THE CHALLENGE OF ELECTRONIC LIFE

A FRIEND WHO'D I'D BEEN MISSING messaged me to go for a ride today. I had to go early, needed to be in the command chair to goose a few initiatives...

... we planned a meet up.

Hmmm, 'not like him to be late.

I checked my phone.

My shifters aren't working! I think my battery on the lever is dead. So bummed.

Just like that...

  • no catch up with a friend
  • more riding solo
  • plan changed

... a reminder.

Batteries must be charged, or ...

  • brain gets fuzzy
  • emotions swing
  • reactions slow

... we have a good chance of a poor performance.

Or, worse, we miss a chance to ride with a friend.

Here's my hack...

  • check 'em before putting the bike away
  • check 'em again at night while prepping for the ride
  • check 'em one more time before rolling out of the garage

... and get my buns in bed early.

'Cause I prefer to be a creative thinkin', cool cucumber, with lightning reflexes.

WHAT A NICE BIRTHDAY GIFT

GETTIN' IN A RIDE, run or swim, on our bdays is a mighty fine thing to pull off. A lot of us do something epic to mark every lap around the sun. It might be on the very day, or later in the year...

... but, something gets done.

Surfergirl asked, What are ya gonna do for your birthday?

I dunno.

Gotta do something.

Just wanna go with the wind, do what I want to do.

So, I...

  • Got up and read
  • Re-wrapped the bar tape
  • Grabbed an apple fritter
  • Did some quick customer service
  • Surprise visit with Shane and kids
  • Chatted with a couple of customers, friends... friendstomers?
  • Went for a spin
  • Scanned today's orders
  • Checked in briefly with the team
  • Writing this blog post
  • Going to quit early and see Black Bag

... basically, the same thing I do every day, minus the movie and fritter.

Feelin' darn fortunate completing the 63rd trip 'round,
doin' what I love to do,
every day.

Life has it's headwinds and tailwinds.

Gotta ride 'em all.

Like this one today.

Starva recorded my 2nd fastest time ever...

  • 25.7 mpg
  • 138 bpm
  • 215 w

... on a segment I've covered 762 times.

Wind'll do that,
even with gravel tires.

That's the icing on my cake.

MY LATEST EXCUSE PER OZ

THE WEEKLY GROUP RIDE TODAY, was horrendous. I felt sluggish, the legs barking, struggling to contribute to the pace line, and hit my high points...

... I just wasn't feelin' it.

What could be the reason(s)?

Oz, I sucked today, couldn't get going.

Why?

Didn't get to be early enough.

Nice excuse, you gonna blog about it?

When I got home,
the denial was real.

No way did I want to see the Starva truth.

Had to be horrid.

Between flippin' pancakes,
I took a look.

What the heck?

The numbers were almost the same as last week,
when I felt great.

Turns out, I really only dropped off the pace during the 90 minutes.

Sleep deprivation for sure.

But, guess what else?

I decided to go solids for fuel vs. CarboRocket.

I realized...

  • I drank 75% less fluid
  • consumed 40% fewer calories
  • and, yeah, a full 60 minutes less sleep

... that's how to feel terrible and still kinda get it done.

Take homes...

  • Get to bed early
  • Stick to the liquid diet

... for racing or riding hard (it was a 3.5hr effort today).

NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCED: The Naero

Date line: 4.1.25

PEDALindustries, based in the epicenter of the action sports world, announces a ground shaking product called the NAERO. Developed for the tech-hungriest segment of the market...

... searching to shed every second possible.

These racers...

  • carbon everything
  • rocket science helmets
  • serums to improve every system

... thought they had it all.

Purchasing speed is their guiding principle.

The Naero is on pace to sell out in it's first week of availability.

How does it work?

  1. The racer trims a sheet of Unobtainium
  2. Wraps it round their neck
  3. Heats with blow dryer.

Presto, the masters racer has the neck of an 17-year old...

... no more turkey flaps flapping in the wind.

Early adopters will also receive secret instructions to apply Unobtainium to their...

... elbows and eyelids if necessary.

According to the company...

... 5 watts per flap can be saved.

"This will solve exactly what's been holding me back."
- C. Froome

"Forget motors, give me the Naero."
- F. Cancellara

"Lance, lets crush these punks"
- J. Ulrich

JUST WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE LONG SOLO VICTORIES?

