ARE YOU TRAINING AS SMART AS GOLDILOCKS?
AH THE AGE OLD QUESTION, would anybody sit in your saddle or eat your porridge or sleep in your bed? I mean is what you're doing worth emulating? Even better...
... would Goldilocks train like you do?
The great Joe Friel points out in Fast After 50...
... "that very strenuous exercise was an aerobic capacity preserver."
In other words, keep kicking arse regularly if you want to keep kicking arse forever.
Use it or lose it.
In Chapter 4, he goes into great detail of the benefits of intense workouts and is quick to point out that too much, is too much and will lead to breakdowns.
Says Joe, I'd prefer to see a mix of an individually reasonable amount of moderate-effort volume along with some high-intensity training.
Plus this, point the finger of blame for loss of performance with age at training intensity, not volume.
That's where Goldilocks comes into play. We have to find the right mix, balanced with our lifestyle and goals.
What does a reasonable amount of moderate-effort and some high-intensity look like to me and you?
Here's one way to look at it, and I'll into this in greater detail in the soon to be release training app and book titled, RaceDay Ready, 10 weeks to speed.
Take your max hours available in a given week, and put 80% of that in the moderate-effort category. 20% will then be dedicated to hucking up a lung.
I love lung hucking so much (kind of) that I split it between 2 days. The rest is reasonable.
This is a general fitness approach. As A races approach that changes a bit. But, in general, I never skip my lung hucking and I rarely stray from the 80/20.
