HR TRAINING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE the joy of climbing with friends to a distant peak and poking through the clouds. Summiting is like having...
... the top of the world to ourselves.
All is calm.
Bombing down the mostly unfamiliar other side...
... not so calm.
Heaven forbid we'd let a gap open and get left behind.
Already on the edge of grip, I came into a sweeping lefthand turn...
... a negative radius, sloping downward.
I drifted all the way wide to the soft bulldozed berm.
Exiting, it was nothing but steep with ruts and rocks competing for my attention.
It wasn't looking good.
Somehow I managed to wiggle through the gauntlet.
My HR now sky high.
Only one thing to do, let out a huge...
... WOOOOHOOOOO!!!
Sheesh, my heart skipped a beat just reliving and writing this.
It.
Was.
Awesomeness.
Had I gone down,
I wouldn't have died.
But, it woulda been a bloody mess firshur.
Glad I kept my eyes open
and arms relaxed,
the tires held...
... just another reason to be grateful this time of year.

WHO KNEW WE WERE THAT BAD?
THE PROGRESS WE MAKE can be kind of embarrassing. We don't know it at the time. In fact, we're having so much fun those early pics and vids...
... can be kind of embarrassing.
There's hope.
Bad athletes,

THE OTHER 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
A LOT OF US plan to do some superspecialsecret training when nobody is looking in the coming days. Some are going so far as to...
... do the outrageous.
A gift to ourselves.
Which reminds me of one my pals who each year would ride a century 12 days in a row.
That was his goto way to start the year with a bunch of base miles.
Of course, the family and friends all thought that was...
... akin to getting coal for Christmas.
Personally, my overarching diabolical (counter season or counter intuitive?) plan is to...
- play around on jumps and technical stuff
- catch up with friends
- have fun
... make the training count.
What are you planning for 12/25 thru 1/6
While you're thinking about that...
... I'm sharing this kit with you in the off chance you're looking so spoil yourself with something outrageously sexy...

IS IT TOO LATE TO GO PRO?
THE SALARIES of the tops pro seem fantastic. The lifestyle unbeatable. Who doesn't want to get...
... paid to train and travel the world?

But...
... it's too late, you're too old, you lack talent, you don't have time, you're too young, your equipment sucks, your friends and family won't approve, you'll nevereverver freakin' make it...

we can still focus on...

- honing our craft
- doing our best

WE WON THE LOTTERY!
WE DON'T DREAM enough. At least most of us. When we do, and I'm not talkin' 'bout shut eye...
... we change our state.
Great things are suddenly possible.
I was reminded of this yesterday...
... my son was going to buy a lottery ticket.
He does this when it's over a billion.
I told him how much...
- it allows us to dream
- things we'd change
- do or never do
... I love and hate the lottery.
Name one thing you'd do?
I'd never get up to an alarm clock again?
Later, I reflected on my greatest day on the bike.
In 2022.
The insane Leadville goal of...
- a PR
- sub-8 hrs
- at age 60
... and how I did it.
The dream of sub-9 at sixty started years prior.
Always in the back of my mind.
But, there.
How it would feel to be in that kind of shape.
The closer the date got,
the more real it became.
Until I believed I could not only go sub-9,
but shatter my 6 previous efforts.
We can win our own lottery...
- crystal clear
- detailed
- belief
... if we'll just start dreaming.

IS IT THE SACRIFICE?
WHY DO SOME OF US stick with the endurance thing year after year after year and others check in for a season or two then check out...
... never to return?
There is something unseen happening.
I think I know what it is.
Sacrifice.
For better or worse...
- could be skipping a new car for a better bike
- an hour later out at night for an early run
- a quick swim instead of a tv binge
... we've sacrificed something.
That sacrifice produces the faith necessary to really go for it,
go for that insane physical goal we've set.
It gives us hope.
And, we love that...
... in everything we do.

YOU'RE GONNA SAY THIS IS IT
THINGS AREN'T GOING to go according to plan. Everything is going to go south. Everything. And you're going to say this is it..
... This is how I end.
You can accept that,
or you can get to work.
That's all it is.
You just begin.
Solve one problem.
And then the next.
If you solve enough problems...
... you get to cross the finish line.
Adapted from the closing scene of The Martian.
It's a long movie,
about solving problems,
which is what we do the moment...
... we register for a race or commit snagging that elusive PR.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
IF WE'RE REALLY LUCKY, and we (you n me) are, we'll stumble into something that keeps us endlessly fascinated. No matter how much we do it, or how long we put it on pause...
... it is always, ALWAYS, a ton a fun.
How can we do it forever?
At a high level?
Before I tell ya the answer...
- age
- friends
- failure to progress
... we gotta accept the challenges.
1. If we aren't on point with our health choices, age may ravish us...
... and not the sexy kind.
2. As the playground circles the sun...
... many of our friends will hang it up (see #1.)
3. Failure to progress...
... leads to boredom.
Today, I hooked my sassy grin...
- rode with younger cats
- picked up a new trick
- pushed my limits
... up to the firehose of youth.
1. Lucked into shredding a lot of single track with Steve and Brian...
... the schedules aligned, the conversations vibrant.
2. Coming in hot to a corner, Steve locked up the rear wheel...
... Why did you do that? To vector the turn and change trajectory.
3. Brian, did you launch off that rock?...
... Yeah, came around the turn so fast I had to.
The real secret to the fountain of youth...
... making and keeping young friends.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHOW A FRIEND AROUND TOWN?
GETTING A LONG-DISTANCE FRIEND TO VISIT is mostly rare, for most of us. We post to Starva, talk up our locale...
... to the point of bragging.
Then, the friend shows up.
Suddenly, we're wondering...
- will they be impressed
- can they keep up
- will they crash
... how this is gonna go down>
There was a time when Surfergirl would take such visiting friends aside and whisper...
... Be careful, he's kinda crazy.
Couldn't blame her as more than a few returned bleeding,
one with a broken bone.
It wasn't on purpose.
- I'd just forget
- be in the zone
- having a blast
... thinking they were doing the same.
The local, me...
... could rip the trails blindfolded.
Everyone else was riding blind.
Anyway...
... Tim did great today.
(I knew he would, and didn't really back it down at all.)

GOOD NEWS: THERE'S HOPE!
THIS TIME OF YEAR, the schedule gets crowded. The company parties, family get togethers, community events...
... we want to attend 'em all.
It eats into the training time.
And, that's good.
Just yesterdee, Surfergirl reminded me of our date to see Gentry.
Her favorite trio was in town for a Christmas concert.
Driving down, we wondered if we'd run into any friends,
walking in we saw my brother and sisterinlaw...
... seating, we were astonished.
We were exactly right behind them.
Couldn't have planned it better,
total surprise.
But, that's not the point.
We were carried away in the spirit of the night...
... all the world's nonsense, forgotten.
When we returned home, there was a package on the doorstep.
Incredible...
... a customer had hand made classic ornaments for each of our family members.
As a gift.
The real point is if we'll shut off the news, the pointless socials and get out to events and people we love we find...
... there's hope!
Hoping you'll find plenty of time to share your love for others in the coming weeks.

THE BEST FREE ADVICE YOU NEVER PAID FOR
WE ALL GET ACHES AND PAINS. Mostly, we just blow 'em off knowing in a few days things will right themselves. At least that's the idea. But, we are organic...
... our equipment is not.
It won't self heal,
like our miraculous bodies.
No matter how much positive energy we send it...
... those creaks won't go away on their own.
We gotta respect and inspect 'em.
I mean really figure it out.
Lemme splain it.
I've had an annoying creak for a couple of weeks.
Finally, last Friday...
- removed cranks
- checked, cleaned bottom bracket
- found a broken bolt on the chain ring spider
... thought that'd solve everything.
Mostly, kinda.
However, last steep climbs at end of Saturday's ride indicated problem not resolved.
Took into the shop for professional treatment.
Ace mechanic gives me a call.
It's not good.
How bad.
Axle in hub is cracked.
Yikes.
Yeah, it coulda been bad.
How bad?
Well, if it broke while riding it would have destroyed the hub innards, and...
And, what?
... and possibly locked up the wheel.
Now, I dunno how things are where you live, but on that ride I'd just finisihed...
... I hit 35 mph over a rocky, gravel fire road.
Had that wheel locked up...
... I'd be dead, at best.
Consider this the best free advice you Never paid for...
- bike
- bones
- muscles
... Fix thy creaks!

HAVE YOU HAD A CLASSY SMOKE, LATELY?
CELEBRATING AN EPIC EFFORT is, can be, a powerful factor in repeatability. You know, whether or not we ever do it again and...
... gain the associated benefits.
Old time movies we so classy.
In black and white.
Couple meets,
goes to dinner and dancing,
the very next scene we see...
... they are covered up, smoking in bed!!!
Here's how we do it most Saturdays.
Meet up at the corner,

the next thing we know...
... we're at the country store.
Cokes, RedBulls, chips, even had Zingers yesterday...
... our version of smoking in bed.

- guaranteeing many repeat performances

APPRECIATING A ROUGH START
FOR SOME GETTING STARTED is easy, for other it's hard. Even messy. So, what's better...
... an easy start or a tricky start?
Take today.
We'd climbed 4141', 13.4 miles.
The start, though steep, was pretty smooth.
The final 4.5 miles, were quite a bit rougher.
Lots of rocks.
I really suffered that last 2ish miles.
After a bit of a break,
it was time to plummet back down.
We pushed the pace pretty good those first 4 1/2 miles...
... over terrain I've flatted on many times.
I knew the next 9 miles were smoother, but...
... after the previous beating they seemed like a freeway.
We screamed down.
Surprisingly, I posted my 3rd fastest time ever.
(In case you're wondering if that was my 3rd time down, it was my 44th since 2012, per Starva)
This served as a good reminder...
... if we push through a rough start, we gain the skills to go much faster.
===
Further update on the Conti Dubitals...
- they roll reallyreallyreally fast
- corner dependably at high speed
- seem to be pretty darn puncture resistant
... I'm loving 'em.
Looking forward to playing with pressures,
I think I can run lower than the 16 and 17 I ran today.
(that was in the cold garage, before the heated up on the actual ride which would increase the pressure by a few pounds)

WHAT ARE WE RIDING SATURDAY?
WE ALL HAVE A RHYTHM TO OUR TRAINING. We have a favorite rotation of workouts, training partners, intensity...
... just like the goto dinner schedule.
When all else fails, I know spaghetti and meat balls is a winner.
No matter what I have planned.
When it comes to Saturdays, the...
- crew
- pace
- route
... I have a few defaults.
If I've had two hard sessions during the week,
I'm leaning towards a longish sweetspot/tempo ride.
If the week only had one high intensity completed,
I'm gonna wring it out on Saturday.
This week's Wednesday Worlds was kinda hard, therefore...
... tomorrow I have a nasty 1ish hour uphill TT planned.
The younsters are gonna make me hurt.