ARE THESE GUYS WINNING THESE BIG RACES, going solo from 10s of kilometers from the finish line, really that much physically better than the rest? When I look at it...

... something isn't right.

I know the best are the best.

But, the rest aren't just hacks off the street.

Think about it.

How can one guy escape off the front and everyone else not form...

... a working, cohesive pace line?

Let him dangle.

Then, pounce for the win.

Instead, these long-range attackers have discovered a hack...

...and it may not end any time soon.

Because it's working.

What is needed

  • hope
  • sacrifice
  • coordinated effort

... is true leadership.

Let's get after it this week!

MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL BE TRAINING LIKE BMX RACERS?

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE RACERS, is the great John Tomac. He came up through BMX, dominated the MTB scene, XC and DH, started crushing the roadies...

... eventually racing in Europe with the Motorola road squad.

How did he do that?

Locally, some of the very best racers I've battled...

  • superior sprinters
  • excellent bike handlers
  • calm as cucumbers slicing and dicing crits

... trace their roots back to BMX.

What do BMXers do...

...  over and over again?

30-40 second all out sprints.

Not,
let's go fast.

Ride it like you stole,
lightning starts.

I thought about that as I cooled down,
close to home.

The ride was fast,
and I'd felt great.

Best I've felt all year.

Confirmed by a few of PRs, on Starva.

I think my Power Spikes sessions...

  • all out
  • 10-20 seconds
  • lots of rest in between

... are starting to pay dividends

Over the course of about 2 hours,
I'll get in 20-30 sprints with
tons of rest in between.

Maybe I was inspired by this outstanding collaboration we are doing with the one and only...

TODAY + TOMORROW + SEA OTTER = BWR?

IN FOUR WEEKS, I'll line up for my first BWR CA. All I know for sure is, the competition will be fierce, the course will be fast...

... and I'll be tested.

Time to do some strategic training.

Today, I took easy, hoping to have good legs for tomorrow.

Tomorrow, Saturday, will be...

  • gravel
  • single track
  • a romp with a fast road group

... a very mixed surface ride.

It won't all be race pace.

Because most gravel rides, at some point, turn into solo efforts where being able to hold a high tempo for hours is a difference maker.

I'll start out at tempo,
on the dirt.

Threshold four about 30 minutes,
on the road.

Back to tempo,
on the dirt.

Between now and BWR CA is Sea Otter, in two weeks.

That will be a good test for my fitness...

... and with a massive amount of luck, I could qualify for Unbound.

Gunna be a fun 4 weeks.

MY LEG DISCREPANCY + FIXING THE BACK PAIN

MAXIMIZING OUR POTENTIAL on a bike, requires a proper bike fit by a pro. My fitter, Ashley, and I have, have been working together for years. We used a variety of methods adapt...

... my slightly shorter right leg.

It's a journey...

  • bikes
  • bodies
  • adapters

... are constantly changing.

For a few years we've been working with various cleat adaptors.

One was too wobbly,
another too restrictive,
I gave up and chucked 'em.

We think this has created a muscle imbalance, and been the major cause of my lower back pain.

It has been so bad lately,
I've been considering giving up gravel and mtb...

... going back to dirt.

Today we mounted up a new adapter, seen in pic above.

It gives the little bit of lift I need,
and has all the stability of a normal cleat.

After we got it all set up,
it felt amazing.

Excited about that.

In the meantime, I borrowed Surfergirl's car last week to go to vision therapy.

The weather was cold,
I cranked up the seat heater.

Guess what?

After an hour of heat on my back, it felt like new.

So, I purchased a heating pad like my dear ol' granny had.

I've also upped my stretching.

And, included farmer's carries, on one side, in my routine.

I'm very hopeful we can get things under control in time for Sea Otter.

HOW AND WHY PUTTING IN THE EXTRA MILES WORKS

IT'S INTERVAL DAY.  I'll be alone for these.  I always am.  No one will see me out there, which is why it's so easy to dawg it, even skip the last few.  Instead...

... I am pushing beyond what my body wants to do.

Uncomfortable.

What happens when we do this?

Because, as the great Dylan Johnson recently posted on his YouTube...

https://youtu.be/x-eUPB9wzYY?si=HEn6r9MP42zawRhR

... these efforts build durability.

