WITH ALL THY FITNESS, GET...

IS THERE MORE TO RACING, than racing?  Well, yeah.  Of course.  A lot more, the only question is are we taking advantage of the opportunities.  As the wise one said...

... With all thy fitness, get adventurous.

By that, I don't mean in a racy way.

The point is to go somewhere,
do something new,
unattempted.

We've got the fitness,
which too few people actually have,
so we can accomplish what most cannot fathom to attempt.

So, what's it gonna be...

  • Ride across the country
  • Travel to a remote destination
  • Run the Grand Canyon rim to rim
  • Go from hut to hut in Colorado

... pick something.

What's holding us back...

  • A tour guide
  • Language barriers
  • Support in case things go wrong

... nothing that can't be solved.

Do it.

H0W ARE THEY SO EXPLOSIVE?

OK, WE GET IT THAT PROS ARE FASTER.  Right?  But, how they heck are they so explosive without racing?  Asking for a friend, myself, and...

... anybody forced to train alone.

We gotta know.

  • Personally, I enjoy the solitude.
  • Others don't near other riders or group rides
  • And, then there's those who's with uncooperative schedules

How are the outstanding pros doing it?

Not racing,
showing up and slaughtering their competition.

Intervals?

Well, personally I can't stand intervals for more than a few weeks without...

... wanting to take a hammer to my bike computer.

Riding and racing with the teammates?

That makes a little more sense, but only a little.  Who wants to drill or get drilled by their trusted allies?

Way more rested?

Mmmmmaybe the non-racing leads to a more rested and ready body?

Healthier?

Because they aren't traveling so much:

  • They aren't picking up colds and flues.
  • They aren't eating whatever they can find.
  • They aren't taking such large risks as when racing

E-racing?

Are they just getting on a trainer and duking it out with the online competition?   If they are, don't they need to have fake profiles for privacy as well as less fitness?

Virtual racing?

Setting up race course segments on Strava and trying to beat the PRs?

I dunno, for me...

... ain't nothing like the real thing.

GETTING PUSHED AROUND IN THE GROUP

THE RIDE WAS GETTING SPICEY.  The pace increasing considerably, and the terrain going from flat to sawtooth.  The legs were screaming, and...

... and I was moving backwards.

Then, it happened.

Just before the apex of quick power climb,
just when I needed it most...

... my pal, The Gambler, gave me some pedal assist.

Yep, he had the gaul to put his paws on my lycra and pushed me some.

And I loved it.

It was just the right amount
to keep me on.

Sly enough I quietly thought and hoped...

... Maybe nobody noticed.

That's thing about needing help.

When we could really use some,
we don't ask.

Good givers, like The Gambler, don't ask...

... the just give.

Without making a big deal about it.

SHOULD WE LEARN TO TUMBLE?

LIKE MOST OF US, we have a group of regular riders.  So far, 3 of the 10 of us have broken bones this year.  One hit a tree skiing, one crossed wheels today...

... and, well, you know my saga.

I was off the back over the top,
and rolled up on the mishap.

If you're a real rider,
you've broken your collar bone.

Ok, I don't know if that's 100% true.

But, I have broken one,
while riding.

So, it's common.

And I gotta ask...

... Should we take tumbling lessons?

Would it help?

Would it keep us from doing the natural thing vs...

... rolling out of danger?

Maybe, sometimes.

Not a guarantee,
perhaps a skill worth...

  • learning
  • practicing
  • investigating

... got a thought on this?

IS THIS THE BEST RIDE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA?

IMAGINE A RIDE THAT FEATURES all the beauty and wonder of Southern California.  The beaches, the shaded prairies, the tall forests with ski runs...

... covering all of it in a single day.

Oh, and almost no traffic.

Impossible you say.

Not.

100% possible.

It took us years to scout it.

Here are some pics from 2023... route below.

Here's the route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3216181932420212282

It's 120 miles, 15000' of climbing.

We start at Doheny State Beach and wind up in Big Bear, refueling at convenience stores and restaurants along the way.

It's almost all dirt most to Corona, then a 35-mile bike trail across the Inland Empire.  At the bottom of the mountains, we jump on an abandoned logging road, and it's nearly all dirt to the top, and down into Big Bear.

Epic.

Insanely epic.

Are you game for the ride of the year?

Some of the FAQ's from a Zoom call yesterday.

Logistics:

      1.    Where to stay Friday Night?  Dinner plans?  Stay as close as you can to Dana Point, where we start… it’s only a few minutes drive to my house.  We’ll have dinner at my place and go over last minute specifics.

      2.    Ride start time?  Official Start is 6am, I highly recommend slower riders leave earlier to make sure we all get to Colton at the same time for the flat 35 miles across the Inland Empire – much easier in a group.

      3.    Where can we store bags? My van… Susie will drive it to Big Bear.

      4.    Confirm - unsupported?  Any plan B options for repairs, crashes, etc.? It’s self-supported, be prepared.

            a. Anyone we can hire to assist?  Is there a way to transport overnight bag? Susie will drive it to Big Bear.

      5.    Big Bear

            a. Anyone staying the night?  TBD on this.

            b. Transporation back to Orange County?  TBD on this.  Some ride back, some Uber back.  We need a final head count.

      5.    Snow blocking trails? Currently yes, but it’s getting warmer and it’s a south facing climb, we should be fine.

People

      1.    How many people are coming and their capabilities?  Unknown, people always commit and don’t show, others never commit and just show up.

            a. We are locomotives not goats:).  Likelihood of creating riding groups of different speeds (any forecasted pacing / finish times)? For sure start early, and KNOW HOW TO UPLOAD A ROUTE to your device.  Any regrouping points?  One for sure, in Colton at a convenience store… depending on pace, we might all meet up at Seven Oaks restaurant about 1/3 up the climb… some of us will do some extra climbing and single track at end of 35 mile bike trail, others will go straight to the climb, which is why we might end up there at roughly same time.

Nutrition

      1.    Where are the nutrition and water stops? ONeil Park is about 2 hours in, a campground with water and bathrooms.  Do NOT dillydally at any stops.  Next stop is Colton, about 4 hours away.  These are my estimates for your speed.

      2.    Water stops on the final climb or is two bottles sufficient? At Seven Oaks restaurant, we can get water, soda, hamburgers, fries… depending on heat, 2-3 bottles.  My bike holds 3.

      3.    Nutrition recommendations? 300-400 calories per hour.  Whatever you like and sits well in your stomach. I like CarboRocket, 333 calories/bottle.

Equipment

      1.    Tire recommendation? I am running Continental Terra Speed 45s, with 32lbs in the rear, 28 in the front.  Lots and lots of sealant before we roll.

What are the gravel sections like? Pretty nice, a little more rutted from rain run-off, but totally 100% ridable and fun.  There’s a little single track where trail is currently flooded close to the start.

      2.    Other gear that would be helpful (e.g. hydration pack, lights). Lights for sure, early start, and maybe a late finish.  Be able to carry 3 large bottles worth of water. Get a BLACK  mosquito net, bugs can be nasty… we learned the hard way that the white nets reflect light which was blinding as the sun was setting.

                3.            Clothing recommendations?  (Temp change to expect)?  May is a tricky month, I’ll carry my KOM Jacket which is great for wind and water and small enough to go in my Barrito Bag … my bike will have a Barrito for the KOM jacket, and food and drink mix supplies in my Day Ripper bag.  Only other item I’d carry would be arm warmers… but highly unlikely we’ll need them.  My Wahoo died 30 minutes from the top… bring a battery booster.

ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO BE...

I POLLED THE RIPPERS and 100% of them lift weights or do resistance exercise year round.  Well, I was shocked by that.  I had no idea if we rubbing off on each other...

... just hope.

In the beginning, after our first day with real weight, we often echo the great Cheryl Crow song...

... God, I feel like hell tonight.

Why do it?

  • Strong bones
  • Good posture
  • Improved ability to handle challenges

Why not?

  • Takes time
  • Potential to get hurt

Here's my current program,
takes about 15 minutes.

  • 6 pullups
  • 18 pushups
  • 10 shoulder press
  • 5 pullups
  • 15 pushups
  • 6 squats
  • 4 pullups
  • 12 pushups
  • 20 toe raises, 10 heel raises
  • 3 pullups
  • 9 pushups
  • 10 curls (vanity muscles)
  • 2 pullups
  • 6 pushups

In other words, mainly pullups and pushups with something extra to break up the sets.

The focus is on large muscle groups.

In Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance, there's a strong emphasis on tendon strength being key to true athlete prowess.  We develop that moving heavy weight with large muscle groups...

... the stuff we need to be fast.

For the bar...

  • Jump up to the bar, and let yourself down slowly.
  • Use a pullup assist machine
  • Giant rubberbands

For pushups...

  • Figure out hand positions that are comfy on the shoulders
  • It's cool to start on your knees

Squats...

  • Do air squats and put that arse in the grarsse
  • Go half way down

Start somewhere,
just start.

HOW TO OVERCOME INJURY

I'VE BEEN ASKED TWICE TODAY if I had any feelings of Why me? after my brain injury.  And, how did I overcome that?  Well, good questions because...

... we all gotta battle through the shiz.

During the darkest days, I only had one thought.

How can I fix this?

We've all been dealt multiple bad hands over the years, and if we think about it...

... we often come through them stronger, better.

It never seems like it at the time.

Our challenges, I believe, are our challenges, for a reason.

As rotten as they appear...

... they are personalized gifts.

If they weren't for our benefit and didn't totally suck,
they'd be easy to overcome,
requiring little effort,
personal growth,
or change.

With that in mind, I set about studying and researching how best to recover from this unplanned set back.

There's plenty of improvement still to be made...

... and that's exciting as hell!

GIMME SHELTER

THERE AIN'T NOTHING LIKE A TAILWIND to blow the group to pieces.  The palms were bending, for sure...

... this one was gonna hurt.

It's counter intuitive.

But, it goes like this.

Alone, a tailwind feels nice.

A chance to tap lightly on the pedals and fly along.

In a group, it's whole different game.

The strong go to the front and drill it.

'problem is, there's no draft,
no place to hide,
no rest.

Which is exactly how it went down today.

Three of us were rotating.

Hard pulls.

It felt terrible,
and great.

Nobody else was pulling through.

I didn't blame 'em,
it was hard as heck.

I glanced back...

... gap was 30 feet.

Then 300 feet.

Then, a slight bend in the road,
an every so tiny gap opened, and...

... I was ejected.

Just couldn't close it.

No draft.

How was the ride back up the coast into the wind?

Well, alone it woulda been a bear.

In the group, much easier.

Sure the brief moment pulling through stung a bit, then...

... it was right back to the shelter.

So, there you have it.

Tailwind, get on the front and get a gap.

Headwind, take it easy, nothings getting away.

DO LESS, AND OBSESS

CAN'T GET THIS CONCEPT OUTTA MY MIND, not because I've never considered it, because it's so darn rhymey. I coudn't say it better...

... Do less, and obsess.

Maybe I just needed to hear the message?

The idea of having 1 (one) 'A' race a year has always turned me on...

  • It's more fun to have one focus
  • dive into the nittygritty
  • get granular
  • geek out

... that's the shift I love.

Yeah, I might end up with a bike that's not good for much but a particular course,
training that is so specialized as to be worthless for everything else.

But, that's the point.

To be so singular,
to be uniquely prepared.

Then, and only then, I might have a chance...

... and that's all the hope I need.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to treat...

... all other races as distractions at best.

Places to test...

  • equipment
  • strategy
  • training

... nothing more.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to commit...

... to training blocks and weight lifting.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to see...

... the big picture.

To do less,
and obsess.

HE'S TRYING TO KILL ME

THE POOR WOMAN WAS RED IN THE FACE, if looks could kill her guide/date would be dead.  They'd just cleared a very overgrown jungle and were now pushing their bikes up a rocky stretch...

... who could blame her?

Who could blame him?

Sometimes our sense of adventure...

... is total nonsense.

I could only laugh.

Don't kill him here, you need to get home first!

They had a ways to go.

