YOU'LL PROBABLY TAKE THIS PERSONALLY...
YOU'LL PROBABLY TAKE THIS PERSONALLY, not you... you're too wise and deep... I'm talking to the average smack talking, chest puffing Strava hero who doesn't know...
... KOMs aren't kool.
And trust me on this, I'm the first to admit I was once a KOM hunter. And the second to admit my helmet straineth mightily when I get one...
... and I still get 'em.
Real ones, with hundreds of attempts. Nearly always on the DH section of something fast, flowy and fun...
... that's my jam.
But this KOM jam is evil.
Capital E evil.
It deceiveth.
It lieth.
It pointeth in the wrong direction.
The point of our fitness isn't to kick the krap out of the other kids...
... our first focus should always be about discovery.
What can I do to improve?
How fast can I go?
Me.
Not thee.
Once I unlock the secrets of my fitness, I help others up...
... and that's a metric we can never measure...
... that gives real pleasure.

SOME THINGS ASTOUND ME
ON THE RIDE TODAY I HEARD AN ASTOUNDING COMMENT. Well, I asked for it. But, still, I was quite surprised because I know this cat has had some real challenges...
... to the point of being forced not to ride.
Who wants that?
Now, I'm not doctor, but I do play one here on the blog. Since the last time I saw him he was hobbling tenderly through Costco, I just had to know what had changed.
It's good to see you're riding again.
Thanks, it's great to be back.
Did you do anything different?
Yep, I quit playing tennis, quit walking and quit riding for 2 weeks.
Wow, that's a lot to give up.
I feel good.
This is where the doctor in me gently plants a seed.
Do you ever stretch?
Never. I hate it.
Do you think it would help?
Definitely.
Personally, I have experienced many aches over the years and I've found if I just go back to stretching they all go away pretty quickly. My little is easy...
... and takes no more than 15 minutes.
15 minutes.
Everybody's got 15 minutes.

I SCREWED UP 2 MAJOR GOALS FOR THE YEAR.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR I PUT 3 'A' RACES ON MY CALENDAR. They all seemed outlandish and outrageous. I accomplished one, DNS'd one, and blew off the last. I'm not exactly sure where I went wrong...
... but I'm feeling like a loser, quitter.
LoToJa, I got the coveted lottery.
Paid the princely registration.
Blew it off.
Marathon Nats, didn't even bother signing up.
Pretty weak.
But, it happens...
... at least it happened to me.
Honestly, looking back on it I think the gravel races messed me up. And, I think they messed me up for a couple of reasons.
First, I treated them as B races. Didn't taper. Didn't train specifically. Totally winged it...
... and that was a mistake.
Because, once I got on the start line I had a real Hellyeah! attitude and just went for it. Raced way beyond my prep, and went very deep.
Rock Cobbler was terribly hard. Crushar In The Tushar massively masochistic. And BWR, was super fun but weeks away from Nats.
In each case, though I had some surprisingly good results, I came out mentally drained. Physically, I was probably fine. In fact, looking at my numbers I had big fitness gains...
... but, I couldn't shake the belowthesurface dread of peaking again.
So, here I am.
Calendar in hand.
A few MTB races out there.
They're C races at this point. I'm going because I'm a sponsor. Maybe I should call them See races, instead.
See the country.
See my friends.
See how I feel.
There is however one, gigantic takeaway.
It is incredibly powerful to post your 3 main goals, on a humongous calendar. There is no denying that fact. Seeing it in Sharpie. Large. It works on your mind. Conditions you to believe. Forces you to take charge of your schedule.
That 3rd place and Silver Corral at Leadville, blew my mind.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/raceday-calendars%E2%84%A2
For sure, I'm shooting for a podium at Leadville. For sure, I'll go to Nats.

I'm not sure what if there will be a third A race... though I suspect it will be something gravelish.
What do you see in your future?
If you order the 2022 Calendar now, I'll include a 2021 calendar and ship it right away.
And yes... we can make calendars in your team colors... with your team events pre-populated.

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO DIE AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR
SOME SAY DEATH GIVES LIFE MEANING. I say racing gives training meaning. In each case, we are confronted with what we have made ourselves into. Therein lies the magic...
... our ability to change over time.
I register early for my A race(s), because I want all the time possible to prepare for the day of reckoning.
Change takes time.
Repetitive work.
Training.
Motivationally, here's nothing like knowing your going to die...
... errr, having an A race on the calendar.
What a way to keep our base fitness in a state of readiness! Kinda like being perpetually ready to meet our maker...
... except, more to our choosing.
So, choose your A race early. Mark it on your RaceDay Calendar, in red...
... and make the changes necessary to slay the day!

