HOW THE HECK DID I GET IN THIS POSITION?
WE CAN SCREW UP ALL KINDS OF THINGS IN RACING and most of them can be overcome quickly with little lasting damage to our odds of a good performance. One exception is bike positioning...
... and, I ain't talking about bike fit.
Bike fit is important, how we position ourselves is importanter.
You can have the best sprint in the world, but if you're a hundred cats back with 300m to go you gott no chance of winning. None.
If you're galloping along with the group in an MTB race and the course goes from fire road to skinny single track you better be darn sure you're up front.
Should we always be up front?
Gosh no.
It's mighty nice and wise to float back and get sucked along in the draft and energy of the peloton mid-race.
Some of us start a climb at the front, banking on the idea we can drift to the back and still be connected before dropping down the other side. Others, like to start back a ways and weave through the shrapnel.
The first rule of positioning is deciding what kind of rider we are...
... and then race accordingly.