We have about 5 weeks to prep for the SurfNSummit.

Yeah, it's far.

Lots of climbing.

But, still I'm surprised at how many people misjudge what it takes.

Some, think it's just impossible to complete...

... usually my most fit friends.

Others, show up with what appears to be no business attempting it...

... but, hope and the desire to do something epic.

It's one of those Henry Ford moments.

Whether you think can, or think you can't...

... you're right.

So, if you think you can ride 100+ miles with 15,000+ feet of climbing...

AN OBSERVATION ON UNEVEN POWER BETWEEN LEGS

ONE OF THE SETTINGS ON MY POWER METER shows the power put out by each leg.  It can def ovewhelm for an entire ride, because we can...

... freak out about data we don't like.

It's on one of my Wahoo screens.

I see it from time to time on a ride.

Consciously trying to even out the power was annoying the heck out of me.

One leg was always stronger, unless I reallyreallyreallyreally focused.

Then, I had an idea.

Something to try,
that I used to do.

This came to me when I noticed standing and climbing,
power was always 50/50.

Hmmmm.

What's the difference?

Then I noticed,
same thing when it got steep and I really had to put out some power.

Well, that was nice to see...

... somewhat calming.

Hmmmm...

... how to do that all the time?

Welp, this is just an observation.

It might not work for you.

Meter could be mismonitoring, but this makes all the difference in the world...

... when I consciously focus on pedaling with the heels down.

What?

Really?

Yes.

What I think is happening is I'm eliminating a dead spot along the top of my pedal stroke...

... gonna verify with my genius bike fitter, Ashley.

THE WHAT AND WHY OF A PROPER EZ SPIN

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE LEGS TO COME AROUND, which means I had to actually dedicate myself to do some easy spins.  Because, like most of us it's just...

... darn hard to go easy.

Or, is it just me?

First off, what constitutes an easy spin?

Two things:

  • Low effort
  • High rpm's

How low?

Very bottom of Zone 2, or anything in Zone 1.

How high?

90-100+ rpm's.

Why?

Well, one of my early coaches called it a Rinse Ride for a reason.

If we are really doing it correctly,
our legs feel all clean and springy because...

... we rinsed out the crud.

Why else?

  • It's good on the brain
  • Takes the pressure off, simply relaxing
  • Great time to catch up with friends and chat while spinning

How long?

45-90 min seems about right.

The things we think about when we're just spinnin' ez.

EVER HAD THE CRUD BEAT OUT OF YOU, FOR REAL?

GROWING UP, we fought a lot.  We were too weak to do much physical damage, but there was plenty of pride and shame on the line.  It's not much different now...

... when we race.

If we truly get the crud beat out us by...

  • the course
  • the competition
  • our worse, ourselves

... there is only one question.

Did we really get it beat out of us?

Or, are we destined to get pummeled over and over again because...

... the crud is still there?

Is our diet a joke?

Do our handling skills still stink?

Does our bike squeak and wobble?

'Cause if that crud is still there, then...

... it's not beat out of us.

We've just learned to live with mediocrity...

... and that's just plain cruddy.

IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER ROAD PEDALS FOR OFFROAD?

WHEN I WAS PRE-RIDING LEADVILLE a while back, the phenom who would shatter the course record floated by me as I labored.  He made it look so easy...

... was it the pedals?

99% of MTB racers,
dismount on that course.

There is no way they'd sport road shoes and pedals,
even though they are...

  • Lighter
  • More aero
  • Offer better contact and efficiency

... because once fouled they're VERY difficult to get engaged.

Gravel,
is another deal.

Unless we are pushing the boundaries,
ripping single track,
slaloming sand...

... we're not going to dismount.

The only time would be if crashed,
or unclipped to rutter a turn.

In most gravel races,
that's not likely.

So, should we run the road set up offroad?

I have multiple friends who roll the dice in local XC races...

... and even the long, epic stuff.

It almost always works out great.

Worth the risk?

Up to you.

Worth testing?

100%.

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TRAINING BIG BLOCKS?

A QUESTION CAME UP LAST NIGHT ON OUR ZOOM CALL.  Have you ever trained big training blocks like Keegan Swenson just posted.  Good question...

... does it work?

Maybe.

Here's what I can tell you from personal experience.

18 months ago, I was prepping for my insane time goal at Leadville.

I was really committed.

Holed up in Breckinridge all by myself,
for the month prior.

It's easy to be selfish with the time,
when you're by yourself.

The race is in August.

In July, I did..

  • 20 hours
  • 22 hours
  • 25 hours

... a lot more than my normal 10-12 hours a week.

It was very race specific training.

Lots of Zone 2.

Recovery
was key.

I came out of that in awesome shape,
and had the best race
of
my
life.

Does it work for everybody?

I have no idea.

But, I'll definitely do it again when prepping for a once in a life quest.

THINGS TO CHECK FIRST...

THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT CAN MAKE OR BREAK a race, the chief being the bike.  Bikes don't win races, but they sure can make things a lot harder...

... or a lot easier.

As I went through my checklist, I found a few issues:

  • Rear brake pad smoked
  • Sealant dried out
  • Battery low

It's kinda nice to have brakes that work, especially with a ripping downhill like Saturday's.

The course should be in pretty good shape, but that doesn't mean a small wire or piece of glass couldn't be a day-ender without sealant.

And c'mon...

... ya can't ride these modern bikes without good batteries.

And, I'm not just talking about the derailleur batteries.  Many of the shifters have their own small batteries.

I have made the mistake of not checking the shifter batteries.

Heck, I didn't even know about them until the start of the Filthy 50 a couple of years ago.  I didn't warm up, just saddled up and headed to the start.

Typically MTB XC start... everybody pinned to get to the single track first...

... I got there last.

Shifter was dead, I was spun out and then spit out.

15 minutes later, with some help from the mechanic on site, I was back at it.

Which is exactly why I came up with the RaceDay Bike Checklist, and made it into a sticker.

https://pedalindustries.com/products/raceday-ready™-checklist-stickers

For about a year now we've been shipping the stickers out with each RaceDay Bag purchase.  They're great for tool boxes and benches.

THE HEROIC MOVE

THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT RACING GOING ON.  Locally, regionally, internationally.  Sometimes we witness the unfathomable attack from impossibly far out, other times...

... a second or third wind, for the win.

By inches.

We shouldn't be impressed.

I'm mean,
it's cool.

We all cheer.

But the truth is the victory was secured long ago.

When nobody was cheering.

It was dark,
lonely,
cold.

The alarm was more drill sergeant, than fan.

In those moments...

... the heroes make their moves.

If we're lucky,
we witness the results.

IT'S LIKE THE SUN GOING UP ON ME

40 DEGREES, 80% HUMIDITY ain't nothing.  Combine that with a dawn start, the sun hidden behind the hills, and, well, when you're going 20+ mph in your underpants...

... it's bonechilly.

I left the knee warmers behind.

No vest.
No jacket.

Just arm warmers,
a base layer,
skull cap.

It's risky,
we might freeze,
this is how we do it...

... when we know sunny times are ahead.

So are they?

Whether we are enjoying the longer days,
recovering from an injury,
just getting back at it...

... we hope and plan for...

  • better fitness
  • decreased fatness
  • all things to improve

... it's a process.

And, we know it.

Just like the sun coming up,

we imperceptibly rise to the occasion.

That's how today was for me.

Still got dropped,
but made it a little further.

I'll take it.

Here's a snapshot of where things stand.

There's nothing like a good fitness journey.

MY DUMBEST PREDICTION YET

PARIS-ROUBAIX IS SUNDAY.  I can't wait.  It's always so fun to watch, and such a battle of machine, mind, and bike handling.  Lots of drama, and this year...

... is starts before the famed Arenberg Forest.

The forest is always crazy.

Mud.

Cobbles.

A massive battle for the front ensues for those who want the best chance of getting through with the lead group...

... unscathed.

This year, the organizers decide a chicane right before entering the forest would be a good idea.

Less dangerous.

I looked at the layout.

Here's my prediction.

Rather than racing for the forest entrance to avoid carnage...

... they will race to the chicane.

And...

  • have plenty of lycra on the pavement.
  • or in the barriers
  • or both.

... I hope I'm wrong.

Then, we have to wonder, at least I do, what is the point of racing?

Call me crazy, but I think part of it is to show bike handling prowess.

We're still gonna see it with the chicane.

Just seems like a little chicanery...

... to appease, who?

By regularly getting the blood work done, we have a baseline for "our" normal.

I don't have that.

When I had the brain injury a few months ago,
things changed.

The brain is our command center, telling the body what to produce and control and do, etc.

A brain injury often causes issues with how the body is regulated.

Today, we reviewed my blood work which was drawn a few weeks ago.

Some markers are out of range - too high on some, too low on others.

Bad news is...

... I have no reference point of "my" normal.

Could be genetic, could be from the injury.

Good news is...

... we know where I'm at, and have some corrective measures to take.

Bonus, most indicators are positive for my body, and with my overall health.

Dr. Cory King, my functional health doctor from Encinitas, went over it all with me.

Nothing too scary...

... but definitely areas to not ignore.

Things like cholesterol levels, vitamin levels, etc. that can have negative effects if left untreated.

So, we'll chock this up as another blessing from my brain injury.

Regardless of your awesome health.

Find out where you are at,
things can probably be improved.

Consider this a gentle and loving nudge from me to you...

... get the blood work done.

CHEAT CODE

HERE'S A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET.  Okay, maybe it's not all that dirty but it is secret and fact is it's...

... a cheat code for life.

There's a reason we get out and do our thing.

Sure, it's great to be in shape.

Have that come what may attitude.

Fact is, even though the fitness is great...

... there's something better.

  • The problems we solve
  • Ideas we come up with
  • Freedom to think

We often, nearly always, return...

... renewed.

Ready

To

Kicka$$

Even when,
especially when...

... we've rung out our body's energy supply.

STRUGGLING WITH WEIGHT... TRY NOT

SINCE MY AWESOME START TO THE YEAR, knocking myself out and spending a 5 days in ICU, my metabolism has changed.  This is not uncommon, given the standard protocols...

... and now I'm pissed.

I didn't ask for this, and that is not the problem.

I haven't asked for a solution.

I have forgotten my own wisdom.

Well, on the eve of my bday, yesterday, I was asked...

... What do you want?

Get my lycracovered buns back in fighting shape.

I went to bed with a question...

... How do I get back to my normal, leanish self?

I woke up with an answer.

A book recommendation appeared on my Kindle.

Feast., Fast. Fit. by Fred Duncan.

It wasn't new information for me.

Heck, I preach it.

It's worked in the past.

I believe it will work again.

The lesson?

It isn't get on the diet train...

... it's ask the right questions,
and expect answers.

  • How can I get lean?
  • How can I climb faster?
  • How can I stay cool in the blistering heat?
  • How can I complete a century without bonking?
  • How can I reduce the drag created by my bike and body?

Try not.

Ask or ask not.

THOU SHALT CARE FOR THY HANDS

TAKING CARE OF THE HANDS is importante.  Road, is pretty straight forward.  So is MTB.  Gravel, well, it's got it's own challenges...

... what can we do?

I've seen plenty of ruined hands...

  • brutal gripshift blisters
  • palms filled with asphalt gravelly stuff
  • a thumb's skin pealed from under the nail past the first knuckle

... all of it could have been spared with gloves.

Personally, I prefer very lightweight fullfinger gloves.

But, that ain't gonna help on the gravel bike.

No suspension.

What can we do?

I double wrap my bars with a good soft tape.

  • helps with vibration
  • displaces pressure points across a wider area

I was reminded of how great this is just last week.

It'd been a while since I'd ridden the roadie, been riding the gravel bike on and off road a ton.

As soon as I got going the bars felt weird.

Sharp.

Oh yeah, the single wrap bar.

It's lighter.

More aero.

But, I'd never go back to a single wrap on the gravel bike.

WHICH NUMBERS ARE WE CHASING?

THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE between the kinds of numbers some of us focus on putting up.  Some chase big power numbers, while others chase small numbers...