We are born athletes after all, and athlete's thrive in competition.

I GOT MIXED UP IN A LOVE AFFAIR
DO YOU EVER FEEL GUILTY TELLING YOUR RIDER'S STORY? Does your lover feel your heart rate's rise and fall, does she see your raging glory? Did you neglect to reveal...
... my life, my lover, my lady...
... has wheels.
I feel that way sometimes.
Only worse, lately.
It started at BWR, two weeks ago.
Everybody's huffing and puffing, and I'm grooving to the sweet beats, horns and spot on lyrics of Brandy, by Looking Glass... which I shamelessly tweaked for this post.
It's a truly mixed up affair I'm caught in..
... this gravel thing.
Today's ride went from pavement to fire road to pavement to fire road to single track to fire road to pavement to fire road to single track and so on...
... I love it.
All my passions rolled into one glorious adventure.
I hope she doesn't ask about it, 'cause I'm an honest man...
... and she doing her best to understand.
https://pedalindustries.com/products/the-way-of-the-r-a-c-e-r
I cover some of this in chapter 3 of The Way of the RACER.
Part of doing all we can do as racers is taking care of those who support us, first.

THE THING I LIKE ABOUT WEIGHT TRAINING
ONCE I REALIZED I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO TO THE GYM TO WEIGHT TRAIN, I got a regular plan going. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to go to the big box and hear the clanking and see all the preening. But, we aren't lifting for entertainment...
... we're going for results.
I get it done with adjustable barbells.
They quickly adjust from 20 lbs to 62.5 lbs, while taking up minimal space. Plus, a kettle bell. And, of course, the pull up bar. Oh, and my stairs.
Wednesdays are my designated day for weights year round. But, this time of year I also "lift" on Fridays, and sometimes on Mondays.
The thing that's great is it really taxes my legs, along with everything else. So, when I go for a ride I'm in no mood to put down the power...
... zone 2 rules the day.
And you know it feels like, doing this for a few months?
It feels like I'm doing a complete overhaul of a race car, down to the paint-stripped frame. Making everything stronger than before.
Better.

Have I told you how much I enjoy these tires?
They roll extremely fast, and still have a good edge for ripping the corners.

POWER METERS CORRUPT AND ABSOLUTE POWER METERS...
THE LITTLE OL' POWER METER, oh has it corrupted my good friend's approach to racing. Poor guy. I discovered this incorrect thinking when he related his latest attempt at a most difficult race...
... a mountainous error.
On the way back tonight...
How'd your last attempt go?
I had a good day, finished strong. No cramps.
That's great!
Yeah, except I got dropped on the climb.
The KOM?
No, Strawberry.
Now, I've done this race. And I've ridden that climb. It's huge. 30 miles from bottom to top and many thousands of feet gained...
... and it's not even the KOM climb!
I was blunt, because I love him.
You gotta climb more.
I put out good power.
Yeah, on the flats.
Isn't power, power?
And that's why I say power meters corrupt. This cat thinks power is power. It's not...
... because power is different in each riding position.
No, you have to train the position. You've need to spend a lot more training on terrain as close as possible to what you'll be racing.
Really?
Yes, all your Saturdays leading up the that race you must be climbing big long climbs.
But, I climb a lot on Saturdays.
Not like that race. We just have punchy 5-20 minute climbs around here. It's better than nothing, but not like a 60-90 minute climb. That takes getting use to, slightly different use of your leg muscles. Your back and core are activated differently. Different rhythms. Cadence.
Hmmmmm.
You gotta train the position to be in position to win.
That's power!
You know what else is power?

IT'S NOT ACTUALLY LIKE RIDING A BICYCLE
ANYBODY THAT TELLS YOU IT'S LIKE RIDING A BICYCLE doesn't understand what riding a bicycle is. In fact, outside of the cats at Boston Dynamics, I'd say nary a soul on the planet understands what the heck we are doing...
... but, it doesn't matter does it?
Do we have to know the physics of pedaling to slap those gorgeous smiles on our faces every time we ride?
Nope.
We pedal over, around, up and down,
we ride fast and slow,
we flow...
... on faith.
We watch others and have faith we can do it too. We don't need to know exactly how it works.
That's all.
Well, not all.
Because this beautiful BMC hardtail was mis-shipped to us.
Rather than send it back to the warehouse...
... I'll make you this smoking offer:

Retail is $2000, you can snag it for $1800.
We shouldn't even discount, seeing how hard it is to get bikes. But, it would be a win-win...
... if you need a medium, that is.