TACKY, TORQUEY TESTING... CONTI DUBNITALS
GETTING NEW EQUIPMENT is always fun. Usually, it is preceded by all kinds of Kool-Aid drinking. You know, the marketing team laying it on thick...
... and our friends laughing at our antiquated ways.
This week, I bit.
Finally jumped to wider tires.
From 2.2 RaceKing in back and 2.2 CrossKing in front to...
... 2.4 Dubnitals, front and rear.
My testing took place on our local single tracks...
... while doing low-cadence, torque climbing in Zone 2.
I'd rip down,
ponder performance on way back up.
Going from 2.2 to 2.4 doesn't appear to be much,
the tires are a bit lighter than the 2.2s
My initial...
- they go from edge to edge much quicker
- seem to roll very fast
- traction is great
... reactions.
I think they're gonna be a great upgrade,
will test on the smoking fast downhills, Saturday.

MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION
IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise a child, then, for us, it obviously takes a group to train us up proper. The right gaggle...
... has countless benefits.
Number 1 being speed.
Which is why I did the Wednesday Worlds today, and rolled right into...
... Pain Cave.
When we're on form,
this is an hour segment of riding just below detonation.
Today was much easier...
- the group was slowish
- BBB and I cruised Pain Cave
- catching up and discussing next year's goals
... we were 5 minutes off the PRs.
That will come down because we committed to some rather outlandish goals.
Which means, we'll be pressing the pace on the WW ride,
then duking it out on Pain Cave.
Leading to our mutually assured destruction the rest of the work day...
... and, what we hope will be a massively successful 2026 campaign.

OTB OR OTB?
WE HAVE ALL THESE CODE WORDS and acronyms in our culture. The deeper we get into it...
... the cryptic they become.
Here's the mechanic's favorite...
... I was just riding along.
His eye's roll and he scribbles on the notes...
... JRA.
I heard another from a shop owner who was barely hanging on and his "loyal" patrons were constantly asking for discounts and free stuff...
... he called them Freetards.
I've been guilty of both of those and quickly cleaned up my evil ways once I got the hint.
But, this one...
... it's been hard to stay away from.
OTB.
This one is a two-fer,
I can't get it out of my mind lately.
Off the back...
... which is where I seem to be finding myself a little more than my liking.
Over the bars...
... luckily, my recent wipeouts have been on solo rides.

ARE YOU CHOPPING WOOD?
WE ALL HAVE A FAVORITE MOVIE, book or story. One that inspires us to be more than we currently are, or return to a place we once dominated. These myths are important because...
... they can lead and guide us to a better future.
Truly powerful.
One of my all time favorites is Rocky IV.
Rocky, seeing his once enemy, the great Apollo Creed, who became his friend and mentor, get crushed by a Russian giant...
... decides he must do something completely different.
He must go...
- runs
- pulls a sled
- carries logs
- throws boulders
- chops down a tree
... to snowy and freezing Siberia.
Maybe it's winter,
maybe it's cold...
... maybe they only way to get nasty fit is chopping wood like Rocky.

EARNING VS LEARNING
LIFE IS LIKE AN EPIC CARD GAME. We're dealt our genetic hand. As little children, we have no idea...
... we're just running around having fun.
Somewhere around the age of 8 or so we realize...
... we're not all created equal.
I can throw,
my aim is woeful.
I can run,
my friends are faster.
I can swim,
holding my breath is a struggle.
Most of us here, found we love to endure...
... persistence and suffering are out super powers.
We can't earn our way to a sub-4 minute mile, but...
... we can learn how to be faster and more efficient.
That's the journey we are on.
Learning how to be our best.

ARE YOU COMFY?
WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT comfort zones. How we want to avoid them because they hold us back, lead us to settling for...
... more than we can be.
Who wants that?
Things I think about after a less frightful drop down one of my all time favorite descents.
I held the KOM at one point,
still top 11.
Back than, I was really, really at ease on that screamer...
... in a state of flow, relaxed.
Comfy.
The good kind.
Yesterday, on the same segment, I was a hot mess.
Smiley on my rear wheel, showing his front wheel, asking...
... Are you riding cautious?
I wanted to say...
... Heck no, and Screw you!
Things were not flowing,
I was gripping.
Hard.
It was very uncomfortable because I haven't been on my MTB much the last year or so.
Practice leads to comfy,
comfy leads to flow,
flow leads to ripping.
Effortlessly.

THERE'S A LEGENDARY CLIMB
SOARING 5600' ABOVE SEA LEVEL, we have access to a legendary climb. A gravel fire road. It's the kind of challenge we can sink our teeth into, get a baseline for our fitness...
... set legit goals.
The mountain ain't movin'...
- 9 miles
- 3000'
- 6.3%
... but, we are.
The KOM is held by current world tour pro Kevin Vermaerke,
which he probably set in the NICA days.
53:10
The next 9 are local legends...
... the legit kind, not the goofy Starva thing.
There are two ways to view...
- I'm slow, and I suck
- I'm slow, and I can improve
- I'm slow, and I'm dawgawn grateful to be ripping with my pals
... today's traditional Thanksgiving effort.
One more takeaway.
When I set my PR, we lived much closer to the mountain and I'd ride it 3-4 times a month.
It was a goto.
And, it got me thinking...
... if I wanna slay like that again, I gotta do it more.
Maybe every week for the rest of 2025,
and chop 18 minutes off today's time?

I NEVER LIFTED WEIGHTS UNTIL I GOT INTO THE NFL...
MOST OF US ARE PROBABLY HEADING OUT for the local turkey trot or some sort of holiday ride. It's tradition, followed by the traditional...
... Did you ride or run today?
Which deserves...
... Yes, and the sun also rose this morning.
Earning an...
... I bet your hungry!
Usually followed by a...
... I didn't know you could eat so much pie!
At some point someone will turn on "the game".
As full as we are,
as much as that lycra gonna be stressed tomorrow...
... we realize endurance training doesn't favor or create massive muscles.
Which brings me to one of my all time favorite athletes...
... the Great Hershel Walker.
Dude was devastating in college and NFL.
This quote must have been so humiliating to those left flattened on the field....
- 2000-3000 pushups/day
- 3000-5000 crunches/day
- hundreds of pullups/day
- hundreds of dips/day
- air squats and lunges thousands
- 20-50 yard sprints
... I never lifted weights until I got into the NFL.
Damn.
We may not be - ok, never will be - built like Hershel, but...
... kinda makes ya wonder how much stronger we could be.
Dedicating little time,
from home.

STRATEGY VS THE DREAM
LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR yet? Maybe it's too early, I mean jeez it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But, almost...
... so, it might not be too soon.
There's no rule on that.
I was thinking about this on my ride yesterday.
What comes first...
... strategy or the dream.
Especially with all the InfooIncers on the socials.
You know which ones kill me....
... literally saw this one today...
... Download My 47 Points To Master Advertising Now!
hahahahahah
But, you get the idea.
We can get so hyped up on a new (to us) strategy...
- Single-legged box jumps while hula-hooping for explosive sprinting
- One million grams of carbohydrate from bonking to crushing
- Sleep like a grizzly and maul the group ride
... we start looking for a race to unleash.
I've done it,
still do it.
We can all be suckers,
the cons are as appealing as the conmen.
Anyway, what I concluded after zonetwoing my way around town was...
... The Field of Dream if we build it, they will come...
... is kinda right.
The players, errr strategies, don't show up until the field is built.
In other words, once we identify the...
- A race
- impossible PR
- unconquerable route
... then, and only then, will the strategies we need be apparent.
Let me say it differently.
We can quickly toss aside...
- techniques
- strategies
- hacks
... the worthless dross.
Because the really good stuff that works is easy to see...
... once we have our dream/goal/desire firm and clear in our minds.

NOT AS GOOD?
JOURNALISTS ARE SO MUCH SMARTER than us fans, they have incredible insights we just can't fathom. Why it's a wonder we even...
... bother seeing with our own eyes.
This is gold.
A journo says...
... MVdP is nowhere near as good as Tadej.
On the heels of saying...
... MVdP beat Tadej on the races he wanted to win.
He being MVdP,
and he being Tadej.
Wait,
what?
He's not as good,
but he beats him?
Oh, journo.
Here's the dill, and...
... it's a good lesson for us lowly amachuros.
On certain courses...

The challenge is to find our course.

MY VICE IS TERRIBLE, MY CULT IS WORSE
FEW OF US HAVE BEEN TO AN AA MEETING, but we've seen TV/movie version many times. Hi, I'm Todd and...
... I'm an endurance junkie.
Hi Todd.
When we come clean with the general population, Today I...
- swam 10,000 yards
- rode for 5 hours
- ran 20 miles
... they think we're crazy.
We're not.
The adrenaline rush of ...
- 60 miles an hour in nothing but lycra
- the swimmers blue mind
- the runner's high
... we need that hit.
Regularly.
This risks we take...
- sending it down the mountain
- running along into the cold, dark night
- impossibly holding our breath one more length
... would freakout any life insurance company.
These sensations of pushing well beyond normal, reasonable, safe...
... are often all that's keeping us stable.
In all sincerity, because the allure of the lottery and dulling our senses with substances is so very tempting and tragically treacherous...
... stay dangerous my friends.
The sane kind.

HOW WE SOLVE PROBLEMS
SOME PROBLEMS ARE HARDER than others to solve. It can be frustrating when the answers just aren't coming. This is...
... how I solve my problems.
It's a question of time, right?
The truly unsolvable problems need marinating...
- clearly identify what needs to be solved
- set aside time
- get outside
... during a very lazy ride, run or swim.
The only goal is to solve the problem.
A stop for a pastry and drink is often required...
... I carry a journal and a pen to help me flush out ideas.
The best problems take require more...
- miles
- creativity
- "fuel" stops
... 3 or 4 or a lot more sessions.
Just today I was trying to figure out what to focus on...
- goals
- events
- milestones
... for next year.
Went for a ride,
had a brainstorm,
came home to the Giant calendar.
And they think we ride just for fun and fitness!

