HR TRAINING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE the joy of climbing with friends to a distant peak and poking through the clouds. Summiting is like having...
... the top of the world to ourselves.
All is calm.
Bombing down the mostly unfamiliar other side...
... not so calm.
Heaven forbid we'd let a gap open and get left behind.
Already on the edge of grip, I came into a sweeping lefthand turn...
... a negative radius, sloping downward.
I drifted all the way wide to the soft bulldozed berm.
Exiting, it was nothing but steep with ruts and rocks competing for my attention.
It wasn't looking good.
Somehow I managed to wiggle through the gauntlet.
My HR now sky high.
Only one thing to do, let out a huge...
... WOOOOHOOOOO!!!
Sheesh, my heart skipped a beat just reliving and writing this.
It.
Was.
Awesomeness.
Had I gone down,
I wouldn't have died.
But, it woulda been a bloody mess firshur.
Glad I kept my eyes open
and arms relaxed,
the tires held...
... just another reason to be grateful this time of year.

WHO KNEW WE WERE THAT BAD?
THE PROGRESS WE MAKE can be kind of embarrassing. We don't know it at the time. In fact, we're having so much fun those early pics and vids...
... can be kind of embarrassing.
There's hope.
Bad athletes,

THE OTHER 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
A LOT OF US plan to do some superspecialsecret training when nobody is looking in the coming days. Some are going so far as to...
... do the outrageous.
A gift to ourselves.
Which reminds me of one my pals who each year would ride a century 12 days in a row.
That was his goto way to start the year with a bunch of base miles.
Of course, the family and friends all thought that was...
... akin to getting coal for Christmas.
Personally, my overarching diabolical (counter season or counter intuitive?) plan is to...
- play around on jumps and technical stuff
- catch up with friends
- have fun
... make the training count.
What are you planning for 12/25 thru 1/6
While you're thinking about that...
... I'm sharing this kit with you in the off chance you're looking so spoil yourself with something outrageously sexy...

IS IT TOO LATE TO GO PRO?
THE SALARIES of the tops pro seem fantastic. The lifestyle unbeatable. Who doesn't want to get...
... paid to train and travel the world?

But...
... it's too late, you're too old, you lack talent, you don't have time, you're too young, your equipment sucks, your friends and family won't approve, you'll nevereverver freakin' make it...

we can still focus on...

- honing our craft
- doing our best

WE WON THE LOTTERY!
WE DON'T DREAM enough. At least most of us. When we do, and I'm not talkin' 'bout shut eye...
... we change our state.
Great things are suddenly possible.
I was reminded of this yesterday...
... my son was going to buy a lottery ticket.
He does this when it's over a billion.
I told him how much...
- it allows us to dream
- things we'd change
- do or never do
... I love and hate the lottery.
Name one thing you'd do?
I'd never get up to an alarm clock again?
Later, I reflected on my greatest day on the bike.
In 2022.
The insane Leadville goal of...
- a PR
- sub-8 hrs
- at age 60
... and how I did it.
The dream of sub-9 at sixty started years prior.
Always in the back of my mind.
But, there.
How it would feel to be in that kind of shape.
The closer the date got,
the more real it became.
Until I believed I could not only go sub-9,
but shatter my 6 previous efforts.
We can win our own lottery...
- crystal clear
- detailed
- belief
... if we'll just start dreaming.

IS IT THE SACRIFICE?
WHY DO SOME OF US stick with the endurance thing year after year after year and others check in for a season or two then check out...
... never to return?
There is something unseen happening.
I think I know what it is.
Sacrifice.
For better or worse...
- could be skipping a new car for a better bike
- an hour later out at night for an early run
- a quick swim instead of a tv binge
... we've sacrificed something.
That sacrifice produces the faith necessary to really go for it,
go for that insane physical goal we've set.
It gives us hope.
And, we love that...
... in everything we do.

YOU'RE GONNA SAY THIS IS IT
THINGS AREN'T GOING to go according to plan. Everything is going to go south. Everything. And you're going to say this is it..
... This is how I end.
You can accept that,
or you can get to work.
That's all it is.
You just begin.
Solve one problem.
And then the next.
If you solve enough problems...
... you get to cross the finish line.
Adapted from the closing scene of The Martian.
It's a long movie,
about solving problems,
which is what we do the moment...
... we register for a race or commit snagging that elusive PR.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
IF WE'RE REALLY LUCKY, and we (you n me) are, we'll stumble into something that keeps us endlessly fascinated. No matter how much we do it, or how long we put it on pause...
... it is always, ALWAYS, a ton a fun.
How can we do it forever?
At a high level?
Before I tell ya the answer...
- age
- friends
- failure to progress
... we gotta accept the challenges.
1. If we aren't on point with our health choices, age may ravish us...
... and not the sexy kind.
2. As the playground circles the sun...
... many of our friends will hang it up (see #1.)
3. Failure to progress...
... leads to boredom.
Today, I hooked my sassy grin...
- rode with younger cats
- picked up a new trick
- pushed my limits
... up to the firehose of youth.
1. Lucked into shredding a lot of single track with Steve and Brian...
... the schedules aligned, the conversations vibrant.
2. Coming in hot to a corner, Steve locked up the rear wheel...
... Why did you do that? To vector the turn and change trajectory.
3. Brian, did you launch off that rock?...
... Yeah, came around the turn so fast I had to.
The real secret to the fountain of youth...
... making and keeping young friends.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHOW A FRIEND AROUND TOWN?
GETTING A LONG-DISTANCE FRIEND TO VISIT is mostly rare, for most of us. We post to Starva, talk up our locale...
... to the point of bragging.
Then, the friend shows up.
Suddenly, we're wondering...
- will they be impressed
- can they keep up
- will they crash
... how this is gonna go down>
There was a time when Surfergirl would take such visiting friends aside and whisper...
... Be careful, he's kinda crazy.
Couldn't blame her as more than a few returned bleeding,
one with a broken bone.
It wasn't on purpose.
- I'd just forget
- be in the zone
- having a blast
... thinking they were doing the same.
The local, me...
... could rip the trails blindfolded.
Everyone else was riding blind.
Anyway...
... Tim did great today.
(I knew he would, and didn't really back it down at all.)

GOOD NEWS: THERE'S HOPE!
THIS TIME OF YEAR, the schedule gets crowded. The company parties, family get togethers, community events...
... we want to attend 'em all.
It eats into the training time.
And, that's good.
Just yesterdee, Surfergirl reminded me of our date to see Gentry.
Her favorite trio was in town for a Christmas concert.
Driving down, we wondered if we'd run into any friends,
walking in we saw my brother and sisterinlaw...
... seating, we were astonished.
We were exactly right behind them.
Couldn't have planned it better,
total surprise.
But, that's not the point.
We were carried away in the spirit of the night...
... all the world's nonsense, forgotten.
When we returned home, there was a package on the doorstep.
Incredible...
... a customer had hand made classic ornaments for each of our family members.
As a gift.
The real point is if we'll shut off the news, the pointless socials and get out to events and people we love we find...
... there's hope!
Hoping you'll find plenty of time to share your love for others in the coming weeks.

THE BEST FREE ADVICE YOU NEVER PAID FOR
WE ALL GET ACHES AND PAINS. Mostly, we just blow 'em off knowing in a few days things will right themselves. At least that's the idea. But, we are organic...
... our equipment is not.
It won't self heal,
like our miraculous bodies.
No matter how much positive energy we send it...
... those creaks won't go away on their own.
We gotta respect and inspect 'em.
I mean really figure it out.
Lemme splain it.
I've had an annoying creak for a couple of weeks.
Finally, last Friday...
- removed cranks
- checked, cleaned bottom bracket
- found a broken bolt on the chain ring spider
... thought that'd solve everything.
Mostly, kinda.
However, last steep climbs at end of Saturday's ride indicated problem not resolved.
Took into the shop for professional treatment.
Ace mechanic gives me a call.
It's not good.
How bad.
Axle in hub is cracked.
Yikes.
Yeah, it coulda been bad.
How bad?
Well, if it broke while riding it would have destroyed the hub innards, and...
And, what?
... and possibly locked up the wheel.
Now, I dunno how things are where you live, but on that ride I'd just finisihed...
... I hit 35 mph over a rocky, gravel fire road.
Had that wheel locked up...
... I'd be dead, at best.
Consider this the best free advice you Never paid for...
- bike
- bones
- muscles
... Fix thy creaks!

HAVE YOU HAD A CLASSY SMOKE, LATELY?
CELEBRATING AN EPIC EFFORT is, can be, a powerful factor in repeatability. You know, whether or not we ever do it again and...
... gain the associated benefits.
Old time movies we so classy.
In black and white.
Couple meets,
goes to dinner and dancing,
the very next scene we see...
... they are covered up, smoking in bed!!!
Here's how we do it most Saturdays.
Meet up at the corner,

the next thing we know...
... we're at the country store.
Cokes, RedBulls, chips, even had Zingers yesterday...
... our version of smoking in bed.

