    THE VISION BORED

VISION WHILE RACING isn't everything, but it's right up there with oxygen. We gotta breathe, we gotta see...

    ... to move forward.

I was thinking about that today while zipping down a twisty trail.

If I let my eyes start to focus on what's up close...

... my speed drops and I become much more reactive.

    When I'm focused far ahead...

... I go much faster, slipping into a state of flow and things are magically easier.

The thing I was thinking about was my vision board.

Mulling over the things already accomplished, as well as what is in the works.

The vision board seems to work the same way...

... focusing on the outcome, not how I'm going to get there.

Some of you may be thinking Dude is nuts,
others nodding your heads That's right.

Either way, I'll leave you with this thought from King Salomon...

... Where there is no vision, the people perish.

    TUCK AND ROLL!

AERO. The term is like a science fiction blob that oozes it's way into everything, eventually killing everything in sight and taking over the world...

... with no end of it's pervasiveness in site.

    Can we escape the creepiness?

The thingaboutitis, once we go slip down the aero tube...

    • positioning
    • equipment
    • apparel

... it's almost impossible to stop.

That list falls short of the whackiness...

    • hands on the mtb fork crowns at Leadville
    • hydration bladders stuffed in front of jersey
    • dropper seat post for bombing road descents

    ... which actually works.

I was thinking about that this morning as I crested The Wall, about 15 seconds behind the leaders.

Pedaling till I was spun out...

    • butt hooked on end of saddle
    • hands next to the stem
    • chin on the Wahoo
    • elbows in
    • knees in

... I assumed the position (I'm not a butt on seat tube believer).

Would I, could I catch before the bottom?

Being on my lessthanaero gravel bike...

    • spun out with gravel gears
    • rolling shallow depth road wheels
    • rockin' a well ventilated KASK helmet

... I needed every aero advantage I could get.

After rolling up on the 3 in between the two leaders...

... we rotated, taking short and speedy pulls.

    It took forever to catch,
all the way to the final curve.

I'm already thinking about next week...

    • actual aero helmet
    • clean shave on the legs, face, arms(?)
    • and, yeah, gonna bust out the Speedsuit

... what else I can do to improve my aeroness.

On my previous road bike, I clocked 51 mph...

    ... today's set up shows 47.4 mph.

    Tuesday can't some soon enough.

    CUI BONO?

THERE ARE A LOT OF DEALS that get cut on the race course. Some are obvious, some hidden. Many between competitors...

... for money, glory and pride.

    The worst deal of all?

Well, that depends on Cui bono?...

    ... Who benefits?

    Deals between competitors kindasuck, but...

    • hang on for camera glory
    • work to stay in break
    • straight cash

... we can usually tell who benefits,
    and who pays.

    No, the most insidious deals...

    • staying up late
    • backing off the finishing sprint
    • starting the new diet "tomorrow"

... are the ones we cut with ourselves.

    Because nobody benefits,
    'cepting our competitors.

    MY INSANE CULT

FEW OF US HAVE BEEN TO AN AA MEETING, but we've seen TV/movie version many times. Hi, I'm Todd and...

    ... I'm an endurance junkie.

    Hi Todd.

When we come clean with the general population, Today I...

    • swam 10,000 yards
    • rode for 5 hours
    • ran 20 miles

    ... they think we're crazy.

    We're not.

    The adrenaline rush of ...

    • 60 miles an hour in nothing but lycra
    • the swimmers blue mind
    • the runner's high

    ... we need that hit.

    Regularly.

    This risks we take...

    • sending it down the mountain
    • running along into the cold, dark night
    • impossibly holding our breath one more length

... would freakout any life insurance company.

These sensations of pushing well beyond normal, reasonable, safe...

... are often all that's keeping us stable.

In all sincerity, because the allure of the lottery and dulling our senses with substances is so very tempting and tragically treacherous...

    ... stay dangerous my friends.

    The sane kind.

    TODAY WAS A ROUGHIE

SOME BIG TRAINING DAYS are better than others. The reasons are myriad. Which means when it goes sideways...

... it's up to us to figure it out.

    Like today.

I knew it was going to be a big day...

    • 7 hrs
    • 87 miles
    • 10,500' of vert

    ... on Monday.

There are only 8 weeks to get our Leadville legs, and me and Let's Go need(ed) to do some simulation.

    For me,
    today,
    I just never got comfortable.

Never felt that feeling of being on top of the pedals and...

... smoothly moving like a Singer sewing machine.

It was much more like a broke down pumpjack one might see in the hot and dusty oil fields of Bakersfield...

... in desperate need of lube and love.

    Clunk.
    Clunk.
    Clunk.

I've narrowed it down to a few things...

    • going too deep on Thursday after solid Tuesday and Wednesday
    • rolling the gravel wheels vs road wheels on Friday's BRO ride
    • hitting the legs with resistance Sunday-Thursday

... and I should know better.

    I'm gonna add to that...

    • probs too much tire pressure
    • def hotter today than our last attempt
    • carrying a third bottle to be safe on hydration

    ... some I can control, some I can't.

In the end, I think it really comes down to not being sufficiently recovered.

On a positive note, given the fatigue level...

... we averaged 12.7 mph with zero drafting over a similar profile to Leadville.

    Not bad.
    Not great.
But, we can work with that.

Oh, and I'm feeling quite extra speedy on the downhills.

    Time for...

    • In-N-Out burger, fries and shake
    • some good sleep
    • and a day off

... to set the pins up to be knocked down next week.

    THAT TOPSECRET SECRET

THE IDEA OF A PUBLIC DECLARATION is not new. Lots of people have proclaimed they will accomplish X goal and gone on to do just that...

    ... because it works.

    There is a hitch.

    The haters,
    the perceived haters,
    hating the idea of haters.

There are plenty of famous athletes who have made the call and fallen flat on their face...

    ... sometimes by knockout.

Which is why most of keep our plans secret,
    denying ourselves the power therein.

    I'm onboard with that.

There is also power in keeping our intentions unknown.

    Wherein lies another hitch.

If we're posting our stats with the Strava lords,
that might be considered a passive-aggressive statement.

    Which begs the question...

... if we're keeping our mouths shut, do we keep our training private?

Personally, I'm open book on that, except for my top secret racing agenda which scrawled in code...

    ... on my vision board.

    IMAGINE THAT!

WHEN WE WERE CHILDREN, can ya even remember that?, we had tremendous imaginative powers. From games to friends to travel to faraway places...

    ... our lives were boundless.

    What happened?

    Did reality set in?

Did we set conditions on our dreams?

Did some kind old bag of wind tell us not to have our heads in the clouds?

    The thingaboutitis...

... when we register for an event or race, all bets are off.

    We've already imagined...

    • the trainging
    • the equipement
    • the travel and accomodations

    ... to start.

More importantly, if we're really on our A game, and you and I are!...

... we can see the finish line, and exactly how we'll be at that moment.

    Which isn't child's play.

    It's actually...

    • life
    • business
    • relationships

... how doers get it done!

As I'm writing this I'm reminded of the gloves I wore today...

and the shirt I'm wearing right now

This is gonna be a total marketing faux pas because we're neverever supposed to make too many offers, but...

    EMBRACING THE BURN, DAILY/OFTEN

WE'VE ALL FELT THE BURN. Some of us love it, some of us hate it. No matter where we are on the spectrum...

... the burn is coming for us.

    Is it minimizable?

    Maybe.

If yesterday is any indicator, I may have stumbled upon something.

For the last few weeks, I've been steadily increasing my ATG air squats.

From reps of 10 to reps of 30.

If you haven't done them lately, or ever...

    • standing
    • to full "ass to grass"
    • to standing

... it's quite a shock to learn our trusty bottom half may not be as durable as we think.

    When I started 10 burned,
    then 20 really burned...

... the last 5 of 30 were a massive struggle.

Back to yesterday's hammerfest, when the burn came on it was like my body saying...

... Oh, we're gonna burn now. Buckle up buttercup, I've got this.

Rather than pulling the plug at the onset of burn, I embraced it and powered on.

    Best I've felt in weeks/months.

Now, I'll be the first to admit it could just be that I was supertapered going into last weekend's BWR UT and I might just be having a good response to the taper followed by the 3.5 hours of racing across the high desert.

But, even if that's the case...

... the burn of 30 ATGs feels so good.

    Gonna keep upping it,
    apparently 100 is a thing.

(yes, on top of split squats and probably bringing back box jumps)

I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE TOOK ME BACK

IT'S REALLY HARD TO LET GO of something we love. The fear we won't get it back is legit. Yet, the opportunity of enjoying something new...

    ... is real, and tantalizing.

    The known vs the unknown.

Once we move on, that thing we left behind might...

    • forget about us
    • reject our return
    • change and move on

    ... it's risky.

No, Surfergirl didn't leave me or vice versa.

    But!...

... I did leave my beloved TMWC (Tuesday Morning World Championships) for another ride: Wednesday Worlds.

The main reason, and it's very valid, waking up at 5am and rolling out in the cold, dark, pre-dawn was leaving me almost worthless for work the rest of the day.

The lesser reason, I was thinking the blazing intensity of WW would be a better work out.

Well, a funny thing happened when a downloaded the Tuesday vs WW data...

    • significantly more time above threshold and VO2 max
    • much higher average and normalized power
    • and, the best, all my pals were there

... to smack me in the face!

For sure, it helped that the sun was up when I rolled out.

And, I was putting down power on the road vs battling dust, rocks and terrain.

    The fellas were all welcoming...

... probably because they knew they'd dump me up The Wall and send me home with a good lycra whipping.

Gawd, I've missed this ride and these awesome cats.

    GIVE ME 10 WEEKS

HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE to get into top shape for an A race is a question we'd all like answered. For an Olympian, it might be years. For us...

... we might have a few months.

    Or less.

Depending on when we sign up, and the vagaries of life.

But, let's just say we are fitter than most,
    not as fit as some.

    Then our focus will be...

    • long climbs or power climbs
    • slogs into the wind or a million turns
    • finishing in ones and two or a ripping bunch sprint

... more on race specific training.

Given a good baseline of fitness, my general rule is...

    • our bodies
    • our equipment
    • our travel and logistics

... it takes 10 weeks to really sharpen the saw.

For me, aiming for Leadville on 8.15.26, I've got time...

... but, no time to waste.

    And, so it begins.

    THE PREPARATION/EXPECTATION EQUATION

DECONSTRUCTING OUR RECENT PERFORMANCE is critical for improvement. The longer we wait, the foggier our recollection. Details we were sure of...

... become memories full of bias.

    It's natural.

Who wants to remember what went wrong, when we can glory in all that went right?

Other than screwing up yet another sprint for the line, nothing really went sideways for me at BWR UT.

And, if I'm being honest, Billy tested my legs on the overpass coming into to town. Whether or not he knew it, and I stayed glued through the the pain...

    ... I was hurting.

There are a few things that went really right...