Durability, he claims, and I agree, is a key ingredient and possibly the most important metric and indicator for predicting success.

But, nobody sees these durability building efforts,
we get no credit.

Until we're there,
at the finish,
steady...

... strong.

Going the extra miles in our...

  • training
  • careers
  • relationships

... makes all the difference.

===

Today, we completed our 37th year together...

  • Two
  • became 5
  • now we are 11

... miracles can happen going the extra mile.

MAYBE I'M A COMMUNIST?

COULD THE COMMIES HAVE IT RIGHT? On the surface, I'm saying No freakin' way! But, as Socrates put it...

... To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.

Before I admit my fundamental failings,
here's why I'm thinking the commies have a point.

They...

  • teach
  • enforce
  • hoodwink

... this gem.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Let's apply that to one my favorite things to do on a bike...

... get in a steamrolling pace line.

Because there is nothing like feeling of people working together in harmony,, and the resulting speed and power...

... we could never accomplish on our own.

Which means,
the strong might pull a little longer,
while the weak hit the front and quickly slide over.

I'm generally down with that.

What I'm not down with...

  • turn skipping
  • wheel sucking
  • paceline punking

... probably because I seem to get pipped or blown away at the line, as a result of such shenanigans.

Which is why I think I might be a dawgawn pinko myself,
like Uncle Karl,
or worse...

... Lenin.

What would they do if they so much as sensed non-participation?...

... Off with their helmets!,
still on their heads.

Witness my wretched weakness!

I'm holding out hope for my capitalist conscience to win over my evil bolsie bent...

  • coaxing
  • encouraging
  • demonstrating

... after all, it's just a ride, a chance to practice racecraft.

WELL, THIS BROKE MY HEART

I COULD SEE A BLOB about a couple of hundred yards ahead. It was junk half in the street, part on the sidewalk. The cars were all swerving out and driving by, I planned to do the same...

... avoiding any inconvenience.

Only it wasn't trash.

It was a man,
who'd taken a tumble.

He was sprawled in the street, trying to steady himself...

... his wheelchair balancing on the curb.

I stopped,
hustled over,
cars whizzing by.

The motorized wheel chair was quite heavy.

Front wheels on curb, he asked me to push the button.

Rear wheels grabbed perch, and pulled the chair back up on sidewalk.

We got him settled.

I'm Todd.

I'm Bob.

Do you need any water? Want to call anybody?

No, no... thank you for the help.

I got back on my bike...

... pedaling under my own power, on a gorgeous morning.

The tears started to flow, was it...

  • memories of my near life changing injury last year?
  • the countless times I've crashed and bounced up?
  • the sadness for a fellow lover of the morning's limitations?

... so many emotions.

The final, lingering one...

... I've got to do better for those in need, the opportunities are everywhere.

THERE ARE NO TRYOUTS

FOR MOST OF US, there were no tryouts. We rode, we ran, we swam. After prodding from a friend, a flashy flyer at the coffee shop, a seed was planted. One day, we woke up and said...

... Hey, I should try a race.

What have I a got to lose?

Nothing, just...

  • pride
  • confidence
  • social standing

... and everything to gain.

The space between registration and finishing oscillates...

... between daunting and piece of cake.

One moment we've got it all under control,
the next we are freakin' out,
or want to quit.

Before we ever start.

It's not a tryout,
where we hope to get picked...

... it's a figure it out,
and we pick ourselves.

We keep going, pressing on because...

... we are endless fascinated with the idea of how far we can go?

RASCAL SLAUGHTERS THE HITTERS

IT WAS LIKE A TIME MACHINE today. A little knee-high that looked all of fourteen years old slipped off the front and basically just disappeared.  None of the hitters chased...

... they let 'im go.

Maybe they had to?

Meanwhile, I'm hanging on...

... wonderin' what's going on.

The last time a little 120ish lb rascal was playing with us like this...

... he went on to join the pro tour.

Kevin Vermaerke.

Before that, I can only think of Floyd Landis.

There are probably others in between, and before, who've reached the highest levels of the sport, and many who have gone pro.

For sure.

The question is would the kids have...

... thrived without a supporting and challenging community?

FERRARI RIDERS

HEARD A GOOD ONE TODAY. My pal and first cycling coach, Bret, was driving with the great Erik Zabel behind a large group ride, in San Francisco, spread 5 wide across the only lane....