... what's the corresponding motivation?

You know.

Are we more interested in the low numbers: 1st, 2nd, 3rd...

... or, increasing our own personal power numbers?

Do we need everybody to see us on the podium...

... or, are we thrilled when we privately snag a new PR?

We can go out to the race,
or we can design our own incredible adventure.

We can train to beat everybody,
or our training can help us live our best lives.

They're not necessarily mutually exclusive,
there are four seasons for a reason.

IS IT TIME TO STOP BINGING?

SATURDAYS ARE MY DAYS.  All week long, I look forward to getting up early and rolling out with no particular plan but wasting time via hours in the saddle...

... I call it binge riding.

Not today.

It was raining

When that happens on the 6th day of the week,
my day,
I'm typically grumpy.

This time,
I was looking forward to it.

Why?

Honestly, I'd been binge riding too much.

Too many days in a row spent
slipping out after work
staying out too long...

... the time change being my enabler.

I was unconsciously due for a break.

Some call it overtrained...

... overbinged is more accurate,
for me.

THE OL' WHAT IF YOU KNEW...

THESE TWO PUNKS SHOWED UP TO MY HOUSE, and dragged their dear ol' dad out for his favorite thing.  Riding MTBs with them...

... that wasn't the best part.

Sure, it was fun to keep up with 'em.

Mostly.

Then, completely overdoing it at Cheesecake factory.

The best part was dropping by the Audi store...

... and hotrodding around in a $70k RS3.

So.

Dang.

Fast!

It's good to get in the dream car, and throw it around some corners...

... to keep the dreams alive.

But, what if it wasn't a dream.

What if...

... you knew you could PR any segment, win any race?

What would it be?

If we don't know,
can't quickly answer the question..

... likely not going to happen.

But,
what
if
we
knew...

... then,
what would we do with today's training?

JUST BECAUSE IT'S FREE MEANS...

SO MUCH INFORMATION, and so much of it free.  Free is a weird price, because we know it's gonna cost time and there's probably...

... an ask down the road.

Don't be fooled.

Sometimes the really expensive stuff is great,
sometimes it's terrible.

Same for free.

Price is a signal.

Should we be swayed?

I recently got an offer to save 30% on a $6000 frame.

6K!!!...

... must be awesome.

Maybe.

But, how do we know?

Really?

The glossy magazine ad?

The pro riding it to a win?

It can be frustrating.

When it comes right down to it, most of us...

... are swayed by our friends' reviews.

DOES YOUR DOG BITE?

THE GREAT INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU encounter with a dog is classic.  The dog is off leash, he asks Does your dog bite? The answer is, No.  He bends to pet the dog...

... only to have the dog viciously latch on to his hand!

I thought you said your dog does not bite?

That is not my dog.

I thought about that since Surfergirl has...

  • demanded
  • pleaded
  • asked

... that I let her track me on my rides.

I feel like a dog on a leash.

The Jason Bourne in me wants none of that.

There's nothing to hide,
when I ride.

But, really?

She does have a point.

I often venture into the wild.

Signs with warnings of mountain lions and snakes about.

Trails are often treacherous to the bike,
and potentially me.

Humans few and far between.

If, if, if I should need a rescue,
which I never have...

... I'll just need two things.

A cell signal...

... and a friend who cares.

It's kinda romantic when ya think about it,
guess we're doing all right.

HOW MY LITTLE PRACTICE LOOP TOOK ME DOWN

I SET OFF TO POUND MY PRACTICE LOOP.  The profile is jagged, lots of single track, and...

... I'm trying to crack 90 minutes.

Today's failure is why it's so important to practice racing.

Here's the dill.

This course is very hard to stay fueled on...

... almost impossible to drink, forget about eating.

Which meant I was tuckered out, with 4 miles to go.  The last 30ish minutes are pretty dern steep.

With about 20 minute warm up,
winging it on 1/2 bottle and 100 calories was a weak effort.

Just not enough.

Strava called a Massive Relative Effort,
giving the workout a score of 192.

I'll try it again in a couple of weeks.

This time with 400 calories,
and 30 ounces of water,
in a Camelbak.

There just isn't time to suck on a bottle,
the bladder hose is easy to grab,
and once in my mouth,
handsfree.

Ya can't figure that out without simulating what ya might be racing...

... in real world conditions.

SPEED AND BRAKES, NOT ALWAYS OBVIOUS

THERE'S A TECHNICAL, ROCKY SECTION on part of a local trail.  First-timers walk it, new riders use a slow approach, locals...

... let it rip.

They know something.

Speed makes it much easier to glide over the the treachery.

It's counterintuitive.

Disc brakes are the same way.

They rub.

We pry 'em apart and reinsert the wheel.

Soon into the ride they are rubbing again.

Why?

The pads are worn out.

You'd think they would stop touch the disc or barely work when running thin.

That's the way rim brakes work when the pads are worn down.

Not discs.

Counterintuitive.

Which why we alwaysalwaysalways check our brake pads before a race...

... so we hit the tricky stuff with speed.

DO YOU D.H.T.?

WE MAY NOT BE PRO.  Our equipment may be lacking, our preparation woeful, our  focus far from singular...

... which makes it all the more impressive.

When we, you and me...

... Do Hard Things.

Just like the pros,
but on a whole other level.

They level up,
get a pay check.

Our objective has nothing to do with money, and...

... everything to do with commitment.

Here's the cool part.

People see it.

Our family, friends, work associates, neighbors, etc.

They get inspired.

Maybe not to ride 100 miles or run a marathon or do an Ironman.

Doesn't matter.

The ability to D.H.T. can be applied to anything...

  • changing diapers in the middle of the night
  • studying instead of clubbing
  • making 100 cold calls/day
  • working 80 hrs a week for a season
  • pushing a car off to the side of the road
  • leading volunteers to repair after a disaster strikes

... once we learn we have it within us.

WE NEED A METRIC FOR THIS

THE FIRST TIME I SAW SHIMANO'S INTEGRATED SHIFTING, dubbed SIS, I knew there was no chance in a sprint without it.  Sure we'd perfected the lost of art of...

... sprinting, letting go of the handlebars with one hand to shift.

But, what was the point?

It was useless.

Shimano changed the game, all because...

... Gripshift had changed the game.

Gripshift morphed into SRAM.

Shimano gave us electric shifting.

SRAM did it better with wireless.

How is that my new Kindle got me thinking of this?

Simple.

Kindle changes the reading game.

Which got me thinking about another game changer, Training Peaks.

It's pretty cool.

All kinds of data.

But, one metric is missing and would...

... be so funny to have.

A measurement for how bad a ride sucks...

  • Freezing rain
  • Frying pan heat
  • Mile long hike-a-bike
  • Gail force headwinds
  • Countless mechanicals

... indicating our badassness for getting it done,
not quitting.

For example, we rolled the dice this morning on a 38% chance of rain.

No big deal, right?

3 hours in, we face another hour of driving headwind and relentless rain...

... the suckometer was needling past halfway.

  • Hands were edging towards inoperable.
  • Too wet and involved to eat carbs
  • Feet sloshing

Not terrible.

But, somewhere on the ride data it woulda been nice to see...

... the badassometer read out.

Just fer fun.

See where the day's suckiness ranked against other such rides over time.

Time to go back the Kindle...

... under the blankies.

Me still cold.

LEARNING TO RIP FROM MARCH MADNESS

BALL AND STICK SPORTS are typically concerned with, and built around, offense and defense.  How do we...

... apply that thinking to our endurance addictitions?

Do we have offense?

Defense?

Yep.

Offense

  • Riding, running swimming time
  • Weight lifting
  • Racing and competitive group rides
  • Upgrading equipment - new, shiny stuff
  • Hiring a coach
  • Fine tuning the bike fit
  • Developing our handling skills

Defense

  • Recovery work
  • Sleep
  • Proper nutrition
  • Accountability partner(s)
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Stretching
  • Allies to work with when falling behind

And before you say I've misplaced one of those, we all know...

... the best defense is offense and visa versa.

That's not the point.

The point is to figure out...

... how to incorporate a great offense and defense in our limited time.

TWO OF LIFE'S MYSTERIES

THERE TWO MYSTERIES THAT SCIENCE can't explain.  AI doesn't have the answer, either. But's they are facts just the same.  For example...

... why do beginners get all the flats?

Riddle me that one LycraMan.

You know it's true.

You know if you invite a new, excitedtobethere, rider along, there's gonna be a flat.

Waywaywayway more often than the experienced riders will experience.

Makes no sense.

Just like why more bike shops don't have a comfy couch to wait for that...

.... just a few more minutes...

repair.

Maybe a coffee table showcasing

  • A colorful catalog of their favorite products
  • Samples of their go to sports drinks or things to chomp
  • Gotta have tools to check out

I was thinking of another mystery as I swapped out my worn disc brake pads...

... why more of us don't learn the basics of maintenance.

THE PRIDE CYCLE QUEST

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE THAT YOU'RE PROUD OF?  Could be anything, but let's stay on point with athletic endeavors because it's important...

... to harness this concept.

The Pride Cycle Quest.

It's also dangerous,
if we let it get the best of us.

For me, at least, it's all about the quest.

Can I do it?

And, it's a cycle...

  • Pick the outrageous result to chase
  • Train for it.
  • Do it.

... and pick another quest.

I don't really care if anybody else thinks it's cool,
so few understand us anyway.

It's internal.

Am I proud of that result?

It's only dangerous if we are chasing likes and kudos and cheers...

... from the world.

It's not about that.

It's about the quest.

It's personal.

I'm happiest when I have at least one per year.

That's my cycle of pride.

CHASING GHOSTS

PATHS BECOME TRAILS, trails become roads, roads become highways.  It's evolution, and underneath it all are the ghosts...

... who got it started.

We think we're blazing a trail,
when we are really just going along with the crowd.

I was thinking about the day my longgone granpappy came to watch me race a criterium.

It was all new to me.

We wizzed past him every lap.

But, the laps were long...

... and he could barely see at that stage.

Afterwards, he told me how it was years before, when he was young.

I thought it would be in a velodrome and I'd be able to see you entire race.

Clueless me had no idea velodrome racing was the only bicycle racing 100 years ago.

Prior to that, it was racing bicycles long distance, on dusty...

... gravel roads.

In other words, we gone from...

  • gravel
  • to velodrome
  • to road
  • to bmx
  • to mtb
  • to gravel

... so why is gravel "new"?

It's not.

We're all just chasing ghosts who've gone before.

THIS AIN'T NO TIME FOR FOOLING AROUND

WHAT IS THE BASELINE?  The minimum effort to do and consider the week a win?  It's important to have the least acceptable effort in mind...

... and make it happen.

Riding in the rain will make you think things like that.

Like, why the heck am I doing this?

Which is exactly what I was thinking as the skies opened an hour away from home.

Because I made a plan.

A public commitment.

Accountability.

Yesterday, in the sunshine and 72 degrees I committed to do the following this week:

  • 15 pull ups, 50 push ups, 10 squats daily
  • Ride 14 hours this week
  • Drop 3 lbs

Easy to do when the weather is good,
and the day lazy.

The public commit was to the RaceDay Rippers,
who also hold me accountable each week when we check in.

I'm two months out from my next quest, the SurfNSummit.

The plan is on my RaceDay Calendar.

Some say Show me your calendar and I'll know what important to you...

... and yes, Date Night better be on there each week.

WWDGD?! - 25 WEEKS TO GO

I FELT GOOD ENOUGH THIS WEEK TO DREAM of getting my fitness back and setting unrealistic goals.  Is there anything better than that?  Getting to a place to...

... dare to go for it.

After pushing hard for nearly 3 hours, we had a choice.

Take it easy or do the hurtful climb?

500' in a mile doesn't sound like much...

... unless it's the last climb of a fast day.

We were gonna skip it, and then Love Watts yelled...

... WWDGD!

Huh?

What Would David Goggins Do?!

There was no choice at that point, because all of us have streeeeeeeeetch goals this summer.

It was fine.

Slower than I'd like...

... but, compared to last week waywayway better.