    • The chef's pasta the night before at Chef Alfredo's, with Danny and Lisa, was delish and just what I needed.
    • The AirBNB I found at the last minute - a 3-bedroom house was perfect and the beds wonderful.
    • The 8:30 start was a little too late to skip breakfast, so I went with my gut and mowed down a couple of chocolate Entenmann's donuts, half an apple, and a couple of cups of my trusty mushroom hot chocolate.
    • I picked up Skratch Super High Carb and ran 6 scoops in my 2-liter pack and another 3 in one bottle.
    • To stay ahead of cramps, I ate a Salt Stick chews.
    • For the bike set up,
      • Ceramic Speed chain held up really well to all the dust, even after getting doused with cold water by Smitty at the final aid station.
      • The tire pressure was pretty low, 22lbs in back 20lbs up front. I rimmed out a few times over the random chunky stuff while in a paceline. That's always risky. But, I also felt like I was much more comfortable than other competitors who dropped off the group over time.

    ... the last was mindset.

    Preparation vs Expectation.

I came in pretty rested having spend the previous 2 weeks on my MTB in Park City.

Because of the altitude, it was difficult to put in hard efforts of any meaningful time. Hours in the saddle were solid, but even a lot of that was spent ripping down hill.

I'd give me preparation a B, which was fine for a B race.

Knowing that, my expectations were quite low.

    Here's the point...

... poor preparation with high expectations is a formula for frustration and a crummy day on course.

    Whereas...

... awesome preparation with low expectations always makes for a fun race and often surprising outcomes.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

IF THINGS AREN'T ENDING UP as we'd like them to, the obvious thing to do would be dong something different. But, that can be a hard pill to swallow because...

    ... we're comfy and don't wanna change.

    Hope isn't a strategy.

    Or, a tactic.

So, even though I was hoping I'd be able to fend off the change with a few hundred meters to go at BWR UT, the mofo I'd been working with for the last 30 miles...

... stuck a shiv in my back.

There was nothing I could do.

    Had no answer.

Surfergirl, bless her little beating heart, could see I was frustrated with myself and...

... accidentally twisted the buried blade.

What are you going to do about it?

I think it was an innocent, honest, loving, caring question due to the fact that she's seen me frustrated with something...

... then, draw up a solution and make it happen.

Truthfully, does it really matter if close out a racing effort by taking some cat on the line who I may never see again?

    Not even.

What matters, to me, is that I execute the plan.

    In this case...

... having something left at the end, to rip a fast finish.

The kool kids call that durability.

I call it having your shift together when it counts, which means I'll be needing to...

... wrap up long rides with sprints that sting.

ARE YOU EXCITED FOR THE RACE TOMORROW?

THE NIGHT BEFORE any race is not a normal night. No matter how practiced we are there's always something different to our routine. Sometimes...

... we just make it up.

    Why not?

    It might work,
    or not.

Surfergirl keeps asking me are you excited?

    I wanna say yes,
and I know I will be tomorrow...

... about a millisecond after we start.

    Until then,
my energy tends to be low.

    Not depressed low.

    Hybernation low.

    Lethargic.

    Slothy.

Trying to amp me up, she asks...

... have you looked at reg to see who's going to be there?

That's the kind of thing that...

    • if I glanced at it now
    • the night before the race
    • when I'm trying to chill and sleep early

... would def keep me up and tossing and turning.

    No, that's not my agenda.

    I prefer to...

    • lose all hope
    • ditch all desire
    • punt all pretense

... and shut 'er down with my favorite pint.

    NOSTALGIA

WE ALL STARTED this endurance journey somewhere, likely not where we are today. Introduced by a friend, sometimes on purpose, others inadvertently. While we may change locales, and the friends become distanced…

    … we’re still here.

    In the game.

We may have the opportunity to go back to where it all started.

    For me, it was…

    • my roommate’s bike
    • a finagled purchase of my own
    • secrets of sprinting revealed by Bret, who raced track nationally for San Jose Bicycle Club

    … in Provo, UT.

    I rearranged my classes…

    • to start as early as possible
    • so I could ride every afternoon
    • before cruising the library to cruise the cubicles in search of a “study” partner.

… because I had priorities to attend to.

Today I hit a climb I’d always wanted to check out, Cascade Springs, but it was a battered gravel road back in the day.

Now, it’s pristine pavement all the way up over 8000’

Followed by a plummeting descent that is as magical now as it was 40 years ago.

    I’ve moved,
but, I never really moved on…

… and, I’m quite okay with that.

THE TRUE PRICE OF FREE ADVICE

A WHILE BACK, I connected with the COO of a well-known bike brand. We were working on a collaboration at the time. I asked him for some...

... advice on what we're doing over here.

    Today, we met for lunch.

Looked at from now to the end of the year,
the objectives I want to accomplish,
    what I think is possible.

    No different than...

    • capabilities
    • weaknesses
    • peak seasonal events

... planning the race season with a coach.

    After some yummy tacos,
    and back of napkin calculations...

... we came up with a solid methodology to implement.

    Like any great coach,
my friend made it so simple to understand...

... and gave me the confidence to go for it.

I was prepared to pay a minimum of $1,000.

In the end it could be way more expensive than that...

    ... if I don't take action.

It could cost me 100s of 1000s.

ARE SUFFERING AND EPICCING TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN?

WE ALL KNOW that group workouts are torturous by nature. It's not a secret. Yet, we continue to show up beating after beating because...

    ... suffering loves company.

Alone, for most of us, is no good.

    We won't see it through,
we'll ease up when we should be hardening up.

The bonds we end up forming are often unbreakable...

    ... we're in agony together.

Suddenly people who barely knew each other are fist bumping and ready for the next one.

    What's the opposite bondforming experience?...

... when we're pushing geographic boundaries together.

    Like today.

It wasn't the 90 minute climb topping out at 9160'.

    Nope.

It was the 60 minutes of downhill...

    • ripping through the trees
    • sliding around gorgeous berms
    • jumping rocks and roots and stumps

... feeling like we were cheating life.

    Epiccing, like suffering, loves company.

We set off in search of adventures that will push beyond the comforts or riding around the block...

... the unknown and undiscovered beckoning to be shared.

    COOCOO FOR CLIMBING

IF WEIGHTED SQUATS are a lot better than air squats, is climbing a lot better than riding on the flats? And, if climbing is better...

... is climbing with a weighted vest mo' bettah?

    Things one wonders.

    And takes to extremes.

I remember backintheday, rolling out with 100oz hydration pack on my back and 2 large waterbottles filled with sand.

    It seems so silly now,
    almost as all the ruckers.

On a bike we can measure power.

    So, we know.

We know we don't need to stress our backs with extra weight or stupid add ons...

... we can just pedal faster.

    Velocity X Force - Power

    Which taken a step further...

... climbing aint gonna train us any better than flats.

We gotta put out the power.

There is a caveat, if we like...

    • climbing big mountains
    • ripping punchy stuff
    • pounding the flats

... our bodies will adapt and become more efficient at the one we love and gravitate towards.

    Me personally?

    I'm coocoo for climbing,
    and bananas for bombing.

POP TART POWERED, BEE STUNG... ATHLETE unINTELLIGENCE

SOMETIMES, we just gotta change it up. Do something different just fer fun. Go against...

    ... conventional wisdom.

I thought it had been a good week...

    • 177 miles
    • 17:26 hours
    • 20951' of vert

... given I'd been knocked down by a 24 hour bug.

    Mostly in the dirt,
    mostly with friends.

Yet, every single ride Strava's Athlete Intelligence...

... scored it as recovery or recovery and endurance.

Apparently, the AI couldn't account for the fact this sea leveler was suffering at 7000-10,000 elevation.

    Rolling out this morning...

    • a few scoops of Envy
    • 4 pop tarts
    • 1 Carbs gel

    ... I grabbed what I had + 100 ounces of water.

While I hoped to put down some power, since all I'd done was "recovery and endurance" rides...

    ... I knew the truth.

    Leaving with a simple plan,
ride until I ran out of food and water.

It was an epic day in the mountains...

... topped off with a bee sting in the gut a few miles from home base.

    Memorable.

    THE ADVENTURE

SOMETIMES, the road really is better than the inn. We realize that whatever we are aiming for may not be all that great, but...

... putting in the work gives outsized returns.

    Gratitude blooms.

    Like today.

My pal Charles charts out this loop...

    • 32 miles
    • 4700' of vert
    • topping out at 10,000'

    ... which seems really cool.

Until we hit our first massive fallen tree and bushwhack around it.

    Then, patches of snow,
    too long to ride.

    Followed Puke Hill.

    The view...

    • The Great Salt Lake to the west
    • Park City to the East
    • Not a soul around

    ... stunning.

Somehow the goals seem weak, lacking...

    ... when beauty abounds.

If we'll just stop to look.

WHEN TRAINING ISN'T ACCORDING TO PLAN

THE BEST LAID PLANS can go sideways for a variety of reasons. I'm not gonna list 'em since I don't want to poison your mind and have you...

    ... manifesting awfulness.

'Cause I'm questioning just that about myself.

    Did I manifest...

    • 3 days off at I Do Epic
    • riding with friends short on time
    • puking my guts out last night after a miserable 70 minute ride

... or, is it just life?

    Doesn't matter too much,
except part of my GrandMasterRipOnRaceDay plan...

... was a massive training week this week to make up for last week
and leave me slightly buried for BWR next week.

    I consulted AI all night...

    • possibly caused by using pure table sugar on my rides
    • hydration via room temp peppermint tea
    • a few Tums

... while Surfergirl laughed at me and secured the remedy.

Arose after 10 hours, feeling a lot better.

Energy seems good enough to day...

... to meet up with the local slayers.

The prudent thing would be to skip the meet up,
    spin at most, or sleep...

    ... a proper adjustment.

    But, screw it...

    ... I've got plans, too.

    GETTING HIGH

TRAINING AT SEA LEVEL is no way to prepare for high elevation activities. Sure we have extra oxygen to go hard, which is always nice. But, it'd be even nicer...

... to be able to rip when high.

    Which begs the question...

... why am I working so darn hard, putting out so little power?

    Nah, that's obvious.

    Kinda.

90 minutes into the ride today,
we'd been ripping up Big Mountain Pass (f'real).

    Challenging?
    Yes.

    Wheezing?
    Yes.

    Gapped?
    Indeed.

    Here's the rill dill...

... even though the power is relatively low,
    the breathing is labored.

    Which presents a realhonesttogoodness truth...

    • breathing too hard
    • not thinking 100% clearly
    • focusing on staying on pace

... it's hard to stay on top of the hydration and nutrition at altitude significantly above our normal.

We, me especially, gotta force it.

Another important consideration at high elevations...

... it's better to pace on HR than PWR.

    SETTLING...

THE IDEA OF SETTLING, for most of us, is repulsive. We'd never do that because our standards are too high...

    ... or, so we think.

    Because we don't know better.

    Welp,
    today I realized
    I've totally been settling.

While we do have trails to ride near home...