- guaranteeing many repeat performances

APPRECIATING A ROUGH START
FOR SOME GETTING STARTED is easy, for other it's hard. Even messy. So, what's better...
... an easy start or a tricky start?
Take today.
We'd climbed 4141', 13.4 miles.
The start, though steep, was pretty smooth.
The final 4.5 miles, were quite a bit rougher.
Lots of rocks.
I really suffered that last 2ish miles.
After a bit of a break,
it was time to plummet back down.
We pushed the pace pretty good those first 4 1/2 miles...
... over terrain I've flatted on many times.
I knew the next 9 miles were smoother, but...
... after the previous beating they seemed like a freeway.
We screamed down.
Surprisingly, I posted my 3rd fastest time ever.
(In case you're wondering if that was my 3rd time down, it was my 44th since 2012, per Starva)
This served as a good reminder...
... if we push through a rough start, we gain the skills to go much faster.
===
Further update on the Conti Dubitals...
- they roll reallyreallyreally fast
- corner dependably at high speed
- seem to be pretty darn puncture resistant
... I'm loving 'em.
Looking forward to playing with pressures,
I think I can run lower than the 16 and 17 I ran today.
(that was in the cold garage, before the heated up on the actual ride which would increase the pressure by a few pounds)

WHAT ARE WE RIDING SATURDAY?
WE ALL HAVE A RHYTHM TO OUR TRAINING. We have a favorite rotation of workouts, training partners, intensity...
... just like the goto dinner schedule.
When all else fails, I know spaghetti and meat balls is a winner.
No matter what I have planned.
When it comes to Saturdays, the...
- crew
- pace
- route
... I have a few defaults.
If I've had two hard sessions during the week,
I'm leaning towards a longish sweetspot/tempo ride.
If the week only had one high intensity completed,
I'm gonna wring it out on Saturday.
This week's Wednesday Worlds was kinda hard, therefore...
... tomorrow I have a nasty 1ish hour uphill TT planned.
The younsters are gonna make me hurt.

TACKY, TORQUEY TESTING... CONTI DUBNITALS
GETTING NEW EQUIPMENT is always fun. Usually, it is preceded by all kinds of Kool-Aid drinking. You know, the marketing team laying it on thick...
... and our friends laughing at our antiquated ways.
This week, I bit.
Finally jumped to wider tires.
From 2.2 RaceKing in back and 2.2 CrossKing in front to...
... 2.4 Dubnitals, front and rear.
My testing took place on our local single tracks...
... while doing low-cadence, torque climbing in Zone 2.
I'd rip down,
ponder performance on way back up.
Going from 2.2 to 2.4 doesn't appear to be much,
the tires are a bit lighter than the 2.2s
My initial...
- they go from edge to edge much quicker
- seem to roll very fast
- traction is great
... reactions.
I think they're gonna be a great upgrade,
will test on the smoking fast downhills, Saturday.

MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION
IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise a child, then, for us, it obviously takes a group to train us up proper. The right gaggle...
... has countless benefits.
Number 1 being speed.
Which is why I did the Wednesday Worlds today, and rolled right into...
... Pain Cave.
When we're on form,
this is an hour segment of riding just below detonation.
Today was much easier...
- the group was slowish
- BBB and I cruised Pain Cave
- catching up and discussing next year's goals
... we were 5 minutes off the PRs.
That will come down because we committed to some rather outlandish goals.
Which means, we'll be pressing the pace on the WW ride,
then duking it out on Pain Cave.
Leading to our mutually assured destruction the rest of the work day...
... and, what we hope will be a massively successful 2026 campaign.

OTB OR OTB?
WE HAVE ALL THESE CODE WORDS and acronyms in our culture. The deeper we get into it...
... the cryptic they become.
Here's the mechanic's favorite...
... I was just riding along.
His eye's roll and he scribbles on the notes...
... JRA.
I heard another from a shop owner who was barely hanging on and his "loyal" patrons were constantly asking for discounts and free stuff...
... he called them Freetards.
I've been guilty of both of those and quickly cleaned up my evil ways once I got the hint.
But, this one...
... it's been hard to stay away from.
OTB.
This one is a two-fer,
I can't get it out of my mind lately.
Off the back...
... which is where I seem to be finding myself a little more than my liking.
Over the bars...
... luckily, my recent wipeouts have been on solo rides.

ARE YOU CHOPPING WOOD?
WE ALL HAVE A FAVORITE MOVIE, book or story. One that inspires us to be more than we currently are, or return to a place we once dominated. These myths are important because...
... they can lead and guide us to a better future.
Truly powerful.
One of my all time favorites is Rocky IV.
Rocky, seeing his once enemy, the great Apollo Creed, who became his friend and mentor, get crushed by a Russian giant...
... decides he must do something completely different.
He must go...
- runs
- pulls a sled
- carries logs
- throws boulders
- chops down a tree
... to snowy and freezing Siberia.
Maybe it's winter,
maybe it's cold...
... maybe they only way to get nasty fit is chopping wood like Rocky.

EARNING VS LEARNING
LIFE IS LIKE AN EPIC CARD GAME. We're dealt our genetic hand. As little children, we have no idea...
... we're just running around having fun.
Somewhere around the age of 8 or so we realize...
... we're not all created equal.
I can throw,
my aim is woeful.
I can run,
my friends are faster.
I can swim,
holding my breath is a struggle.
Most of us here, found we love to endure...
... persistence and suffering are out super powers.
We can't earn our way to a sub-4 minute mile, but...
... we can learn how to be faster and more efficient.
That's the journey we are on.
Learning how to be our best.

ARE YOU COMFY?
WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT comfort zones. How we want to avoid them because they hold us back, lead us to settling for...
... more than we can be.
Who wants that?
Things I think about after a less frightful drop down one of my all time favorite descents.
I held the KOM at one point,
still top 11.
Back than, I was really, really at ease on that screamer...
... in a state of flow, relaxed.
Comfy.
The good kind.
Yesterday, on the same segment, I was a hot mess.
Smiley on my rear wheel, showing his front wheel, asking...
... Are you riding cautious?
I wanted to say...
... Heck no, and Screw you!
Things were not flowing,
I was gripping.
Hard.
It was very uncomfortable because I haven't been on my MTB much the last year or so.
Practice leads to comfy,
comfy leads to flow,
flow leads to ripping.
Effortlessly.

THERE'S A LEGENDARY CLIMB
SOARING 5600' ABOVE SEA LEVEL, we have access to a legendary climb. A gravel fire road. It's the kind of challenge we can sink our teeth into, get a baseline for our fitness...
... set legit goals.
The mountain ain't movin'...
- 9 miles
- 3000'
- 6.3%
... but, we are.
The KOM is held by current world tour pro Kevin Vermaerke,
which he probably set in the NICA days.
53:10
The next 9 are local legends...
... the legit kind, not the goofy Starva thing.
There are two ways to view...
- I'm slow, and I suck
- I'm slow, and I can improve
- I'm slow, and I'm dawgawn grateful to be ripping with my pals
... today's traditional Thanksgiving effort.
One more takeaway.
When I set my PR, we lived much closer to the mountain and I'd ride it 3-4 times a month.
It was a goto.
And, it got me thinking...
... if I wanna slay like that again, I gotta do it more.
Maybe every week for the rest of 2025,
and chop 18 minutes off today's time?

I NEVER LIFTED WEIGHTS UNTIL I GOT INTO THE NFL...
MOST OF US ARE PROBABLY HEADING OUT for the local turkey trot or some sort of holiday ride. It's tradition, followed by the traditional...
... Did you ride or run today?
Which deserves...
... Yes, and the sun also rose this morning.
Earning an...
... I bet your hungry!
Usually followed by a...
... I didn't know you could eat so much pie!
At some point someone will turn on "the game".
As full as we are,
as much as that lycra gonna be stressed tomorrow...
... we realize endurance training doesn't favor or create massive muscles.
Which brings me to one of my all time favorite athletes...
... the Great Hershel Walker.
Dude was devastating in college and NFL.
This quote must have been so humiliating to those left flattened on the field....
- 2000-3000 pushups/day
- 3000-5000 crunches/day
- hundreds of pullups/day
- hundreds of dips/day
- air squats and lunges thousands
- 20-50 yard sprints
... I never lifted weights until I got into the NFL.
Damn.
We may not be - ok, never will be - built like Hershel, but...
... kinda makes ya wonder how much stronger we could be.
Dedicating little time,
from home.

STRATEGY VS THE DREAM
LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR yet? Maybe it's too early, I mean jeez it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But, almost...
... so, it might not be too soon.
There's no rule on that.
I was thinking about this on my ride yesterday.
What comes first...
... strategy or the dream.
Especially with all the InfooIncers on the socials.
You know which ones kill me....
... literally saw this one today...
... Download My 47 Points To Master Advertising Now!
hahahahahah
But, you get the idea.
We can get so hyped up on a new (to us) strategy...
- Single-legged box jumps while hula-hooping for explosive sprinting
- One million grams of carbohydrate from bonking to crushing
- Sleep like a grizzly and maul the group ride
... we start looking for a race to unleash.
I've done it,
still do it.
We can all be suckers,
the cons are as appealing as the conmen.
Anyway, what I concluded after zonetwoing my way around town was...
... The Field of Dream if we build it, they will come...
... is kinda right.
The players, errr strategies, don't show up until the field is built.
In other words, once we identify the...
- A race
- impossible PR
- unconquerable route
... then, and only then, will the strategies we need be apparent.
Let me say it differently.
We can quickly toss aside...
- techniques
- strategies
- hacks
... the worthless dross.
Because the really good stuff that works is easy to see...
... once we have our dream/goal/desire firm and clear in our minds.