BECAUSE IT'S BEAUTIFUL
WE ALL HAVE A WAY to perform. Whether it's vanquishing, showing off, sufferfesting, truly enjoying every moment, our individual efforts...
... leave a lasting impression.
On others,
on ourselves.
Is there a best way?
Right way?
Only way?
Let us not gaze into our own navel but...
- racers
- promoters
- business leaders
- matriarchs and patriarchs
- community and governments
... appreciate for better or worse.
It is what it is.
I was recently struck by a singer...
- unknown by most
- unwilling to submit to label demands
- who died without much fame or fortune at 33
... sold more than 10,000,000 records posthumously.
What?!... how? who?
The great Eve Cassidy sang as if every song was a gift to the listener,
with uncommon love and passion.
Nothing more.
May we all do our thing with such beauty.

ON THE GAS
A LITTLE KNOWN SECRET to not falling over is going faster. It's counterintuitive. But, it's the first thing we taught the kids when they started riding motos in the desert...
... speed is our friend.
Then why did I suffer so badly last weekend in a desert-bound gravel race?
You didn't have a motor Dingdong!
No, it's more than that...
... and I've thought about it a lot this week.
The 92-mile race
- low gradient climbs and descents
- long, long straight roads
- mostly flat
... provided very little coasting.
We had to stay on the gas.
It's not like the terrain here,
most of my ride profiles look like a lumberjack's saw blade.
Anyway, I'm thinking about that this week because I'm starting to do sweetspot training...
... 90% of FTP, without coasting.
I've got to stay on the gas (the pedals).
It's hard to do when we have so many punchy climbs and lots of turns.
But, I'm a committed fool when it comes to this stuff.

TAKE TWO, AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING
GETTING A COLD is annoying. Can't train like we want to, can't sleep well, hard to be productive. If we get near our lover fingers are raised in an X...
... so, what do we do?
To speed it up.
There are my goto...
- Zicam at first hint
- Pollo Loco tortilla soup
- Insanely hot and long showers
... rider's tales.
Then there's what I did today...
... which could massively backfire, tomorrow.
I woke up,
it was cold.
I had a cold,
and hemmed and hawed.
I consulted my alter ego Dr. Goforit, who said...
- raise your body temperature
- the nose will start to flow
- blow that gunk out
... Put on a kit and get on two wheels.
Torture.
I've had mixed success over the years.
I'll either be on my way to pneumonia...
... or good as new tomorrow.

THE GODLY CONNECTION IS STRONG IN THIS ONE
BEING OUTSIDE and unplugged is more than just an escape from "the real world". Most people in "modern society" rarely experience what that is like. We do because...
... that's where we thrive.
And, we're moving fast.
Even if we're practicing our craft daily,
and the whether is good,
we could use more.
Not less.
I experienced a snippet of much more on our road trip.
We took time to visit the land my greatgreatgrandfather homesteaded 100 years ago.
No one else was there but us.
Access is via a gravel road,
10 miles from a 2-lane highway.
No cell service.
The only inputs,
each other and nature.
The peace and solitude remarkable.
Over night, the temps dipped low enough to freeze the rain puddles from the prior evening.
We were cozy,
the van has a heater.
Still, when we rose to stretch and visit this hallowed land filled with childhood and parenthood memories...
... we were shocked by the reality of nature.
Not in a negative way,
one that makes you feel alive,
connected to more than a paycheck and bills.
To God.
To acquire the land...
- the extreme temps at 7000'
- the distance by horse or wagon to town
- the loneliness during the months no one came to visit
... E. M. Whiting had to stay on it and not leave, for two years.
How else could he make such a sacrifice if not feeling a closeness to his creator?
I feel it when I'm...
- there
- in the surf
- on our local trails
... and love it.
Need it.
And so...
- walk
- hike
- ride
- run
- surf
- swim
- camp
... we keep inviting and encouraging our friends to join us.
Outside.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE...
DISNEY CREATED AN EMPIRE animating fairytales. Because the appeal is so strong, with little to no cultural barriers we have to ask ourselves not just why, but...
... which is our favorite.
Then, why?
Personally, Cinderella is my top choice.
Not just the story arc,
the snappy dances,
or catchy songs.
There's an orphan in all of us.
Often we don't see who we really are,
out talents lying dormant.
Could be naysayers,
could be something else.
It's nice that Price Charming is a price,
it's charming that he sees Cinderella as she really is.
The point isn't...
- Where's my prince charming?
- Who will save the day for me?
- Why am I not picked?
... to wallow in our sorrows.
The point is for whom are we Prince Charming?

IT’S IN OUR DNA
TOO FEW OF US know our family history. Some barely know cousins. Great-grandparents? Forget about it. It’s just not a thing. And, yet…
… what could be more important?
To know their stories,
is to know ourselves.
Which is why we drove hours out of our way after the bike race.
Here in eastern Arizona, to soak of our roots.
Surfergirl’s great-grandfather helped settle Snowflake,
my great-great grandfather helped settle Saint Johns.
They are neighboring towns,
about 20 miles apart.
And the communities were quite friendly with each other.
You’d think we grew up out here,
and that’s how we met and married.
Not so.
I was born and raised in SoCal,
she was raised in Hawaii.
Maybe somethings are meant to be.
But, that’s not really the point.
This is hard country,
the high desert.
To carve a life and community out of nothing took strength, smarts, and massive cooperation…
… the same qualities it takes to complete very challenging endurance events.
Who is an ancestor that inspires you?

I WANNA PUT A DENT IN THAT GIRL
IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE we can say and do the craziest things. You know things we might not normally say or do. And, at the time...
... they sound/seem totally normal.
Like today.
I had the awesome opportunity to flat 15 minutes into the 92 mile race...
... suddenly I'm swearing like a sailor.
It wasn't horrific,
still, glad no one was around.
Spent the next 50 miles basically riding by myself.
Doing my best.
Jumping from group to group.
I roll up on one of the female leaders,
bridge across to another badass Barbie.
And, I hear her say the funniest thing...
... I wanna put a dent in that girl.
Speaking of the other racer.
I visualize a halloween scene,
hatchet stuck in the helmet.
Hahaha.
Then the crass, neanderthal in me thinks...
... that sounds like something I'd like to do on date night.
Not the hatchet...
... if you know what I mean.
These crazy thoughts are birthed in our very depleted states, as we...
... do our best to stay upright and moving forward.

WHY WOULD ANYBODY GO TO DOUGLASS, AZ?
RACING VENUES ARE HARD TO COME BY, especially in big cities. Almost impossible. The result is the bigger the race, the more likely we are to travel...
... someplace we've never been.
Would never go.
Here I am,
two hours south of Tucson,
on the Mexican border, in Douglass, AZ.
This gravel race has the same vibe as my first Leadville,
back in '99.
Small town,
somewhat forgotten.
Which makes it a perfect place to stage a gravel race...
... surrounded my endless gravel roads.
I decided to sponsor the race for three reasons...
- Mike, the promoter, is hella nice and persistent.
- He's a huge fan of our products
- I'm a huge fan of gravel races
... which are the only reasons to sponsor anything.
Passion and admiration for what each other are doing.
Funny story.
I have actually been here before.
Back in the 80's.
I was doing missionary work in Mexico and our visas needed to be renewed. Five us youngsters piled in a van and hit to Agua Prieto, MX. The plan was to walk across to Douglass, wait five minutes and walk back with new visas.
We were greeted with...
... No, no gringo. No se puede asi. (Not so fast whitey, you can't do it like that.)
So we...
- spent the night in Motel 6
- chomped Pizza Hut
- watched ESPN
... forgot all our Spanish.
And crossed back the next day.
I'm guessing Borderlands gravel will be slightly more challenging.
Good night now.

HURRY UP
IN OUR EFFORTS TO GET FASTER, we often think of the many benefits. Mainly health, youthfulness. And truth is...
... we are better than most, not as good as some.
Who's better?
By that, do you mean...
... how could anybody be better???
We are aerobic machines, and that is a key to longevity.
Mostly.
Here are...
- Sprints
- Weights
... the missing ingredients.
I know, I know...
- sprinting sucks
- weights can be dangerous
- and, for the weenies in the back, who wants to gain weight?
... what you're thinking.
According to research, when we lift weights not only do our bones get denser but there are intra-muscular gains to be made that we cannot get any other way.
You know what else is weird, most people in our culture never sprint again after their early twenties.
So, here's the main takeaway from all scientific facts do 'em and...
... move faster, age slower.

GIVERS
THERE ARE THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER selflessly and those who volunteer selfishly. Both are admirable. In fact, when I was a race promoter it blew my mind that...
... people just reach out and offer their assistance.
Just giving where there's an obvious need.
I ran into a selfish one tonight.
The sun had set,
my headlight was on.
I was making my way cautiously because the ruts on this particular trail are bad and...
... there's an enormous sinkhole that might kill ya.
As a get there...
... did I say it was pitch dark?...
... a man is standing with a shovel in one hand and a trowel in the other.
Creepy?
Scary?
Nope, I knew what he was up to.
Not burying bodies...
... prepping the trail so when it rains this weekend the ruts will fill in.
I stopped.
Introduced myself.
Thanked him profusely.
No need, I just moved here and can't believe how lucky we are to have these trails right here. Just wanna make 'em perfect for my kids and me to ride on.
To which I could only say...

I THINK I VOIDED THE WARRANTY
LIVING IN THE ACTION SPORTS MECCA of the world, I'm surrounded and influenced by all manner of creative, ingenious athletes. We all feed off each other. My friend Kody...

My new MTB was in need.

Got a mount for Roval bars?
Yes.
Cool, I'll get one.
We haven't tested for lights yet.
He thought I was asking for my road bike.
So yeah...
- the road mount is super aero
- looks freakin' awesome
- supports a light

2026 WILL BE HERE soon enough. Many of us are already planning work, vacations, family time...

- Dream equipment

If not this year...
... when?
'Cause here's the deal, if we only did one race next year...
... we could probably make it happen.
It's just a mental game, play it out, and let me know...
... where, when and why.
Me personally, my top choices...
- Gravel Burn, South Africa
- Oregon Trail
- Rebecca's Private Idaho
... are gravel stage races.