    • skinny single track with rain ruts
    • weeds elbow high
    • punch climbs

    ... it's nothing like Utah..

Today, outside of Kamas was incredible.

My pals, PViddy and TimmyV, had been telling me it was great up here.

    • smooth, fast and flowy
    • adorned with greenery and trees
    • berms so perfect the suspension compresses as you no-brake it

    ... expertly engineered trials.

    A GOOD BREAK

TAKING TIME OFF can be restorative. Sometimes it's on purpose, other times its an unplanned forced situation. Either way...

... we're anxious to get back at it.

    Like right now.

Being that I was committed to be all in at the biz conference...

... I skipped the last few days.

    Including the typical epic Saturday.

Everything feels really good except my gut, which is feeling quite bloated...

... after lots of good food.

I suppose that's part of the anxiety, not...

    • the drop in fitness
    • the packed on pounds
    • the connecting with the crew

... the sensation of being a caged animal.

    Some might caution,
    don't over do it.

A fair warning if working back from an injury.

But, this belly is yellin' at me,
    get after it,

    AI DRIVEN?

AI could be all it's cracked up to be, if we can only learn how to use it to our benefit. But, new things can be...

    ... a challenge to learn.

    Even scary.

One of the take aways on day 3 of I Do Epic was regarding AI,
and it got me thinking about racing...

... because as we say, Racing is life!.

My grand takeaway is AI's ability to deliver what we are looking for has much to do with regarding the prompts.

For example, knowing what you know about me...

... create a training program as if you were Javier Sola

Just like us at a race,
AI needs its head screwed on straight in order to deliver.

And a proper prompt is the starting point.

    Making it human...

... what is the main prompt driving our training?

    WE CALL IT SPOOKED

THE UNMISTAKABLE ENERGY of the start line can be overwhelming for the uninitiated. We feel it the moment we arrive at an event, and when we line up the vibe can take us...

... from confident and courageous to literal shaking.

    Plans melting.

Rather than the controlled missile launch we'd imagined, we are overcome by the complete chaos of undirected explosions.

    And, that's okay,
until we want a different outcome.

On Day 2 of I Do Epic, we spent much the day in a massive barn learning how a master horse trainer teaches and guides the beasts with energy vs force.

Demonstrating the animal's sensitivity to each other in the herd as well as to us humans, as we approached and worked with the horses.

Thankfully, the inanimate endurance tools we depend on...

    • bicycles
    • helmets
    • shoes

... cannot sense our moods or energy.

Can you imagine mounting a spooked bicycle?

I've often wondered how I am able to reach a place of calm and certainty with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of my "closest friends"...

... so close to losing it?

I don't have a good answer other than...

    • a safe race
    • an unleashing of the training put in
    • finishing knowing there was nothing left in the tank

    ... experience and expectation.

But, the old cowboy did share one nugget that really resonated with me...

... We create what we anticipate.

    START WHERE YOU ARE

TRAVEL BRINGS IT'S OWN CHALLENGES when it comes to maintaining our fitness. Will we have time, will there be space, do we have the equipment...

... will we even want to?

    Have the energy?

When I signed up for I Do Epic Live in the hinterlands of Idaho, I figured we'd be starting early and ending late so...

    • 27 hours
    • 380 miles
    • 27000' of vert

... I made sure I'd put in a large training block prior.

Taking a break made sense, but...

... a funny thing happened when I woke up.

I had two and half hours to kill,
while situated on the shore of the Snake river,
with a lovely and lonely gravel road echoing my vibe.

    My original plan was out...

    • a long walk
    • a ton of push ups
    • a million air squats

... a quick and glorious spin was in.

I WANTED TO STOP SO BAD

GETTING AFTER IT for a long period of time can be a beautiful thing, if we are in the right mindset and our bodies are prepared...

... and we're used to it.

    Even addicting.

But, if our head's not into it,
    our bodies not prepped,
    it's been a while...

    ... quitting looks might tasty.

    Like today.

There we were, riding up one of the most beautiful climbs in Utah, the Alpine Loop...

    • few cars on the road
    • perfect spring weather
    • forever views up into the snowpack

... a coupla dudes riding a good fast tempo.

    And, about 45 minutes in...

... I wanted to pull over.

Have a smoke, errr bite of my bar,
dip my toes in the stream.

It would have been so easy,
    and lovely.

Which is why I didn't do it.

Because I know from experience pushing through these moments is...

... what it takes to finish anything strong.

Well, and the reward of a chocolate chip cookie at Sundance...

... would be that much sweeter.

    THE OTHER CROSSTRAINING

IF WE'RE IN A RELATIONSHIP of any kind we're most likely going to be exposed to activities which don't perfectly align with...

    ... our primary objective.

    Got it?

    Yeah, we get it.

    The thingaboutitis...

... it's usually more than okay.

    Surfergirl loves to hike.

Any time we're roadtripping and I'm in a hurry to get to the beddown...

... she's plotting a once in a life time hike.

    Like today,
    just after 6pm
    3 hours from our destination...

... we absolutely had to hike Kolob canyon for no less than 2 hours!

Yes, that's an explanation point because...

... old diesels need their beauty sleep

Her "reward" for this detour is me stretching out while she drives, which I'm pretty sure...

... she purposely fakes like she's tired and unnecessarily jerks the wheel so I'll get behind it.

While I have to admit the hike was outstanding, and served to remind me that I should do some regular hiking to prepare for the potential to be hiking at Leadville...

...it's  pretty clear I have not properly trained her on driving in a relaxing and soothing manner nor bowing down to the needs of her old man's sleep.

    BECAUSE I ASKED...

MEMORIAL DAY IS A BUSY ONE around here. All kinds of people out enjoying the day: runnin, bikin, swimmin, surfin, paddlin...

    ... things were chaotic.

    I got a late start.

Preferring to get some work knocked and start prepping the van for our road trip...

... I slipped out just past noon.

There is a steep hill above a picturesque beach that attracts locals, nonlocals and everyone in between.

At the top, I saw an older woman lugging two chairs for her and her ancient father.

Normally, I'd just wiggle around them and the rest and go on about my day...

    ... but I remembered.

Hi there, can I help you with those chairs?

    Oh, yes, please.

Leaned my bike on a palm tree.

Let's go down a little bit more, where it's a little flatter.

    C'mon dad, over here.

    This looks pretty good.

    Thank you.

    No problem.

How did you know we needed help, nobody else noticed?

Oh, I prayed I'd be useful today.

With that, I was off on a lovely tour of the southern part of our county...

... pavement, gravel roads and single track.

You're probably thinking Nice virtue signal Todd...

... to which I'll say, thinking of others is not my default or my strong suit.

I have to work at getting my heart to be fully functional.

    THE RANDOMNESS OF PROGRESS

NICHING DOWN is a legit way to go about maximizing results. We study the experts, learn all we can, put it into practice. The goal is...

    ... supreme mastery.

But, is narrow and deep the only way to get it done?

    The best way?

Personally, I think I've learned more studying endurance athletes and coaches from other sports than I have focusing on bike racing.

Maybe, probably, there is more literature and research available.

Here are a few of my favorites

    • running - Born To Run, Christopher McDougall
    • triathlon - anything by Phil Maffetone
    • swimming - Total Immersion Method, Terry Laughlin
    • natural fitness - Natural Born Heroes, Christopher McDougall

... because they introduced me to new ways of thinking about endurance and fitness.

Bringing in randomness to our experience...

    • events
    • people
    • travel

... can deliver game-changing progress hacks.

If we'll just open our ears, eyes, hearts.

    AFTER TAKING SEVERAL READINGS

SIMULATING OUR 'A' EVENTS months in advance can be quite revealing, in bad...

    ... and good ways.

    Once, isn't enough.

    Every weekend is too much.

It's not a damned if we do,
    damned if we don't situation.

    More like a...

    • damn?
    • damn!
    • hot damn!

    ... outcome.

With that in mind I turned to Grok to help me assess today's simulation because...

    • what happens if I cut ballast?
    • what workouts would improve my time?
    • are there supplements that aid lung function at altitude?

... AI is damn fine when it comes to crunching numbers.

Because I'm a true and proud supernerd...

    • 2 previous attempts in last 7 years
    • body weight on those days
    • power numbers as well

... I have the data, going back years.

    I put Grok to work...

    • I can improve
    • I'm in a pretty good place already
    • This is gonna be a heckuva lotta fun

... and came out with what I already sensed.

Grok thinks I can beat my previous PR,
    which seems absolutely ludicrous...

... mainly because I have a lot of higher value things I want to accomplish this summer.

This is a typical use of AI for me...

    • confirm/test/explore what's possible
    • learn how to do things I can't figure out
    • assist in leveraging my tiny helmet covered bean's processing power

... are you using AI to evaluate and make moves?

As the great Wille Nelson sings...

... After taking several readings I'm surprised to find my mind's (and body) still fairly sound.

    IT'S A LONE WOLF'S WORLD

NO MATTER HOW MANY friends are planning to do the A event with us, regardless of how many weekends we link up to train together...

... the bulk of our efforts are alone.

    Unseen.

By nearly everybody, except that neighbor who we pass by at the same...

... godforbidden time each dark morning.

    We're on the hunt...

    • miles
    • skills
    • fortitude

    ... for more.

And even when we do link up, if we're truly committed...

... we might breakup, or off.

For example, I'm committed to ride a spritely tempo between all the worthy climbs tomorrow...

... where I'll move into the bottom to mid-threshold.

Because that's gonna be my pace at the A race,
and I've really got to train it now,
    to maintain it then.

So, yeah, 7 miles up the climb I'll probably be alone...

... just like I'll most likely be on raceday.

Which is why I'm working on this jersey to where in in Leadville.

Personally, I feel like an inspirational, personalized jersey is good for...

    ... a 1-2% increase in performance.

If you're of the same persuasion...

    • super aero jersey
    • amazing imported Italian fabrics
    • no minimum order required, make just 1

    13 WEEKS SHOULD BE ENOUGH

AT SOME POINT, the training for the A event has gotta get real. Sure we have our base miles just because we are base-ically addicted, but...

... that's not gonna cut it.

    Gotta get specific.

As of this moment, I'm 13 weeks out from starting the Leadville Trail 100.

    It'll be my 8th time.

While I know the drill, I also know...

    ... I'm nowhere near ready.

Haven't done an hour long climb...

    ... since I don't know when.

Haven't ridden over 5 hours since October.

Haven't ridden my MTB more than twice a week in ages...

    ... haven't
    haven't
    haven't
    haven't
    haven't.

    Equally overwhelming and energizing...

    ... the challenge is elephant-sized.

And, I'm gonna attack it one mile at a time.

    STRETCH GOALS

STRETCHING seems to go in and out of popularity. When, how long, which moves are a essential...

... and that's not counting yoga and pilates.

    Where to start?

    That's a good question.

I'm no expert, which is why I check in with my physical therapy pal, Scott,  from time to time.

    Mostly when I'm miserable
    or injured.

    Which got me thinking.

The last couple of days my bike fit felt like it had changed...