And so the journey begins.

The countdown to Gravel Nationals.

Here's where I'm at.

You can see my fitness score at the very bottom.
Down from over 50%, 18 months ago.

Weight, 168ish.
Up 10 lbs, 18 months ago.

Vision is still messed up.
Way off from what I considered one of my few advantages racing off road.

Can I be ready September 8th, 2024?

It's gonna be fun,
and frustrating.

WWDGD?

Go for it.

WHEN THE RACE PLAN GOES TO HECK IN A HANDLEBAR

IT WAS A ROUGH START, things weren't going smoothly at all.  It was causing a lot of stress and internal turmoil.  Energy I'd hoped to reserve for...

Ayyyy, what to do?

What I always do...

  • My prep was perfect

I calmed down.

Focused on getting down to business.

Wound up having a spectacular day...

YOU INSURED FOR THAT?

WELL, THE BILLS ARE COMING and I'm thinking about you and me.  For years I've looked at health insurance as lame. Struggled mentally, sometimes economically...

... to pay that everlarger bill.

Why?

I never get sick.

Rarely, and I mean rarely, do I see a doctor.

I'm already doing all they would recommend to get better...

  • eat good
  • skip sugar
  • get plenty of rest
  • and workout regularly

... why would I spend the $ on insurance?

It feels like I'm being duped.

Well, there are these events called...

... accidents.

They happen,
and are almost completely unplanned.

So, yeah, my bills are coming in and I'm happy as being at the to of the podium at my A race...

... 'cause it looks like almost all of it covered.

Sucks to be out 1000s...

... but, way better than being out 100s of thousands.

Just putting this out there 'cause I love you...

... get covered, if ya ain't.

DO YOU LET POWER OR HR DETERMINE YOUR HARD VS EASY DAYS?

I HADN'T WORN MY HR MONITOR FOR DAYS.  It wasn't working consistently, so I left it parked in the drawer. Until today, I gave it a shot and it actually worked...

... it got me thinking about the levels of easy.

There's so easy...

  • I can barely feel the pedals
  • I can sing a song
  • I can easily talk
  • I am not sure

... and maybe a few more levels.

My goal today was to ride as close to the top of my Zone 2 as possible, without going over...

... the I'm not sure range.

I wasn't sure, because my heart rate was bouncing at the top of the range.  Meanwhile...

... my power was definitely over into a higher range quite often.

This is how I trained for decades, when I just had a HR monitor.

What's more important then...

... HR in Zone 2 or Power in Zone 2?

I'm gonna say, for me at least, HR is more important.  It is more reflective of how all systems are working given the effort and absorbs the little efforts when the terrain or other elements require a few more watts.

Here's a real world application.

When I'm racing something epic, like Leadville, I'm going off heart rate for my pacing, and using the power meter to keep things in check when I have to dig a little deeper to close a gap or clean a technical uphill section.

The reality is, for peak performance on the long efforts...

... it's good to have both.

If it's a short race, under an hour, well, you know...

... put the dadgum gadget in the back pocket and race on feel.

Same for a long day of adventuring, who cares about the data when we're out there.

Enjoy the ride.

We can analyze later.

SHOULD WE DO A HUNDRED RACES IN A YEAR?

YA WANNA GET GOOD, be a boss, strike fear in your frenemies, be the maker of things that happen...

... instead of wondering what happened?

Race.

A lot more.

100 times/year.

Think I'm crazy?

Think it's immmm po siiiiii ble?

Then don't do it.

Don't even try.

Keep wonderin',
misreading the moves.

Or, commit.

Do:

  • 2 zwifties
  • 2 local races
  • 2 group rides
  • 2 of your own personal courses for PR

We all have 52 chances a year,
to race twice a week.

No excuses.
Nothing but upside.

Heck, even a brain-damaged guy like me can do it.

This week...

  • hammering my xc race loop Tuesday
  • group ride on weekend

... slaying myself today, getting crushed by the fellas Saturday.

Gotta start somewhere.
Gonna do what hurts and what I'm comfortable with.

Twice a week.

Oh... I know you're askin'...

... Why 100 times a year?

Because, every race is different.

We'll see a lot of different situations.

We're trying to see 'em all, or have a reallyreallyreally good feel for what is going to happen.

Simple as that.

Experience counts.

Get some.

It's free.

NOT GONNA LIE

WHEN I FINALLY CAME TO, I had one thing on my mind.  Not after first being knocked out, not after the morphine and other meds wore off, days after being home...

... I wanted to say one thing.

Not gonna lie.

I was hurting.

Stunned.

How could my crazy good health take such a drastic turn in seconds...

... this wasn't what I had planned for 2024.

8 weeks later, I'm improving.

I'd leave it there, but...

... not gonna lie.

I'm nowhere near where I was just prior, nor 12 months ago, nor 2 years ago.

I'm off.

I can work 4-5 hours,
then my brain needs a break.

I can ride my bike,
but I have no power,
off-road vision is shift.

I can talk to friends,
until I can't.

Something even more weird happened though.

Something few will admit or acknowledge or maybe even notice...

... when I took that blow to the noggin' it felt like my spirit left my body.

There's a disconnectedness.

I know things aren't quite right.

Will they return or is life just going to be different?

Not gonna lie...

... this is new territory.

Now, I'm being as honest and transparent as possible in all I do.

My friend battling cancer taught me that,
the freedom of being honest.

Yes, I hid it from Surfergirl that on one of my first bike rides alone I was going down the road and thought I saw 4 ducks crossing the road in front of me...

... it was just two,
that's troubling.

Not gonna lie.

I kept riding.

Lying to myself it was all good,
hiding the truth if asked.

What is easier, being honest with ourselves and those around us or pulling the lycra over our eyes and theirs?

To remind myself of my new commitment...

... I made a special kit, see above.

That's the kind of thing I was looking forward to in 2024.

New designs,
new patterns,
new fabrics.

The good newsy stuff.

If you're into the rawness of honesty, maybe you'll like this too.

It's patterned after one of my all-time favorite Porsche's.

HE SWITCHED TEAM, AND IT...

TODAY AN AMERICAN WON PARIS-NICE, an 8-Day stage race in France.  A youngun, 25 years old.  He'd never done it before, and wasn't picked as a favorite...

... except he picked himself.

A long time ago.

When riding for a less professional, less scientific team he was spending his own cash on equipment and training to up his game.

Something the top teams covered and pursued relentlessly.

He jumped at the chance to upgrade to the current dominant force in European road racing this season.

Would it matter?

I'd say it is clear.

What's interesting is how many of are trapped like a monkey...

... failing to let go, when we know we should.

Not only did he upgrade his team and training, but placed a huge bet on himself in a daring and startling breakaway with fellow US racer Brandon McNulty.

When you are a pro...

... winning actually is everything.

Way to go Mateo Jorgenson.

HOW TO GET FASTER FOR DUMMIES

APPARENTLY, LOVE WATTS FORGOT our commitment to go easy on the way up the coast.  Which meant we had time to do the biggest climb I've done this year...

... 2 hours and 2000' of climbing for our "warm up".

At the usual time, riders flocked in and we were off.

It felt good to do my first group ride of the year...

  • to see the guys
  • get whooshed along
  • and see some higher power numbers

... until the first overpass.

Where I was off the back.

Caught on at a light.

Off again.

On again.

My breathing and wheezing needed a muffler.

On the next power climb, normally 2ish minutes...

... I needed an extra minute or three.

They were gone.

Yeah, they are nowhere near as fast as I am...

... they're a heckuvalot faster.

Am I good with that?

Yeah, they've always been faster than lit'l ol' me.

Now I just need patience to close the gap to where...

... they are less faster.

So, here's the plan that I've used many a year...

... pick a spot beyond where I got popped today.

Make it just a little further each week.

Corner by corner,
Hill by hill.

Progress > Perfection

IT WAS ABOUT THE TRUTH, NOT ARMS RACE

I HATE TIMETRIALS.  I mean, I like 'em, but, yeah, I hate 'em.  It's not because I'm not great at 'em, and trust me I'm not.  It's because...

... they hurt so dang bad.

Not only that, it's...

  • lonely
  • painful
  • humbling

... is there anything more truthful than getting passed by your minute man?

No drafting.
No wily cunning.

Nothing matters except...

... who is the strongest,
and who can suffer the most.

Oh, wait, one more thing matters...

... who's got the most money to afford the most advanced gear.

When everything tiny thing adds time and seconds matter...

... it can turn into an arms race.

I'm okay with that to a point.

Butttttttttt, don't ya think participation would rise...

... if we raced Merckx-style?

At least at the amateur level?

On our road bikes vs tt bikes?
With road helmets?
And "normal" road wheels?
And... you get the point right?

As much as I hate/love a tt, I truly appreciated Tucson Bicycle Classic for making their tt be done on road bikes the last to years.

It's just a lot more fair/approachable/inviting...

... and equally miserable for all.

That's the truth.

Side note:  I think I love XC MTB racing because it's basically a mass start time trial.  The terrain naturally and quickly separates us.

WERE YOU AS DORKY AS THIS?

WHEN I WAS JUST GETTING INTO THE SPORT, I was such a dork.  A small percentage of you will disagree, maybe even swear at me, but nothing says...

... stay clear, like a mirror.

I know, I know, some of us are damaged and can't look over our shoulders.

Too stiff,
crap balance.

I was neither of those.

I was a spry young newb.

Excited to ride and race.

And my girlfriend of the time wanted to get me something cool.

I quickly mounted the mirror to the end of my handlebar - see pic above.

I thought it was rad.

Perfect for the high speeds and shoulder banging of crit racing,
which I loved.

Rather than turn my head and telegraph my plans,
I could take a peek at my mirror.

Nobody else thought it was cool...

... and they made an obnoxious and clear point of it.

If my hairy legs,
questionable bike handling,
roadrashed arms and legs weren't a give away...

... the mirror, made it clear.

I was not to be trusted in the bunch.

Here's the dill.

They were right.

Because let's face it, anybody focused on the past...

... doesn't have a shot at a winning future.

I DON'T ALWAYS RIDE IN THE RAIN...

I COULD SEE THE STORM BREWING.  Like a crazy fool, I rolled out anyway even though I was certain to...

... get caught in the rain.

Trust me, I am a fair weather rider.

Gimme 70 degrees,
and a lite breeze.

So why ride?

Two reasons.

One embarrassing.
One legit...

  • Poorly executed work day
  • It rains on raceday
  • Commitment

Yeah, I had all this work scheduled and a timeline to follow....

... and, well, ya know, things didn't go as planned.

That's 1.

Since it does rain on raceday, and I've never let that stop me from lining up...

... it's good to practice from time to time.

That's 2.

And I committed to myself to get my slothful self back in shape.

That's 3, a bonus.

So which one's embarrassing?

  • crap planning
  • useless prep
  • silly commitment

Well, I dunno about you...

... but, I'm cool with

  • keeping my commitments,
  • being prepared for all conditions,
  • even when things don't go as planned.

IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME!

I WOULD CLIMB ANY MOUNTAIN, ride across the stormy sky.  It seemed like I'd waited a lifetime, spent so much time in recovery...

... it felt like the first time!

The MTB.

Like it never did before,
like I'd opened up the door.

Finally!

What is it?

I guess it's just the rawness of nature,
bringing out the rider in me.

Dawgawn I'd missed it.

Carving turns,
wiggling up technical sections,
brushing the thistles,
hanging my lycra off the back in the steeps.

Why today?

Well, to be honest, today was a breakthrough on my vision.

The double-vision I've been dealing with was greatly diminished.

Partly time.
Partly exercises for my eyes.

Dec 19, 2018 TODD BROWN

AS WE ROARED UP THE COAST IN THE WAKE OF THE AWESOME AND FEARED SWAMI'S CHOO CHOO TRAIN, it occurred to me...

Most of these cats don't know me... and a few do.
If I'd failed to point something out or been less than smooth or skipped a pull...
Most of these cats will scream Bloody hell!...
and a few will give me a pass.
Unsurprisingly, nothing happened.
Unsurprisingly, if it had... I'd given myself a pass.  Would you?