... Zabel had a few thoughts.

Who are these guys?

Oh, this is well-known group ride.

They are Ferrari riders.

Ferrari riders?

Then followed some sort of mangled German, Bret didn't understand...

... yet, got the gist.

What do mean?

You, you have pedal stroke like sewing machine...

... these guys on fancy bikes mash in squares.

Hmmm...

Like weekend Ferrari drivers.

I don't the point was to denigrate the hardware, more of...

... a comment on looking vs acting the part.

Truth is...

  • practice
  • coaching
  • genuine feel

... it takes time and determination to develop a smooth pedal stroke.

Here are a few...

  • rid a fixy
  • one-legged drills
  • high cadence, over 120

... ways to improve pedal stroke.

3 HOT SPOTS YOU GOTTA KNOW ABOUT

FEELING SO COLD, I wondered what I could do.  I thought back to the dawg daze of summer.  I needed more than simply...

... thinking hot thoughts.

It wasn't enough.

Here's the science...

  • face
  • palms
  • foot bottoms

... we have 3 distinct areas.

Keep these covered and warm...

  • gloves
  • toe/foot covers
  • bandana or face mask

... if cold.

Keep 'em shaded and ventilated...

  • a visor
  • ventilated shoes
  • perforated gloves

... if hot.

Colors matter, too.

Which is why we make white gloves.

It's Buy One Pair, Get One Pair right now...

... and yes, we have lots other colors.

HE LENT ME THAT

I'M RELIGIOUS by nature. It shows up in almost everything i do: work, fitness, learning. If I find a practice or ritual the inspires me, keeps me on track, or changes me...

... I'm down for incorporating good stuff.

When my pal showed up on Ash Wednesday with the traditional mark on his forward, I asked him...

... What are you giving up for Lent?

Sugar.

I was impressed, and inspired.

Giving up one of our most addictive drugs ain't easy.

Join me.

Uh, not really my thing.

But, after a few weeks I thought...

... You know what, that's not a bad idea.

So, I gave up sleep.

Not, sleep sleep...

... sleeping in.

Getting up at 530am is easy for me about half the days of the week, the other half I'm more of a 6 or 630 wakeruppper.

Because I follow the great Joe Friel's advice...

... I wake up when i'm done sleeping.

I wanted to do it...

  • for the discipline
  • to get my day started earlier
  • so I could get our and ride when it's sunny and warm

... to make a change for the better.

Waking up naturally at 530am will happen simply by forcing it...

... eventually exhaustion makes early slumber easy.

Viola!

Change made...

... by Easter Morning.

AREN'T YOU COLD?

WEARING FLIPFLOPS ON THE FACTORY FLOOR isn't the smartest idea. Especially, where there is no heat. In winter. Our production manager looked at my feet, looked at me...

... aren't your feet cold?

How could I explain why my feet are impervious to cold?

I mean, who can relate to...

  • 20+ mph
  • skin tight lycra
  • shoes with all kindsa perforations

... what I'd done before the sun rose, temp around 40 degrees?

I could barely feel my fingers,

ARE THOSE GUYS PROS?

YOUNG PUP was up the road a bit.  I was on my mtb, so figured I couldn't catch him. But, I was going about the same speed and...

... cut through the dirt.

How ya feelin' after Saturday?

I'm feelin' it, those guys are so good.

I was smoked afterwards.

Tell me, I've done that ride 5 or 6 times now, and I just can't hang on...

... are those guys pros?

We've all had those thoughts...

  • we think we're in shape
  • they show their in better shape
  • we wonder how it's possible they're so much faster

... when we're new, there's just no way to appreciate what it takes.

Or, took.

Right?

I mean, looking at the other athletes, they don't look that much different.

If at all.

So, what gives?

Here's the fact.

To get good at endurance sports...

  • mentally
  • physically
  • spiritually

... we've got to learn how to endure.

Enduring doesn't mean plowing through the suck, it means...

... appreciating every second, until years have passed.

They're not pro,
they've been riding for 5+ years.

It takes time, to be refined...

... in the refiner's fire.

LIVE BY THE CALENDAR, DIE BY THE CALENDAR

GETTING TO DO THE RACES we want to do is not easy. There is so much that has to align to make it happen...