THE BEST WAY TO KEEP YOUR LEGS SPARKLY THIS TIME OF YEAR
IT'S GETTING WETTER. Rain, sleet, snow. They're all on the way. We had rain all night, until 4am. I rolled at 530am anyway, because as a wise man once said...
... sometimes it rains on RaceDay.
The technique I used today to keep my legs sparkly requires brute force, guts and determination. Which means if you use it...
... you'll be gnaaaaaarly.
I didn't even notice I was doing it. Just doing my thing.
All the way to the start,
on a massive chunk of the ride,
and all the way home.
At a light, a certain handsome feller pulled up.
Oh man, look at my legs. My socks!
Bummer.
You're not even dirty.
Uh... maybe you should pull through more instead of mastering wheelsuckery.
Now, I just wanna be clear... we weren't drilling it today. In fact, I'll probably be posting soon about keeping things in check in the offseason.
Until then, keep challenging yourself.

THIS DUDE IS IN DENIAL
I WAS JUST READING SOME OF THE HEADLINES FROM YESTERDAY'S EPICALLY EPIC BEYOND EPIC Paris-Roubaix. This one is just classic. I didn't even read the article...
... because we all know this dude!
Here it is...
oh, crud...
I can't stop laughing...
but, I promise...
I'll post it...
... hahahahahaha...
Lampaert: I think I was the strongest rider at Paris-Roubaix
Now that is some classic I coulda been a champ thinking right there.
What a dork!
Bro, if you were the strongest...
... YOU WOULD HAVE WON!
Because guess who won?
The strongest guy.
Oh, did you have some bad luck?
Did someone cut you off?
Did you get flatsypoo?
That's racing...
... that's exactly why we race.
To find out who really is the strongest.
Period.
Alright, not really.
That's why the pros race. Because they get paid to win.
We race to find out what we're made of.

TOP 2 MISTAKES ALL RACERS MAKE
THERE ARE 2 WAYS TO SCREW UP YOUR RACE STRATEGY. Each has to do with vision. Not through the Oakleys or 100%s or KOOs, but far behind the retina...
... we fail to see things as they are.
I've made each of these mistakes.
First, we think everybody is way faster and better prepared than we are.
Second, we think they are all slow, weak and lacking grit.
Discipline is the only antidote.
We must trust our training and our plan to deliver the only result that matters...
... 100% of all we have.
That is success.

THE HEART OF RACING IS ON LIFE SUPPORT
IT COULD JUST BE ME, but I don't think it is. The heart of racing has changed. If you've been around a 1000 years, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you're new to bike racing, the heart of the sport is on life support...
... and that's a good thing.
Today's agro group ride was typical of what I'm talking about.
In fact, Rigo and I did just that. We talked.
So did Justin and I, fist bumping the great turnout.
And Patrick and I, he caught me up on his son Luke's winning ways.
And Bart and I, musing on the beautiful morning.
And Steve and I, waving while going in opposite directions.
... you get the idea.
The old days of outward anger and fire and rudeness are being buried. And, before you say
Old Diesel you're mellowing...
... just know there was all kind asskickery going on.
The new way is to kindly rip each other's legs off.
And I like it.
What is the source of the change?
Well, it just might be the influence of the softer, bigger tire sides of the sport. Which are where all the growth is...
... but, I'll let you be the judge on that.
https://pedalindustries.myshopify.com/products/the-way-of-the-r-a-c-e-r

THE EASIEST PROBLEM IN THE WORLD TO SOLVE
WE HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM, you and me. It keeps a lot of our pals from joining us, and it's our own fault. Someone will ask, How far did you go?. And, this is where we blow it...
... we make it look easy.
Oh, I dunno. About 60 miles.
Think about that for a moment. For us, on bikes, its sheer joy.
For them, driving 60 miles sounds terrible. Sitting on a hard wedge, in pajamas, pedaling...
... unthinkable.
They consider the unthinkable, our ho-hum response, and there's no way to convince them that they'll be able to keep up...
... ergo, huge problem.
Of course, we could say we rode 8 miles and it was hard as hell. They'd believe that. If we challenged them, they'd be up for it.
Do we lie then?
Nah.
We just debelish, which is a word I made up just now and it means to de-embelish. Like this:
How far did you go?
About an hour.
Wow!
Yeah, I got a good warm up and cool down. It was actually pretty fun on this little trail or forgotten road.
That is something they'll believe. Yet another reason to report time vs miles.