THE REBEL ALLIANCE IS GROWING
EVERY NOW AND THEN a new format or race or course or piece of equipment comes along with promises to change everything. Except hardly anything changes...
... until something sparks.
How does that work?
Like this.
About 10 years ago, I purchased my first gravel bike.
My friends, like me, were roadies and mountain bikers.
A gravel bike seemed like the worst of both worlds.
I got it,
understood where they were coming from.
Except, I was having so dang much fun...
... I didn't care.
I just kept riding gravel,
inviting my friends,
enduring their
mockery.
It wasn't overnight,
more like overdecade.
The last two Saturdays, most telling.
Eight days ago, an absolute shredder on a mountain bike shows up on a spanking new gravel bike.
30 minutes in, he's grinning and shouting...
... This looks so wrong, but gadang it's fun!
Today, another pal shows up for his first group gravel ride.
He's gifted off road, we spent years riding motos in the desert...
... We're going 30+ miles an hour, I can't believe how much ground we can cover!
Does that mean you should be riding gravel, too?
Maybe.
But, really, it's just a lesson in how things that are worthwhile spread.
Then again...
... What did the gravel bike say to the road bike?
I am your father.

FAMOUS COACHES ARE GETTING FIRED RIGHT AND LEFT
IN PRO SPORTS, or high level amateur, there is always a spot light on the coaches. At some point, blame or credit lands...
... squarely on their shoulders.
Should it?
I do love to follow college football...
- the emotional swings
- the athleticism
- the stadiums
... so much energy and unpredictablity.
Who would have thought so many megamilliondollar...
... coaches would be punted this year.
Mid-season.
The great Seth Godin wrote The Gap.
The idea behind the book is when we find ourselves unable to close the gap to our goal...
... the sooner we decide to quit and move on, the better.
It might be a pro gambling tactic as well...
... but, the only gambling I do is putting my heart, soul and cash into this business.
Anyway, would you have/have you had the guts...
... to change directions, and how quickly would you do it?

CHOOSE WORTHY ADVERSARIES
WHAT IS IT ABOUT LOVING UNDERDOGS? It's so uniquely American. Is it our origin story, the DNA of our culture...
... to cheer for the fighter with no chance?
Honestly.
Who can't feel a bit of their own soul being crushed with every blow the awesome Apollo Creed delivers to a...
... bloodied, bruised, crushed Rocky Balboa?
We've all been in that arena.
Had the bell ring.
Still standing.
Somehow.
We humans thrive against overwhelming adversaries...
- inspiration
- desperation
- exasperation
... oozing with confidence and power.
When our all is required,
we discover who we really are.
As the great Kierkegaard said...
... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

MY TOP 5 SPEED HACKS
FOR MOST OF US, going faster, getting better, has less to do with a fancy new gizmo or the latest training fad. We know that...
... but, what are doing about it?
Like the Mastercard ad says...
... some things are priceless.
Here are five...
- Sleep
- Nutrition
- Strength
- Maintenance
- Consistency
... anybody can do.
These are my hacks.
Sleep.
Figure out when we want to wake up. Get in bed 8 hours prior to that. Stay there until it's time. Eventually, our bodies get the hang of it, and boom... we're sleep doping.
Nutrition.
Eat clean. No packaged foods. If we can't identify the ingredients, we don't consume it.
Strength.
Do the basics, at home. We don't have time to drive to the gym. No need to do all the sets at once, break 'em up throughout the day. Hardly any equipment is needed: pull up bar, a few dumbbells (adjustables for the win).
Maintenance.
New equipment is so nice because it is all tight and precise. Flawless maintenance will keep that new equipment performance for years, and we'll always be race ready.
Consistency.
If we always train at the same time magic happens. Those around us learn and appreciate our commitment. We get it done. Always.
A final word.
I was never the best athlete. Not among my friends, and certainly not at school or among the general population.
I was never picked first, couldn't aim or hit anything regularity.
I wasn't the bravest or most daringist.
I did have one thing going for me...
... I freakin' loved being outside and being challenged by nature.
Today, I'm probably better than almost all my contemporaries.
That's not a flex, it's just happens.
They quit.
Which brings us to the top two hacks of all time...
... commitment and passion.

YOU'VE LOST THAT AWESOME FEELING... GET IT BACK!
THERE'S A CERTAIN SOMETHING we feel during the early days of picking up our passion. It's tangible. We can taste it. We love it...
... that's how we got here.
I'd lost it.
Over the last couple of years, drunk with stupid stats from Training Peaks and Starva...
- more time
- more miles
- more climbing
... I found myself wallowing in fatigue.
Don't get me wrong.
I'd line up, or roll out with the pals, and, though I might be quick to drift back...
... the ability to endure for hours was ridiculous.
Something snapped.
Or, lightning struck.
I dunno.
But, a few weeks ago, I woke up and said...
Screw it!
I'm cutting down the long slogs...
... and bringing back sprint days.
2-3 hours became 90 minutes.
With 10-15 VO2 max efforts,
lasting 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
I'm super fortunate to live close to trails with a lot of straight up and straight down...
... I let the terrain dictate how long the sprint lasts.

Then, focus on my DH skills...
... coasting, staying off the brakes, carving and carrying speed.
The upshot, after 90 minutes and 10+ solid efforts?
I feel amazing,
not pooped.
Sprinting engages all our muscles and focus...
... a total mind, body soul work out.
Soul?
Yeah, trust me.
Do 'em right, and you'll see stars and feel God's presence could be imminent.

YOU CAN'T GROW A BEARD OVERNIGHT

Houston, we have a problem.
Go ahead.
We forgot to add fuel to the return booster.
Sucks to be you.
Yeah.
We can't grow a beard overnight.
A good one, for some of us...
... can take months.
If we wanna be fast in the final sprint,
if we wanna negative split the course...
... we gotta put in the work before we need the result.

CULTURE WARS
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TRAINING groups. Both extend invitations...
... the similarities stop there.
One culture assures...
- everyone is ready to start together
- there are plenty of stops
- nobody gets left behind
... fairness and concern.
The other demands...
- leaving on time
- no stopping
- no waiting
... rugged individuals.
The group we...
- join
- create
- help grow
... depends on the result we are looking for.

DIRT WORLD PROBLEMS
EVERY SURFACE HAS it's challenges. Add in the weather, how we approach things...
... changes quickly.
Super mist.
The normally grippy sidewalk we were slaying to meet the rest of the crew, was not only glazed with moisture...
... bright green moss screamed Slow down and do not lean over.
We ain't rookies,
not a problem.
It was so misty, the glasses were tucked away.

The late Fall moon dust covering most of our trails and roads...
- forks
- shins
- lenses
... quickly 3D prints on to everything.

Bombing the first downhill...
- nearly 40mph
- no brakes
- 1 minute
... the dust and pebbles flying up stinging our eyes.
Two choices:
Wear the glasses,
blurry, smudgy vision.
Wear no protection,
smoke your corneas or contacts.
When the sun finally burned through,
I grabbed my glasses from my jersey pocket...
... they were covered in sweat.
lol
Truly, dirt world challenges.

ARE YOU LOSING OR COMPOUNDING?
BECAUSE EVERY DAY ISN'T RACEDAY, FOR ME. I hear that phrase often. At some point, someone will walk in and notice my hat and mid-conversation justify whatever thing they want to slack off on...
... clarifying they aren't racing every day.
Fair enough.
Nobody is.
I mean those cats racing around France are for three weeks. But even they aren't racing every day.
The sprinters scratch and claw over the steep stuff and barely make the cut.
The climbers scamper to the front on a sprint stage only to clear out when it things get feisty.
Some days RaceDay is just doing the bare minimum...
... expending the least amount of energy.
Other days RaceDay means sleeping in and getting a massage...
... yes, Every Day Is RaceDay.
Don't waste 'em.
Compound 'em.

WHY BANDIT RACING IS ALWAYS FUN
OUT HERE IT'S PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT ON A LEGIT ROAD RACE. Trust me, I was the last one to put one in these parts. Had to deal with dense, urban, few open roads, 2 police/sheriff jurisdictions, 2 cities, the county, 3 water districts, fire dept, etc...
... which is why bandit races are the happening thing.
Can I get a Hellyeah!
No we didn't blow and lights or cause too much of a ruckus. But, we did get a group of marauders and lit up the local roads with some fastfast times...
... consummated with a rolly, climby crescendoie explosive finish.
One aspect I love is because there are a few bucks on the line and an "official" standing, it's peppier and spicier than normal...
... even though it's mostly the same ol' guys and gals.
There were some cash premes at the regular hot spots, I even sponsored a RaceDay Bag™...
... for the last person up the vicious Mojeska grade!
Keep it fun.
And, as Chuckles said...
I'm glad I did this instead of the mountain bike race today.
Yeah?
Yeah, nobody's gonna see my name at the bottom of the finisher's list.
While true road racing suffers in CA, bandit racing is on!
Find one.
Create one.
You're sure to have a great time...
... all it takes is a Strava post and a couple of hundies from the usual suspects.
Shout out to the great JH (gotta protect the promoters' ID) for makin' Blake Silver happen!!

FRIDAY NIGHT (GARAGE) LIGHTS
IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT. Most folks are enjoying the evening, staying up a little later. Cutting loose. Not us. The garage lights are on, there's a race tomorrow...
... and a lotta wrenching to be done.
That's how it was a my pal's tonight.
He's reached a place few racers ever do.
He's got a racing family.
Which means, when I got over there to drop something off at 9pm he was...
prepping all the bikes,
while mama and babies were tucked in...
... and he was loving it!
There's not much better than a quiet garage, a good set of tools, and knowing your rig is ready to rip...
... and your family is gonna be racing with you in the morning.
Good luck to y'all!