WIN THE DAY

WIN THE DAY

Dec 18, 2018 TODD BROWN

WIN THE DAY!  Win the day? Win the day... yawn.

Suddenly, there are all these morning ritual movements (pun?).  People touting this approach and that method...

Make your bed/Read a book/Meditate/...

My friend Todd Schooler, may he rest in peace, used to make fun of the guys who skipped our Tuesday ride... said they had Rollover disease.

How do we win the day?
We ride first,
before life gets in the way.
Be it cold and dark
or sunny and warm.

LOOPER OR LINER?

LOOPER OR LINER?

Dec 17, 2018 TODD BROWN

ARE YOU A LOOPER OR A LINER?  Me, I'm a looper. I like figuring my morning loop to match my allotted time.  Might be one big loop, or a few loops.  But, I'm definitely a looper.

Some are liners.  They had out, South let's say.  Figure there's an hour to burn, turn around and head North at minute 30.

There are some liner routes I like, but they need to be epic. Like Leadville, where you go out for 50 miles and an ungodly (actually godly) amount of climbing then turnaround.  The closer we get to that turnaround the more people we see who are already on the return.  Knowing how far back is motivating... most of the time.

But, the big loop... bigger the better, is my favorite.  Our HUNKR LA loop was giant and challenging and oh so scenic.  The changing scenery, never the same... love that. The Swami's Long loop is so dang fast and hard... but it's a loop and if you're shameless you can cut across town and catch back on.  Our TMWC loop is a classic, 1 hourish scoot around town comprised of flats and hills and bike trails and The Wall and The Corkscrew... I should be permanently dizzy I've done it so many times.

What's yours?
Would you live your life that way?
Build your business that way?
Raise your kids that way?
Doesn't matter which way,
Just wanna gear up and get on my way.

LESS THAN I COULD CHEW

LESS THAN I COULD CHEW

Dec 15, 2018 TODD BROWN

BECAUSE IT WEIGHS A TON, IS DEEP FRIED AND COVERED IN GLAZE... the Apple Fritter was the only thing that was going to save me from my glycogen depletion.  I had to have it, had to make it to SC Donuts, prayed they have one left for me - they usually sell out by Noon.

I blame it on getting all geeked up last night about the 2019 season.  I couldn't wait to get out today and start a massive block of zone 2 riding.  4 hrs was my goal.  Only problem was I left with 3 hours of food, and... I was sporting the Tour D' Donut jersey.

Who needs a GU when a 1000 calorie fritter can more than top things off?!

The ride turned out to be just what I needed.  It hadn't been easy turning down Mike and Eric's offer to do Swami's Long, Chris and Brian's plan to attack Saddleback, or Tim's mixed-surface mayhem on Blackstar. They all sounded so fun.  But, what I really needed today was an adventure, some play time... just cruising and going wherever the wheels would take me.

Matt and I rode road, gravel, dirt, single track at a solid zone 2... then he peeled off, leaving me with 90 minutes of more of the same.

Not in a hurry
Smelling the wind.
Feeling the flowers.
Conjuring the fritters.

CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I DID THIS.

CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I DID THIS.

Dec 14, 2018 TODD BROWN

A FEW OF US GOT TOGETHER FOR DINNER TONIGHT - the local crew that rides together a couple of times a week.  We don't race much.  The idea was to find some events we could all do together.

We weren't looking to have some grandmasterflash plan of race domination.  It's unlikely we'll be in the same categories.  More... we wanted to find a destination race or two plus some local stuff we could make a day of.  A comrade kinda thing.

Gotta be honest... I've been a little burned out.  Mike says I still haven't recovered from LoToJa '17... and he may be right.

But, there's nothing like hanging out with the fellas... geeking out over races... thinking of what's involved - logistics, training, equipment... to get pumped up.

We picked out a few good ones.
Things start early 'round here.
It's time to get focused.

WE MAKE IT HERE

WE MAKE IT HERE

Dec 13, 2018 TODD BROWN

WE MOVED NEARLY ALL OUR PRODUCTION TO THE U.S. THIS YEAR.  The main reasons were better product development, quality control and faster turnaround.  What used to take 2 months, takes a few weeks.  We right from the ride or race to the design studio.  If there's an issue we can fix it in a day or two.  Building the team here has been the most rewarding, and challenging, business experience in my lifetime.

There are just a few more days left for our American elves to make Christmas morning magic, and we're cranking long into the night.

Then, we'll take some time off for family and reflection and L.S.D. rides... hopefully, we'll see you on a new bike or in a new kit or enjoying some time off... or all 3.

WE DON'T HAVE TO...

WE DON'T HAVE TO...

Dec 12, 2018 TODD BROWN

HOW COOL IS IT GET A GREAT PICTURE OF YOURSELF?!!

Some hotshot photographers set up on remote sections of a race course, with thousands of dollars of equipment and at least as many hours in honed and practiced skill.  The sun beats down on them or the rain drenches them or the cold gets into their bones... and we, you and I, whiz on by... while they work all day, then all night prepping and uploading photos... and then they pray.

They pray we will pay,
just a couple a bucks,
for a beautiful image...
to foreveremember,
an epic day.
We don't have to buy one,
but if we do we'll really burn in that memory,
all the emotion the gifted photographer caught...
for just a couple a bucks.

BREAKTHROUGHS

BREAKTHROUGHS

Dec 11, 2018 TODD BROWN

BREAKTHROUGHS ARE WEIRD.  We work and work and work to get better and seemingly get nowhere.  Then, as if touched by the gods, we are magically better.  The leap in improvement seems overnight.

But, that's not really how it works.

The effort, the probing, the trying new things, etc... like the straw that broke the camel's back... eventually breaks us through to... better.

Works every time.  Persistence pays.

Just not how we think.

For instance... somehow my chess rating has jumped about 150 points in the last month... this is after a year of playing, and months stuck at the lower rating.  Can't really place my finger on when it happened, but one day I took a different approach and it worked.

Or... my quest to drop 10 lbs.  Been on that for a couple of years.  Trying all kinds of kooky stuff... then last summer I stumbled upon my fruit 'till noon.  Bam, I'm down 10.

Next up... it's not settled 100%, but I'm thinking of going for my PR on Harding.

STANDARDS

STANDARDS

Dec 10, 2018 TODD BROWN

JUST IN:  WEIGHT OF A KILOGRAM UPDATED IN 2018.  K, it's not just Just In... it happened a month or so ago and you can bore yourself here.  But, let's just consider the ramifications for us racers who cut our bike weight to the legal limit set by the UCI - if you buy an off the shelf superawesome bike it'll be lower than "legal".

I don't really care if you bike is below legal, that's for you to have sleep with each night... but, it is interesting to note the role standards play.

It's almost impossible to believe that all countries didn't have the same kilogram standard, but it was true for many years.  Or that we are adjusting it ever so slightly in the 21st Century.  It's been around since 1889.  All fine and all true.

Will that happen to the Kilometer as well?  Will a HUNKR, no longer be a the same distance?  Ever so slightly longer or shorter?

Without agreed upon standards of measurement, science, reliable science, would proceed much slower... if at all.  It would be chaos and constantly starting over.  With standards, the big-brained can collaborate and quickly build on each other's work.

As the scientists rush to refine their standards... what about ours?

WE START TO FINISH

WE START TO FINISH

Dec 08, 2018 TODD BROWN

I HAD EVERY INTENTION OF STARTING TODAY'S DIRTY 30, and no intention of racing it.  But, then I pulled in and saw the Start banners and the Finish arch.  Well... once you throw your I'm just gonna have fun plan out the window all kinds of things can happen.

For me, the best was meeting Paul from Velofix.  I asked if he planned on working much, he said Racers come prepared, should be a light day. And just like that I remembered how awful my cranks have felt all summer.

He brought in Adam who said, Dude, that's 200 watts easy.

What?

The drag.

What's causing it?

You're missing a washer which is causing the seal to bind.  This is terrible.

Being that I haven't focused much on mountain bike racing I'm not surprised I neglected my rig's maintenance.  That also goes a long way to explaining my truly disheartening performance on TMWC Gravel this week, and last Saturday's slog to Cocktail Rock.

The best racers are always good mechanics... and boy, have I ever failed at this.

Which brings me back to the title.  We start to finish.

We start every race/ride to finish it.

Nobody starts with the intention of quitting.  Quitters never finish.

But, it's not just finishing.

I could have finished today, even giving up all those watts.  But, by default it would have been less than my best.  My best would have seen to it that the rocket was ready to shoot skyward vs a sputter and flame out.

If I'm gonna start something, the goal is to finish as best as possible.  That's it.

_____

What a beautiful day ahead.

Among the first to set up

Adam, gettin' 'er dialed in

Chris comes through with the Mexican Coke!

Plenty a peeps

Not too shabby... I started with the wrong wave, but Timing said gaps wouldn't have made a difference.  Just happy to be here...

ONE OF THESE DAYS

ONE OF THESE DAYS

Dec 07, 2018 TODD BROWN

JUST AS I WAS CERTAIN I COULD SELL HVY MTL (my accidentally wrong "gravel" bike that's a touring bike)... along comes Haruto.  I could see him from 200 meters away.  Bright green vest swinging easily from side to side, kinda doing a wind dance.

I pulled up.

Hey, where did you stay last night?

A friend.  Couchsurfing.com.  Too much rain.  All this bubbles out of this kid with a smile to brighten any day and a constant giggle.  Not so much talking as singing his song.

Where did you start?

Canada.

Where are you going? ... I'm thinking TJ...

Argentina.

What?  Really?

Yes.  Buenos Aires.  Then Europe.

How long will that take?

I hope 6 months.  Some say a year.

Are you going down Baja?

Oh yes!  It's very pretty. ... and dangerous, I keep to myself ...

Tijuana not so good.

Yes, be careful.

Do you speak Spanish?

No... yo soy Japon.  (I'm Japan).

Yo so Japones...

Yes, yes... yo so Japones!

The entire exchange is just smiles and laughing. It makes me happy, just riding along side him for a few minutes made all the difference in my day.

I think he'll be fine.
But, wouldn't hurt to pray for him.
And us...
That we'd have the guts to do any of it...
Yo so gringo!

PROTEIN

PROTEIN

Dec 06, 2018 TODD BROWN

PRETTY SURE I LOST A LOT OF MUSCLE FRUIT TILL NOON.  Not enough protein.  The Ask A Cycling Coach podcast covered protein a bit last week.  Just in time for The Old Diesel to get some guidelines.

Quick takeaways:

1.  Protein aids recovery.
2.  High intensity, LSD, weightlifting all demand protein right after.
3.  Master athletes need even more protein.
4.  Per FDA 1 gram protein/kg of body weight.  Endurance and Masters athlete 2 grams/kg of bw.
5.  Types of protein:  Whey and Casein both milk proteins.  Whey is most absorbable.  Casein longer to absorb.  Both have Lucine. If you're lactose intolerant  there are options with whey and plant based.
6.  Chocolate milk is great.  Protein, and sugar.  Available at gas stations after a ride.
7.  Masters should take protein just prior to bed.  Helps with recovery and helps with sounder sleep.

The biggest is weight loss while neglecting protein is a fail.  I think that's where I am right now.  Wonder how long it will take to get back... had a protein shake in the morning, carne asada for lunch, taco soup for dinner.

Here's the podcast... protein talk starts Min 36:38.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/nose-breathing-recovery-drinks-double-days-more-ask/id1035433041?i=1000424759191&mt=2

... remember, you get what you pay for and this cost you exactly zero... : )

HANDY DANDY VANDY

HANDY DANDY VANDY

Dec 05, 2018 TODD BROWN

MOST OF MY WRENCHING IS SELF-TAUGHT.  My tools, a mishmash collection in what looks like an old school doctor's bag.  When bikes were less awesome I did a lot my own work for the simple sake of I was faster and usually better than the shop.

But, now the bikes are so much better... and so much more complicated.

What does break or need adjustin' usually requires special tools I might only use once... assuming I even know what to do.  So I don't buy the tools and a let a pro do what I can't.