STOP COUNTING THE MILES
THERE'S A REASON I DON'T COUNT MILES. I mean I do, but I don't. Not really. Because miles don't really count. There is only one thing that counts...
... time.
Time in the saddle.
In four hours on the road, I can cover 100 miles. On a twisty single track, 100 miles can take 8-9 hours.
Don't count the miles, make the miles count.

I'VE NEVER MET SOMEONE WHO COULDN'T RIDE 100 MILES
HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE YOU RIDDEN 100 MILES WITH? My first 100 miler was actually 125. 6 of us started out. 2 of us finished...
... everyone should have made it.
None of were accomplished. I had a mere 6 weeks of riding under my bib straps. The others had all started that summer. We were enthusiastic.
It took all day.
Sunrise to Sunset.
Why did the others quit? I dunno.
Fear maybe, that they'd get stuck in the middle of nowhere.
No sense of needing to rise to the challenge, perhaps.
Yesterday, reader Craig asked...
How do you do at least 10 pull ups each day? I tried to do 10 today and couldn't even do one.
I told him my secret.
I was pathetically weak, just like you. I started with one, the rest I did by jumping up and lowering myself down slowly. All those muscles are connected. Just get started, and stick with it. You can do it.
At BWR on Saturday, I caught up with friend Matt. He did the whole Waffle, 130 miles on gravel. We were laughing about the first time I dragged him out on a bike.
Do you remember that first ride?
Haha, yes, of course.
I couldn't even make the half mile to the trail. I was so embarrassed I turned around within about 5 minutes.
Look at you now!
You know, bikes has probably saved my life. I'm so much healthier.
That's why I say I've never met someone that couldn't ride 100 miles...
... now just imagine if they did!

THE ORIGIN STORY
THERE'S A LOOP IN UTAH THAT STARTED IT ALL. Beginning in the college town, riding across the valley, and up a giant climb. It's majestic. Rugged rock cliffs jut up on each side, graced with pine, aspen and bubbly streams...
... I never feel pain here.
I should, but I don't.
In the best of conditions, it's an hour to the top. In the worst, it can be deadly.
Heavy canyon winds.
Ice.
Rain.
Snow.
11 miles straight up. 3000' in vert. Topping out at 8000'.
Then, straight down, back to town.
But, not straightstraight. A series of countless turns, mostly banked and in good shape await.
Rippable.
The kind of terrain that makes one feel immortal...
... wishing it would never end.
That's my origin story of road racing.
I think the most beautiful part is that I'm not really a climber. Not the pure kind. But, born to climb nonetheless because I love it to so much....
... the effort,
being in the zone,
watching the rocks and trees slip by,
reaching the summit,
bombing down...
... that's my jam, what got me hooked, keeps me going.
Today was classic.
Took the gravel bike, 40s and all.
Temps in the 50s to start.
Light wind at the bottom,
light rain at the top.
Just me, like that first day.
Plus a snack at Sundance.
Perfect.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/kom-jackets
It was exactly the kind of climb I created the KOM jacket for...
... warm at the bottom, inclement weather at the top.
Pulled it out of my back center pocket, were it easily nested waiting to fly.
We make it from a superlight membrane fabric we import from Italy. It's breathable, yet extremely wind and water resistant.
The KOM jacket is truly one of my favorite pieces. Because along with the above it's pretty darn aero. I worked had getting sleeves just right so the jacket doesn't turn into a parachute.
It's my goto any time it's gonna be chilly, and potentially wet.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT E-BIKES?
I HAD A GUY GET SO UPSET ABOUT MY LAST POST ON EBIKES HE QUIT READING THE BEST BLOG ON THE PLANET, AND HARSHLY TOLD ME OFF! I wonder how many more readers I'll lose with this one? No one that matters. Because quite frankly...
... I think e-bikes are for ______.
Before I spill the sport-beans, let me just say this morning was a total hoot. Shane, one our kids, borrowed a true e-bike (more on that below) for me.
We jammed an early morning scoot through his local mountains. Fire roads mainly, and a few hidden race tracks with berms and jumps.
The muscle memory was hilarious.
For years our family rode g-bikes (gas!) in the desert every weekend, each winter. The first hill we went down my right leg is stabbing down wildly and I can't figure it out.
It's looking for the rear brake pedal!
Ha, none of that on a real e-bike. Just pegs. The brakes are on the bars like an h-bike...
... excepted swapped, like a g-bike.
These e-bikes are pretty small, lightish (150 lbs lighter than a g-bike), with a healthy amount of travel and rake. Really whippable, once you get the feel of the thing...
... they have a bright future, for sure.
So, here are my thoughts.
H-bikes are human powered, have pedals, and will keep in you fantastic shape.
G-bikes are gas powered bikes with pegs.
E-bikes are electric powered bikes with pegs.
M-bikes are motorized bicycles, have pedals, and will allow those with health conditions to enjoy cycling. They help a lot of people get in betterthannothing shape by simply getting outside and moving around. They are great transportation, too.
Which one should you get?...
... the one that will deliver the results you want.
One last thought, please keep the e-bikes, m-bikes, and g-bikes off the sweet and fragile h-bike trails.
Side note, during the moto/kid raising years I kept riding h-bikes. Not as much as now, but I always rode. Always. And, most years I had one epic event during the summer to keep me focused throughout the year.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/socks-and-gloves
Looking back, I think riding g-bikes got me used to full-finger gloves. The grip and control is so much better...
... which is why I developed the superlight race gloves for h-bikes.
They're like a second skin, a lithe layer.