ARE YOU RACING A HUNTER OR SCAVENGER?
THE LIGHT FURRY COAT JUMPED OFF THE BRIGHT SPRING GRASS' BACKGROUND. My survival radar registering the movement about a quarter mile up the way...
... lion or coyote?
That's always the question around here.
I've had upclose staredowns with each type...
... it ain't as fun as it looks on YouTube.
I slowed.
Back and neck ramrod straight.
Head on a swivel.
It was too far away to be sure.
Curiosity got the best of me and I pedaled on.
I could see it go into the brush to the right of the trail.
I continued.
Then it crossed into the green again, looked my direction...
... padded towards me, kinda loping.
Damn.
Strangely, I was undeterred...
... it's brazenness convincing me it was a coyot'.
Closer.
I whistled.
Yelled, Hayaaaah!
Finally it turned sideways, this would be it.
Cat or dog...
... dog, well coyote.
Slinking into the brush on the other side of the dirt road, the fur perfectly blending in with the dry brush from last summer.
Gone.
That's kinda how racing is.
Someone gets aggressive, and we have to decide...
... hunter or scavenger?
Scavengers are plenty.
They ply off the front, get a little fanfare, maybe... and I mean maybe... pick up a preme.
Hunters are killers.
They stalk,
size you up,
get into position,
and pounce so forcefully...
... you have no chance to respond.
Once you have experience with each species, as I have, literally and metaphorically, you learn to spot the difference.
Here's one tell...
... hunters are slyly confident.
Look for that cat at your next race.
Speaking of racing, I had a huuuuuuuge aha moment...
https://pedalindustries.myshopify.com/collections/raceday-calendars™
... I had my giant RaceDay Calendar™ out and Surfergirl walked into the room.
This is great!

THAT YOU'RE MOVIN' ON THE BACK ROADS
WE WERE CHARGING THE BACKROADS EARLY THIS MORNING. It had been over a month since I'd made the ride, I was excited to test my legs...
... but, this was not a test.
By sheer serendipity, my return coincided with the group's first hard ride of the year.
The offseason truce had ended.
Unplanned.
Unspoken.
Unhinged.
A certain gentleman decided it was time, hit it hard, took a few valiant ones along...
... I felt like the buzzer had rung, and it was time to put down my pencil.
This loser was not going to pass the test.
7 days to get a few more answers.
7 weeks until the real exam.
Time to pull my helmet low across my face,
and move on the back roads.
It's more than that really. If you're still reading I'll tell ya how it really is. I'm pissed, shocked, hacked off! Eff those guys. Showing off their early season fitness. Eff their backslapping at the finish. Their cat ate the bird smiles. Their patronizing Nice job Diesel. Eff it all. I'm gonna tighten up the diet, lengthen the miles, pump the weights, recover like no other. Eff y'all...
... till next week.
That's how it really is...
... gawd I love charging the backroads with these bastards!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COMPLETELY SCREW UP YOUR BIKE?
ON THE LONG LIST OF ROOKIE MOVES, things we've all done at least once and sworn to never do again...
... there is one that reigns king.
It happened on my favorite holiday of the year, during a beautiful afternoon, just after meeting up with some of the posse.
The settling sun softly lighting smooth trails, a light banter as we flew across the valley, then...
... a horrendous screeching of metal!!!!
Rocketing up an extremely steep pitch, I tapped my e-tap. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem. But, I was being a bit greedy, pedaling under a load trying to keep my momentum...
... I should have backed off.
It was actually a two-fer:
- Pedaling under too heavy a load to shift with out risking all that can go wrong in such situations.
- There is 1 problem with e-tap, sometimes, especially on uneven terrain, it's easy to double tap it on accident.
That poor ol' (actually new!) chain went up and over the 52,
into the beautiful, bladed spokes,
and deep into the hub.
It was wedged so deep I couldn't pull it out. Had to walk a few miles...
... lesson relearned.
Not to be repeated in any upcoming races.
Thanks to posse shredder Kristen for rescuing me!

NO, I'M NOT SAYING YOU'VE GOT A CHANCE
AFTER BEING MUGGED AT THE THUG RIDE, we met some friends for a big calorie download, and strained conversation ensued...
... Do you still ride a lot?
The ladies form the glue to this group, so the dudes just know me as that guy who likes to bike.
Yeah.
How often?
Most days, if I can swing it.
Now, I'm the oldest at the table.
Do you have any aches and pains?
Not really.
C'mon?
It's true. Any time I feel a niggle I figure it out. The key is to keep charging.
I know the guys were mixture of incredulous and envious.
So, we've got a chance?
I wanted to say Yeah, for sure, but I wanted it to stick.
No, you don't have a chance... you have a choice.

LOVE WATTS, BABY BAILS, AND HOW'S YOUR FRUIT BASKET?
ANY TIME YOU DRIVE TO A RIDE, it's pretty much a lock you're gonna do it regardless. But, when there's a legit tsunami warning...
This should be fun.
Yeah, we'll be at sea level right when it's supposed to hit.
Perfect.
Lots of spectators and safety authorities were out, but no tsunami to speak of...
... but, there was a helluva a tsunami starting at 8:15am...
... the feared and awesome Thug Ride.
It would be my first hard ride in months. Coming off my recent bout with Covid, I felt decently ready...
... afterall, my resting HR was back in the low 40s.
As expected, I struggled when things got hot. But, it felt good. Really good. The base miles I'd been putting in kept me in there for...
The pain.
The shame.
The chasing.
Meanwhile, a certain gentleman is riding about as good as I've ever seen. Up on the front most of the day. Pulling into the bottom of climbs. Making it over the very punchy walls.
Bro, what's new?
Well... I've been on a few hot dates.
And there it was, the secret to his dashing show of power...
... love watts.
Ain't no denying it, when the romance is good...
... the riding is good.
At the other end of the spectrum, was a certain lawyer. He also drove all the way down.
Sat in his car.
Texted us, Eff this rain!
I rang him.
Get out here.
No.
Don't be a baby.
I hate the rain, I'm going home.
Ok... call the sitter, have her read you a story and bring chicken soup for your pitiful soul.
Who doesn't want to ride 90 miles in the rain with the fastest cats in San Diego?
Which brings me to the fruit basket...
... my fruit basket got pretty soggy.
Time to dry off, and kindle up some of my own love watts.

2 X DISCIPLINE
DO YOU EVER WISH YOU HAD MORE DISCIPLINE? You know, something to keep you from going off the rails...
... and doing too much or too little?
Back in the olden days we had 2 X Discipline.
In the off season, we'd neverever use the big ring. There were small ring months, Oct-Dec. Sure, you can go plenty mcfast in the small ring...
... but, it's annoying enough to keep one in line.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, all mountain bikes and most gravel bikes are 1 X.
It's make shifting brainless.
Harder.
Easier.
So 2 X Discipline isn't really a thing.
The four seasons can help the weak minded.
Depending on the time of year and where you live, the weather could keep you outta the big and the small rings. Off the bike all together.
But, can it still?
Not really, not with all the nifty TrainerPelotoner things to choose from.
Season Discipline isn't really a thing.
Used to be race season lasted about 6 months.
Here, in CA, crit season and mtb season are on. They'll go straight through to fall when gravel and CX ramps up...
... and Zwifty got your racing back 24/7 in the comfort of your cozy cave.
Well, whatthehell are we s'pose ta do?
Can't 2X.
Can't blame the weather.
Can't trainer quit.
Only one discipline left.

RIDE LIKE YOU'RE GONNA MAKE IT
GETTING FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER can be a challenge. We know where we are, we see where we want to go...
... but there's a stream or boulder or gap in the way.
As we know from our riding experience, the correct approach is critical.
We need the skills, speed, line...
... and the right amount of pressure.
That pressure makes all the difference.
I have found my ability to gauge the pressure required is directly related to my confidence.
When I'm confident, I'm relaxed.
Unhurried.
It's still scary, there are still penalties if I don't make it...
... but those are muted.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
THERE'S A NASTY UNDERCURRENT AT MOST RACES. It has to do with respect. The new cat has none...
... the established have it all.
How you garner it is one question, why you want it quite another.
Some is earned by simply being a regular, being known in the racing community.
Some is borrowed by association with others.
Some by having skills.
All of it is earned, usually hard-earned work on the front.
Easily lost, most commonly by intemporance.
Why you want it isn't because your puny and fragile ego demands it.
No.
You want it because it opens the doors when the racing is frantic...
... you are allowed in, where the action is.
Today, I rode with a most intimidating group. The first time I showed up I was rudely escorted to the back. Given no quarter. I kept showing up when I could. Eventually made a few connections.
Now I get to play up front...
... if you call wheezing the rest of the day playing.
I'll leave you with two quotes from the movie RESPECT:
- I need you to focus, and avoid frivolous distractions.
- Find a song that moves you, until you do that you ain't going nowhere.
Of course, amongst the cars sometimes you need a little help... like a light!

MY REVIEW OF THE APPLE WATCH
AFTER YEARS OF ENVY, the kids got me an Apple Watch for Christmas. I wanted it for several reasons. Right away I loved it...
... then I sent it back.
Here's what I loved, and why I sent it back.
Loved:
- Easy, easy to dual record bike rides in case the Wahoo malfunctions. It is sooooo simple to import the activities to Strava.
- Waterproof, so I can record water sports
- HR is integrated so I can get more fitness data walking, surfing, resting, sleeping etc.
- Blood oxygen levels are easily checked - a thing at altitude
- Glance at the weather vs opening an app on the phone.
What I really wanted was those first 3, upload all workouts and more HR data. If my resting heart rate is higher than normal I know I'm sick or stressed or overtrained. In my world, that's important.
Other cool things
- Remote picture taking
- Appointments at a glance
- Timers... like set a timer for 20 min, then stretch
- ECG monitoring
- Find My Devices let me ping my missing phone
- ApplePay
Unexpectedly helpful
- Every hour, if I haven't moved it reminds me to stand up. For me, that means ripping off some pull ups or pushups or squats.
- Alarm to wake up, it's very gentle haptic nudge is quite nice
- Oh, and it's a watch.
Why did I send it back?
I sent it back because I wanted the data plan so that:
- I could ride with a tiny watch vs a giant phone in a case and still make calls if absolutely necessary.
- Connect more with my surroundings...
... you see any time there's a free moment I'm tempted to whip out the phone and check messages, social media, etc. Could be resting at a beautiful look out, or out to dinner with Surfergirl.
I'm weak that way.
Now, I'm a little better.
In case you're wondering... got the Series 7, small face, sport band.

... or do something a helluvalot more athletic!
Here's another big of electronics I like... like 'em so much I run 'em day or night.