Lack of practice = skills lost.

I put what's left of the ol' skills and tools to use today.

Not on the bike.  The car.

Battree was dead.  Alternator good.  AAA wanted $125 + installation and tax.

Hmmmmm, me thought.  Costco.com.  72 bones.

Busted out the 10mm socket wrench, which you would only have if you worked on fancy international bike parts... well, that's my excuse.  Hauled the old battree over and picked up the new one.

Plopped it in.  Cinched 'er down.  Fired up real dandy.  Like a champ.

Time to sell it.

Even though this car has carried me to numerous podiums and excellent rides, I don't expect you to want it.  I'm mean who'd want mojo like that?

A RIDER'S LIFE AIN'T NO GOOD LIFE

The sky light cracks at dawn
I'm out the door long gone
Listen to them wheels
That chain
I'm gone riding
Again

Lunch time comes sneaking past Noon
I'm promisin' 'be back soon
Listen to them wheels
That chain
I'm gone riding
Again

Shadows stretchin' and yellin' end of day
I'm changin' and gettin' on my way
Listen to them wheels

TOO LITE?

TOO LITE?

Dec 03, 2018 TODD BROWN

MIGHTA OVER DONE IT... my fruit-till-noon body hack might be too successful.  I've dropped about 13 pounds since August.  Just eating fruit till Noon.

Too much.  Too fast?

I dunno.

I do know that I don't feel awesome and powerful.

There was a cross over about a month ago where I PR'd The Wall - local 4-5 minute power climb.  It's been down scale and down hill since.

Could also be I'm just burned after a month of heavy weekend races.

Time to bring it back up to the original goal of 160-162.  Still 10 lbs. lighter.

Why does the fruit-till-noon work?  Well, I'm not scientist but I can tell you this.  If you start off your day eating pure, good food that's all you want to eat the rest of the day.  The cravings for crap disappear.  Then, all of the sudden you're just eating good stuff and poof you drop 13lbs.

THE FIRST CUT

THE FIRST CUT

Dec 01, 2018 TODD BROWN

I HEARD A BOXER SAY HE NEEDS TO GET HIT A FEW TIMES TO GET INTO IT.  Then, again Mike Tyson said everybody has a plan until they get punched in the nose.  I'm a lover not a fighter... but, I can tell you this...

On the way up San Juan Trail this morning, I was a little out of it.  Just wasn't on my A game.  Especially on the rocky, rooty downhill section past Cocktail Rock.  Was riding like a baby.  Coulda been the cold.  Coulda been the moisture and sliminess.  Whatever it was, I was riding terrible.

Then, I got that first cut.
Followed by a sweet crank to the shin.
Just like that,
I snapped out of it,
cranked up Foo Fighters in my mind,
and started haulin' @$$.
The rest of the ride was ace.
Hero dirt.
Carving turns.
Wheeling up and jumping off rocks.
Soaking in that amazing view.
Soaring like a diesel.
That shin.

THIS TIME IT WON'T HURT

THIS TIME IT WON'T HURT

Nov 30, 2018 TODD BROWN

LAST TIME I TOOK THE CREW UP ON SAN JUAN TRAIL, we shed a lot of blood.  It was summer.  And so dry. The DG (decomposed granite) was like ice.  The sides of the trail like a Makita grinder.  The thick brush wasn't much better.  But, that's how a I like it.

Everybody returned with scrapes and gashes.

I warned 'em the first time that they'd come back with a tale to tell, with proof they're alive, lingering memories.  The trail delivered.

Shocking few wanted to go tomorrow.

This time I promised it wouldn't hurt.  Not because we've improved orr skills, not because we've seen the trail before... because it actually rained in California!

Rain on most trails means things are gonna be worse.
Rain on SJT means hero dirt,
lots of gripping and ripping,
... like a powder day,
or glassy 6' surf...
Oh well,
I tried.

THE ART OF TAILORED WHEELS

THE ART OF TAILORED WHEELS

Nov 29, 2018 TODD BROWN

THAT'S A BOLD STATEMENT UP THERE.  You better believe it you're gonna put that on your website.

Ryan does.

We met at a bike race.  <-- Note: one reason to go to a bike race is to meet some cool people that believe in what they do.

He had his Spark Wheel Works canopy up and his hands ready to help anybody that needed assistance, regardless of what they were running.

We got to chatting and he confidently explained what a tailored wheel was and what it could do for me.  I told him about a new set fo wheels I'd purchased from ENVE that were giving me problems.  He told me how to get them warranted.  Went out of his way to explain it even though I didn't buy the wheels from him.

See what I did there... just cut him off and told him about my problem.

See what he did there... listened and solved my problem.

So, what is a tailored wheel?  That's where you find a guy like Ryan who will listen to you, really listen to you.  Then, after he's listened to you, he'll show you exactly the wheelset you need for your next race or ride or new bike or...  wheels tailored just for you.

After I got me wheels back from ENVE, they had a bit of a hop and so I took them to him for an expert retentioning.

Can't wait to throw 'em back on The Marvel and shred at TMWC.

FIRST AID

FIRST AID

Nov 28, 2018 TODD BROWN

MY DAUGHTER ASKED HOW I WAS DOING?

Great, I think.  Why?

Seems like you've had a rough year.

'Guess I hadn't noticed.

She pointed out a few low lights, like losing my dad.  It's not a massive list, but there are a few sizable changes.  I agreed, then listed off all the wonderful things I'm thankful for... which turned out to be a longer, stronger list.

Life is a lot like racing.
There's the pain of the race.
The setbacks.
Unforeseen challenges and disappointment.
Yet, when it's all done.
When the season is over.
What do we remember?
What stands out?
Why go back?

There's not much a little time and a bike ride can't heal.

CONNECTION

CONNECTION

Nov 27, 2018 TODD BROWN

THE RECENT RAIN TURNED THE MOON DUST INTO HERO DIRT.

With a larger tire, lower pressure and wider rim the connection to the road is like velcro.

I like tight, tacky gloves when I sprint and climb.

The snap of my cleat assures me I can go all out.

When I pull and push the skewers I'm confident in their ability to hold things together.

Like so many links in a chain, the entire bike should be tightly connected and working as one.

But that's nothing compared to the connections we make with the people we ride with.

THE QUICKY

Nov 24, 2018 TODD BROWN

AFTER YESTERDAY'S GIANT BLACK FRIDAY RIDE, I just wanted to sleep in.  I got up early anyway.  Habit.  I didn't want to ride.  Not a habit.

We loaded up the van.  Drooled over at Cars and Coffee.  Hiked along the skyline above town.  Got ice cream at Handel's.  Did Nordstrom rack.  Ate leftovers.

An entire Saturday without a bike ride?... almost.

Finally at 4, the team was tuckered and distracted.

I'll be right back.  Just a quick spin.

38 minutes later, balance had been restored.

BIERMAN'S BLACK FRIDAY

BIERMAN'S BLACK FRIDAY

Nov 23, 2018 TODD BROWN

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  When we hit that first hill I almost turned around.

I kept my mouth shut.

You suckered me into the A group with all your bravado.

I looked away, didn't want him to see my huge smile.

When did you take off?

Uh, well, ya see it was Andy's fault...

I mean what are friends for?...

Of course I shamed Big Mike into riding with skinny Paul and the rest of the circus freaks that would lead the charge from behind. I planned to join in on the idiocy but Andy showed up on his cross bike and wanted to slow roll for the first bit before turning around and heading to his office.

And roll slow we did.  Until Andy cut off, and I saw that pink Strava Segment Starts Here sign.  At that point, I hit the burners in pursuit of the lead pack of the B group on the most terrible ride...

... Bierman's Black Friday is terrible...
60 miles, 6800' of vert
with many 20+% pitches
TERRIBLE

Terrible to the point I've always pulled out the Sorry man, family in town excuse.

But, this year I knew I could do it.  The kids were going to be scattered on Thanksgiving day and we'd have our family gathering Friday afternoon with pics and turkey dinner.

So Big Mike, Skinny Paul and I met off Ortega with the promise we'd come home right after.

It took a long time for the A-listers to catch up to the front of the B group.  When they blew by me at the aid station I tried like heck to catch on.  No luck.  Just chasing.

One of the those awful chases where you can make out each person clearly, then fuzzy, then gone.

Fortunately, I guess, Big and Skinny weren't in this lead group.  So I shut down my meager effort and limped along with George.  We chatted.  Took our time at fuel stops. Finally enjoying the scenery and beautiful day.

The high-desert, California terrain is incredible.  Nary a car to be seen.  Plus, Barry and Eric do a bang up job with fuel stations and exceptional course marking.  You won't get lost, except in thought.  You'll definitely get dropped... or, maybe win some cash like John.

We made it home an hour ahead of schedule which made Surfergirl very happy.

GRATEFUL FOR MEDICINE AND SHAMING

GRATEFUL FOR MEDICINE AND SHAMING

Nov 21, 2018 TODD BROWN

THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF MEDICINE ALL CYCLISTS NEED:  Modern Medicine and Shame.  How many of us would still be riding without these two ingredients?  While the modern part is obvious to me, is it to you?  And the shaming, where would you be without it?

Would I dare get on my bike:
Knowing an infection from a scrape could kill me?
A broken bone could permanently maim me?
A deep cut could drain my blood?

What kind of rider would I be if:
Schooler hadn't yelled Hold your line dumbass!?
Jeff hadn't publicly mocked my horrible pedaling technique and plodding cadence?
Nelson hadn't told me my thumb and at least one finger better be wrapped around the bar if I wanted to stay on the ride?

Too often we take the medical profession for granted.  The fact they are there as an incredible safety net gives us freedom to go out and ride our bikes.  Maybe we go too fast, take too many chances, but we can do it for years... for decades... usually they can put us back together.  So, thank a doctor/scientist/nurse/pharmacist/physical therapist/etc.

Too often we (me!) reacts negatively to the shaming.  Could the shaming be done more lovingly?  Probably.  But, would it be as impactful?  I dunno.  Next time I get yelled at, I'll try and see it from her point of view, apologize, and do a little better.

Most of us will never meet the professionals who make a difference.  I'll never meet the professors who taught my brother-in-law, Mike, medicine.  I'll never meet whoever told Nelson Vails to always keep your fingers looped around the bars - which has kept me steady over plenty of unseen potholes.  But, Mike and Nelson have counseled me with knowledge and shame.

Thank you to all the professionals in medicine and shaming!

(Mike... he had me at I ride bikes too... okay, you can marry my sister.)

GRATEFUL FOR LIGHTS AND NIGHTS

GRATEFUL FOR LIGHTS AND NIGHTS

Nov 20, 2018 TODD BROWN

MY FIRST NIGHT RIDE INCLUDED ME FLYING UPSIDE DOWN TRAVELING AT 20MPH, my bike crumpled and scarred far behind.  It's one of those things that you wonder if you're friends were inviting you to an adventure or an initiation.

It was both.

The lighting tech back then was appalling, and good ol' Scud gave me the worst of his best.  Think of a coal minor's light kinda thingy.  With a filament(!!!!) that looked about as sturdy as a two-legged chair.

Greatbiggiantwisdomnugget --> shadows give you depth perception.
No light, no shadows, no sense of depth.
One light mounted just above your eyeballs, practically no shadows, grim reaper is waiting for ya.

Got it?

It's all good on the first part of the ride.

We're poaching a trail in what is now Shady Canyon and what was then GetOffaMyIrvineCoLand.  The bikes weighed north of 30lbs, platform pedals, and brakes that only hinted at decelerating.

We were going slowly uphill.  Not using our lights, because the batteries - the D-cells - wouldn't last very long, wasn't going to be a problem I was promised.

It's a full moon Brownie.
More like a new moon Scud.

The later it got, the colder it got, the less my cutoffs seemed like a good idea.

But, we're dudes doing dude stuff so who cares?

We get to the top.

A super band erupts from Irvine Meadows.

We're getting amped up.

Scud yells Turn on yer light!

A shade of amber whimpers forth.