NOT AS GOOD?
JOURNALISTS ARE SO MUCH SMARTER than us fans, they have incredible insights we just can't fathom. Why it's a wonder we even...
... bother seeing with our own eyes.
This is gold.
A journo says...
... MVdP is nowhere near as good as Tadej.
On the heels of saying...
... MVdP beat Tadej on the races he wanted to win.
He being MVdP,
and he being Tadej.
Wait,
what?
He's not as good,
but he beats him?
Oh, journo.
Here's the dill, and...
... it's a good lesson for us lowly amachuros.
On certain courses...

The challenge is to find our course.

MY VICE IS TERRIBLE, MY CULT IS WORSE
FEW OF US HAVE BEEN TO AN AA MEETING, but we've seen TV/movie version many times. Hi, I'm Todd and...
... I'm an endurance junkie.
Hi Todd.
When we come clean with the general population, Today I...
- swam 10,000 yards
- rode for 5 hours
- ran 20 miles
... they think we're crazy.
We're not.
The adrenaline rush of ...
- 60 miles an hour in nothing but lycra
- the swimmers blue mind
- the runner's high
... we need that hit.
Regularly.
This risks we take...
- sending it down the mountain
- running along into the cold, dark night
- impossibly holding our breath one more length
... would freakout any life insurance company.
These sensations of pushing well beyond normal, reasonable, safe...
... are often all that's keeping us stable.
In all sincerity, because the allure of the lottery and dulling our senses with substances is so very tempting and tragically treacherous...
... stay dangerous my friends.
The sane kind.

HOW WE SOLVE PROBLEMS
SOME PROBLEMS ARE HARDER than others to solve. It can be frustrating when the answers just aren't coming. This is...
... how I solve my problems.
It's a question of time, right?
The truly unsolvable problems need marinating...
- clearly identify what needs to be solved
- set aside time
- get outside
... during a very lazy ride, run or swim.
The only goal is to solve the problem.
A stop for a pastry and drink is often required...
... I carry a journal and a pen to help me flush out ideas.
The best problems take require more...
- miles
- creativity
- "fuel" stops
... 3 or 4 or a lot more sessions.
Just today I was trying to figure out what to focus on...
- goals
- events
- milestones
... for next year.
Went for a ride,
had a brainstorm,
came home to the Giant calendar.
And they think we ride just for fun and fitness!

BECAUSE IT'S BEAUTIFUL
WE ALL HAVE A WAY to perform. Whether it's vanquishing, showing off, sufferfesting, truly enjoying every moment, our individual efforts...
... leave a lasting impression.
On others,
on ourselves.
Is there a best way?
Right way?
Only way?
Let us not gaze into our own navel but...
- racers
- promoters
- business leaders
- matriarchs and patriarchs
- community and governments
... appreciate for better or worse.
It is what it is.
I was recently struck by a singer...
- unknown by most
- unwilling to submit to label demands
- who died without much fame or fortune at 33
... sold more than 10,000,000 records posthumously.
What?!... how? who?
The great Eve Cassidy sang as if every song was a gift to the listener,
with uncommon love and passion.
Nothing more.
May we all do our thing with such beauty.

ON THE GAS
A LITTLE KNOWN SECRET to not falling over is going faster. It's counterintuitive. But, it's the first thing we taught the kids when they started riding motos in the desert...
... speed is our friend.
Then why did I suffer so badly last weekend in a desert-bound gravel race?
You didn't have a motor Dingdong!
No, it's more than that...
... and I've thought about it a lot this week.
The 92-mile race
- low gradient climbs and descents
- long, long straight roads
- mostly flat
... provided very little coasting.
We had to stay on the gas.
It's not like the terrain here,
most of my ride profiles look like a lumberjack's saw blade.
Anyway, I'm thinking about that this week because I'm starting to do sweetspot training...
... 90% of FTP, without coasting.
I've got to stay on the gas (the pedals).
It's hard to do when we have so many punchy climbs and lots of turns.
But, I'm a committed fool when it comes to this stuff.

TAKE TWO, AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING
GETTING A COLD is annoying. Can't train like we want to, can't sleep well, hard to be productive. If we get near our lover fingers are raised in an X...
... so, what do we do?
To speed it up.
There are my goto...
- Zicam at first hint
- Pollo Loco tortilla soup
- Insanely hot and long showers
... rider's tales.
Then there's what I did today...
... which could massively backfire, tomorrow.
I woke up,
it was cold.
I had a cold,
and hemmed and hawed.
I consulted my alter ego Dr. Goforit, who said...
- raise your body temperature
- the nose will start to flow
- blow that gunk out
... Put on a kit and get on two wheels.
Torture.
I've had mixed success over the years.
I'll either be on my way to pneumonia...
... or good as new tomorrow.

THE GODLY CONNECTION IS STRONG IN THIS ONE
BEING OUTSIDE and unplugged is more than just an escape from "the real world". Most people in "modern society" rarely experience what that is like. We do because...
... that's where we thrive.
And, we're moving fast.
Even if we're practicing our craft daily,
and the whether is good,
we could use more.
Not less.
I experienced a snippet of much more on our road trip.
We took time to visit the land my greatgreatgrandfather homesteaded 100 years ago.
No one else was there but us.
Access is via a gravel road,
10 miles from a 2-lane highway.
No cell service.
The only inputs,
each other and nature.
The peace and solitude remarkable.
Over night, the temps dipped low enough to freeze the rain puddles from the prior evening.
We were cozy,
the van has a heater.
Still, when we rose to stretch and visit this hallowed land filled with childhood and parenthood memories...
... we were shocked by the reality of nature.
Not in a negative way,
one that makes you feel alive,
connected to more than a paycheck and bills.
To God.
To acquire the land...
- the extreme temps at 7000'
- the distance by horse or wagon to town
- the loneliness during the months no one came to visit
... E. M. Whiting had to stay on it and not leave, for two years.
How else could he make such a sacrifice if not feeling a closeness to his creator?
I feel it when I'm...
- there
- in the surf
- on our local trails
... and love it.
Need it.
And so...
- walk
- hike
- ride
- run
- surf
- swim
- camp
... we keep inviting and encouraging our friends to join us.
Outside.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE...
DISNEY CREATED AN EMPIRE animating fairytales. Because the appeal is so strong, with little to no cultural barriers we have to ask ourselves not just why, but...
... which is our favorite.
Then, why?
Personally, Cinderella is my top choice.
Not just the story arc,
the snappy dances,
or catchy songs.
There's an orphan in all of us.
Often we don't see who we really are,
out talents lying dormant.
Could be naysayers,
could be something else.
It's nice that Price Charming is a price,
it's charming that he sees Cinderella as she really is.
The point isn't...
- Where's my prince charming?
- Who will save the day for me?
- Why am I not picked?
... to wallow in our sorrows.
The point is for whom are we Prince Charming?

IT’S IN OUR DNA
TOO FEW OF US know our family history. Some barely know cousins. Great-grandparents? Forget about it. It’s just not a thing. And, yet…
… what could be more important?
To know their stories,
is to know ourselves.
Which is why we drove hours out of our way after the bike race.
Here in eastern Arizona, to soak of our roots.
Surfergirl’s great-grandfather helped settle Snowflake,
my great-great grandfather helped settle Saint Johns.
They are neighboring towns,
about 20 miles apart.
And the communities were quite friendly with each other.
You’d think we grew up out here,
and that’s how we met and married.
Not so.
I was born and raised in SoCal,
she was raised in Hawaii.
Maybe somethings are meant to be.
But, that’s not really the point.
This is hard country,
the high desert.
To carve a life and community out of nothing took strength, smarts, and massive cooperation…
… the same qualities it takes to complete very challenging endurance events.
Who is an ancestor that inspires you?

I WANNA PUT A DENT IN THAT GIRL
IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE we can say and do the craziest things. You know things we might not normally say or do. And, at the time...
... they sound/seem totally normal.
Like today.
I had the awesome opportunity to flat 15 minutes into the 92 mile race...
... suddenly I'm swearing like a sailor.
It wasn't horrific,
still, glad no one was around.
Spent the next 50 miles basically riding by myself.
Doing my best.
Jumping from group to group.
I roll up on one of the female leaders,
bridge across to another badass Barbie.
And, I hear her say the funniest thing...
... I wanna put a dent in that girl.
Speaking of the other racer.
I visualize a halloween scene,
hatchet stuck in the helmet.
Hahaha.
Then the crass, neanderthal in me thinks...
... that sounds like something I'd like to do on date night.
Not the hatchet...
... if you know what I mean.
These crazy thoughts are birthed in our very depleted states, as we...
... do our best to stay upright and moving forward.