If you order with the extra-amazing socks, the socks are free. No promo code needed.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE HEALTHY CHOICE
ONCE YOU REALIZE I'M ON THE ONLY ONE ON YOUR SIDE, life gets a lot easier. I have an amazing bullshytometer, developed through years of observing BS. It's so powerful...
... I have to shut my mouth most of the time.
Which, as it turns out, is a fantastic way of protecting against so much BS.
Take for example, Fat-free Redvines. The shouty statement on the packaging is the kinda BS that destroys athletic potential. Its purely poisonous corn syrup, of course there's no fat.
Or, Gluten-free ice-cream. Same shyty trick. It's cream, of course there's no gluten.
Another beauty, people who consume just a little bit of X are healthier. Same dern shyte because...
... most fools are chugging, smoking, and downing mass quantities of X.
Matthew Van Der Poel's health has not fully returned after going OTB at Olympic MTB race. Today, he should have been a major factor in the World Champs. He struggled mightily. This has nothing to do with consuming shyte...
... and everything to do with performance.
Health is paramount.
So, listen to me...
... and, by me, I mean you!
Listen to your intuition. How do you feel after X?
You and I want to go as fast as possible with these bodies of ours. It's up to us to know what's truly good for athletes.
Good stuff in,
good good power out.
My simple dietary rule for RaceDay Ready:
Eat as much raw food as possible
if I can't identify the ingredients by looking at the food in my hand, I skip it.
In a world of conspiring marketers, we've got to do our own research. We've got to pay attention. We've to be evermore vigilant...
... if we want to survive and thrive any quest, on or off the bike.
Develop your Bullshytometer, and share your findings with everyone...
... that is actually what friends are for.
Stay fast my friends!
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/hats-1
Some of the best reminders are things we wear, which I why I love this hat.
It reminds me that what I do today will affect how I do on RaceDay.
If you need a reminder like this, get one.
Not in the budget? Skip the next couple of caffeinated milkshakes from Starbucks.
Win-Win.