Scud's 50watt searchlight is drenching the landscape.

Time to rock!

The old hands, on their well-known trail take off.  The newb, me, shivers through their dusty mist.

I'm doing my best.  Mind you, I've got skills in daylight.  And lot's of pride too.  A lovely combination... WHEN THERE"S LIGHT!

You'd think... you'd think...

Well you would.  But, I wasn't.  I was racing for my life.

Their dust is getting lower, and their lights further into the distance.

My cranks are spinning, clipping rocks.  My wheels spinning too... me n the rig are all in.

Why am I am clipping rocks?  Everything looks so flat.

Right then I see an enormous round and flat rock.  If I was a giant I could skip it to Hawaii.  But, I'm not.  And it's not flat!

Remember that link of wisdom about needing shadows to have depth perception?  Well, what happens is that big flat rock a giant could skip is actually a big round rock.  'Bout 2 foot tall, 3 foot around.

I hit it square.
Wind up in the air.
Bike down there.

A bloody, dusty version of myself springs up.  We don't recognize each other.  I had no pride.  But bloody, dusty me did.

The guys found me.  Broken light.  Flat tire.  Bent rim.

Gee man, you okay?

Totally, just need a few minutes then I'll be ready.

You sure?

Totally.

PRO TIP:  Get a big, wide, powerful light for the bars (2000+ watts - 40x Scud's light).  Put a narrow, less powerful beam on your helmet.  The wide beam will give you lots of shadows and the narrow beam is great for looking around to set up corners or check other action... like lions, tigers and bears.

With the right set up, night riding brings a whole new dimension to riding.  Everything looks, sounds and smells different.

Winter time doesn't have to mean trainer time.

Don't ride alone.  It's not pro... but, I'm not always pro... just don't tell Surfergirl.

GRATEFUL: GROUP RIDES AND GAS STATIONS

GRATEFUL: GROUP RIDES AND GAS STATIONS

Nov 18, 2018 TODD BROWN

THE AVAILABILITY OF SO MANY QUALITY GROUP RIDES make every Saturday a potential race day.  Or Sunday.  Tuesday.  Wednesday. Thursday.  Friday.  Somehow Monday remains the sacred day of rest.  I'm a ride hard twice a week guy, so it's Tuesday and Saturday for me.

Saturday is the day to change up the routine.  Sometimes is SHoP, others Food Park or CV.  Those I can ride to from home.

What's really fun is to mix it up.  Travel to the other legendary group rides:  Swami's in San Diego, Donut in South Bay, Montrose in Montrose, Simi up in Simi.  I'm sure there's one in Santa Barbara... better call Dave at Fastrack.

Why be grateful for all the associated pain?  Because that's where I've made so many lasting friendships.  Because it's a chance to keep the skills sharp.  Because it's a reminder for the rest of the week to take care of my body.

YESTERDAY WE STARTED WITH SHoP and connected onto CV.  Hartono was back visiting from Indo and wanted to go all the way up Silverado with the group.  That's a hunert miles, many of 'em very fast.  Plus about 6'k of vert.

Our full pockets were empty by mile 70.  Gas station to the rescue.

Thank heavens they aren't mere filling stations anymore.  I'd been dreaming about Dr. Pepper and a Snickers all through the long, false flat Santiago Canyon.  The other plus is that unlike a grocery store, you can see your prized bicycle the entire time.  Oh, and, they have toilets.

Most of the time, someones got cash...
and someone doesn't...

GRATEFUL: SO MANY MILES, SO FEW CARS

GRATEFUL: SO MANY MILES, SO FEW CARS

Nov 16, 2018 TODD BROWN

WE HAVE AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF TRAILS that are easy to access and protected from cars.  This makes riding alone very pleasant.  We also have wide bike lanes on all major streets.

With our wide bike lanes cars aren't a big deal on a group ride. It's easy to see a group, especially when the crew are running tail and head lights.

But, when I'm alone I prefer the trail system.  On the trails, I'm able to take my time and really enjoy the ride.  They tend to be quieter, as well, which lends to space for reflection.  Otherwise, I'm constantly looking over my shoulders, with my ears and spider-sense on high alert.

I may not always ride trails,
but when I do,
I'm grateful.

YOU'VE BEEN ON MY MIND A LOT LATELY.  Just wanted to thank you for the little red trike I rode in a million circles on the driveway.  And the silver scooter we hauled up hills together.  And the sting-ray.  And the 10-speed.

For coming to my races and embarrassing me with your big, giant yell.

Thank you for getting me through university.

DAYS OF THE WEAK

DAYS OF THE WEAK

Nov 14, 2018 TODD BROWN

I HAVE A FRIEND.  It's not you, I hope.

He's always asking me to do this hard ride or meet up with that fast group.  I always say no.

He and I already pound it pretty hard on Tuesday at the TMWC.

On Saturdays, if we're not racing, we're usually full gas for at least an hour... often a lot more.

He can't get enough... keeps inviting me to rip these other rides on the other days of the week.

I think he's nuts.  He thinks I'm weak.

He's always complaining that he's tired and his legs feel terrible.  I always say... reeaaallly?

_____

ON RELATED NOTE, the STRAVA Fitness & Form tool is pretty cool.  I think it's a good indicator of how fresh I am.  The Friday before NOSCO, my form was +13.  Last Friday, before HUNKR-LA, my form was +9.  Monday, after HUNKR-LA, for form was -18.  Fool that I am, I rode TMWC at a good clip and pushed my form down to -28.  Tomorrow, I'll paddle board surf in the morning and do some core work at night.  Friday morning will be a very easy spin.  I'm guessing my form will be back even or slightly positive come Saturday.  I've learned I'm only good for 2 hard days a week.  How hard those I make those days depends on where I am in the season.

So yeah, I love ya... but it's a No thanks.

PREP

PREP

Nov 13, 2018 TODD BROWN

I USED TO THINK I WAS PREPARED.  Now I know what a rank amateur I've been when it comes to racing.

Sure, I'd check out the course profile.

If I could, I'd pre-ride it.

Talk to a few friends.

Hash it out.

But, what if my life depended on it?  Of course, it doesn't.  But, what if it did?

How would I prepare?

When would the preparation start?

Who would I consult?

Where would I train?

Why would I do it?

Actually, my most successful accomplishments have all entailed pre-riding the course many times.  Steady consultation with a coach.  Support from Surfergirl.  I haven't been totally winging it.

But, I've never done anything remotely close the preparation Alex Honnold put into climbing El Capitan without any ropes.

What if I did?

And it wasn't just a bike race,
but, life itself...
like my life depends on it.

Watch this, it's worth it if you're looking for some deep inspiration.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

Nov 12, 2018 TODD BROWN

Previously posted on HUNKR.com

SURE THE RIDE IS DONE, but we’re not.  We’re hoping you all made it home safely and are resting up on this fine Veteran’s day.  You earned it!

We’re working on a couple of things for you:

Robert Plumb is busy touching up photos and uploading them.  Like you, he has immense talent on the bike… and behind the lens.

Podium finishers returned throughout the afternoon and a number of you missed out on your photos and awards.  This week we’ll mailing out to awards to those who missed the podium ceremony.

Here’s the link to all the results: https://revolutionbikefest.com/results/2018-hunkr-la/

The men’s and women’s podium earned $550 each.  That’s real money, and it was earned by some of the fastest racers in Southern California:  Brian McCulloch, Brian Scarbrough and Tinker Juarez finished in that order; and Rhonda Quick, Kirsten Darley and Tina Burch took home the Women’s honors in that order.

That’s a tough, tough crew of racers right there.  No shame in finishing behind them.

The only thing we are feeling is inspired.  Inspired by your warrior spirits.  The course was not a casual ride.  It required a 100% effort the whole way.  Inspired by the beauty of Castaic and the surrounding mountains.  Inspired by each other, the team pulled off a great event.

Why are you still reading this?… shouldn’t you be out for a recovery ride or a massage or an ice-cream cone? training for HUNKR OC in March ’19?

Y’all Are Awesome!

THE MORNING AFTER

THE MORNING AFTER

Nov 11, 2018 TODD BROWN

IT'S NOT THE WALK OF SHAME... but, a slow roll out of bed and and ginger steps  downstairs reminds me yesterday's bike race was real.  Real hard, real far and real fun.  The idea of putting fingertips to keyboard last night was impossible.

What can I tell you about HUNKR-LA?

To start, this is the first HUNKR I've experienced from the rider's side... while my expectations for doing well were low, I was giddy with the prospect of lining up.  And it was better than I expected.  The HUNKR Nation is full of amazing people.

New and untried was our neutral roll out.  A beautiful Mazda MX-5 lead us out for about 30 minutes.  We rode along chatting and meeting new people.  The pace was such that more than one, pulled aside for a nature break and easily caught back.  It was the perfect warm up and really set the tone that we were all in this together.

Once we hit the flag indicating the start, it was on... but not really.  Bierman took off on his road bike and tires set up.  Then a group of 3, including women's winner Rhonda Quick, eased off the front.  The rest of us, rode a reasonable tempo.  The eventual men's podium - McCulloch, Scarbrough, and Tinker - barely lifted the pace.

No doubt, I wasn't the only one surprised to still be with the true talents.

For the next 20 minutes the situation went from warm to simmer.  The moment it went to a true boil it was bye-bye.

Too rich for me, I muttered to my buddy Jim.  It's a long day, he replied.

In the next 20 minutes the main group of riders was reduced to packs of 5-10.  After all, we were on a 27 mile rolling climb.  It's hard to describe how beautiful this abandoned highway is to ride on.  No cars. An expansive vista well above the horizon.  And, the weather was perfect.

Towards the top I was politicking for our group of 8 to stay together if at all possible for the upcoming road section.  We refueled with Hammer and bananas at the first aid station.

A few other riders joined us out of Aid Station 1.  We were about 10 strong.  26 miles of desolate, well maintained, country road lay ahead of us.

The first 10ish miles were twisty, rolling and fast.  The punchy climbs popped a few riders.  We weren't drilling it, but we weren't waiting around either.  That was followed by the Lake Elizabeth climb, a true leg grinder.  Along the way we caught a few riders who'd been out alone for a long time.  Some clung on, others dropped off.

At the top of that climb 14 miles of false flat downhill found us in a beautiful well functioning pace line.  For sure we were making up lots of time.  But, the steady effort was revealing an upcoming battle with cramps.  The familiar twinges were rippling from calves to hips.  It didn't matter, there was no way I was going to get left behind as a solo battle would have been much more difficult.

Finally, we pulled into the aid station at Warm Springs.  Luckily the pace line rotation had me lead in and I was first out and back riding.

There was no point in waiting or trying to stick together.  Ahead was a 2 mile climb with power-sucking sand sections.  In the recon, I'd struggled mightily here.

Then, it was 102 degrees.
Now a nice 80 burned down upon me.
Then, I was riding HVY MTL with Sawtooth 42s.
Now, I was riding Robot's CRUX with Maxxis Rambler 38s.
Then, I had to dismount multiple times and limp across the sand sections.
Now, I rode the entire climb.

Was it the lighter bike?  The beefier tread?  The better weather?  Probs all 3.  I was shocked and stoked to ride it all.  I really blew my mind.

Now it was time for the 7 mile mostly down hill.  It's a lot rougher than the climb.  Plenty of deeper sand, but with the speed pretty easy to rip across.  Plenty of chunky jagged rock.  I chose to take it easy, figuring nothing is slower than a shredded tire.  The straight up canyon rock with wall to wall concrete at the bottom was as fascinating as ever.

It felt great to hit the gravel road at the bottom, and awful to realize the hideous climb waiting for me.  I took a final 1/2 bottle of Hammer and turned the cranks and fought the cramps.

Nick didn't stop and rode by.
I could see Paul's white sleeves up ahead.
All three of us battled our individual demons.

After about 10 minutes I caught Paul.  We gave each other our respective blow-by-blow ride details.  Then Troy rode by... and Paul left me.

It gave me time to think about how I got here.  Alone.  On a devilish climb.  Riding HUNKR.  A dream come true.