WHY WOULD ANYBODY GO TO DOUGLASS, AZ?
RACING VENUES ARE HARD TO COME BY, especially in big cities. Almost impossible. The result is the bigger the race, the more likely we are to travel...
... someplace we've never been.
Would never go.
Here I am,
two hours south of Tucson,
on the Mexican border, in Douglass, AZ.
This gravel race has the same vibe as my first Leadville,
back in '99.
Small town,
somewhat forgotten.
Which makes it a perfect place to stage a gravel race...
... surrounded my endless gravel roads.
I decided to sponsor the race for three reasons...
- Mike, the promoter, is hella nice and persistent.
- He's a huge fan of our products
- I'm a huge fan of gravel races
... which are the only reasons to sponsor anything.
Passion and admiration for what each other are doing.
Funny story.
I have actually been here before.
Back in the 80's.
I was doing missionary work in Mexico and our visas needed to be renewed. Five us youngsters piled in a van and hit to Agua Prieto, MX. The plan was to walk across to Douglass, wait five minutes and walk back with new visas.
We were greeted with...
... No, no gringo. No se puede asi. (Not so fast whitey, you can't do it like that.)
So we...
- spent the night in Motel 6
- chomped Pizza Hut
- watched ESPN
... forgot all our Spanish.
And crossed back the next day.
I'm guessing Borderlands gravel will be slightly more challenging.
Good night now.

HURRY UP
IN OUR EFFORTS TO GET FASTER, we often think of the many benefits. Mainly health, youthfulness. And truth is...
... we are better than most, not as good as some.
Who's better?
By that, do you mean...
... how could anybody be better???
We are aerobic machines, and that is a key to longevity.
Mostly.
Here are...
- Sprints
- Weights
... the missing ingredients.
I know, I know...
- sprinting sucks
- weights can be dangerous
- and, for the weenies in the back, who wants to gain weight?
... what you're thinking.
According to research, when we lift weights not only do our bones get denser but there are intra-muscular gains to be made that we cannot get any other way.
You know what else is weird, most people in our culture never sprint again after their early twenties.
So, here's the main takeaway from all scientific facts do 'em and...
... move faster, age slower.

GIVERS
THERE ARE THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER selflessly and those who volunteer selfishly. Both are admirable. In fact, when I was a race promoter it blew my mind that...
... people just reach out and offer their assistance.
Just giving where there's an obvious need.
I ran into a selfish one tonight.
The sun had set,
my headlight was on.
I was making my way cautiously because the ruts on this particular trail are bad and...
... there's an enormous sinkhole that might kill ya.
As a get there...
... did I say it was pitch dark?...
... a man is standing with a shovel in one hand and a trowel in the other.
Creepy?
Scary?
Nope, I knew what he was up to.
Not burying bodies...
... prepping the trail so when it rains this weekend the ruts will fill in.
I stopped.
Introduced myself.
Thanked him profusely.
No need, I just moved here and can't believe how lucky we are to have these trails right here. Just wanna make 'em perfect for my kids and me to ride on.
To which I could only say...

I THINK I VOIDED THE WARRANTY
LIVING IN THE ACTION SPORTS MECCA of the world, I'm surrounded and influenced by all manner of creative, ingenious athletes. We all feed off each other. My friend Kody...

My new MTB was in need.

Got a mount for Roval bars?
Yes.
Cool, I'll get one.
We haven't tested for lights yet.
He thought I was asking for my road bike.
So yeah...
- the road mount is super aero
- looks freakin' awesome
- supports a light

2026 WILL BE HERE soon enough. Many of us are already planning work, vacations, family time...

- Dream equipment

If not this year...
... when?
'Cause here's the deal, if we only did one race next year...
... we could probably make it happen.
It's just a mental game, play it out, and let me know...
... where, when and why.
Me personally, my top choices...
- Gravel Burn, South Africa
- Oregon Trail
- Rebecca's Private Idaho
... are gravel stage races.

THE REBEL ALLIANCE IS GROWING
EVERY NOW AND THEN a new format or race or course or piece of equipment comes along with promises to change everything. Except hardly anything changes...
... until something sparks.
How does that work?
Like this.
About 10 years ago, I purchased my first gravel bike.
My friends, like me, were roadies and mountain bikers.
A gravel bike seemed like the worst of both worlds.
I got it,
understood where they were coming from.
Except, I was having so dang much fun...
... I didn't care.
I just kept riding gravel,
inviting my friends,
enduring their
mockery.
It wasn't overnight,
more like overdecade.
The last two Saturdays, most telling.
Eight days ago, an absolute shredder on a mountain bike shows up on a spanking new gravel bike.
30 minutes in, he's grinning and shouting...
... This looks so wrong, but gadang it's fun!
Today, another pal shows up for his first group gravel ride.
He's gifted off road, we spent years riding motos in the desert...
... We're going 30+ miles an hour, I can't believe how much ground we can cover!
Does that mean you should be riding gravel, too?
Maybe.
But, really, it's just a lesson in how things that are worthwhile spread.
Then again...
... What did the gravel bike say to the road bike?
I am your father.

FAMOUS COACHES ARE GETTING FIRED RIGHT AND LEFT
IN PRO SPORTS, or high level amateur, there is always a spot light on the coaches. At some point, blame or credit lands...
... squarely on their shoulders.
Should it?
I do love to follow college football...
- the emotional swings
- the athleticism
- the stadiums
... so much energy and unpredictablity.
Who would have thought so many megamilliondollar...
... coaches would be punted this year.
Mid-season.
The great Seth Godin wrote The Gap.
The idea behind the book is when we find ourselves unable to close the gap to our goal...
... the sooner we decide to quit and move on, the better.
It might be a pro gambling tactic as well...
... but, the only gambling I do is putting my heart, soul and cash into this business.
Anyway, would you have/have you had the guts...
... to change directions, and how quickly would you do it?

CHOOSE WORTHY ADVERSARIES
WHAT IS IT ABOUT LOVING UNDERDOGS? It's so uniquely American. Is it our origin story, the DNA of our culture...
... to cheer for the fighter with no chance?
Honestly.
Who can't feel a bit of their own soul being crushed with every blow the awesome Apollo Creed delivers to a...
... bloodied, bruised, crushed Rocky Balboa?
We've all been in that arena.
Had the bell ring.
Still standing.
Somehow.
We humans thrive against overwhelming adversaries...
- inspiration
- desperation
- exasperation
... oozing with confidence and power.
When our all is required,
we discover who we really are.
As the great Kierkegaard said...
... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

MY TOP 5 SPEED HACKS
FOR MOST OF US, going faster, getting better, has less to do with a fancy new gizmo or the latest training fad. We know that...
... but, what are doing about it?
Like the Mastercard ad says...
... some things are priceless.
Here are five...
- Sleep
- Nutrition
- Strength
- Maintenance
- Consistency
... anybody can do.
These are my hacks.
Sleep.
Figure out when we want to wake up. Get in bed 8 hours prior to that. Stay there until it's time. Eventually, our bodies get the hang of it, and boom... we're sleep doping.
Nutrition.
Eat clean. No packaged foods. If we can't identify the ingredients, we don't consume it.
Strength.
Do the basics, at home. We don't have time to drive to the gym. No need to do all the sets at once, break 'em up throughout the day. Hardly any equipment is needed: pull up bar, a few dumbbells (adjustables for the win).
Maintenance.
New equipment is so nice because it is all tight and precise. Flawless maintenance will keep that new equipment performance for years, and we'll always be race ready.
Consistency.
If we always train at the same time magic happens. Those around us learn and appreciate our commitment. We get it done. Always.
A final word.
I was never the best athlete. Not among my friends, and certainly not at school or among the general population.
I was never picked first, couldn't aim or hit anything regularity.
I wasn't the bravest or most daringist.
I did have one thing going for me...
... I freakin' loved being outside and being challenged by nature.
Today, I'm probably better than almost all my contemporaries.
That's not a flex, it's just happens.
They quit.
Which brings us to the top two hacks of all time...
... commitment and passion.

YOU'VE LOST THAT AWESOME FEELING... GET IT BACK!
THERE'S A CERTAIN SOMETHING we feel during the early days of picking up our passion. It's tangible. We can taste it. We love it...
... that's how we got here.
I'd lost it.
Over the last couple of years, drunk with stupid stats from Training Peaks and Starva...
- more time
- more miles
- more climbing
... I found myself wallowing in fatigue.
Don't get me wrong.
I'd line up, or roll out with the pals, and, though I might be quick to drift back...
... the ability to endure for hours was ridiculous.
Something snapped.
Or, lightning struck.
I dunno.
But, a few weeks ago, I woke up and said...
Screw it!
I'm cutting down the long slogs...
... and bringing back sprint days.
2-3 hours became 90 minutes.
With 10-15 VO2 max efforts,
lasting 10 seconds to 5 minutes.
I'm super fortunate to live close to trails with a lot of straight up and straight down...
... I let the terrain dictate how long the sprint lasts.

Then, focus on my DH skills...
... coasting, staying off the brakes, carving and carrying speed.
The upshot, after 90 minutes and 10+ solid efforts?
I feel amazing,
not pooped.
Sprinting engages all our muscles and focus...
... a total mind, body soul work out.
Soul?
Yeah, trust me.
Do 'em right, and you'll see stars and feel God's presence could be imminent.

CULTURE WARS
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TRAINING groups. Both extend invitations...
... the similarities stop there.
One culture assures...
- everyone is ready to start together
- there are plenty of stops
- nobody gets left behind
... fairness and concern.
The other demands...
- leaving on time
- no stopping
- no waiting
... rugged individuals.
The group we...
- join
- create
- help grow
... depends on the result we are looking for.

DIRT WORLD PROBLEMS
EVERY SURFACE HAS it's challenges. Add in the weather, how we approach things...
... changes quickly.
Super mist.
The normally grippy sidewalk we were slaying to meet the rest of the crew, was not only glazed with moisture...
... bright green moss screamed Slow down and do not lean over.
We ain't rookies,
not a problem.
It was so misty, the glasses were tucked away.