IS IT TIME FOR A COACH?
WE ALL WANT TO BE BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER, LIGHTER. At least, I don't know one single person I ride who isn't trying get a little faster...
... usually with the least amount of work possible.
Nothing wrong with that, we're all plenty busy.
Question: if your life depended on getting faster would you
- Read a book
- Watch a video
- Ask a friend
- Hire a coach
Of course, your life doesn't depend on it...
... but, in a way it does.
Because all of those options above require time to achieve mastery...
... and our time is precious.
Maybe it's better to ask Who rather than How?

TESTING, TESTING, 1, 2, 3
I DON'T THINK WE CAN EVER DO MUCH TESTING, I'd guess we don't do nearly enough. It might even be worse than that...
... if you count all the testing done on RaceDay.
That's the rookiest move of all.
Hey man, what's that?
It's the new extraspecialgood humdinger.
Does it work.
Oh, for sure.
I don't fall for that any more, not that it's ever malicious...
... it's just plain crazy to try something new when it counts.
Months out from my bigcrazy goal to ride 150 miles from the surf in Dana Point to the top of Big Bear, I thought I'd do some testing.
Nothing too fancy.
Just wanted to mount up the 3rd bottle cage and load all three bottles with a drink I've experimenting with.
I'm using the Arundel cages, by far the strongest gripping cage I've ever found. Light, too.
The goal was to see if the bottle would become dislodged, and see how disgusting it was when it came time to drinkin'.
The cage worked great. No surprise.
No water crossings or horse poop, etc on the bottle...
... just a layer of dust.
The drink is a winner as well, although it is a little weird.
Let me explain.
A few years back, I came across this amazing drink. It delivered a ton of calories per bottle and had a mellow taste. This is definitely what you want when you need to drink your calories vs eat them. Such as bumpy trails and roads.
It had one problem...
... it was nearly impossible to mix.
I had to use a blender, and then it was so sticky it would gum up the bottles and bladders if it had a chance to settle. And it had this weird, slippery texture.
Really weird stuff.
This new drink is similar.
700 calories/bottle.
Same weird consistency.
But, it does mix well.
Allen Lim, SkratchLabs, developed it. The reason the consistency is unique from all other sports drinks is it's a different molecule. It's smaller. And it matters for digestion.
It's called SuperFuel.

RIDING THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD OF ROAD
IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE ROAD. And the road was dirt. And man rode bikes on the dirt road...
... until it was paved.
In the beginning (for me) was VeloNews. And VeloNews was printed. And racers read of racing in print...
... until it got digitized.
Road riding is like this prolific spawner of countless children:
- Road
- Crits
- Cross
- Track
- BMX
- MTB
- Gravel
In terms of popular energy, road is back to it's roots with gravel.
Road rides on with momentum and power and energy.
There was a time when I couldn't wait to get down to the local shop to pick up the latest copy of VeloNews.
Today, VeloNews announced it was merging with Peloton magazine. They're fighting for the printed lives. I respect the idea of banding together, but it seems like a marriage made in Roubaix during springtime.
VeloNews plays it pretty straight and covers a number nearly all of road's off spring.
Peloton, however, is artsyfoofoo. Romantic. Narrowly focused on the smallest sliver of road culture.
VeloNews print is officially dead in this iteration. Peloton is the print flagship with additional contributors from VeloNews and CyclingTips.
Will it work?
I dunno.
Maybe.
They are basically going on all on the great progenitor.
Long live Road!

THIS IS MY FAVORITE LENS
WHEN IT COMES TO RIDING, I prefer a photo-chromatic lens. It' easy to grab one pair of glasses for every ride. If it's dark, they are clear. If it's bright, the darken...
... but, there is another lens that is even more powerful.
It's got a special super low-tech coating called WIMMEF that anybody can acquire...
... without even going to the store.
With this lens I've been able to make dramatic increases in speed and other metrics of efficiency.
It works like this, everything I consider I ask myself...
... Will It Make Me Even Faster?
There are only 2 answers:
- Hellyeah!
- No.

Take PR Lotion for example.
My pal Matt turned me on to it.
What is that?

WHICH DAYS SHOULD WE FOCUS ON?
FOR MOST OF YOU, 98%, this is going to be gamechanger. Of course, if you've been hanging out her for a bit, it's not new. But, I'm willing to bet...
... many still don't believe me, and ya never tried it somewhere else.
You should.
The good news is I found a secondary source to back up my philosophy.
And what is said amazing wisdom?
YA GOTTA BE RESTED TO PRODUCE RESULTS.
If you want the science vs The Old Diesel's evil knowledge gained through experience:
- Readers go here: https://philmaffetone.com
- Watchers go here: https://youtu.be/dxODgYXOO7w
Now, let me help ya wrap your helmets around this concept okay.
- 80% of your riding should be Zones 1-2 to build your engine
- This will allow you to really focus and maximize the hard efforts
Those are two good points. If you'll take the time to do the research it will become abundantly clear.
But, that is not the most important benefit of this method...
... this is the most important, by far.
Building your fitness this way is the only way to sustain cycling for life.
We lose to many to burn out, because they ride too hard all the time.
Way too many lost.
Guess where else this works well?
If you're paid for results, and more and more of us are...
... this strategy of mostly easy days with a few focus days...
... is also a winner for bread winning.
https://pedalindustries.myshopify.com/collections/canopies-banners-and-flags
The big focus days, of course, are races.
Nothing better than hanging out at the race with the team, around the canopy.

I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF CHRIS FROOME
I'D REALLY LIKE TO PICK ON CHRIS FROOME. His nice manners. His Aw shucks, can't believe I won the tour again attitude. His wife sticking up for him in the early days...
... he's just begging for it.
It was all so picture perfect until he fell off his bike on a training ride...
... mangling his leg and other body parts.
So, he wraps us up in the drama of his big come back. I love underdogs, and I almost got sucked in...
... it coulda been so good.
Then, I just read he's gone and hurt his repaired knee by training too hard. He said it had been bothering him for 10 days. 10 days, riding with pain! Now he's gonna spend a bloody week off the bike...
... what kinda rookie move is that?
C'mon man, get your shift together!
There's just one problem with ripping into him in a family friendly place like we have here...
... what if I bumped into him on a ride?
It's not too far-fetched.
I have had the occasional run in with celebrity riders out riding: Cavendish, Phinney, Vails, Hegg, Bahati, Lettieri, Sagan, Van Garderen, Juarez, and more...
... so, what would happen?
It's always the same.
I'm star struck.
They're nice.
We pedal.
And talk.
It's hard as hell to pick on someone once you know them. Realized they're just another cat doing their best in this crazy world of ours.
Maybe he'll write a book one day about his struggles.
Wouldn't that be incredible?
Not the fairytale trash from 2015. I want the heartache of a tragic crash that seems to just keep seeping forward instead of moving to the past.
How he dealt with it.
I mean, at this point, does he really need the money? Couldn't he just retire as the greatest of his generation? Hand up the cleats. Spend time with family.
Get better Chris,
were pulling for you...

WHO DOESN'T LIKE AN EASY WIN?
MY MOST BIGGEST WINS, every single one of them, came easy. In fact, I'd say there were surprising...
... because I wasn't trying.
Don't get me wrong.
There was sweat, blood and tears poured into every on one of them. But, my aim was different on that day than on many others.
I was there to race.
When I "try to win", when I've "got to have" a desired result I am divided.
Thinking more of winning than racing is draining.
When I'm simply racing, not concerned with the outcome...
... I have all my skills.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/training
That's one reason I go to a lot of races: formal and training. To get rid of the jitters...
... so, I'm calm and able to focus on the racing.
Another thing I do is fill out my calendar as soon as it makes sense. Then, as I look at it and think of the upcoming events I visualize the days leading up to crossing the finish line.

EZZZZZIN' INTO THE NEW YEAR
WE BROKE TRADITION AND DID A BIG RIDE ON NYE VS NYD. A flattish 100 miles, Zone 2. The original plan was a gravel ride I'd dubbed DJ Diesel's MixALot of Surfaces 100k...
... but we received too much rain.
So we opted for road.
First, I should point out the harsh realities of riding with us:
- We leave on time.
- We don't wait for the dropped.
- We don't stop for mechanicals.
Why? Because we believe in...
- Respect for each other's time.
- Motivation through abandonment.
- Running good gear and being able to do our own repairs.
But, we broke all those rules yesterday.
I hope it's not a sign of things to come.
A few were dropped in the first 20 miles. Slowly eased off the back.
Then, a flat.
And another flat.
And yet a third rider flatted.
We kept going at an easy pace, thinking they would combine and catch us.
Then the doozy. Coulda been horrific. The double flat on a gaping pothole at 40+ mpgh.
Of course, it was a girl. And if she wasn't so nice, and her husband so pleasant, surely we'd have left them.
Maybe the fact that I was slowing to fix my own flat after being dropped helped...
... but, I hope not.
I really like our traditions.
Perhaps a tradition of making exceptions is a good idea?
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/dynaplug
Fortunately, I had all 3 dynaplug heads with me. I needed the sharpest one. The hole was tiny, yet big enough it wouldn't seal.
Took me 3 minutes tops to plug it.
Here's what the plug looks like after being inserted in the tire.
It's the glob.
I mashed it down a bit, then rode it another 60 miles.
My experience is that it will last as long as the rest of the tire does. They are really good.
Fast.
Reliable.

DYOU UNDERSTAND WAT I'M TALKIN' 'BOUT?
ONE OF THE BEST PIECES OF ADVICE FOR RACING is from the great Stephen Covey. He talks about 7 habits of successful people, be we are racers and this habit is a winner...
... seek first to understand.
I get that...
... but not the way he meant it.
He wanted us to understand where other people are coming from before we try to get them to understand us...
... here's why that's gold.
Especially in road racing.
So much strategy.
So many calculations.
I spend at least the first half of any road race trying to understand what each of my competitors has planned...
... what part are they going to play.
That might be a fake attack or latching onto a break and sitting in or just pulling hard for a bit or dangling off the back. Could, should start as early as pulling into the parking lot and seeing who's there and who's hanging out, who looks friendly though in different kits.
First, seek to understand...
... then, at the finish line...
... you can be understood.
Got it?
Honestly, I don't know why I give away these ideas for freely. Fortunately, I don't race road too much so nobody really knows me anyway. Heaven forbid some yokel understand me and leaves me understanding at the line.

