HOW MUCH LONGER CAN THE TUR D' FRAWNZ HANG ON?
WHAT A PARADOX! The biggest bike race in the world is by far the most boring. Sure it has drama, but it takes 3 weeks to play out. Of course it has the best athletes, but it takes 20 days of attrition and luck. They're trying to remain relevant...
... while gripping hard on tradition.
It's the fringes where we have real action and excitement.
Certainly, this year, for me, has been a big come to Merckx moment with races that are novel...
... requiring a much larger skill set.
Drafting is nice,
drafting on gravel and sand is rad.
Carving tarmac is swell,
carving on a banked dirt berm is exhilarating.
Single track is fun,
single track on drop bars is trickylicious.
Mixed surface racing is bomb!
Of the 3 biggies, the Vuelta has been the most exciting. They've had to be different, to stand out. Now they are on the leading edge of stodgy...
... I think they can do better.
Imagine.
One bike.
A stage race.
One, maybe two, tire choices.
Every day a different type of terrain.
Now that, that my PEDAlposse, would be a helluva race and give us...
... and helluva champion.