The late Fall moon dust covering most of our trails and roads...
- forks
- shins
- lenses
... quickly 3D prints on to everything.

Bombing the first downhill...
- nearly 40mph
- no brakes
- 1 minute
... the dust and pebbles flying up stinging our eyes.
Two choices:
Wear the glasses,
blurry, smudgy vision.
Wear no protection,
smoke your corneas or contacts.
When the sun finally burned through,
I grabbed my glasses from my jersey pocket...
... they were covered in sweat.
lol
Truly, dirt world challenges.

IT'S TIME.
ALL THE HARD WORK IS ABOUT TO PAY OFF. The van is loaded. The body is rested. It's time to head up to the race. I'm feeling quite fine. Not at all how I felt the last few weeks...
.. which is how I like it.
Yes, I like to pile on the miles and hard work until 10-14 days out. How big of a pile?...
... so big I want to quit riding altogether.
To exhaustion.
Then, I back it way down.
It doesn't work for everybody. But, isn't that what makes racing and epic events so intriguing?...
... figuring out what works for us.
The beauty is there is always a new training concept or product or nutrition to experiment on.

If you like this post, consider leaving a tip.
REALLY, EVERY DAY?
BECAUSE EVERY DAY IS NOT RACEDAY, FOR ME. I hear that phrase nearly every day. At some point, someone will walk in and notice my hat and mid-conversation justify whatever thing they want to slack off on...
... clarifying they aren't racing every day.
Fair enough.
Nobody is.
I mean those cats racing around France are for three weeks. But even they aren't racing every day.
The sprinters scratch and claw over the steep stuff and barely make the cut.
The climbers scamper to the front on a sprint stage only to clear out when it things get feisty.
Some days RaceDay is just doing the bare minimum...
... expending the least amount of energy.
Other days RaceDay means sleeping in and getting a massage...
... recovery is an overlooked superpower.
So, yes, Every Day Is RaceDay.
Don't waste 'em.
They compound.

WHY WE NEED TO CROSS TRAIN
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASONS TO CROSS TRAIN. To get stronger is a great reason. To restore flexibility and range of movement, for sure. To change things up and freshen our minds. But, there's another...
... to awaken the beginner's mind.
I was reminded of that today on my paddle board. Like a rookie, I shoved off in too shallow of water and caught the fin on a rock right as I was mounting the board.
The board stopped.
I did not.
Nor did my nose until it connected squarely with the board...
... and kept gushing for the 45 minutes of paddling.
There were plenty of witnesses.
I could only laugh... what a dork!
Most of us are so committed to this wonderful sport of cycling we suffer all kinds of humiliations and keep going...
• Greasy chain ring tattoo on calf
• Helmet on backwards
• Cut legs shaving
• Bibs on inside out
... it's endless and endlessly entertaining, the things we get so wrong when first starting out.
All I can say is if your cross training do you best to pay attention...
... if you're bringing a friend out for whom cycling will be cross training be prepared to be entertained...
... and offer some first aid, and words of encouragement.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT YELLOW?
DO YOU HAVE A MAGIC JERSEY? A jersey that when you put it on gives you added power, charisma and unquestioned leadership? It doesn't have to be yellow or pink or red...
... just meaning full.
That's exactly the ingredient all the famous Leader jerseys contain.
Meaning.
Context.
History.
The pro who earns one, even for a day,
is reborn.
Untethered to any previous limitations,
they charge forward.
Awakened to new possibilities,
they dream big.
I'm forever fascinated by said metamorphosis.
It's just a jersey.
But, it's not.
We want the same thing for ourselves.
We have a favorite kit we save for the big, important days. Or a new one, we're ready to bust out.
We aren't superstitious, we just know it works.

A COMMUNITY OF GIVERS
OUR LOCAL SCENE IS FILLED WITH GIVERS. Some of the giving is rewarding, some quite the opposite. Take today. What a dandy!...
... with full spectrum of giving.
It's the seventh consecutive year of Chris' Creek to Peak. He gave us a great day with more support than ever.
That kind of giving leads to giving of a different kind.
Giving a beating...
... with 82 miles, 10,000' of vert, all of us finished on empty.
Giving shyte...
... Jorge fruitlessly trying to get in my head as we gave our all up the biggest climb.
Giving poor advice...
... with prizes for 4 different climbs there was plenty of terrible advice being thrown about. (You should go early. Don't drink, it's too hot. You want those tires hard as rocks.)
Giving inspiration...
... as riders who've been destroyed on previous attempts flew up and down the big mountain.
Giving blood...
... nothing terrible, but there will be wounds to clean tonight.
The best part of a giving day like this is giving all a chance to see where their fitness is as we prep for big summer goals like BWR, Tahoe and Leadville.

HOW TO HANDLE STANIMALS AND OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT KILL US
WELL, I'M SURE YOU WILL NEVER DO THIS. Right? About 7 weeks ago, due to a large family event, I caved and ate very unatletically. This choice, which seemed harmless and appropriate at the time, activated my inner sugar devil..
... it's been hell ever since.
Finally, a few days ago, I said to hades with that, I'm an athlete.
With family again in town this week, I prepared for sturdy test of my resolve.
Fortunately, my bro-in-law came to the rescue with this gem when his sister, who at times has an eery control over my selfcontrol, brought home an assortment San Clemente's finest donuts...
... I love 'em, but they might kill me.
That's powerful stuff, right up there with...
... No thanks, I'm an athlete.
I was reminded of all this later in the day when replacing my MTB's rear tire for tomorrow's ridiculous social ride from the ocean to the 5600' summit of Saddleback.
Take a look at that Stanimal up there.
Has to be the largest ever caught.
Creepy, right?
That monster was rolling around inside my wheel waiting to be release and go for my jugular. Luckily our HQ is outfitted with a Stanimal Sensing and Suppression System. The beast was subdued, slayed and disposed of.
Can't wait to rip it up on the new Conti RaceKing.
All set up with new sealant.

DRIFTING THROUGH LIFE
DRIFTING THROUGH A TURN CAN BE HARROWING. Will the tires hook up and send us zooming on our way or will they give in to the pressure sending us flat on our backs or worse? I was thinking those very thoughts last week...
... soon I was on my arse.
Some cat was brave enough to climb up a steep single track 99.9% of people fly down.
I found him mid-turn, middle of the trail, and had no choice but to change trajectory...
... and that was just too much for my little ol' treads.
Such is the life of a drifter.
Risky.
Unsure.
Fraught with danger.
There's no place for fear.
There is only room for faith things will work out, and that's where most riders go wrong...
... faithless, they look straight down instead of far down the trail.
Had I been looking straight down we would have collided, for sure. Instead, a controlled skid put me down gently with only some extra dust to show for it.
Some old dude said it best...
... where there is no vision, the people parish.
Why just today I asked my friend if he was ready for Saturday's big Creek To Peak. He'd been training for the last year to redeem his previous poor showing.
You ready?
Yes.

HOW GENERATION PEACH FUZZ KEPT THE YELLOW JERSEY
GENERATION PEACH FUZZ HAVE TAKEN OVER THE PELOTON AT THE TDF. Tade, 22. Jonas, 25. Mathieu, 26. All killed the TT today. These guys look like babies. And, the way Matieu kept the yellow jersey...
... was pure child's play.
Up until the last two turns it was a dead heat. In fact, I think most thought Tade was going to take over the yellow.
But, go back and watch those final turns.
Matieu railed 'em.
Nobody looked as fast, powerful and confident.
How'd he do it?
He's a great bike handler. Great!
Over and over the commentators will say Oh rider X came up mountain biking, he's a great bike handler. And it's true. Mountain bikers are great bike handlers. I think it's because they play around with things more.
For example, MTBrs will go over and over different ways to enter corners...
lay it over?
heavy on the front end?
lock up the rear and slide in?
lower PSI?
brake through turn or brake before and coast through?
... a million options and the mountain bikers are playing with them all the time.
I'm going off on a tangent here, but...
... MTB riders never point stuff out and consequently don't expect things to be pointed out. They look after themselves.
I guess my point is this...
... if you're not feeling superconfident with your skills play around a little more.
Road or dirt, go find a corner and take it over and over again. Different angles of entry, different braking points, different air pressures, etc.
It's worth it.
You'll be faster and have more fun...
... like a child.

CRYING WITH CAV'
A COUPLE OF WINTERS BACK THE GREAT MARK CAVENDISH WAS ON A LOCAL TRAINING RIDE. Like a fool, I thought surely I could climb with this biggish sprinter who was considered past his prime...
... how wrong I was.
The whole world has been wrong about Cav and there are 2 reasons he took the V today at TdF.
Consider this and you may consider shedding some tears yourself, I certainly did - but I'm a softy.
You see, Cav' had been written off.
Tossed on the heap of discarded human engines deemed no longer worthy to be powering carbon super bikes. Few thought he'd even be riding professionally this year, or ever.
But, things aren't always as they seem.
First, Patrick Lefevere who runs the best sprinting team in the sport, gave him a chance. Patrick believed in Cav'. This wasn't a charity hire or promotional stunt, as many believed...
... If I thought Mark Cavendish was done, I would not have taken him back.
Second, with the faith of Lefevere, the best leadout train in the business cued up and delivered Mark to the point where he could prove he still has what it takes to win.
At one time or another, if we've lived any kind of life going for any kind of greatness, we've all been doubted. Even discarded. We've wanted to crawl in a hole and disappear.
So, yeah, I get those tears Mark...
... To have someone say I believe in you, to earn the respect of a great team, to deliver once again when all said Impossible...
... that, brother, is worthy of a flood of emotion.