    ... which is impossible, right?

    Then, I thought...

... could my body have changed somehow?

Thinking back on my many visits with Scott...

... and how stretches had fixed various aches and debilitating pains.

It hit me like a ton of lycra!

    I haven't been stretching regularly,
    at all.

Got back at it this morning...

    ... dang, I'm stiff!

    But, guess what...

... the bike fit felt back to awesome.

Stretch goals are the kind that have us reaching to our limits to accomplish what seems nigh impossible...

    ... I like setting those.

    New/old stretch goal...

... stretch every night as part of my shutdown sequence.

THE VERY BEST PROS have mastered the basics. From techniques to tools, from sleeping to sprinting. They have it...

    FROM FLOOR TO CEILING

BUILDING FITNESS can appear to be a mystery to the uninitiated. For the reasons, holding onto it is illusive. And losing it...

    ... downright easy.

    It's a shame.

If the unwashed simply established a floor...

    • a minimum daily commitment
    • built over weeks
    • and months

... they'd find their ceiling to be nearly limitless.

Instead, they get the bug or come clean with their naked selves...

... and progress rapidly for a short season.

    Get thrown off track,
    and start over.

    We know different.

Our floor maybe is simple as getting outta bed and kitting up...

... knowing it's easy to get out the front door at that point.

After that, it's just a matter of raising the floor...

... to see how high we can fly.

Things I think about while riding zone two for 2 hours...

... because that was my floor today.

And, I always ride on Mondays.

PRISONS WE CHOOSE TO LIVE INSIDE

    >

HOW FAR SHOULD WE TAKE OUR BRO-SCIENCE?

ONCE WE FIGURE OUT the gear and products that work for our bodies, it's, honestly, just amazing. It fits. It works. And we stick with it...

    ... because we rip.

    Easy.

    We don't want to change.

That can be a problem if what we love goes out of stock or worse...

... out of production all together.

A few years back, when Wahoo acquired Speedplay they dumped my tried and MTB pedals.

    The Frogs.

Had I known, I'd have purchased at least 10 pair of pedals and probably 100 sets of cleats.

To my horror, I logged on and learned the sadsad news.

    No mas.

When I woke and realized I was out of my favorite carb mix today...

    • water
    • plain ol' sugar
    • and Liquid IV for flavor and electrolytes

... well, yeah, I took a stab a making my own.

    You should witnessed the...

    • disgust
    • concern
    • warnings

... from the crew when we stopped to refill our bottles midride.

I shared my mix was 4 tablespoons of sugar...

    • you're gonna get diabetes
    • go into a coma
    • die early

    ... I could only laugh.

Just what exactly do you think is in your favorite powder or gel?

I got the idea from an ultra-trail runner I follow on YouTube.

He'd wanted to experiment and discovered how sucrose...

    • quickly absorbed glucose
    • more slowly absorbed fructose

... breaks down in the small intestine.

    It's a 1:1 ration,
most high end mixes are 1:.8.

Ever look at the ingredients of what you're drinking?

My 4 very level tablespoons = 50 grams of carbohydrate.

But, isn't that gonna kill ya?

It's about the same as a can of Coke,
or a couple of candy bars.

    So, yes, it will absolutely...

    • crush our health
    • give us that orange with 4 toothpicks look
    • and lead to all kinds of degenerative diseases

... unless we are ripping and burning it up.

That 50 grams is about 50% of what I consume per hour...

    ... when getting after it.

How'd it work over 3 bottles?

    Flawlessly.

Gonna test full strength this week.

    This is bro-science...

... so take it with a literal and proverbial grain of salt.

16 years ago, my pal Dr. Jeff couldn't keep from...

    ... slobbering all over me.

    About gravel riding.

    You would love it.

    Seems kinda lame.

    Trust me.

    Tell me why.

Well, it'a a combination of two things you love: road and mtb.

    And it's fun?

    Oh yes!

It took me 5 years to finally see a signal...

    • steel
    • heavy
    • leather bags

... a lonely gravel bike on sale at the local bike shop.

I thought it was radical to ride the tires at such low pressure...

    • 38mm
    • 60 lbs
    • with tubes

... now I'm on tubeless carbon hoops, rolling 18 up front 20 in the back.

    So much has improved!

For the first year or more I rode gravel alone...

... like a lunatic in the wild.

It took 5 more years till a few of us were getting together...

... and another 3ish to do what we did today.

    STOP BEING MEDIUM

THERE'S A REASON so many of us struggle to improve. Especially the newest of us...

... doing all we can to hang on.

    Never improving.

I heard it said so well and succinctly today by one of my fave running coaches, the great Fred Duncan.

The question how much work we can survive in one session, it's...

    • hard
    • easy
    • hard, again

... how many high quality outputs can we stack over weeks and months and years?

If we aren't resting, active-recovering we can't go hard enough on our hard days to see any improvement...

... we become really excellent at medium.

    And, stay there.

Which is fine, if you're into that sorta thing.

    But, I know you're not.

    Which brings up today's ride...

    • 23 miles
    • ave HR 93
    • ave PWR 102

    ... we did the impossible.

I say impossible because it's nearly impossible to get a group of athletes together and not start pushing...

... we pulled it off by setting the tone ahead of time.

The BRO ride is a super easy conversational cruiser...

... because bros need bro time.

Before slaying it on the weekend.

    ZONE TWO MUCH

ANYBODY CAN RIDE ZONE 2. It's easy. Zone 1 is easy. Coasting is easier. The trick is...

    ... to stay there.

    For a long time.

The past few months I've been doing my Z2 on the mountain bike,
    on kinda steep trails.

    Not spinning,
    a lot of torque...

... then completely off when descending.

Which is somewhat easier than what I did today...

    • keeping on the pedals
    • with high cadence
    • limited coasting

... Zone 2 on mainly flat, with a few rollers.

    Turns out 2:80 spend doing...

    • 90 minutes  Z2
    • 31 min Z1
    • 9 min z3

... is it's own kinda hard.

    1261 calories burned ain't nothing.

The mental game to stay at a given pace and basically never stop pedaling...

    ... regardless of the terrain.

I know you zwifties are wanting to mock me,
and I'm totally down with how much harder
it can be on a trainer.

    I get it.

The real point is this kind of training...

... is extremely effective at building physical and mental endurance.

THE EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER OF MID-WEEK RACING

MID-WEEK RACING has been around for ages and continues to endure because it's great training, fun to bring the community together...

... and get in some ripping intensity.

400 showed up to race Over The Hump last night.

A very healthy number of age group competitors...

    ... ready to battle.

I've missed the last two seasons,
so it was exciting to finally make it out.

I entered Elite 45+ looking to see how I'd rate.

    Warming up,
I saw a lot of friends.

    But, I was missing one.

My pal Eric was senselessly killed last year while riding his bike early in the morning, by a druggy.

After a decade of racing together...

    • bro hugging each week
    • seeing his babies grow up
    • and turn into fine little racers

... there was a hole in my heart.

    On the start line,
    the energy was high,
    the confidence eager.

    We shot out.

I maneuvered leading into the first single track,
    thinking okay this feels right.

There was only one solid climb,
    20 minutes of redlining.

    From leading,
    to wheezing,
    to 7th.

    Ouch!

The downhill was a couple of miles long,
and it felt good - even PRd it.

Sliding out onto the double track,
    I could see 5th and 6th,
    and closed the gap.

Two of the three of us were pulling hard back to the finish line.

Just as we're about to hit the final single track before the finish,
we're caught by some of the guys we'd dropped.

    At the same time,
we enter the tight turns we merge with the Beginners and Sport racers.

    It's not pretty.

Some of us give the slower riders space,
    others mob through.

    I go from 5th to 8th.

    Frustrated.

Upset about getting beat by the dude who wasn't pulling with us.

    Finishing,
    I stormed off.

    Not my finest moment.

After a recovery drink and some spinning...

    • reveling in my anger
    • knowing it would motivate me
    • looking forward to some specific training

... I realized how great it is to be racing.

Once I'd changed into my tshirt and jeans, I had time to reflect...

    • we live in a free and prosperous country
    • have the time and energy for mid-week racing
    • I'm feeling 100% recovered from my TBI, while Eric is riding in the heavens and his family navigates life without him.

    ... and be extremely grateful.

    CONSISTENCY IS BORING AND...

THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF CHATTER on the interwebs regarding what happens by simply being consistent. What is often left out is the biggest battle...

    ... which must be won.

    Boredom.

That's what the naysayers are thinking as we head out into the morning sunrise doing the unfathomable.

Sure, it can be monotonous to do the same workout over and over.

But, we aren't newbs or drones and know how to counter that by mixing it up, and socializing with likeminded beasts.

    With unholy motivation we focus...

    ... on the rewards.

    Months and years later,
we're nothing like the person we started out as.

Consistency might look boring to an outsider, but...

    ... we know it's lethal.

    DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS

THERE'S DANGER just crossing the street. But, people do it and a lot more because it's part of life. We, on the other hand...

... like to raise the stakes.

    Ignoring the warnings.

For years, I have casually read the signs regarding mountain lions and rattle snakes on our local trails and all over the western US.

    In the process I've...

    • a close up encounter with a big cat
    • run over many sunbathing snakes
    • stared down coyotes

... had one real scare and many thrills.

The cat was the most shocking.

I thought I was seeing a large loping coyote way up the gravel road.

    Not uncommon.

    Keep going.

    Kept seeing as elevation changed.

Rounded a corner only to see a giant cat perpendicular to the road.

    Staring at me.

Didn't do what you're supposed to do...

    • stand your ground
    • make yourself look bigger

... back pedaled and ripped up a single track, braking to make the turn at the top.

Went back to that spot many, many times,
raced up that hill as fast as possible...

... never came close to needing to brake to make the turn at the top.

    That my friends is living.

    TIMING

TIMING IS EVERYTHING, and there is so much to be timed when it comes to racing. To time anything to perfection necessitates...

    ... starting very early.

    Ultimately, requiring less energy.

We saw this today at the Giro.

The winning sprinter producing fewer watts than 2nd or 3rd place...

    1. 1480w
    2. 1870w
    3. 1580w

    ... making it look easy(er).

Because he timed his acceleration perfectly.

Not unlike sprinting for the line, the great Scott Adams stated...

... the secret to success is energy management.

Which helped me lean into doing my best and most important work early in the day when I'm most alert and creative.

    What else...

    • workouts
    • relationships
    • spiritual exploits

... can we improve with better timing?

    BLAME IT ON THE DONUT

STAYING ON TOP OF THE RECOVERY is super easy to skip. Especially, if we are really on top of it...

    ... day after day.

    We're rested.

When the opportunity presents itself to overdo it...

    ... we do it.

    We think we'll be fine.

We aren't going to do die, but...

... we will be less than fine.

    Like today.

After shortchanging myself on sleep two nights in a row,
getting talked into more than easy spinning,
    skipping the hyper-ice sessions...

... all variables I couldashoulda controlled,
    I suffered today.