DOES THIS SCARE YOU? IT SHOULD.
I'M GONNA MAKE A GUESS ABOUT MOST OF YOU. Your goals suck. They are weak. And, I'll prove it. Because I know for too many of you...
... your goals don't scare the shift out of you.
Think about this.
When are we most alive on the bike...
... when we are closest to death.
For me, that's the finishing sprint or dropping off a steep ledge or tucked in at 60+ mph.
Our goals, the big ones, should be scaring us to death.
The really good ones are where we know if everything goes absolutely perfect...
leading up to the race,
during the race,
and crossing the finish line...
... then, and only then, we might accomplish our goal.
Because it demands EVERYTHING, it's scary.
We have to BE THAT PERSON that can make it happen...
... not just wanting.
Everybody wants.
We must be.
When I said I'd break my 20 year old PR at Leadville in 2019, it was scary. I wrote it out every morning. I made a wallet that had Leadville Sub 8:20 printed large on it. It ain't easy pulling that out in front of your friends.
The thing I like about the giant RaceDay Calendar™ is that it's hung in a conspicuous place and my top 3 goals are front and center...
... for all to see.
If we aren't failing, we aren't trying.
What are my top 3 goals for 2022?
I'm thinking PR Leadville (again), win a national championship, ride from the sandy beach at Doheny to the top of Snow Summit.
That's not set in stone yet, but it's getting close.
How the hell can I go faster at Leadville? Surfergirl, my biggest fan, even looked at me askance. I'm a grampa now, 60 freakin' years old in April. She knows how much I put in last time and how many miracles we had. Ouch.
Win a national? I think it's within in me, either the crit or MTB marathon... but it would take a lot of luck. Crit sprints are always a roll of the dice, and the MTB marathon is in MD... I hate flying - this is a big one.
Doheny to Snow Summit is at least 130 miles, 15-20,000 feet of vert, on dirt and asphalt, across the concrete jungle, and the final 9000' will be on the sun exposed southern slopes. Alone.
My palms are sweating.
I hope yours are too, as you consider your big goals for 2022.
May you be scared,
very scared.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/training
This is the wallet I carried around with me for 8 months.
Every time I pulled it out I was reminded of that goal.

When you select the wallet, there's a button below Quantity. That's where you enter in your goal.
It's kinda like putting your money where you mouth is...
... it takes guts.

THE BENEFITS OF COLD THERAPY
SOMETIMES I PURPOSELY UNDERDRESS. When would that make sense? What could be the purpose? Well, it's not just frolicking about the house, I'm talking about riding fast...
... out in the cold, harsh world.
The purpose, I learned a long time ago, is because it feels good. I feel alive, connected to my animal nature.
Then, I started studying Wim Hof and got some excellent confirmation bias going.
Does this make sense to you?
Because we wear clothes and artificially control the temperatures at home and at work. we've greatly reduced the natural stimulation of our bodies, atrophying the age-old mechanisms related to our survival and basic function. Because these deeper physiological layers are no longer triggered, our bodies are no longer in touch with this inner power. The inner power is a powerful force that can be reawakened by stimulating these physiological processes through the Wim Hof Method.
It does to me.
Today I suffered such a fate. The app said 45, and reality said 35. It was so cold in my superlight RaceDay gloves...
... I lost some feeling and much dexterity in my fingers.
The toes were headed that direction as well...
... and the nose dripped and dripped.
I love it.
I'm alive.
Plus, there are benefits:
- It's healthy, getting that circulation going strong.
- It builds confidence, knowing you can survive the temporary pain.
- You learn your limits.
That's just riding.
In the 4-Hour Body, Tim Ferriiss shared a weight-loss hack. The ice bath. By lowing your core temperature your body burns more calories to warm back up.
But, the one I've come to love is that wonderful feeling as the sun's warmth spreads across the day...
... and the feeling returns in my extremities.
That
is
priceless.

THE LITTLE KID SECRET TO BIG TIME POWER
A VERY WISE COACH suggested we become like little children. Since I like to apply great teachings wherever possible...
... here's what I've discovered and how we can get a lot faster by being more child-like.
First, it's not because they are...
humble
trusting
quick to rejoice
quick to forgive
... nor is it that...
they love with their whole being.
... those are wonderful traits.
But, I'm talking about something kids do a lot better than 99.9% of adults.
They lift with their legs...
... by squatting,
not bending,
... all day long.
Trust me, I've been watching my own kid's little kid this weekend.
He squats throughout the day...
... just like you will be doing when you apply my soon to be released app, RaceDay Ready...

Is squatting what the great coach meant when he encouraged us to become as little children?
Probably not.
But, then again, all great coaches teach on multiple levels.

THE CHIPS & SALSA VARIANT
I LOVE A GOOD CONSPIRACY THEORY. Just chewing on a big What If? and spitting occasionally, with the fellas. So, let me share my thoughts...
... on The Great Reset.
With the tremors of the vicious Holiday21 Virus rocking our waistlines, I'm particularly concerned about the Chips & Salsa Variant.
There seems to be no way to stop it...
... from destroying our seams.
But, it's actually worse than it appears.
Because, though many of us have some Natural Immunity due previous exposure to Holiday20, many are just waking up to the fact that if the new yoga pants didn't fit this morning...
... It's only gonna get worse between now and Jan 1.
Many gyms are already bracing for capacity to be overwhelmed in early January. And, Lord, bless the server farms and remote coaches dedicated to reaching every single soul...
... succumbing to the feared Chips & Salsa Variant.
What can you do to protect yourself?
Get on your scales,
reset your goals,
lift heavy,
and ride.

LA NOCHE BUENA
YEARS AGO, LIVING IN MEXICO, I learned about La Noche Buena. Literally translated: The Good Night. Turns out for our neighbors to the south Christmas Eve...
... is a bigger celebration than Christmas Day.
Different people.
Unique culture.
Beautiful.
We have our own culture. Our lingo. Our customs. Our good nights before big races...
... the gifts we give ourselves.
For what else can we call an event that keeps our goals aligned, our health in tip top shape, our friendships strong and diverse?

LIFE'S BEEN GOOD
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT BEING GREAT that is just plain infectious. Doesn't matter who it is or what they are doing...
... they are great.
They figure out what they're great at, and do it over and over again...
... and we love it.
We wanna be great, too.
Last night, I found myself listening to the great Joe Walsh's Funk 49.
Recorded live.
On YouTube.
A million versions.
All of 'em great.
Which got me thinking about how much fun it is to ride bikes.
The speed. The rush. The whoosh of gravity.
We may never win a race, be famous, or get paid, but you can bet you lycra covered buns...
... nobody's ever ripped that corner near your house like you have.
Be great.
Like the song goes...
... Ride all day, Sleep all night.

WHO'S DESERVES COAL FOR CHRISTMAS?
BOY OH BOY, some of the fella's definitely deserve coal for Christmas. Today, on our friendly group ride, charging like a tsunami for the sprint, things got a little crazy, doors got shut...
... it happens.
In fact, I had my lane closed and I was forced right into the fence...
... as we coasted and gasped, and a hockey game broke out.
Guys off bikes.
Just crazy.
Don't get me wrong. I can become as enraged as the next guy when people are dangerous...
... I ain't no saint.
But, then...
... let it go, bro.
As the Buddha taught...
... How can I suffer when I'm not thinking of myself?
As Paul shared...
... For charity... seeketh not her own.
As the Grinch discovered...
... What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more!
It does mean more...
... starting with charity. (here's a refresher)

You might give someone that jacket off your back, but probably not this one.

WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT HOOKING UP?
DO YOU EVER JUST WANT TO HOOK UP? I do. And, I sure did today. So I put myself out there and got ready to lay down...
... for a quickie.
We have a network of new trails that were built in the summer and fall. They never really packed in. Instead, they were chunky and dusty...

Riding on trails like that is fine practice, but not nearly as fun as they are after a good rain like we had a few days ago...

WHAT I LEARNED RACING ON THE COBBLES
THERE ARE TWO WAYS to learn how to race on cobbles. Hire a top level coach, and do exactly as you're told...
... or, just get on the cobbles.
Nearly all of us simply go for it.
Therein lies the beauty...
- We try something someone said and it works.
- By accident, we discover a secret.
- We borrow from other sports.
- We study books.
- Watch races.
- We persist.
... it's our wisdom.
We cobbled it together.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/lotions-that-make-you-go/products/amp-pr-lotion
I remember the first time I heard about PR Lotion. My friend SupeDave commented on a FB thread.
Dave, does PR Lotion work?
Yep.
He's a man of few words.
Then my friend Matt starting kitting up for a race and applying PR Lotion like his life depended on it.
Does that work?
Yeah, I can't race without it.
So I tried it.
Now I'm hooked.
If a hard day is on the menu, I apply.
Why?
I don't like feeling pain nearly as much as I like inflicting it.

BAKE MILES
THE PLAN WAS TO MEET THE CREW AT 835, then roll over and join a larger, faster group. Simple enough...
... but, my groggy brain interpreted that as leave my house at 835.
Ugh.
By the time I'd realized my silly error I was 15 minutes behind.
Among the many objectives today besides seeing my friends and logging some base miles, was to
... get in an hour of intensity.
So it began, PRing a section I've ridden 220 times according to the Starva overlords.
But, why an hour?
Because, I'm very dedicated to the MAF Method at the moment. 80% of the week is Zone 2, 20% is Zones 4-5.
Since I'm actually still building base, I'm more like 90% Zone 2 and 10% 4-5. That will change in the coming weeks as I get closer to my first real A races at the beginning of March.
I like to think of the build up for an A race as baking sour dough bread. After kneading, you let it rise for 24 hours. Then bake for 30 minutes. After which, the bread should cool for at least 30 minutes or more.
That time to rise is akin to base miles...
... the baking more like the final brutal weeks of training...
... cooling, the ever critical taper.

NOW THIS IS TEAMWORK!
I HAVE THIS SECRET TEAM that really helps me get into great shape and get after it. They're awesome, wise, motivating...