BALANCE. NONSENSE.
YOU KNOW BALANCE IS JUST A LOAD OF DOODOO. We don't need more balance. In fact, the more balanced we are the slower we go. That's right...
... out of balance is the key to speed.
Want proof?
Here's my story.
I've been riding my MTB more and more getting ready for the Leadville Stage Race. Every time I ride, I get a little more in tune with that bike. The harder I push, the more I know the bike's limitations.
If I was more in balance, riding other bikes more or crosstraining more or et al ...
... my performance would be worse if I was more in balance.
For example, I've been experimenting a ton with the dropper post and finding when it's steep it's faster to drop the saddle and tuck instead of pedaling whenever possible.. Cornering, even nontechnical terrain, is faster dropped, less of a need to pedal out of the corners because I'm exiting faster.
The is compounded with the much lower tire pressures I've been testing. Significantly increased traction climbing and cornering.
None of this would be learned or incorporated if I was more in balance.
There's a time for balance for sure...
... just not when we're striving for exceptional results.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/all-lights
Some of the sacrifices we make when out of balance is riding during the early and late hours of day.
Always good to run some lights for that.

OUT OF SIGHT, NOT OUT OF TIME - LEADVILLE PREP
WATCHING THE LEAD RIDERS ESCAPE UP THE ROAD WAS PAINFUL. This should not be happening 15 minutes into the first climb. But it was and it was all my fault...
... because I'd done something I'd never intentionally do the day before a huge race.
The result was about 4 hours of sleep, and I was paying for it early.
What I actually did is unimportant. What is important is to remember not to adjust the settings on anything in life the day/week before a big race.
Everything should be on autopilot by that point.
Nothing new.
That said, if you're prepped properly autopilot should still kick in on raceday even if the routine is jumbled...
... which is what eventually happened.
First, I marked the time gap.
As the group wound across the mountain above, I noted how long it took me to get to the last place I saw them. After about 30 minutes, the gap steadied. I was still behind, but I had hope.
Second, I stayed on top of my hydration and nutrition.
It so easy to panic and skip fueling our bodies in an effort to make up time. Instead, I made a concerted effort to stay ahead of any caloric or liquid needs.
Third, I relaxed.
There was nothing to do but stay the course and settling in permitted my mind to stay clear and fresh.
When I finally got to the terrain that suits me best, I was able to make up some lost time and finish closer than I'd ever hoped when that early gap opened 4 hours earlier.
Shizz always gonna happen, and sometimes the night before a big race. So when it does, get it handled and get up and stick to the training plan...
... which is the point of having a plan.

YOU SHOULD RIDE WITH MY FRIEND
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST THINGS I HEAR THESE DAYS IS You should ride with my friend. I also like to watch college football, but nobody is saying You should watch with my friend. You know the difference right?...
... they think we're weird.
Of course, we know I'm much more likely to enjoy watching a game with their friend than I am doing for a ride. You know why right?...
... I'm dedicated to excellence on the bike,
and I'm a casual fan of football.
Tomorrow I'll wake up at 5ish. Drive to meet some of the PEDALposse for what most would consider an insane ride - 50 miles. 7000' of vert, under 5 hours...
... and do it like it's nothing.
It's not weird to be dedicated,
but it sure separates the casual
from those who will stop at nothing.
Those are my kinda friends.

WIND ME OR AGAINST ME
NEAR THE END OF A RIDE ON A DAY NEAR THE END OF THE WEEK, I got the near the feeling of what it might feel like to be a pro. This came after definitely not feeling pro because the wind had been in my face for over an hour...
... I was exhausted.
Now the steady West wind joined me from behind.
It felt good.
Effortless.
I leaned over, resting my forearms on the top of my bars forming a virtual aero bar. My cadence was metronome-like.
25 mph, 110 bpm.
I thought,
This must be how the pros feel all the time, at least it's how they look. Easy, graceful and fast...
... sometimes a change in direction is all we need.

BEGINNING IS EASY, CONTINUING...
IT WAS NEVER MORE EVIDENT THAN THIS EVENING'S HOT LAPS. The rotating cast of speedsters that showed up tonight hit the first lap hard. PR and KOM hard. My advantage of knowing the trail was soon erased. I was reminded of the Japanese proverb...
... beginning is easy, continuing is hard.
None of us finished within a minute of each other. But, we kept charging all four laps. All finished huffing, puffing and blown.
That's hard.
But, we keep charging because some cats will...
get discouraged and ease up,
have a mechanical and quit,
forget to eat and bonk
crash and lose time...
... we know continuing is hard, and that's why we do it because it works.

You know what else works for recovery is this mix from Skratch... but, what I love about is how filling and satiating it is post ride.

FAST TO SEE YOU
IT WAS A FAST MORNING. I left 8 minutes late to get to the start of the ride. The fellas were frisky, catching the B's and their 5 minute head start, within 22 minutes. After all that, we smashed it coming home....
... which reminded me of the great Greg LeMond's statement.
It never gets easy, we just go faster.
Which is mostly true. Not totally true, because when we put in the work...

YOU'RE IN PRETTY DERN GOOD SHAPE ON ANY RIDE AS LONG AS YOU'VE GOT A $20 ON YA. Could be in your wallet, or you saddle bag. That's the problem...

No bueno.
What's the solution?
I'll tell ya, as long as ya promise not to tell another soul.

REMOTE VIEWING
ON A LAZY SUNDAY MORNING I saw giants taking powerful swings at each other. Not out the window, but on a piece of glass I held in my hand. Not within 100 miles, but on another continent. Not actual giants...
... but the best racers in Spain.
I don't know how anybody could possibly be riveted to this like I am...
... without personally having felt debilitating effects of the wind increasing as you get dropped from a winning break.
That's drama.
And pain.
Shame.
We get it because most days we aren't on the sidelines...
... we're in the saddle.
We are doers,
not viewers only.
It's a new week, let's get after it.
Even on the longest day of the year, long after the sun has risen, I'll mount up with my blinkies making me extra visible.
I love the Knogs because the offer 330 degrees of visibility when used in tandem.

THIS TIME IT'S SOCIAL
SOMETIMES YA GOTTA RIDE TWICE. An early one to get it done, and a later one just for fun. Like today. First, a quicky, hitting it hard on the local gravel climbs for 90 min. Then the kids arrived for a visit...
... and gave me a gift money will never buy.
A social ride.
A real one.
Honest.
Here are the signs of an actual social ride vs the usual hooliganistic hijinks of It's just a social ride.
Finally get out the door around 10, after searching through the kit basket to get the new son-in-law something matchymatchy...
... vs the planned roll at 8, don't be late.
Load up mostly borrowed bikes so everyone can ride...
... vs each rider having their own raceready steed with whom they are one.
1/2 mile into the ride the first of many stops for catching up and laughter...
... vs our usual don't get dropped or you'll be alone policy.
After 67 minutes of playing around on the same fun loop with berms and jumps and other fun stuff we hit In-N-Out for burgers, fries and drinks...
... vs 4-5 hours attacking and coughing up lungs and limping home to collapse into a coma.
Being social is always fun on bikes...
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/t-shirts-all/products/ride-your-bike-t-shirt
... because even on the fake ones where we're killing each other there is always time to talk and catch up.
Either on the warm up or cool down.
Many a lifelong friendship has sprouted from such rides.
Kinda makes ya wonder what the world would be like if we all rode alongside each other for a few miles.

HANG ON LOOSE
ONE OF THE HARDEST SKILLS TO TEACH IS HOW TO HOLD THE BARS. Some new riders are gripping like they're on a roller coaster that might launch off the rails at any moment. Others, lazy and loose. One will prematurely tucker ya out...
... the other?... can end very badly.
I once heard it explained as like riding a galloping horse, the reigns are flying and flapping yet they are also tight and firm in one's grasp.
That's a good visual.
If you're on the road it's not quite as obvious until a direct hit with a pothole or something like it. The more dirt gets the equation the more imperative it is to practice good bar gripping.
You know what else helps?

DON'T JUDGE ME
MAYBE THAT'S THE APPEAL OF GRAVEL RIDING? It's just totally wrong in so many ways. It's a road bike that is much slower than a mountain bike on real trails. And, a mountain bike that is pig on smooth dirt and pavement...
... a true jack of all trades and master of none.
The notsoobvious thing about such a bike is that by riding one there is a lot of mastery to be gained.
Riding with the group on a gravel bike with fattish tires will only improve our power.
Likewise letting it rip on fast and loose dirt roads increase our bike handing ability.
Looking to uncover the lost art of picking a clean line over rough terrain there's nothing better than skinny knobbies and zero suspension to sharpen the skills.
So, when the Stravaverse questioned...
... Single track on a gravel bike?
I could only reply...
... Yes. Don't judge me.
As I get closer to the the feared and terrible Crusher in the Tuschar, I'm starting to ride the gravel bike more and more...
... trying to master the jack of all bikes.
https://pedalindustries.com/pages/all-raceday-bags
One thing that will make that trip a lot easier is packing all my gear like a pro with a RaceDay Bag™.
When I see people still using dome duffle bags and rifling through all their shtuff...