AND I HAVE CHOSEN THE GOOD PART

AND I HAVE CHOSEN THE GOOD PART

Nov 09, 2018 TODD BROWN

A BIKE RACE IS LIKE A MICROCOSM OF LIFE.  We make good choices and bad choices.  There are consequences.  Making good choices... the equipment, training, pacing, the lines we hold and wheels we trust makes all the difference between a successful day and a regretful day.

An old man on his deathbed reviewing his life with satisfaction said, And I have chosen the good part.

May we all make good choices tomorrow.

I KNOW, IT'S DARK.

I KNOW, IT'S DARK.

Nov 08, 2018 TODD BROWN

FIRST CAME THE BITE IN THE AIR.  Then, the time change.  But, will that change you?
All the hard earned fitness,
All the lost pounds,
The skills gained
... could all be lost...
Grab a friend,
Mount some lights,
Head out into the night.
It's cold and dark, and we don't care!

EQUAL PAY FOR ALL!

EQUAL PAY FOR ALL!

Nov 08, 2018 TODD BROWN

previously posted on HUNKR.com

HUNKR HAS A CASH PURSE.  Yes boys and girls there’s a couple of bucks on the line Saturday… we’re proud of that.  Plus, it’s equal pay for Men and Women… more proud of that!

Most of us will be racing in our prospective age groups – 5 year increments.  Each of the top 3 finishers in each age group will get a framed mini-jersey.

Will you be in the money?

Will you get a jersey?

MY LIFE IS ONE BIG F

MY LIFE IS ONE BIG F

Nov 06, 2018 TODD BROWN

IT'S TRUE, MY LIFE IS ONE BIG F.  There are so many things I could do better if I could just focus some time and energy on them.  But, that ain't about to happen because of who I am.  Far from perfect.

But, let me lay it out for you...

I say my life is one big F for these four reasons:

Family.  Most solo rides my thoughts center on our family's well-being.  Where are they?  How are they?  What can I do or teach or share?

Finances.  Every single day I wake up to slay the dragon.  I'm not sure that will ever end, and I'm not sure it should.  It's actually riding and racing where I come up new product ideas

Fitness.  Early on, through the examples of my health nut maternal grandparents, I learned we are nothing without our health.  Grampa always had a few extra bikes around for us to play on.

Faith.  Spending 30 minutes contemplating a bigger picture before I go for a spin has been a treasured and life-long habit.

There it is,
not always in that order,
always the focus.

HUNKR-LA Recovery Week

HUNKR-LA Recovery Week

Nov 05, 2018 TODD BROWN

RECOVER AIN'T EASY.  Especially after a terrible ride like Saturday's.  So many rides and races, so little time to recover... what's a man to do?

1.  Sleep a ton.
2.  Ride super easy.  No intensity until Friday.
3.  Stretch and roll every night.
4.  Eat clean... and don't put on weight... Surfergirl is back in town, this is going to be near impossible.
5.  Don't put on weight by doing a bunch of core and upper body stuff... pray for surf.

What's a bike to do?

1.  Get cleaned up.
2.  Rent some race wheels... found a shop that will rent ENVE G23s.
3.  Double check EVERYTHING.

What's a camper to do?

1.  The camping at HUNKR-LA is beautiful.  I begged my buddy to rent his sprinter for the weekend... and he said OK!
2.  Gonna have to do some shopping on Thursday.
3.  Pack it all up.

It's almost party time!

IT'S EVERYTHING

IT'S EVERYTHING

Nov 04, 2018 TODD BROWN

ON AN INDIVIDUAL LEVEL IT WAS NOTHING.  Hundreds of us got up early and gathered for the Mike Nosco Memorial Bike Ride.  While we came from as far away as Belgium and as close as Agoura Hills, and while many of us would truly struggle to finish the challenging course, It was nothing...

Nothing compared to coordinated effort so many volunteers put into a first class bike ride.

Nothing compared to the battles this year's 8 recipients are fighting.

Nothing for any of us to donate a few dollars to participate.

Yet, it was everything for Jack.

At 610 PM, after all but a few had returned home, Jack shared what inspired him 10 years ago to make a difference in the lives of specific people who were suffering.  He wanted to honor the spirit of his brother.

I never knew Mike, but I'm grateful to his legacy.  I was reminded that the little time we give to others can make a huge impact in their lives.

Perhaps this sums it up best:  Samantha introduced herself to me about 745AM.  Here was a beautiful, healthy lady walking around and personally thanking each sponsor for showing up.  She'd been a beneficiary in '16.  Back then, few expected her to be riding a bicycle out of the parking lot in '18.

... was it the funds?
the community?
the hope?
you?

THE NIGHT BEFORE

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Nov 02, 2018 TODD BROWN

IT'S THE NIGHT BEFORE A BIG RIDE OR RACE, and I'm excited... which isn't really a good thing, because I should be calm... conserving my energy... winding down for an early bedtime and solid rest.

But, I'm excited.

My bike has been detailed.

My RaceDay bag loaded.

My drinks mixed.

My car is backed into the driveway; all packed, except for my bike.

My keys and wallet are in the fridge, next to my bottles.

A bath and razor await, followed by some stretching and rolling out the legs.

Then a heavy duty book on theology will hopefully knock me out.

But, I'm excited.

It's Nosco tomorrow.  Can't wait to see my LA friends.  More than a few of us from south OC are going.  Some with plans to smash it, others cruise it.

My plan is to cruise over to each of the 3 climbs and see what I can do... hoping for a combined climb time under 100 minutes.  My body weight is a solid 10 lbs lighter than last year.  I know, I track it.  I know... that's weird.  Every other time I've done this ride I've blown it before we even hit the first climb.  So... lighter Diesel, more rested... that's the plan.

There's always a plan,
put in place.
That's the best part,
ride or race.

PERFECT ENDING, REALLY!

PERFECT ENDING, REALLY!

Nov 01, 2018 TODD BROWN

WORK HAD BEEN BUSY, and we were in a groove at the end of the day.  Really cranking.  Nobody wanted to leave.

But, I'd promised Zanio I'd make it to the last Market Ride of the year.  It's a fun, flat, fast group ride that ends when we move our clocks forward 23 hrs on Sunday.

I suited up and scooted out.  The sun set and my lights lit.

Managed to get there just as they were finishing and heading to pizza at one of the guy's homes.

Then, pffffffft!, pffff, pffff, pffff, pfffffffffff...... ssssssss.  Front flat.

Good thing I got a flat now.  Who know's what kind of disaster I averted by getting off the road at that moment.  What a great time to practice my shade tree mechanics and be sure my MINI-RACEDAY is ready for Saturday's Nosco ride.

Perfect.

ARE YOU A DOCTOR?

ARE YOU A DOCTOR?

Oct 31, 2018 Dev Acct

SHE WAS JUST A TEENAGER WHEN SHE TOLD HER TALE.  200 years later we continue to read it, watch it, and act it out.  Where do these thoughts originate, and why do they haunt us still?  Why do we risk creating our own monsters?

For instance, my mountain bike.

Trek Pro Caliber Frame, RockShox RS-1
Normal enough, then the horror...
NEXT seat post
Bontrager stem
S-Works bars
XTR brakes
SRAM Eagle Derailleur
Grip shift and Red Monkey Grips

Yes, the graveyard of discarded parts has been robbed and bolted together to form one of my many Frankenbikes.

Ugly, maybe.

Crude, perhaps.

Criminal, that's a bit much.

Thankfully, it does not haunt my thoughts nor is it trying to kill me. But, it does get some queer looks.  Even some snobbery.  I care not. For it's my mine, built by me, for me.

Have you done the same?

THIS YEAR'S WINNER

THIS YEAR'S WINNER

Oct 30, 2018 TODD BROWN

IT'S FITTING THAT WE HAVE AN unOFFICIAL WINNER FOR THE BEST COSTUME at the unOFFICIAL Tuesday Morning World Championships.  While too few competed it was still a pretty tough battle.

Zanio as the HUNKR Monkey From Hell

Gould's Jack-o-lantern bib outfit

Brett's Unitard

Joe's glow sticks

Aside from having an all-in costume, Zanio passed out candy.  And that my friends, is a winning move!

Next year... next year, I'm dressing up too!

I'LL BE BACK

I'LL BE BACK

Oct 29, 2018 TODD BROWN

LIKE EVERYONE ELSE WHO HAS MOVED AWAY, HE PROMISED:  I'll be back!

Some I have doubted, correctly so.  Others have surprised me.

Some I have wished well.  Others I have hoped they'd break their promise.

But, this guy in pink.  Bret the Bull!!!....

Social Diesel can't wait to see him tomorrow.
Physical Diesel will have nightmares tonight.

That's what makes our little social ride so unique.  We're like family and we return:
from as far away as Jakarta or as close as Santa Ana, within a few months, or after many years.
We long for the brotherhood,
the loving beatdowns,
the fun of it all!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STOP RIDING YOUR BIKE?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STOP RIDING YOUR BIKE?

Oct 28, 2018 TODD BROWN

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STOP RIDING YOUR BIKE AND PARK IT?  Well, take a look at my tennis racket hand.  It'd been 10 years or so since we last played.

The grips were destroyed.  What was left stuck to our palms.

Similarly, our skills, though once admirable, were dreadful.

The kids beat us 6-1.  It felt so awkward and foreign... I used to live for this.

Now I live to ride...
seeing the result of neglect...
... inspiring.

(pretty sure I whiffed this one)

(still had fun with these kids)

THANKS FOR THAT

THANKS FOR THAT

Oct 26, 2018 TODD BROWN

THANKS TO SOME GOOD PEOPLE, I nearly ruined my new Dominator speed suit.  It wouldn't have happened without them.

First, the really fine folks that built the new 25 Days trail, connecting Draino to the far fire road.  It's a great addition and will be supreme once we get a little rain.

Second, a huge shout out to Bobfrosty for letting me know about all the recent mountain lion sitings.  With the latest fires the lion's territories are much smaller.

Third, thanks to Surfergirl for understanding that The Old Diesel needs a quick ride at the end of a long day.

The sun was settling into a deep amber haze.  I had about 45 minutes to get spin with a few openers for tomorrow's SHoP ride.  I took HVY MTL so I could mix it up on road and dirt.

Halfway down Draino I nailed a beautiful sliding transition onto 25 days.

It was a lot darker.

And very quiet.

I was a little lost in my head, end-of-daydreaming about how much we'd accomplished and how much more we have to do.

Not paying attention to the surroundings at all.

THHHHHHRUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

... a flock of about 66 crows a few feet away launched through the shoots and into the sky...

The Birds!

Heart beats... SKIPPED!

2/3s of the trail lay ahead of me, and Bobfrosty's comment was loud and clear. Now I was really moving.

Off to my left something large and dark mowed through the brush.  I stormed on.

A Happy Halloween dry run!

ARE THERE GOING TO BE AID STATIONS AT HUNKR-LA?

ARE THERE GOING TO BE AID STATIONS AT HUNKR-LA?

Oct 25, 2018 TODD BROWN

reposted from HUNKR.com

ARE THERE GOING TO BE AID STATIONS?!!

Heck yes!

Time-wise, this is going to be the longest and toughest HUNKR yet... and we want you to crush it.  So we're setting you up for success. Whether you come out for the adventurous grind or have intentions of winning the cash purse.

What's at an Aid / Refueling Station: Aid stations will be fully stocked with Hammer Heed and Gels, along with Water, fruit and some packaged snacks (fig bars etc).

The first station will be at the end of old 99, right before you start the lonely country road.  About mile 22 (not including the 4 mile neutral roll out).

Station number 2 is at 34.

You'll find station number 3 as you exit the pavement and get down to some serious dirt.  Mile 50.

Number 4 is at the bottom of the long dirt descent, before the final 3 mile, paved climb.  Is it necessary? On paper No.  In reality, we're thinking a number of riders will welcome a rest and re-fuel.

That's it, 4 stations.  All dedicated to your success.

Me, Todd, my strategy is stop twice:  #1 and #3.  If all goes well.

It's time to HUNKR down!