How do I do it?
On any given day, they beatthehell out of me on the bike.
While they're all smiles and happy, occasionally rubbing it in...
... I'm taking notes like crazy.
How'd they do it?
Where'd they attack?
What could I have done better?
Later, I review that free lesson and incorporate it into my own quiver of tricks.
I'm happy for their win. They worked hard, executed well, maybe even had some luck.
That's cool...
'cuz I'm learning.

IS YOUR CHAIN TENSION CORRECT?
AS EVERY SINGLE SPEEDER CAN ATTEST, keep that chain tight. But, it's tricky, since there is no derailleur to pick up the slack...
... maintaining proper tension is an art.
Why should you care?
Because too much tension creates a lot of drag in the drive train, and not enough tension results and the chain falling off the rings...
... a perfect metaphor for our racing lives.
Too much riding,
we get over trained.
Not enough,
we get slow.
Diesel, this is lame.
Well... you are... as lame as your weakest link.
Yawn... heard that one already.

I'D RATHER BE LUCKY THAN LOTTERY
HAVING A LOTTERY 'CUZ YOUR RIDE IS SO POPULAR is a thing. For me that thing is Leadville. Due to a remarkable fitness hack, which I will kinda share below...
... I don't need the luck of the lottery for entry..
I'm in.
Earned it last summer.
Just today I was thinking it was time to ramp up the training and return to that most glorious fitness.
It was during the chilly and everpeppy Wednesday Worlds.
After a miraculous sprint....
... by my standards.
You see I had some good luck maneuvering to about 8th wheel with a 100 to go.
Then, nobody really went for it.
V for the old diesel.
But, I digress.
I was going to tell you about how to change your luck...
... via my fitness hack
Then, I got side tracked by an avalanche of email... one was a beauty, sent by a gentleman who not only cannot read but apparently is deaf... he was responding to my Free Book offer wherein I explain multiple times in SoCalSurfSpeak and text that the book is free, just pay the shipping. I'm so impressed by his intelligence and ability to understand my heavy accent I thought I'd post his kind and loving message before sharing something with you...
You said the book is free, but then you want to charge me $8.95 when I go to order. What kind of scam is that?
If you're into scams, you're going to love this one.
When you click here: https://pedalindustries.com/collections/training you are taken to my best training secrets...
... where you can sign up for Free to be alerted for my soon to be released app called RaceDay Ready™...
... the base version, will be free, and very useful...
... the 10 Week RaceDay Ready™ training plan is really going to set you back, though.
$7.
I know what you're thinking... Freakin Diesel spent thou$and$ to develop a free app, where I can learn and apply his diabolical methods, and now that nogoodsunuvvagun wants to gouge me a whopping seven bucks for the upgrade!
Yep.
I'm that kinda guy.
In fact, I'm worse...
... because this 10 week program to get your lycra clad haunches ready for RaceDay is so hard and demanding your gonna want that MASSIVE $7 investment back...
... you'll curse the day you ever heard of me...
... simply for doing my dawgawndest...
... to improve your luck.
Just do that cursing in SoCalSurfSpeak.

AND NOW A WORD FROM THE SUGAR SPONSORS
AH SUGAR, HOW WE BOW TO THEE. Well, not all of us, but the unwashed, those yet to join our cult of the wheel...
... they prostrate themselves before thee.
But, not out of any kind of conscious affinity.
They are slaves.
Addicts.
If only they knew the truth...
... and now a sobering word with the great Dr. Phil Maffetone, from his book Get Strong!
- Sugar is not just white or brown table sugar, but often disguised as sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, rice syrup, beet sugar, maltodextrin and others.
- Refined flour quickly turns to sugar after eating. This includes all processed flours (even those claiming to be whole grain) from wheat, corn, soy and others.

TRAINING THE COMFORT ZONE
ONE OF THE OFTEN OVERLOOKED BENEFITS OF ZONE 2 TRAINING is the concurrent, and typically untapped, training of the Comfort Zone. Beware, this isn't some foofoo guru hoohah...
... this requires a brave and playful heart.
Check it out.
Because we are much more clear headed in Zone 2 vs the seeing of stars lunacy when in Zone 5, smart people like us use this as an opportunity to get comfortable with speed.
Could be as simple as railing a turn and staying off the brakes...
... or as complex as shredding some single track.
Whatever the case, we should maximize every opportunity while thinking clear and not being out of breath...
... to learn and practice carrying more speed.
I noticed this on my MTB jaunt this morning.
After zipping downhill off road, at a pace many would be panicking, I saw my HRM indicating...
... a rather low 97 bpm.
There's no better time than Zone 2...
... to master getting comfortable with more speed.
All you need is a bit of courage and a lot of playfulness.
Look how comfortable Caleb is in the pic above...
... he's in the Comfort Zone.

INTERMITTENT FASTING, DOES IT BELONG IN CYCLING?
IS IT JUST ME or is intermittent fasting bigger than ever? Honestly, I'm not sure. Because when you think about it, in every major religion fasting plays a part in worship...
... with lots of criticism on doing it right.
The cycling zealots are no different.
Among the benefits I have personally uncovered during my journey, one stands out.
It started with an occasional, dab.
A monthly thing.
Then my friend Jorge went monk-like, fasting from Sunday evening until Tuesday morning each week.
Really?
Yep.
No food?
None, just water, coffee and tea.
I'm not there, but I am here.
Each Sunday I skip breakfast and lunch.
Understand, I rarely ride on Sundays so my caloric needs are minor...
... especially after a big Saturday on the bike and the commensurate overeating that follows.
The biggest take away for our particular religion of the wheel is this:
After the initial hunger pangs have passed, my energy is quite good. As well as my focus. Desire for food disappears. When I end the fast all I want to eat is...
... a nutrient dense, healthy snack.
That's it.
Just good stuff.
No junk.
A feeling which is lasting longer and longer, through to the following Sunday. So much so, that I look forward to the fast.
Maybe something to add to your own wheel worship?
Let me know.

LOSE IT OR USE IT.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS TIME OF YEAR is all the colors that come out for a few brief weeks or months. The lights, the parades...
... and the old, old, old team jackets from the 90's.
Unsurprisingly, the riders themselves are old, old, old as well.
Which brings up this parallel insight I observed on the peppy, groupy portion of the ride.
There we are sleighing it through town. The Hulk keeps attacking and gapping us. I bridge up a few times and the fellas do the ol'...
... well, if Diesel is willing to chase why help?
Like those old jackets, I had a choice to make.
It made no sense to keep pulling the Hulkster back.
I had to lose 'em, or use 'em.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, I love a midnight clear as much as anyone. Especially, if the following morning is cleared out for a hardy ride. But, following the good rains this week, that clarity can only mean one thing...

THE GOOD MECHANIC
CLIMBING UP THE LAST HILL BEFORE HOME, sheets of rain falling and cascading towards me, I thought about my spiffy, new bike...
... not my cold feet.
Feet recover.
Bikes seize.
Fortunately, I had only mistimed the storm by a few minutes. Though the bibs were soaked, the sidewalls were still somewhat dry.
Just needed to rinse down the road grime and dry off Hot Lava (bike's name).
The only tool I'd need is a dry towel.
However, If it'd been hours in a deluge and mud followed by letting the bike sit for a few days...
... I'd need a good mechanic.
Good mechanics aren't good just because of their skills.
A good mechanic has a beautiful work area, and the perfect tool for every occasion, and the parts needed.
Skills.
Tools.
Parts.
For 2022, I'm planning to master a lot of more of my wrenching. Part of the desire stems for the zen like state one can get in while wrenching in the garage...

BRING OUT YOUR DEAD
AH, THE GREAT MONTY PYTHON SCENE, Bring out your dead. I was thinking about that today as I latched onto the fearsome Swami's ride on the marine base. We were there to make a virgin offering, and I warned him to stay at the back, keep his mouth shut...
... and hang on for dear life.
Simple instructions.
Perfectly followed.
Resulting in premature ejection on Heartbreak Hill. Strava calls it something else, but they are wrong.
It's a heartbreaking.
A gentle rise, sweeping to the right, that eases off not nearly soon enough, and then sweeps to the left and down.
Nothing grows there, but grass.
Too much wind.
And so that scene from The Holy Grail.
He, along with numerous others, was tossed from the cozy group into the wide open and windswept plain.
The poetic match of the movie title and the call to bring out the dead is not lost on me.
Making that Heartbreak Hill is the holy grail of Swami's.

HOW TO ACHIEVE BETTER BALANCE
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BALANCING ACTS, and we must master each. I'll bet you know the secret to one of them. But, in talking with a local racer struggling with balance, I was prompted to remind him ...
... nobody gives a shift if you win a bike race.
I'm his coach, and he was expressing his frustration with balancing career, family and wanting to win every race. He is in the unusual position of actually being able to win many races if he puts in the time...
... he has real physical talents few of us have.
I get it.
My race shape waned for many years, the time we had all the kids at home.
I kept racing.
I kept winning.
Because, I defined winning differently than standing on the top of the podium. I continue to do that to this day...
... winning is knowing I couldn't have done a better job.
I sent him this quote from my book: No sporty success can compensate for failure in the home.
Which brings up the balance you have no doubt mastered.
On the bike.
And, the number one secret to that is to keep moving forward.
Wherein we find the mystical balance to achieve life-long racing success...
... keep moving forward.
Keep posting goals.
Keep challenging yourself.
Keep your expectations in line with proper balance...
... and remember, the people that love you, love you for you.
They want your time, not your trinkets.

WELL, DANG BRO... I'M SORRY.
I WAVE A LOT. To the cars who approach from behind, the side and ahead. The walkers. The joggers. And, of course...

Most, not all, wave back. And, why not? We are outside, away from the glass we spend so much time in front of...
... enjoying this beautiful planet.
This is where I find true connection to the great spirit. I see it everywhere, feel it's embrace. Maybe I'm conditioned...
... but, I don't care.
The other day I waved to a young man walking towards me, pack on his back. I mistook his quick pace for being in a hurry...
... he was full of anger.
His words, curt and salty.
Hurtful.
I carried on.
Should I have stopped? Asked if I could help? How could he not see the surrounding beauty on that glorious sunny morning?
It's hard to know.
My friend TD, rides with a bagel most days.
It's not for him.
He's on the lookout for a hungry soul. I've seen him find more than one. It's a beautiful thing.
Many are hungry,
some for a bagel,
some a wave,
others a hug.
Enjoy your ride today.