The bags are never on sale... we make them right here in CA for racers just like you.

YOU'VE GOT LEGS, USE 'EM.
BP ASKED THIS POIGNANT QUESTION ON LAP 2 OF 4 THIS EVENINGS HOT LAPS. Why are we doing to more laps? TBH, sometimes I think of my extended family who are disabled for various reasons. The assortment of canes and walkers assisting their courageous efforts...
... some have had these challenges since childhood.
My answer to my young padawan? I could have quipped a sassy retort if I wasn't breathing so dern hard. It went like this...
Why are we doing 2 more laps?
Because... we... can.
Upon return I uploaded and entered the Stravaverse and what did I discover to my surprise and delight? A PR on the 4th lap, actually a bigboy #2 cup, which reminded me of the earlier conversation and what I should have said...
Why are we doing 2 more laps?
Because... we... can... get faster!

IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!
IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME, kind of. Youthful energy is percolating on every ride. Cats are pumped to stretch their legs. Weight is down, miles are up, and bikes tuned...

SHINY SHOES SAVE LIVES
WHEREVER YOU STAND, you have to consider this observation by General Schwarzkopf.. Shiny shoes save lives... because shiny shoes are indicative of discipline. But, we don't have drill sergeants nor do most of have coaches. We have something much better...
... Passion.
Nobody is telling us to get up at the crack o'dawn and ride.
Ha!
Usually just the opposite.
They don't get us.
Don't get the magical elixir that is a crisp morning breeze.
Our shoes may be occasionally dusty...
... but our minds are always clear, our lungs strong.
Bring it!
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/bike-parts/products/mandible-bike-cage
Speaking of elixirs and shiny stuff... is there anything worse than having your full water bottle launch out its cage?
Yes, but losing a bottle can be really bad in a race situation.
I've been racing these cages for 8 years.
The same cages, taking them from bike to bike.
Nothing - NOTHING - holds a bottle like the Mandible.
If you're racing the bumpy stuff, this is the only cage to get.. Not because it's crazylight, because it works.

THE COUNTDOWN
WHETHER WE ARE 6 MONTHS OUT OR 6 WEEKS 0R 6 DAYS OR 6 MINUTES AWAY FROM THE START OF OUR BIG RACE MATTERS. Given enough time we can get incredibly fit and ready...
... and that can be a problem.
It's easy to imagine arriving at our ideal weight, with a bike in tip top shape when we have 6 months.
With six weeks, even if things needed some refinement, we can get a lot done.
Six days, we'll be lucky to get the bike perfected if it's not already there.
Six minutes, it's just hope and pray, and that probably will fail...
... if we haven't put in the work.
Steven Covey encouraged us to...
... Begin with the end in mind.
Have you begun?

If you have parts you think you'll need, now is the time to source them. There are still a lot of supply chain issues.

JOURNEYMEN RACERS DOMINATE
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE RACER? Is it today's flavor of the month or is it the cat that's been around forever? The superstar or the journeyman? One is entertaining at the highest level, the other is...
... reliable but not outstanding.
For me, there is a certain romance with the journeyman.
They are not children any more.
They have come to terms with their limitations and continued to hone their craft to what might be the greatest level of all...
... reliability.
Sure, I love the unexpected explosiveness of new face. Of course, I thoroughly enjoy a brutal and dramatic fight for the finish line among the favored titans.
But, in the end, when I gear up to race I'll take reliability over flash ever time...
... and that's what comes to all of us who set out on the quest to be our best.
A few will stand atop the podium for the the rest of us...
... it's about the journey, man.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/nutrition/products/saltstick-fast-chews

IS THAT A BANANA IN YOUR BIBS OR ARE YOU JUST HAPPY TO SEE ME?
FOR SURE, for sure, for sure... the second most awkward thing I had to explain to my friends was shaving my legs. But, the first... the first, quite frankly, I had to explain to myself...

FEAR LESS MIND CONTROL
PADDLING A FEW MILES OFF THE COAST THIS MORNING I THOUGHT I SAW A SHARK. I didn't. But, if the light is reflecting just right the caps of the waves get a little sharkfinny...
... mind control is a serious skill for us.
Think crit racing is dangerous, it will be.
Contemplate the cliff side of a trail, enjoy the fall.
Will that rock you're staring it cause a flat, probably.
The great Napoleon Hill stated, What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve...
... so we focus only on the good stuff, where we want to go...
... the clean lines through the turn,
the solid part of the trail,
the smooth section of gravel,
... because our lives literally depend on it.

LUCKY ENOUGH
WE'D JUST FINISHED HOT LAPS WDNSDY. For most, it is the hardest ride of the week. Roughly an hour. No let up. No draft. Technical. Max HRs are hit with high, high, high average HRs...
... one by one we trickled in after the final lap.
Dusty shins. Sweat pouring. Tongues hanging. Sloppy fist bumps.
A few minutes pass.
Normal breathing is restored.
Slack jaws slowly turn to cat-ate-the-canaray smiles.
It's a truly remarkable experience.
Occasionally, I wonder why all the energy to get rides like this going... and then I get a message like this.
Hot Laps hurt to so good. I love it.
If you don't have a killer, weekly ride, put one on. It's easy, just start on time and keep inviting.
If you do have such a ride, invite a some new cat to join...
... and watch 'em smile afterward.

STOP SETTING STUPID EXPECTATIONS
THIS IS TRUE OF EVERYTHING. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. It's the downfall of newbie racers, the secret power of wizened witches and warlocks in every race. It looks like magic, or alchemy. New racers please stop...
... overestimating what you could do in 1 year,
and underestimating what you can accomplished in 3 years.
When I was a newb, sure I was on my way to France, I was fortunate to meet a crusty old cat who clued me in...
... it takes 3 years to figure out what kind of racer you are.
He was mostly right.
After 3 years it was clear I my sweet spot was crits and circuit races.
But, new forms of racing came around. MTB XC and SuperD, crazy endurance distances, and now we have gravel.
If there's one thing I've learned, it takes 3 years to get really good... and... we can get really good, better than we think, if we'll put in the work AND FOCUS.
We need time to figure out the deets...

YOU'VE GOT DATA
YOUR RIDE IS READY TO VIEW. These six words, they should have been three. Nevertheless, they are a signal to our brains that there is a feast of data waiting to be devoured. Which begs the question...
... should I get out of my sweaty clothes first?
Yes, ya dummy!... but sometimes I'm just too curious to see how my perception of things stacks up with the Stravaverse.
Yesterday was a perfect example of feeling like it wasn't outrageously hard then looking at the data and realizing we were actually clicking right along.
Which begs the Why questions...

- Tire pressure?
- Sleep?

- Food?
- Fluids?
- Weather?
- Faster riders?

How much should we drink? How often? After reading Waterlogged I started drinking according to my thirst vs forcing a certain amount of ounces per hour.
Whatever your strategy, ain't it nice to have new bottles?

JUDGE A MAN BY THE SIZE OF HIS TIRES?
AS SOON AS HE SAID IT HE KNEW HE'D REGRET IT. The thought that goes into tire choice when ripping off road is staggering. Add to it tire pressure, and you'll see limitless combinations on every ride. So, when I asked...
... Those tires look huge, what size are they?
Ugh, 2.somethings. I'm not sure.
He left it hanging there, knowing I wanted an answer as I watched the massive knobbies whiz around. I prodded.
How do they ride?
Look, the size of a man's tires are inversely proportional to his ability to handle his bike.
Oh, that'll make the blog.
Damnit!
Just kidding.
Tires aren't akin to shoes.
They are more like shields for battle, and everybody has their preference.
Some cats like 'em big and heavy and grippy and impervious to whatever the mountain is gonna throw our way.
Others, light with low, fast rolling treads.
I'm in the second camp, and I gotta admit when both tires broke loose in a swopping left hander at over 30mph today I was wondering...
... Are they gonna hook back up?
They did. They nearly always do. But, it's a helluvan unsettling feeling that takes a lot of getting use to.
Getting the pressure right is part art and part science... I'm down to 17 in the front and 18 in the rear. Fastashell, and allkinda grippy for low profile tread.
Speaking of shields...

FOR SURE, I WANT TO WIN.
FOR SURE, I WANT TO WIN.... those are the final words from a Quinn Simmons interview regarding the famously ominous Unbound Gravel race. Balance that with the words of previous winner Colin Strickland...
... Equally important to winning a big gravel race is HOW you win the race.
Quinn is riding with a pro teammate, Colin is adamant that gravel racing is NOT a team sport.
Who's right?
I'm going to go with Colin on this one. But, that's probably because I prefer to race alone anyway. I get what he's saying, that the history of gravel racing is one of individuals battling just as much with themselves over challenging terrain and obscene distances.
Yes... the essence of gravel is Rugged Individualism...
: the practice or advocacy of individualism in social and economic relations emphasizing personal liberty and independence, self-reliance, resourcefulness, self-direction of the individual, and free competition in enterprise.
... I love the romance of that approach, no matter how much it denies the need for society as a whole to work, I just love that freakin' ideal.
Yeah, Colin definitely gets the nod on this one from The Old Diesel.
So much so that I we whipped up this design.