    The sting of ripping,
    felt stale and suffocating.

When looked back on the data...

    • on trails I've ridden
    • raced up
    • stomped

... I actually set some PRs.

The difference when between being fatigued vs fresh is stark...

    ... longfaced-droopy vs JUBILANT.

Eventually, I succumbed to the efforts,
pulling the plug halfway up a steepytechy...

... and limped to the donut shop.

Where, after a few moments and calories and water I miraculously...

    ... felt very fauxfresh!

    BRO!

ALL RACING AND TRAINING ain't the way to do it. The ubersuccessful connect with others on a deeper level, it's the glue we need...

... to help us hold it all together.

    Not the training and racing.

    Life.

Some say getting out and getting after is...

    ... cheap therapy.

    I won't argue with that.

Getting out, and away, for a conversational workout...

    ... can be life changing.

    Lifesaving.

    But, we already know that.

    Most of our friends don't,
    or don't make the time,
    or have the friendship.

Which got me out on the road way earlier than I wanted to today,
because I knew my pal had been traveling a ton,
and could squeeze in a ride.

    And got me thinking...

    • early start
    • easy terrain
    • all bikes welcome

... why not create a BRO ride?

    Details in the image.

    BEST EFFORTS OSCILLATE

DOING OUR BEST. We hear from the time we take our first steps, through our teens, into adulthood. Then we preach it...

... to anyone who will listen.

    Because it works.

As the great Tony Horton used to say on the P90X videos...

.. do your best, and forget the rest.

It's a legit way to live, except...

    ... our best oscillates.

We can get better at our best...

... is there anything more exciting than knowing that?

I found a fun features on Strava today.

The Best Efforts Power Curve has a little box we can check and...

    ... Show Estimated FTP.

The last 6 weeks I've been pretty dialed.

According to the app I've raced FTP 10 watts.

    The feedback is helpful.

    Knowing we can improve...

    ... is a devine gift.

    THIS OLD FOOT

    THIS OLD FOOT

    Aug 10, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

MY KNEE HAS BEEN BUGGING ME.  Coach looks at me and my feet and says Todd I've been telling you for years to get orthotics.  What are you waiting for?...

Heck if I know... to be crippled?  So dumb.

    Who should I see?

    Dr Chin, in Irvine.

Skipping past the issue of seeing a "Dr Chin" for my foot I hop on over to see him.

Instantly, I get why she recommends him.  His demeanor, intellect and experience are what we all hope for any time we need medical attention.  Even better, HE'S A BIKE RIDER TOO!

    He gets me, totally.

We talk about how feet work, the intelligent design of the human body.  It's no accident Todd.

I ask how he got into the foot business and he tells me he started out as an engineer for a defense contractor... got involved in a side hustle helping deaf kids hear... realized he'd be happier healing people than killing them.

All the while he makes casts of my feet from plaster.  He explains why plaster is so much better than standing on pressure points or laser scanning for the impressions.  He shows me what the finished product will look like in 10 days.

There's a story of man who became a World Champion simply by taking care of any injury right away.
Over time, his competitors all trained themselves through pain and out of the sport.
Eventually his long-term plan paid off.
I hope I'm not too late...
    to ride in his shoes.

    BEHIND THE COUNTER

    BEHIND THE COUNTER

    TODD BROWN

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A CHANCE BEHIND THE COUNTER AT THE LOCAL BIKE SHOP.  I don't try and get there, but in the course of conversation I'll hear Come over and take a look... such a sweet sound.

The reason for the invitation is I've asked a million questions and it just becomes easier to show me what they're looking at on their computer screen.  I'm not trying to wear the person down, I'm just curious as heck as to what's available to me and my conservative budget.

I really should resist the invitation because it nearly always ends up with me wanting something either they can't get or I don't want to spring for.

Tonight it was a beautiful aluminum "gravel" frameset.

    I said, I'll take it.
    He said, Sold out.
I said, Only on the West Coast.
He said, with a hesitant hiss, I'll call in the morning.

To be nice, he made that offer knowing that it's most likely sold out on the East Coast too but they just haven't updated the internal inventory.

Though I know the outcome is almost always the same, It's still a sweet feeling to be on that side of the counter.  Every now and then we find a gem.  So I'll keep asking, they'll keep inviting, I'll keep going.

WOULD IT MAKE SENSE TO CREATE A SPEC BIKE CATEGORY?  A racing category where everybody raced on the same limited spec bikes?  Something like this:  18lbs or more: metal frames, handle bars, seat rails, rims; 1 X drive train; a mixed surface bike good for road and gravel... something you could purchase for a couple a grand or less.

What if your bike race wasn't an arms race?
More of a Pinewood Derby race?
    Good idea?

THERE'S A LOT OF TALK LATELY ABOUT SOMEBODY TAKING CHARGE OF XYZ GROUP RIDE AND LAYING DOWN THE LAW.  It sounds a little harsh, so few people step up to do it.  I started having a chat before our weekly Tuesday morning ride, and now I invite someone each week to have the chat for me.

Passing the baton shares the responsibility and keeps us all engaged for the day we might be called upon.

I'm printing this out so I remember what to say, what's important.  Who knows, you might read it one day... for that, I thank you in advance.

It was not easy the first time,
    it was embarrassing,
    it's easy now,
because our ride is a lot better...

THE COLD, HARD GAZE NEVER CEASES.  It's not intimidating anymore, just menacing.  Always judging me: frail and weak, knowing I have no interest in our daily duel.

It's of my own doing.  I jammed her in the bathroom door so I couldn't get away, couldn't weasel out.  Any other place and... outta sight, outta mind.

She stands and waits, and I usually obey by hauling myself up and down 'till exhaustion sets in.

There are rewards.  I can do 1-2 more when my body weight is lighter; I feel strong when I sprint; I can still bunny hop when I need to; and I reckon it helps with the surfing.

Most mornings she's evil and cold,
    occasionally encouraging,
    that's why I love her.

THERE ARE THINGS YOU LEARN ALONG THE WAY, MAXIMS TO RIDE BY.  Eric quipped this nugget about 60 miles into an 80 mile ride, as the heat of the day peaked:

You can do anything with Dr. Pepper and a Snicker's bar.

I'd been thinking that very thing for at least an hour as I suffered trying to hang on to CV... just a little longer and you'll be to AM/PM in no time...

A blast of cold air hit me as I walked in.  Straight to the soda station.  42ounce cup full of ice and smothered in Doctor P.  Open wide.  Pour it down.  Fill it again.  Repeat.

The cold and sugar and caffeine
coursing through my limbs and core,
    like spinach in PopEye's arms...
    I can do anything.

WHAT HAS TO BE THE LONGEST STANDING RACE SERIES IN CALIFORNIA IS RIGHT HERE ON THE OC/LA COUNTY LINE.  I could be wrong, but I think it's been going uninterrupted for at lest 30 years, maybe 40.  I ventured on out there this week, about 28 years after my last run on the classic 4ish turn layout.

Imagine this:  a 2 mile loop, through a beautiful park, set aside just for bike racing on Tuesday nights.  No cars, no other park goers.  No lights.  No stop signs.  Just you and your bike and other fellow racers.

It was better than I remembered, because I distinctly recall these surly geese all over the place wandering onto the course just as we'd be winding up for the final sprint.  They've either moved on or been lassoed and sequestered.

Rebecca and the rest of the crew start things timely and run a proper race.  The road is in good enough shape - a few cracks, but swept clean of any glass or debris.

I'd like to say the packs have grown over the years, but they've shrunk.  That might be a good thing.  I remember 200-300 per week in the early part of the year as racers jockeyed for series honors.  The two lane road was wide enough, barely.

No geese + smaller fields = good place to test out racing

Tuesday we had plenty of room to maneuver.  I tried out the 40+ - SuperDave recommended that vs 1-2-3s after our unOFFICIAL TMWC that morning.  It was great to see a few familiar faces:  Mario, Charon and Kenny.

The USAC official that used to help out at the Great Park series was on hand to make sure it was all legit... these guys are so generous with their time.

Someone had given me a heads up that Monster would get a winning break at the end.  About 25 minutes in... did I mention you get to race for an entire hour!... AWESOMESAUCE... Mario and another guy got it going.  Right up until 2 laps to go they stayed 20-40 seconds ahead of us.  It was so fun to measure the distance, make the calculations, and wonder if they'd ever come back.

Afterwards, as the shadows lengthened and the breezed cooled I took a long easy spin around the course.  Mainly I thought of Andy and Marty Schmidt and how much fun we had back then as newlywed knuckleheads.

Who knew ELDO would still be going,
    and so would we OLDOs?

Bags we are making for the Series winners and anybody who wants to purchase one.

    TODD BROWN

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT A GOOD PANCAKE.  At just the right temperature just the right amount of crispiness, real melted butter and real maple syrup... well, is there anything better?

    Maybe.

The pancake flat ride around the Back Bay of Newport Beach was pretty darn awesome this afternoon.  While points inland seared, the coast was a moist 77 tempered by an easy breeze.

The route, if ya haven't done it, is a mostly car free, buttery smooth bike trail along a beautiful wildlife refuge my grampa tried to dredge for waterskiing way back when...

On a weekday, things are quite.
    Many birds, few people.
A place to glide and think and savor.
    Which I did.

    I rode by Grampa's place,
thought about our bike rides together,
    Facetimed Mom, his little girl...
    told her I love her.

    TODD BROWN

MY BUDDY IS A RACE PROMOTER.  He doesn't always see eye-to-eye with the highest level competitors.  I get it.  The top racers are tops because their committed and driven to win... that angst winners often have can spell trouble for a race promoters and the "regular folks" racing and riding at a lower level.

Invite 'em all to have fun,
    be respectful,
    ride hard.
    You can always uninvite 'em.
That's how we do it.  We make the invitation, often.  Rarely is the uninvitation ever extended because the expectation has been consistently set in a fun and respectful way.  Everybody has a good time while givin' all they got on the bike.
    You're invited
to have fun, ride hard, be respectful...
and be the sheriff when needed.

    TODD BROWN

unOFFICIALLY, WE MIGHT BE ONTO SOMETHING.  When 20 somethings text each other, Hey, my favorite skate company Welcome just posted this picture... Isn't that your dad's event?  And when kids as cool as these two cats ride with us each week I gotta think...

    maybe we are...
    nah, we totally are.

Getting together each Tuesday for our little social ride keeps most of us mostly sane and mostly fit year round.  We depend on each other to be there, and we are.

But, making it special once a year with an unOFFICIAL timed ride and unOFFICIAL prizes and unOFFICIAL raffle and unOFFICIAL gear gives a lot riders who otherwise don't officially race a goal for the summer.

And that's really what it's all about... giving ourselves permission to have some fun and celebrate each other's talents and friendship.

This year was the first time a true "regular" has won the unOFFICIAL.  We've had pros drop in and win and we've had up and coming high schoolers join us off and on and win the day.  But, today Cheyne, with some help from his good friend Kevin in the finishing straight, got the win like he does most weeks.

