THE SUBTLE ART OF READING THE RACE
I WATCHED A BUNCH OF GRAVEL RACING VIDEOS TODAY. Simon, from GCN, talked about positioning himself up front at the start to allow for sliding space. Rather than making up ground...
... he prefers to slowly slide back, all day.
But, that got me thinking about the subtle art of reading a race.
You know, how it's unfolding.
Where the energy is.
The move to watch.
The kind of things coachy and racy people pontificate upon.
I shall do the same with this insightful view to what I see <- I say shift like that just to see if you're paying attention.
How the race unfolds is rarely dictated by the terrain. Instead, it's the competitors that matter.
Which, in my unhumble and cocksure opinion, is the point most of ya miss.
Amateurs and rookies worry about how to conquer a race's features.
Pros and victors focus on crushing their foes.
They aren't reading the terrain, they are reading each other. Which is just one reason I read a lot of books...
... rarely on bike racing.