THE ONE INGREDIENT EVERY GREAT RIDE NEEDS
THERE ARE A LOT OF GREAT ROUTES. Every locale has something epic to offer. Whether we are planning to ride nearby or traveling afar, there is one thing we've got to be sure to get right...
... or not bring it at all.
It won't fit in your RaceDay Bag™, but you could check it on a plane.
For me, having the right people along for the ride is much more crucial than where we are riding.
I have nothing to add to that...
... get the people right and the ride is always awesome.
That's a basic truth for any successful operation.

MULLIGAN FLATS
MULLIGAN FLATS, it sounds like a desolate area up in the mountains. Maybe there are scattered pines and dusty roads. A rustic old cabin perhaps? But, no... this is about our version of what golfers refer to as a Mulligan...
... which I'm pretty sure is what a certain rider pulled on our giant MTB jaunt last Saturday.
You may be thinking, But Diesel, golf isn't a sport. Frankly, gawd rest my inlaws souls, I agree. Golf is a wonderful game of pool played on a massive table. A game that 50 year old Phil Mickelson, with debilitating arthritis, just won 2 million bucks playing...
... that would never, ever, ever, ever happen in cycling.
If there's one thing I remember from my ventures on the greens it is a Mulligan is where you hit a terrible shot and yell Mulligan! then take another crack at it.
Back to Saturday.
We're slogging up this hour long climb, it's sunny and hot and our group is spread all over the mountain.
3 of us are off the front...
... when this certain rider says I think I have a slow leak.
Which brings up his Mulligan.
What else would you call it?
One minute he's with us...
... the next he's nowhere in site.
When, eventually, minutes and minutes later, this certain rider shows up I have to quiz...
Wow, that musta been a helluva flat to fix.
Oh, uh, it was fine.
Lost some air then?
No, ummmm, just felt like it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging, just pointing out that we can take Mulligan's all ride long, which this certain rider did...
... only to destroy and humiliate me on the next, shorter climb...
... but, try that in a race and...
... game over.
Speaking of air... we're really digging this digital air checker. I even through it my RaceDay Bag™ in case I have to borrow somebody's pump at an event.
It's compact, and very reliable.

FREEDOM
WINNING A FIGHT OR A COMPETITION FURTHER BOOSTS TESTOSTERONE LEVELS...
Motivation is the one thing underdogs must have more than anybody else...
A few times in your life you arrive at a place where your future has been waiting for you all along.
The preceding are a few quotes from Sebastian Junger's new book, Freedom.
Here are few others:
It's not that they are against excellence... but they know how badly pride and ego can destabilize a group.
Leaders who aren't willing to make sacrifices aren't leaders...
I should have fought until I was the last man left alive.
Whatever you're up to this Memorial Day, I hope you get a nice ride in... maybe even a long one like the setting for this book...
We walked around four hundred miles and most nights we were the only people in the world who knew where we were. There are many definitions of freedom but surely that is one of them.

5 digit days are magic.

COOKING AND CRANKING
NOBODY IS, SHOULD EVER, JUST BE HANGING OUT IN THEIR BIBS. The lifestyle of our sport is unlike our local surf culture. We wear our sport on our glowing faces, which radiate health, because we regularly raise our heart rates...
... that's not the only place our lifestyle beams.
Just look at our legs! They are almost ageless. Muscles rippling and taught, ready to unleash our might fury.
It's not just our skin.
I don't know any proper cyclist who wears anything but cycling socks. Dress socks, boring. Tube socks, terrible.
We have an endless supply of race t-shirts. Some are real keepers, worn well beyond their Use By date.
Leadville does something cool, they give you a track jacket with your name and finishing time printed on it. That jacket serves as a reminder of what I've done, and what I can do...
... and I'll be thinking about it tomorrow as I ride the mountains with the posse members who are doing Leadville this summer.
After, I'll be donning a piece of cycling apparel you may not have in your vast collection of treasures.
https://pedalindustries.com/products/the-apron-for-cooking-and-cranking
Yes... an apron, because I'll be working the backyard BBQ like a boss.
It's the same apron I use when cranking on my bike.

SOMEDAY ISLE RIDE TO KICKINGASSVILLE
MY FRIEND CRAZY MIKE TEXTED ME FROM BUELTON, about 200 miles up the coast. He left yesterday, rode around the mountains up there today and plans to return tomorrow. He rode his bike there, he'll ride it back...
... someday I'll do that.
At least that's what I keep telling myself.
Friend after friend has been riding off and not returning for days, some for months. Each time I learn of it, I pepper them with questions...
How do you do it?
What do you take?
Where do you stay?
... the truth is, these are bullshyte questions.
They represent the kind of thinking that keep me trapped on Someday Isle instead of living in Kickingassville.
Too harsh?
I dunno.
If the sock fits, wear it.
A lot of what I accomplish originates in Kickingassville, but the ride off and return in a few days is definitely on Someday Isle.
Speaking of socks...
... I took this shot because it demonstrates all the effort we've put into making foot protection.

These have been worn many times.
The inside out one is fresh out of the dryer. You can see all the different construction elements that go into FastMax compression.

HAVE I EVER TOLD YOU THAT YOU (DON'T HAVE TO BE) MY HERO?
IT WAS LIKE SCALES FALLING FROM HIS OAKLEY'S. Finally, he could see his heroic pulls on the front of our group rides were great for everybody but him. It only took about 2 years...
... and tomorrow might christen a new era.
I say might because the pull to pull hard and long is intoxicating.
I predict this cat is going to need all 12 steps to ween him off this bad adrenaline drip aka Hey, look at me pulling all the big train.
We're all out there for our daily dose, our racer's high. The only question this cat needs to answer is this...
... Do I want to pull hard early and get dropped or be smart and punish these cats when it counts?
There really isn't a right answer. Both are exhilarating... neither includes any Wheelsuckery.
But, I've experienced this particular cat dropping me on the way to meet the group and making me hurt after the real racing is done and we're headed back home.
Let me just posit, if he uses his power judiciously and truly experiences the real rush of finishing with the lead group he'll never, ever go back to his backward ways.
We'll see manana.
Want to know something funny... the 50 or so who regularly do this ride will be wondering...

One person I'm not writing about is my pal Chuck, who scored a new pair of Fizik MTB shoes.

THERE'S NEVER TOO MUCH TWO
IT'S WEIRD HOW SOMETHING SO WRITTEN ABOUT, TALKED ABOUT AND THOUGHT ABOUT is so easily overlooked, discarded and forgotten. But, it's also good. Good if you're doing it...
... because few do.
It's exactly what I did today. After a hard block Tues-Thurs, I spun yesterday and went out for a long day of Zone 2.
Which meant I passed on the various invitations to go pound it with the posse.
I find it nearly impossible to do a proper zone 2 ride with others. Inevitably, someone - probably me - will squirt ahead and then it all goes to bell on a handlebar.
There are a few things I like to focus on when doing these rides.
- make them event specific, like your next race or ride
- make them long
- make them count
For example, my next big event is a mountain bike race. Obviously, I rode the MTB. Less obvious, I worked on climbing with as low of a heart rate as possible. This forces me to be very efficient on the pedals and keep my upper body as quiet as possible. Inefficiency is readily apparent by a rising h.r..
I probably over did the time today, shoulda kept it under 4 hours. But, perfect weather.
Making them count, means not screwing them up by hitting it hard for even a tiny bit of time. It also means, not coasting it in with a bunch of zone 1.
All the downhill sections should be as smooth and fast as possible.
That's it.
Zone 2.
Eventhough Starva ways Tough Relative Effort, I should feel really good next week...
... and I should also have some new capillaries from the Zone 2 work...
... which is why there's never too much two.

CREEPING ON YOU
I AM A FAN OF BIG GOALS. The more outlandish the better. Part of that is perfecting the art of being a real creep. Not a peeping Tom...
... this takes real detective work.
If you're a nut, and I am, then you want to do as much sleuthing as you can. i.e. creep on your competition.
A lot of races put up their past results. Others go further and put up the start list.
There's gold in that data. Dive in and you'll get and good idea of who your competition is and what they've done in the near and distant past.
One thing I noticed tonight when looking at a particular long range goal I have is that the cats I'm creeping on have 4-digit racing license numbers. Mine, by comparison, is 48675. Current numbers are 6+ digits.
What does that mean?
These cats are gonna be wily, grizzled, and hardashell to beat because they've been licensed racers for decades.
Now to put a face, or bike and helmet, with their name and number so I know who's who when we line up.
The goal I'm working on might take me years to accomplish. But, I'm starting on it this year... and as soon as the date is announced it will be marked in red on my RaceDay Calendar™.
https://pedalindustries.com/collections/raceday-calendars%E2%84%A2

GRASS PODIUM STANDARDS
THERE'S THE PODIUM FOR 1ST, 2ND AND THIRD... then there's the grass podium for fourth and fifth. Where you stand on the grass. I know of one team that prohibits posting grass podium pictures...
... they only focus on the top three finishes.
That's the bar the team have set for themselves, and a high bar it is.
Frankly, I'm totally down with that. It's not grass podium shaming, it's letting it be known to their racers...
... get on top or don't get up at all.
Standards matter.
High standards inspire...