It's been fun for me to see these two growing up, getting their careers going, buying houses... being men... and being very humble about their talents.

    Yeah, we're onto something...
I don't know what it is,
    but it is,
    and I dig that.

    Results for today: https://replaytiming.com/results/2018-tmwc/#1_83769B

Special shout out to Kevin Wayt for getting up early and handling the timing chips, and for Steven and Shelby for handing the swag. Bowl of Heaven was super tasty, Replay Timing got the results up in real time... and we had some great gifts from Monster Energy, a local sunglasses company, Rock N Road, Two Hubs, G2... and cash for the top ladies from PureRide.

    TODD BROWN

SUPER DAVE, THE HARDEST WORKING MAN AT THE BIG "S" SLOTTED IN NEXT TO ME.

Todd, I'm taking Tuesday off next week.

    Woohoo!

Because next Tuesday is the silliest, easiest, socialest ride of the year:  The unOFFICIAL Tuesday Morning World Championships.  It's just a bunch of clowns, clowning around who want a free t-shirt.

So, of course Dave's taking the day off.

Which is probably what we both should have done vs shattering speed records up Laguna Canyon this morning.

    Wind-aided?  A touch.

Pack-aided?  If you call the few that made it a pack.

Did we KOM?  Did a group of men, aided by wind go fast enough to snatch the KOM from...

    BRANDON MCNULTY?

Even though the research on pack dynamics (that's a very worthy link from Frank there) show the peloton is much more efficient than perviously thought? MUCH!  Did we beat Brandon's time?

    No.
    We are not worthy.

But we are worthy of some fun...
    so we're taking Tuesday off.
    Are you?

    Think about it here... https://pedalindustries.com/collections/tmwc-registration

IT AIN'T LIKE I'M SOME KINDA BEAST, so why ya gotta let me down this mornin'?  Like a dutiful servant I bowed before my steed.  Grabbed and twisted that spoke outta the way.  Opened up the quick adjust on the brakes and backed the cable as far as she'd go.
    Then I limped home.
Coulda begged Surfergirl to bail me out, but wanted to see how durable this wheel is.
Ran into David and made him turn around a keep me company for a coupla miles.
    Limped up the hill.
Shop says I threw the chain into the spokes once upon a time... yep, I do recall that.
Lesson learned... if that chain goes into the spokes, that bikes into the shop.
Thanks to Robert at RockNRoad LN.
Gosh I broke my spoke today.
The tears of rage I cannot lie
I'd be the last to help you understand
Are you strong enough to be my spoke

    Nothing's true, and nothing's right
Don't let me be alone tomorrow
'Cause you can't change the way I ride
Are you strong enough to be my spoke
Lie to me, I promise I'll believe...

    THE GREATEST

MAN, THAT DUDE IS TALL!  Wait.  No way.  That's Reggie Miller.  On a mountain bike.  Racing!

I was star struck.  Here was a guy I loved to watch play basketball.  A guy my dad and I cheered for at UCLA.  Here he was tonight at Pedal Fest.

Hey Greg, that's Reggie Miller right?

    Yeah!

Is he cool about meeting people?

    Totally.  Super nice guy.

So I strolled over, put my hand out and introduced myself... and we talked about bikes and racing.

    Me and Reggie.
    Something in common.
    Bikes.

I thought about telling Reggie how much we loved to watch him play, especially the greatest 9 seconds I've ever seen... and watching him taunt Spike Lee.  But, it's pretty clear he'd rather talk about bikes.

Some days I miss my dad more than others.  Today is one of them.  He would love this story.

    ___

Side Notes:  We spent the day in Santa Clarita meeting with city council and facility managers about our next HUNKR and Revolution Bike Fest... I think it's going to be very special.  Pedal Fest, Greg Flanagan's weekly MTB race, was our last stop... Greg has been a great help up there.  His race course looked really fun... I wish I'd been prepared to race with Reggie.

BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL, LONG-RUNNING GROUP RIDE IS A CORE GROUP OF FRIENDS.  There's joy in riding together, in the meet up.

No one asks what they can do for the group, they just do it.

They figure out where they can make their contribution, and make it.

Whether on or off the bike if there's a need, they fill it.

    Through life's ups and downs,
    week after week,
    ride upon ride,

ANYTIME YOU RIDE OVER 100'/MILE YOU'VE HAD A HILL OF A DAY.  That's my barometer.  60 miles, 6,000' of elevation gain... that's a heck of a day.

Lots of guys are training right now for Leadville... 100 miles, 12,000' of elevation... 120'/mile.  That's tough.

But, tomorrow's stage of the Tour is going to be insane.

    40 miles.
    10,000 feet.
    250'/mile

    I can't wait.

Look at that course.  Straight up, straight down, little flat, straight up, straight down, straight up.

That's 3 hours of hell for all but one rider tomorrow.
The winner will have had a hill of a day.
    Who will it be?

    I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR DRIVING

    TODD BROWN

I had countless drivers safely move on by today and the day before that and and the week before that and the month before that and the year before that and the decade before that.

Just like the driver that scared the crap outta me, they hustled on by never to be seen again.  I can't thank them, can't high five 'em, can't thumbs up 'em... Heck, I don't even know if they saw me!

And those drivers that cut it a way too close...

Did I give them the benefit of the doubt?
Was I wearing bright enough clothing?
Were lights flashing on my bike?
    Was I obeying the law?

Dehumanizing each other leads to the worst atrocities known to human kind.

It's not about the who's right.
    It's about us.
    All of us.

Hey man, thanks for giving me plenty of space.
    I really appreciate your driving.

ON A STUNNING CLIMB HIGH ABOVE LAGUNA BEACH, ONE OF THE CREW COMMENTED: I'd have to win the lottery to buy a house up here.

Silently, I doubted anyone with a million dollar view up here had actually won the lottery.

Another commented:  Want a million dollar view? Buy a bike.

I guess that's what is so addicting about the bike.  The simple pleasure of pushing up a climb and the satisfaction at the summit.

    We get there.
    We stop.

    JUST FOR FUN

    JUST FOR FUN

    Jul 19, 2018

    TODD BROWN

MY FRIEND KIM PUTS ON A HUGE ROLLING PARTY EVERY YEAR CALLED BIKE VIRGINIA.  She's just a plain fun person, plus she rides and she surfs... so yeah, we're friends.  But, the thing that really sticks out to me is the way she's arranged her life.  It's unlike mine, probably unlike yours.

    Is it doable?

    Yes, she's doing it.

Could you do it?  Could I?

    Check it out.

She and her husband live in an RV at a top surf spot on the East Coast.  In the winters they come west and live in a smaller RV - tiny, really - and surf and ride in our sunny warmth.  He just needs a laptop, she just needs a phone.  It's a lean lifestyle, and it's also very liberating.  They rented their house out years ago, with the idea they'd try it for a while.  It's been a while.  And they love it.

That gives her plenty of time to think of new, fresh ways to Bike Virginia.  It's not a race at all.  Everyday is fully supported with riders choosing multiple routes - long and short, spunky and leisurely.  Lots of food trucks to fill 'em up.  Great camping or lodging.  Sounds like a customizable party to me.

    Could I do that lifestyle?

I think so, my lady not so much.  Maybe one day I'll husband up and try it out.

    How 'bout you?

A GARAGE TELLS A THOUSAND WORDS

A GARAGE TELLS A THOUSAND WORDS

    Jul 18, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

WHAT'S IN YOUR GARAGE COULD CONVICT YOU.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A few that might shrug the evidence of their life.
    But me?
    You?
    Probably not.
    It's bikes and boards,
    helmets and wetsuits
    shoes and fins,
    lube and wax...
    We're guilty,
    we play.

That's our garage above.  It's tiny and packed.

    Sometimes I get garage envy.

Some of my friends, oh man.  Their garage floors you could eat off.  Their toolsets match the best bike shops.  And their quiver of rides... exquisite.  One friend has a walk-in washing bay for his bikes.

It's not coveting so much as admiration for my friends' creativity in building out their garages.  It's also admiration for their contributions to society; each one has done something amazing in the marketplace.  I truly appreciate what they've accomplished as I struggle along building my own dreams.

    How do you plea?

Guilty your Honor: of playing, of staying active and strong, of maximizing our body's potential.

    ... and the best part?

It's that you're my peers, and I couldn't think of a finer jury to go through life with.

LOOK IT'S GIRLS, ON BIKES, IT'S PRISCILLA AND URSULA!  Yes, the girls are starting to do TMWC again.  I don't know if these are shake down runs for the unOFFICIAL that's coming up in two weeks or just coincidence.

Maybe it's because PureRide Cycles is putting up cash for the top 3 ladies?

    But who cares?...

It's just great to have them join us for our little social ride.  They bring balance to the World.

We're gonna have some fun in 2 weeks.
CeeDub will be using his active chips to time us,
Bowl of Heaven will be feeding us,
and the winners will be getting new awards this year.

Ya never know... maybe you'll make it to Peter's video.

    AN OLD TRICK

    TODD BROWN

I DON'T HAVE MUCH, SO IT'S NOT SAYING MUCH WHEN I SAY IT TOOK EVERYTHING I HAD... but, It took everything I had to leave it in the small ring this morning.

    I had to.
    My legs felt great.
4 days on Catalina left 'em fresh,
but I wanted to save that feeling for tomorrow's TMWC.

Leaving it in the small ring is a great reminder to take it easy.  You start shifting that chain down in the lower cogs and it takes a lot of shifts to go fast.  Which is when the reminding comes in.

    ...

It's funny how I really can't get away from the bike even when I don't have a bike.  We were off on a family reunion with water and snorkeling and paddling and sailing on our minds.

On the way out of Peedro (localspeak) the domes atop PV reminded me how fun the Donut Ride can be and that I need to get back up there.

On the Island you can rent bikes to get around.  You can also ride on all the fire roads, going from one end to the other... but, bring your own bike would be my recommendation.

On the way back, the lady across the row started talking about Brian and Joy McCulloch and the Redlands bike race.  We're doing some gear for their Big Wheel Coaching... small world.

    ...

    So, we're back.
    I'm rested, and fatter.
    It'll still hurt tomorrow.

PS It was my first time camping on Catalina, it won't be the last.

PSS if you're planning on doing the unOFFICIAL TMWC please sign up now or we'll have to pull the plug.

IF YOU CAN'T MASTER 1 WHEEL, how can you master 2?

Most of us start with a two-wheeler plus 2 training wheels, then yank 'em off as soon as we can.

Once we get the 2 wheel thingy figured, we start ridin' wheelies... riding as far as we can on just the back wheel.

A few learn to ride a unicycle

I bought one summer when I was 15 and bored.  It took a week to master, hanging onto the raised garage door and going back and forth.  Some days I'd ride it 2 miles to school with my backpack.  It did not help me with the ladies as I'd hoped - shocker!  But, I did learn it's easier than it looks, it just takes practice and patience.