BWR CEDAR CITY
I HAVE DONE A FEW GRAVEL EVENTS, but this was a race. The others, more insane tests of endurance. The Crushar, crushed my soul. Rock Cobbler, endlessly nailed my body. BWR, The Belgian Waffle Ride...
... is bar to bar,
gravel to sand to asphalt to single track,
racing.
Drafting,
dust surfing.
I wanted to do a BWR for years, and I've wanted to do a gravel race for just a long. One thing that held me back was the humongous distance, 130 miles...
... but, my friend Bill, said do the Wafer.
60 miles.
I'm not sure if he said that or not, but turns out it was a little longer. 84 miles, 4000' of vert. No prob.
It started at 6am, with Belgian waffles. Real ones. Delicious.
At 745, we hit the course.
Superpro 5 mile police escort. There's just something about doing a race with police escort. I love it. It says...
... the promoter cares, the town cares.
Fortunately, I was warned that the first gravel sector started with all of us funneling down to double-file to go through a tiny tunnel under the highway. I came through top 15.
Good thing.
Bill, and his BBI henchmen, were single file and drilling it!
Gaps were opening.
The rest of us were clinging and closing.
Around mile 20, we swept up the PRO women, who'd left 7ish minutes ahead of us. We rolled on by, but then they started clawing their way to the front. Clearly they were game for our pace. This went on for a bit as we hit some twisty rollers...
... then we hit a stout climb.
It was the kind of climb where you think Ah, this must be the top and come around a turn to see another pitch.
I got ejected, along with what was left of the lead Wafer group.
A group of or guys made it.
But, it looked like a lot more because 6 or so of the top women were there.
Not knowing the course, throttling my pace seemed prudent. Plus, eventually we'd descend...
... and you know how The Old Diesel likes to rip down.
Enrique, Frank, Craig and I, gathered up 3 pro women and were laying down some good power. We worked well together.
We started picking up the Waffle riders who started 15 minutes ahead of us. Some of them worked with us, most just hung on. Can't blame 'em, they went another 50 miles.
Speaking of 50, just before aid station at mile 50 was a long sandy climb. I felt extremely fortunate to have a clear path and was able to clean the whole thing.
Are you getting a sense of the raciness of this?
The crafty, drafty?
Surfing from one group the next. Bigger cats dropped on climbs, then rolling up on the light cats. Working together.
Around mile 55, the Wafflers went right. We went left.
Suckers!
I say this in jest, it's clearly a much harder race. The Wafflers are awesome.
I had no idea how we were doing overall. In my mind there were 15 people up the road. And we were a long way back...
... the four of us had a pretty good rotation.
Early on I thought I might have cramping issues. I was hitting the Salt Tabs early and often. Drinking plenty - they give you cold, full, new waterbottles. Eating Honey Stinger waffles. Sucking down maple syrup. Saving the Hammer mocha caffeinated for the last 20 miles.
At our pace, I could see we were going to be much quicker than what I'd estimated. I was thinking 5 hours. We were going much faster.
Before the 5 miles of rocky, kinda technical single track, is a long gravel climb. Not a tree in sight. It's hot. Dusty. Any weakness would be amplified and unfortunately we lost my pal Frank.
3 of us hit the single track.
To my surprise, our skills were equal enough that we stayed in contact with each other. At the same time, we picked off one of the cats who hauled off early with the top pro women.
He was struggling.
We weren't.
Never saw him again.
We did see a dude with a groovy rainbow jersey. We blasted by. He gathered his reserves and caught on.
Next we saw Bill...
... going the opposite direction!
He usually beats me like a drum, so I figured he had finished and was riding back to find Frank. Nope. He'd missed a turn...
... which totally sucked.
As we're coming into town, guys are taking short pulls and skipping pulls. Not knowing any of them, I can't tell if they're tired or playing games.
I let a gap open. It got bigger. Finally someone came around. Then another. That answered that.
A mile later, Bill and rainbow guy slipped off the back.
Three of us left.
300 meters to go.
Lots of downtown corners...
... and bam, there's the grassy finish.
I wound up 2nd of our 3 up sprint. Could I have done better on that sprint?
I dunno.
Would I have ever in a million years guessed I'd end up 5th Overall and win my age group?
No way.
https://pedalindustries.com/products/the-way-of-the-r-a-c-e-r
In my book, I cover the importance of reviewing each performance.
My takeaways?
I got to the start late, lined up in the back. Wasn't a big deal, but could have been.
For sure, I messed up that sprint. First, I should have pre-rode it yesterday. It would have been obvious how hard it would be to pass in final 300m.
I've been feeling pretty burned out since Leadville. If I'd prepped better, I think I would have made the early climb. But, maybe I'd have blown later trying to hold that pace. 1st-3rd beat us by 9 minutes.
My food was perfect.
My bike amazing.
I also talk about repeating, meaning racing again.
So, where's another gravel race?

WE AREN'T OUT OF THE WOODS YET
THERE A FEW SKILLS YA JUST GOTTA HAVE if you're gonna be a rider of any respect. Whether or not you have 'em is real apparent when you're far from help, like we were today. My sexy MTB had be come a downer. Not a rip downer...
... a slow downer.
The back brake was dragging.
A lot.
The rear wheel would barely we spin and we wanted to rip this little single track. Stretch our legs after a long drive. Loosen up before BWR in the morning.
Simple recentering the brake didn't work.
I didn't have all the perfect tools, so here's the hack.
I cut an old credit card in half...
I loosed the brake, again,
dropped the wheel,
jammed a flathead between the calipers to spread 'em wide,
slammed the wheel back in...
... and shoved a piece of the credit card on each side of the rotor...
... then, pulled the brake lever, bringing those calipers in snug,
tightened the brake,
removed the credit card halves,
tightened the brake,
spun the wheel,
no drag,
went for a ride.
Normally, I have this cool little piece of steel with me. But, I didn't. I think that's one of the best parts of breaking down far from help...
... remembering how to improvise.
It's part of expecting good things to happen.
Which is part of The Way of The RACER.