    There's a lesson there,
    somewhere,
    somewhere between 4 and 2 and 1,
    to keep it simple:
    Practice and Patience.

    TIMING THE CARBO LOAD

    TIMING THE CARBO LOAD

    Jul 09, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

IS IT TOO SOON TO CARBO LOAD FOR SATURDAY'S RIDE?  It's tour season, and I'm as geeked up as the next guy.  Saturdays are the days when I roll out with Phil and Paul playing Jiminy Cricket.  I can't afford to fall flat or bonk.

Proper prep involves a lot of TV watching, website reading, social media fomoing.  Which requires a lot of brain power.  But, at the end of the day... well, it's the end of the day.  I'll need sugar to keep the synapse snapping.

Then, we've got the actual night before.  Friday night.  Whatever carbs I've burned with the above activities combined with the immense concentration required to properly taper will have to be further counteracted and overloaded with even more sugar.

    It's Monday night.
Too soon to crack open the pink cookies?

    THE ANYWHERE RIDE

    THE ANYWHERE RIDE

    Jul 07, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

TODAY'S RIDE WAS JUST WHAT I NEEDED, AN ANYWHERE RIDE.  We met at 7am, like normal.  But we really didn't have a plan.  And that was the point, to ride anywhere the guy on front chose to go.

So often we get in the rut of "this route" or "this ride".  There's nothing wrong with a rut, unless you're on an MTB and don't know how to get out... then things can go bad, not that you'll die... but, it is true that a rut is like a coffin with the ends kicked out.

Anyway, off we went with no particular place to go.  All we really knew is we wanted to stay on the coast where it was cooler.

Turns out, when you ride anywhere you can end up everywhere.  I didn't know there were so many back alleys and underpasses to wiggle through, away from traffic.  For some it was all new, for others a chance to share secret stuff.

Sten took over through Laguna on the way back and pointed out every sweet surf spot in town.

We should do more of this in the future... see you at 7 for...

    A few hard efforts,
    and whole lot of JRA*...
    to anywhere.

    * JRA = just riding along

    TODD BROWN

FIRST THIS HAPPENED:  HEY, TODD BROWN!  The sun was behind him so I paddled over and he said, It's Bobby G.

Oh man!... it's been so long.

Yeah, I wouldn't have recognized you except I see you on FaceBook. Social media is so weird.  I thought you lived in Colorado because you always post bike riding?

    Nope, right here.

    Still surfing.

Yep, but mostly riding bikes unless it's good like today.  The bike is always good (always plugging the sport!)

We caught up on life after high school - family, kids, work.  I told him I always think of him when I surf this spot because of a terrible crash he had on his skateboard on the trail that leads to the beach.

(I didn't tell him I think about him at least once a week when I ride my bike past that corner... that would be weird.)

Actually, what would have been really weird is if you told us way back when that we'd still be surfing and riding bikes and skiing (he's a big skier) when we were this crusty.

Next, I texted SurferDan thanking him again for the magic surfboard he made me.  He replied he was in town.  Get over here!  He stopped by, checked out our current set up met some of the crew.

In the process, Dan said he quit riding his bike.

If you know Dan you know that's just silly.   Then he clarified it, It's been a week and it always seems weird when I don't ride for a week... as if I gave it up.

I wrapped up the day with a very windy spin.  It was a spindy, I guess.

    Sometimes weird things happen,
other times nothing happening is weird.

    TODD BROWN

MY BUDDY BRETT IS A VERY UNKNOWN BIG SHOT IN THE CYCLING WORLD.  When he comes to town, I listen.  His stories about past and present cycling, the ones you will never read, always deliver.  They are backed up by his massive collection of memorabilia:  The Horton Collection.

Last night he told me of one of his projects to have 4 custom steel frames made by 4 famous builders.  It was a collaboration with Campy, showcasing their newest 10-speed group set.

That's cool, but this is the juicy stuff.

He's had many famous and not famous riders come by and sent them around the test loop which features a down hill, a flat, a climb and a roller.  He's then asked each of them, Which is your favorite?

There is no clear cut winner.

From Adams to Zabel, the answers are as wide ranging as the riders themselves.  Which got me thinking...

If beauty is in they eye of the beholder,
Then so are the solutions to our challenges as a country.
Dividing ourselves between us and them is not going to deliver the best answers.
    Let us behold each other,
    Appreciate each other,
    Love each other.
    Honor each other.
    Listen to each other.

I'VE WRITTEN TODAY'S POST 3 TIMES.  The first two were all about me.  This one is about us.  You and me.  We have this pact.  We've agreed to ride bikes together.

Some of that riding is racing, most of it is just riding along.

We hold each other accountable with unsaid, silly goals to be the first to the City Limits sign.  And that's why I love you, because you make me better.

    Tomorrow we celebrate the 4th,

    THE unOFFICIAL... WILL BE... 7/31/18

    by
    TODD BROWN

YOU'VE GOT 4 WEEKS TO GET YOUR BUNS IN SHAPE.  On 7/31/18 The unOFFICIAL Tuesday Morning World Championships will be held.

You may ask what happened to doing it on the 10th?

    .... Life.
    Mainly my life happened.
    Brownie been busy.

So,  you may ask what's magical about the 31st?

Here's what's magical, whether or not you admit it, LayTurDayFranz is going to get you geeked up.

If you're like me, you'll pay for the app to watch it in the morning live, at lunch on repeat, in the background at the Interplanetary HQ, and fall asleep to it at night.

If you're like me, this is your favorite time of year to ride road because the weather is warm and the sun rises early and sets late.

If you're like me, it's fun to have an event on the horizon that's not too close and not too far away and not too hokey and not too serious.

What makes the unOFFICIAL different from the regular every Tuesday social ride?

The unOFFICIAL is a fund raiser for local high school MTB teams.

    We time it.

    We eat acai bowls after.

We have awards... because who doesn't like awards.

All that takes time to plan, and I've got some now.

Why do I have more time now?

Because we've finally got our US kit production up and running, cutting our production time from 6-8 weeks to 2-3 weeks.

Is it really all about you Todd?

Heck no, it's all about you.
So get your buns in shape.
Let's get geeked up and have some fun!

... stay tuned for registration, it'll be open soon.

I'M SUCH AN ARROGANT DORK!  Because I was leading the series, and because I was undefeated, and because I was too lazy to check the points system I totally disrespected my competition today.  The result:  I lost the championship by 1 measly point.

I deserved to lose, and they deserved to beat me silly.

Even the above is arrogant... so let me try and sanitize the scent, like I did at the finish.

Fellas, great racing today and congrats on the fast finishes.

Was something wrong with you Todd?

Nope.  You guys were better today.

    That's the truth.

It's also true that I rode too hard the last 10 days, didn't taper.  And it's true that I had a rough night.  And it's really true that I didn't bother to check how the scoring went, thinking it was like other series where wins count so heavy that my lead was unassailable.

    I should have:
    Rested,
I knew I was tired after the 6 races at OverTheHump.
Pre-ridden the course a few times,
it's technical and I lost a lot of time being cautious.
Looked at how the points are awarded,
That alone would have set up the previous 2 weeks.

It's arrogant to think that would have mattered, but if I'd taken those measures I'd at least know I gave it my all.  I did give it my all today, but I have those little things nagging at me... making me wonder and thinking... I coulda, woulda, shoulda.

I'm also really grateful.  I'm grateful to the Non-Dot crew for putting on a really fun race series. I'm grateful to have good health, and to have friends that are also healthy and able to race and still have fun.  I'm grateful to do as good as I did, 'cause I had no aspirations when it started... these guys are animals.  I'm grateful for the County of Orange for allowing the races.  I'm grateful for all the volunteers.

But, I'm most grateful to have been served up a big slice of humble pie.
    I was starving for it.

    Everybody ready to play.

Come on turd, get those wheels off the ground!

    Cool shot.

    Pizza never tasted to good!

    IT'S NOT MAGIC

    IT'S NOT MAGIC

    Jun 29, 2018

    TODD BROWN

IT WAS TRULY MAGIC TO WATCH HIM PLAY.  Friday nights with me and Chick Hern and Magic Johnson... Showtime!  But, for me the magic wasn't the winning, wasn't the teamwork, wasn't even his unbelievable skills.

For me, it was watching a man maximize his talent.  Magic was doing what he was born to do.  You could tell he loved it, you could tell he worked at it every single day.  And, WOW, was it fun to watch.

It's no different than watching a kid take off the training wheels and take those first few unsteady pedal strokes.  Soon, little Betty rips around the street smiling from ear to ear.  And, WOW, is that fun to watch.

    What's magic?
    Practice.
    Passion.
    Do it, make your magic...
... we all want to see it!

    WHICH CAT ARE YOU?

    WHICH CAT ARE YOU?

    TODD BROWN

MANY YEARS AGO USA CYCLING, OUR SPORT'S OVERLORDS, CREATED CATEGORIES FOR RACERS.  We start as Category 5 on the road, 4 off-road and work up to Category 1, then on to Pro.  I have immensely enjoyed the competition and "catting up" over the years.

But, I was thinking there are other categories that some people just rock:
    Smooth, easy to ride behind
    Points stuff out
    Fun to talk to
Pushes me to give a little more
    Can fix anything
Knows where the good food stops are
    Great route planner

You probably have a few of your own.  I'd love to know what they are... it's always good to try and cat up some more.

    THAT'S RELATIVITY

    THAT'S RELATIVITY

    TODD BROWN

AT ABOUT 7AM THIS MORNING MY ENTIRE BODY WAS SHAKING.  Failure was near.  Time... the more I looked at the stopwatch feature on my phone the slower time went.

It was just 2 minutes in the plank position,
    It seemed like an hour.

At about 5pm this afternoon we rolled out for MTB WDNSDY.  It was 80+ degrees, we were moving slow, gaining over 1700'.

It was 6 miles straight up for an hour,
    It seemed like 2 minutes.

    That's relativity.

----> Side note: I definitely should have gone to Santiago Oaks today to pre-ride Saturday's race course.  There's a pretty tricky down hill that I haven't ridden since last year.  Oh well, now I have a relatively good excuse.

    WHO ARE YOU?

    WHO ARE YOU?

    TODD BROWN

THE BEST PART ABOUT THE KID IS HIS ENTHUSIASM.  Frankly, that's the best part about all my riding buddies:  EN-THUS-EEEEASM!  It's a greek word meaning "possession by a god", and there's one thing for sure... we are all part of the cult of two wheels.  It's more than hooked, more than into it, we are religious in our observance of daily practice.

Like any recent convert the kid is on fire and you know what the say... people will come from miles around to watch a man burn.  I predict he'll bring a ton of kids into the fold.

Like any old diesel, I'm willing to share all I know.  So when I got this text after this morning's TMWC ...

I had a to share what another old diesel told me early on...

It really is the best advice I ever got from a salty old man in his mid-30s.  Not only does it take 3 years to figure it, but... in three years you can actually mold yourself into a different kind of cyclist.

At some point I'm gonna encourage the kid to shave his legs.  NOT because it makes you faster, not because it's pretty, but at some point his skills are going to be on par with is fire... until then, that hair is a good signal to the initiated that he deserves a little extra space and tender loving care.

    He's new.
    Be patient with him.
    He's the future.
    Teach him.

    IS IT FINALLY SUMMER?

    IS IT FINALLY SUMMER?

    Jun 25, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

SUMMER HERE HAPPENS WHEN IT'S SUNNY ALL DAY LONG, when we push past maygrayjunegloom.  Tomorrow is looking like it'll be one of those days when I get to wear the sunglasses, not the photochromics.  I love the nerdy look of the photochromics, and I love not needing them even more.

It means it's warm and sunny at 530 am, a beautiful thing.
It means soon we'll be geeking out to the tour.
It means the unOFFICIAL TMWC is near.
It means a jersey and bibs will suffice.

Now that's a potent list of awesomeness, which is why I love summer.  So much daylight to get out and play.  So get out there!

BUT YOU HAVE NOT BEEN BAPTIZED

BUT YOU HAVE NOT BEEN BAPTIZED

    Jun 23, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

EVERYBODY HAS A FIRST TIME, a day they are baptized into the bloody brotherhood of San Juan.  It's a day they will never forget, a trail they will always remember.

Miles of slippery decomposed granite, infinite switchbacks, steep drop offs and lots and lots of poison oak all competing with striking views across the West Coast to the ocean blue.

Once you've done it, once you realize that yes you will most likely give blood every single time and yes it's likely there'll be some mechanical failure along the way and yes it's nearly two hours to the top... once you've done it and lived to tell your tale then you can't resist inviting a friend.

That poor friend will be just like you were and you don't care.

You try and warn but it comes out so weak because after the blood is dried and scabs are healed and the lingering itch of the poison oak is no more all you can remember is those huge vistas, the exhilaration of conquering the climb and a long, long smile-filled drop back to earth.

    You have been baptized,
    but your friend hasn't...
    yet.
    What are friends for?

    _____

    It's starts off so innocent.

SO, YOU'VE BEEN WORKED TO THE BONE.  Whatta ya do now?  When you feel like you're nothing but a skeleton, like there's no more energy to give, but you know the work is done?

... then one of your crew fires off a text like this...
Just like that the rejuvenation begins.
    It's like magic.

I feel the energy swelling in my chest as it prepares to suck up massive amounts of oxygen.  My legs tingle with eagerness.  My eyes close and I see glorious single track being gobbled up as my knobbies scratch and claw across the decomposed granite.

With friends like that, how can we ever get old?
    I ain't no skeleton!
    It's closing time,
    Time to ride!

What they are probably wondering is how do you work and still look great?

Every now and then you'll find a cycle mate, then you can really geek out.

    I've been to France,

THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW HORST'S FACE

THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW HORST'S FACE

    Jun 20, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

DUE TO THE RECENT FIRES IN ALISO WOODS MANY TRAILS ARE CLOSED.  So, I found myself at the bottom of Rocket and decided to head on up as the lower portion of Coyote is verboten.  Rocket is a difficult trail to ride down and nigh impossible to ride up because of a quarter of mile section of rough rock (the pictures don't do it justice).  But, 25 years ago, on our rigid MTBs, Surfergirl and I stopped in awe as a 50 year old man (FIFTY!!!!) was riding his bike UP! Rocket.

He introduced himself and his incredible machine.  Horst Leitner was a myth to me, and the bike a whisper.  Somewhere out there was said to be a full-suspension mountain bike with a disc brake on the front.  We'd only seen pictures up to this point.  And here we were with the man and the machine himself.

Here was living proof that full suspension mountain bikes were coming and they'd change the way we rode forever.  Someone I considered way beyond his riding years was riding up an impossible trail and making it look easy.

As I picked my way up the trail tonight two things bounced around me noggin:  one, I'm older than Horst was 25 years ago... so maybe 50 ain't what it used to be; two, why in the heck am I riding a hardtail!

Here's a great example of that amazing bike.  I wanted one so bad, but it was out of my range.  Something I could only dream about.

Horst sold the patent to the rear suspension to this little company called Specialized.  It's still in use.

Here's a link to more of his amazing inventions

    ... I love capitalism.

    A DIFFERENT KIND OF WINNING

    A DIFFERENT KIND OF WINNING

    Jun 19, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

THOMAS WATSON FAMOUSLY TOLD HIS SALES TEAM, FAIL MORE.  Thomas Edison famously said, I haven't failed I have found 10,000 ways that won't work.  Mike Tyson famously said, Everybody has a plan 'til they get punched in the mouth.

Want to win a bike race?  Sign up.
Haven't won yet?  Sign up for more.
Still haven't figured out how to win?  Now you know what doesn't work for you.
Stick with it, one day you'll learn how to "punch someone" and take home the prize.

Whether your signing up for a formal race or just hitting the local group ride or racing virtually, racing is a great teacher.

Figuring out how to win is fascinating.  It's a never ending game.  Someone is nearly always better.  But, we keep coming back like Pavlov's dogs because every now and then it pays off.  We add a new strategy or technique and a little confidence to our quiver.

After you've won some, share the knowledge.  Help someone.  It's a different kind of winning.

HERE IN CABO, I’ve seen a total of 5 dudes kitted up on race bikes.  Three were sprinting for grupo supremacy Sunday morning.  Another was 50 kilometers out of town on a Tri bike on a road to nowhere but great surf. The last sported a Tinkoff Jersey on a gravel bike with a flat tire.

    This ain’t home

    IS IT REALLY SATURDAY?

    IS IT REALLY SATURDAY?

    Jun 16, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

SATURDAYS AND BIKES AND FRIENDS STARTED OUT WHEN I WAS ABOUT 10.  Me and the gang ‘d ride all day. Nobody missed us.

As soon as someone could drive, surfing pushed the bikes to the side.  But surfing is a fickle lover and the bike is always good, always ready.

When the family was young I rallied the crew to get back from riding by 830ish.  Just as the kid’s cereal and cartoon sesh came to an end, I’d romp in grab the youngins gear em up and go for the second ride, like a hobbit’s second breakfast.

Now they’re all growed up and the only way we can get the band together and unplugged from work and school is taking a trip.

It’s Saturday and I’m not riding and it’s perfect.

I USED TO LAUGH AT BIKE RIDERS WITH FLATS AND THEIR SAD FACES.
Then I started riding bikes and got a flat.
    Lots of flats,
    Taught me to fix flats,
Now I stop and help riders with flats and enjoy their glad faces.

    You can't help no one,
    if ya can't help yourself.

I used to get mad if I got a flat,
    sometimes I still do,
    but mainly I think,
    meant to be,
because I've many a time I've been late to a mishap,
    I've seen the damage,
    and thought,
    that could have been me.

    You can't help no one,

    COURAGE

    COURAGE

    Jun 14, 2018

    TODD BROWN

COURAGE IS BEING SCARED TO DEATH BUT SADDLING UP ANYWAY.  A famous man was known for that saying, and nobody doubted he had plenty of courage.

The more we saddle up, the less courage we need.

Bar-to-bar racing in a screaming pack, dropping down a skinny single track, starting a 100 mile race across dirt roads... the terrifying becomes common, we gain confidence.

    Be scared,
    Saddle up,
    Confidence and skills
    are just around the corner.

I learned that from my daughter.  I'm glad she's home.

    WHO DOES THIS?

Who takes the time to carve cleverness into rocks and dot the trails?

Who stops and scoots glass out of the bike lane?

Who rides with a $20 to give a "bum"?

Mike Franze (Fullerton Bikes) tracked me down at OverTheHump:  Todd, I've been so lifted up by the calls, texts, and posts regarding my crash and subsequent surgery....

... But Todd, why don't we do that all the time?

    RACING TO RACE

    TODD BROWN

THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF RACERS:  those who race to win and those who race to race.

Racing to win might lead to win at all costs thinking.

Racing to race on the other hand might lead to a deeper view of how winning is defined.

I'm not sure which approach yields the most podium finishes, but I'm pretty sure one produces more wins.

.... sometimes, like tonight, I just race to race.
    Knowing I'm a little off,
having the leg marker gal confirm it,
    I line up anyway,

    WHO MOVED MY TRAIL?

    WHO MOVED MY TRAIL?

    Jun 11, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

AT SOME POINT YOU'RE GONNA BE LEADING.  Not leading the race, but leading humans.  You have been, are and/or will be leading.  Being the person people look up to aint easy, if it was everybody would do it.  You will do it, because you have to.  Because something inside is telling you to stand up and make a difference.

Whether it's putting together a birthday ride for a friend or a skills clinic for new riders or giant charity ride you're going to do it and your "name" is gonna be on it.  Most people will have a blast and not say a word, a handful will gripe.  It's up to you who you want to listen to and how you want to react.  I know you're going to do your best and that's all you can do.

    So do it.

... the preceding was on my mind today as I came upon a bike trail washed out by giant surf.  I thought Who moved my trail? which made me think of the book I have yet to read Who moved my cheese? I don't know what that book is about, but I imagined it was about talking responsibility for one's own actions and for deciding to lead and to make a difference and to keep inviting people to get out and ride their bikes and I wondered if the headlining suicides of my generation would have been avoided if a little more bike riding was done, if a little more leading were on the menu and I resolved to up my game.

    Do it, now.
    Hung on his wall.
    Let's get busy,

    IT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED

    IT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED

    Jun 09, 2018
    by
    TODD BROWN

THERE WAS A PILE UP TODAY, and my friend is very hurt.  He'll need surgery on his neck.  He should be okay.  Whether or not you're the praying type, now would be a good time to fire one up on his behalf.

My spider sense gave no warning.  Very, very unusual - normally I have a really strong advance feeling.  I've done this ride many times and there was nothing special about the pace.  In fact, other days on this particular section - La Costa - have seemed much sketchier.

Less than a minute before I was joking about having him bring some of his awesome WEND product to me on the ride.  He was jazzed to go Long with a group of us from OC.

It was supposed to be fun.
    But, it wasn't.

Emergency professionals were quickly on location.  First a doctor who was driving by, then paramedics.  Quickly he was rushed to a fantastic medical facility.  Diagnosed. Scheduled.  What a country we live in!

Many others went down, but he was in the worst shape.  His forks sheered off at some point in the crash - not the cause.  Of those I know, all were able to go on about their day.

It's terrible for this to ever happen to anyone,
it seems extra awful because Ryan is such a nice dude.
    Always happy.
    A truly sweet demeanor.
The kind of guy you just like to see and hang out with.

If you're so inclined, today would be a good day to try out his products.  I can't go without his  Wax Off Chain Cleaner.  If you use any kind of wax lubricant, Wax Off has got to be in your tool box.

Follow up:  Someone didn’t point out a pot hole, someone hit it launching their bottle into their wheel and the wheel locked up. From there all hell broke loose.  There's not much anybody can to to prepare for that.