CYCLIST DISCOVERS MASSIVE TIME HACK
NEWS IS SPREADING AROUND THE INTERWEBS of a cyclist who has discovered a massive time hack. It happened at 11:06 am, Thursday, September 23, 2021 in San Clemente California. Due to an urgent need to move quickly...
... he learned how to cut his finishing time in half.
Some are calling it a miracle.
Others are very doubtful his recorded time is accurate.
We sent a reporter in.
Sir, you just cut a whopping 50% off your estimated finishing time.
Yes, it’s true. Phew... let me catch my breath.
Okay... ready?
Yeah... Hellyeah!
How did you do it?
Well, it’s like this. I knew I had to move twice as fast because I needed to get on the road. I simply had to haulass.
I don’t understand.
Me either.
I had all this work to do, got up a little earlier, raced around like my life was on the line...
... and finished in half the time.
Finished what? A race?
No, all my work so I could go to a race.
Am I the only one who has noticed how much we can get done when trying to get out of town?
Kinda makes ya wonder...
What I’m not wondering about is how I’ll do Saturday at BWR – Cedar City. Not one bit...
... no time hacks planned.
No Surfergirl handups,
No course recon,
No chat those who’ve done it.
Going full tourist mode, and looking forward to some beautiful and challenging terrain...
... on gravel.
It's a racer's life for me.

WHY THEY SUFFER AND WE DON'T
TODAY WAS DRTY WDNSDAY. Sometimes it's MTB, sometimes it's gravel. Sometimes it's spicy, sometimes it's mild. My pal is visiting and I promised it would be mild, but I forgot. One cat's mild is another's
.... It burns, gimme some water!
His skills are on par descending, it was the climbing. He was hurting. Gasping, begging for directions back...
... No way, this next trail is too good!
Sometimes I can be evil that way, but only because I know this cat belongs in my posse. He's born to ride...
... and those born to ride don't really suffer.
Even when the legs and lungs burn, and they were searing,...
... they find joy.
When others quit...
... they persevere.
In defeat...
... they learn and improve.
Of course, once we returned, after the cool down, we sat in the fading sunlight. Smiled. Then he looked at me...
... Same time next week?
Hellyeah!

This kinda riding is the stuff our products are born from.
Steve sent me this pic and message today, pretty cool.

If you haven't tried out gloves and socks, don't you think it's time?
Especially with the insane, but the gloves get the socks special going?

MAYBE YOU CAN OUTSOURCE YOUR FITNESS
ABOUT 7 WEEKS AGO I PUT OUT A MESSAGE. A request. A dare. A challenge. I needed guinea pigs, rats, mice? It went kinda like this...
... RIDERS WANTED:
10 weeks to RaceDay Ready: expect pain, mind-stretching, new habits, time lost. Results doubtful, confidence and fitness should you make it.
There was one thing that had people dropping like flies.
It surprised me.
They were required to post their results each day.
Just post.
Miss a day and they were out.
Hardcore.
Blocked.
Of course you can't outsource your fitness, but you can outsource your task master to some heinous person like me... and you should, if you need it... and a lot of us need it, not NEED, but need like need some sort of accountability.
So get a plan.
Like these cats who took me up.

COULD YOU BE A CYCLING GOD?
WE CAN ALL BE CYCLING GODS. In fact, I'd say most of us are. Before you go sending me off to hell for blasphemy. Hear me out. I think I have a point, because like God, we are molding something from the proverbial clay. Our bodies, one pedal stroke at a time...
... god-like power it is.
We harness the potential within and become cyclists. We ride and get stronger. Our wimpy legs get tight and taught, even veiny...
... isn't it amazing?
We summit stairs and climbs with ease,
while others gasp and wheeze.
And, we love every moment of it.
If you haven't ever used your powers in a race, have I got a book for you.

HOW'S YOUR WILL POWER?
MOST PEOPLE HAVE A CHEAT DAY, and end up cheating themselves. I was one of 'em for years. TBH, I still get on that train from time to time. But, that's not the point of this post...
... this Will fights aliens.
He's independent.
Successful.
Fresh.
Like a prince.
And here's how he lives his life.
So if you stay ready, you ain't gotta get ready, and that is how I run my life.
- Will Smith
Ready is the base level, not the top...
... the top is tapered and ready to slay it on RaceDay.
We should always be ready to take on any race, maybe not win it or PR it, but...
Fit.
Gear prepped.
Bike well-maintained.
... that kinda thing, that's the base.
The way we live, The Way of The RACER.

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH NOODLES IN YOUR DIET?
FIRST, WHO HAS THE BEST NOODLES? The Italians, and their delicious pasta dishes? The Asians, with the amazing wok delights? Whatever your flavor...
... there's one noodle that must be a staple.
It's not noodle the word.
I'm talking about noodle the verb.
Which is exactly what I needed after a very punishing breakfast of pounding out 57 miles and 4500' feet of climbing with some of the fastest cats in town.
... wouldn't you agree?
At the apex of the final climb, I shut 'er down...
... coasting down to the coast,
then along the coast,
then a friendly snack,
and on home.
HR for the last 15 miles and 500' never got over 118, and dipped as low as 92. Ave speed 13.
That my friends is noodling...
... and I don't think we do enough of it.
Cruising.
People watching.
Barely touchin' them pedals.
Waiting patiently for the little ol' lady to cross the street.
Not cracking a sweat.
Not breathing hard.
Just chilling.
Have you had a healthy of noodling helping lately?

I DON'T THINK YOU CAN HANDLE THIS
AS THE GREAT BEYONCE SAYS, I don't thing you're ready for this jelly. 'been grooving to Bootylicious all day. Even added it to my WingedWolf playlist, because I just love the mindset...
... I don't think you can handle this!
It's the kind of mindset racers have when they roll into the parking lot. It's a swagger that comes from the confidence of being ready...
... to slay it.
How do we get there? We put in the time, do the work, ride the miles, we prep the bike, we eat like the athletes we were to be...
... it's our destiny to have a great day.

YOU CAN ALWAYS GET FASTER
YOU CAN ALWAYS GET FASTER. Always. That's the hardest and best part about getting really good at something. In beginning, the gains are rapid and huge. In the end...
... improvement is made of tiny slices.
But check it out.
If you rode 10 minutes longer each day,
that's 60 hours in a year.
If you ride 10 hours a week,
that 10 minutes turns into an additional 6 weeks of training.

URBAN GRAVEL, IT'S THE BEST
THERE'S JUST NOTHING QUITE LIKE URBAN GRAVEL, which is probably why it's so hard to explain. I mean really, how do you explain the thrill of the road with dirt, and curbs, and alleys, and singletrack...
... without sounding like a madman.
Mat made that clear tonight after tagging along on his MTB. He couldn't believe how fast we could go across dirt and somewhat raucous terrain. Then when it got smooth or we hit some pavement...
... he was off the back.
Poor guy.
But, not poor.
He was a lot richer for the experience.
You've opened my mind guys.
Yeah?
Yeah!... I've got my stoke for riding back.
And there it is.
Because URBN GRVL opens up a whole new network of loops and trails. It's a different kind of riding.
Less cars.
Less stress.
Less tradition.
More adventure.
More creative.
More stoke.

THIS IS GOING TO BE REALLY BAD NEWS FOR SOME OF YOU
THERE ARE A LOT OF HARD TRUTHS IN BIKE RACING. Some are harder than others. Most are exceptionally difficult for a certain group of people. I don't mean to single them out, but I will...
... because I love them, the newly converted.
And, they need to hear...
... It's gonna take more than a year to haulass.
It's true.
And, if we're being really honest...
... It takes 3 years to figure out what kind of racing really suits our talents and skills.
So let's kit up and get after it.

WHAT IS AN OFFSEASON ANYWAY?
AT SOME POINT IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS we'll be calling it quits. Season over. Some of it is forced, there just aren't any more races on the calendar. The rest of it is welcomed...
... there just isn't any more will to race.
Either way, it always make me feel like a bear. A great grizzly who has rampaged through spring, loaded up in summer, bashed about in fall...
... ready to slumber.
Typically, right before the slumber part I tend to get really bear-like and pack on some extra pounds.
I take some time off.
I get antsy.
Then I start laying down the base. First just random miles and whatever pace seems fun. Then more time in the saddle, purposely down in Z1 and Z2.
Friends might wanna get all racy, I pass.
Keep taking it easy, like a slumbering bear. My body repairing and rejuvenating. Lots of miles alone.
The thing I like the most about this grizzly analogy is once the hibernation is over...
... I'm hungry, and lean (and mean).
Good night, now.

THE QUICK GETAWAY WITH A HIGH RETURN
AMONG THE MANY AMAZING BENEFITS OF RIDING BIKES is the quick getaway. Thrown on the kit, helmet and shoes, fill up a bottle, grab yer wallet...
... hello freedom.
At the end of a particularly challenging week, I needed a quick vacay. I did the above and set off with no particular place to go.
I find these rides essential to my survival.
They come with the added bonus of finding little hideaways which remain invisible to rest of our citizenry.
A lone bench high above town.
A bakery on a forgotten corner.
A country store on a quiet road.
A bicycle, mine anyways, has such a great return on investment...
... forget the rewards of good health and friendship, the mini vacations are priceless.