... so, what's the secret?

The great Marc Andreessen said it best...

If you know what you want, and you go for it with maximum energy and drive and passion, the world will often reconfigure itself around you much more quickly and easily than you would think.

How do we do that?...

  • Get a calendar
  • Fill in the family, work, social commitments
  • Find a race we really want to do with no conflicts

... and make it hap'n cap'n.

WHEN TRAINING BECOMES RISKY

EVER FOUND YOURSELF right behind an absolute beast, only to take a quick glance and realize...

... all the other fools have been left in dust?

Happened to me today,
and it was quite foolish.

It didn't seem so at the time.

I felt great,
our lead kept increasing,
and the great Alfredo was hammerin'.

Then, we caught a light.

All gains...

... poof!

As the group reached escape velocity on the final steep section of the first climb, I thought...

... Uh oh, I'm looking at a lonely next 15-20 miles.

Why did I take that risk, to go with a pro triathlete?

Because it was a training ride.

What was the pay off?

The most taxing ride in months,
I rode much harder, per Training Peaks,
than at BWR and Cactus Cup races.

By a lot.

Which produced a huge fitness bump.

Why didn't I race this hard?

Racing is often very tactical...

  • use our matches prudently
  • let the other guys pull and suffer
  • going just fast enough to hang onto our finish position

... because the goal is often to simply place well.

Doing the minimum...

... is often a winning formula.

Training is like a laboratory...

  • speed
  • effort
  • intensity

... where we find out what is possible.

It's not risky in a race, if we already know...

... we can handle it.

===

Two years ago, I was at the state road race championships.  The previous year, my sole focus was Leadville, where being able to hold high tempo/low threshold for hours is key.

I still had a ton of that type of fitness.

In the two first miles, I popped a little hill.

Not a big effort.

But, for some reason, the group didn't follow.

So, I kept going at Leadville pace, building up nearly a 2 minute lead.

After a full lap, 22ish miles, my pal Andy bridged up, and now we were working together.

Eventually, 3 others made it across.

Neither Andy nor I won, but we managed to get on the podium...

... and enjoy a dream scenario, in a break, with a friend.

DEAR OL' DIESEL, THIS YOUNG BUCK NEEDS HELP

DEAR OL' DEISEL, can ya help a young feller out?  I can't decide if I should race the BWR Waffle or Wafer.

Last year, I was training for the Wafer, training was going really well so at the last second I signed up for the longer, brutal-er Waffle.

The very next day, I got sick.

At the race, I went out too hard, way beyond my threshold, and had to limp the last 65 miles, to just finish.

I made so many rookie mistakes, ugh.

Power was down 100 watts from normal,
heart rate was still high.

I've got young kids, and training time is limited.

In 2028, I turn 40 and plan to take on the Leadville 100 MTB race.

Should I continue to focus on long distance endurance like the Waffle or back it down to the Wafer?

Dear Buck,

I feel for ya, limping home weak and broken is a terrible scenario.

Let's be real.

Having a young family is...

  • sleep deprived nights
  • full-time work to keep 'em clothed and fed
  • teaching correct principles and how life works

... the most beautiful and challenging blessing
any of us will ever enjoy.

That's the prime directive...

  • protect
  • provide
  • love the family.

.. always.

That said, the Ol' Diesel gets it because we raised 3 youngins ourselves.

The yearn to find out how far we can push ourselves physically is real, and always calling.

When the littles were around, I always tried to have one event every year.

Kept me fit...

  • mentally
  • physically
  • spiritually

... to do all the providin' and lovin'.

You already know this...

    ... do the Wafer.

    It fits your needs better.

Remember, doing our best on RaceDay means meeting the...

    • challenges
    • responsibilities
    • time constraints

... while taking care of the best part of our lives.

    Family first, Buck!

PS One day, you'll be an Ol' Diesel, too... all the time in the world, and the satisfaction of knowing we did all we could do.

    YEAR OVER YEAR COMPARO

LATELY, I'M COMPLETELY HUNG UP ON YEAR OVER YEAR COMPARISONS. Focused, might be a better term. It's key that we are...

    ... documenting the important activities.

    I do.
    Always.
    It's automatic.

    What am I looking at...

    • sales
    • fitness
    • activities

    ... on a daily basis?

    Sometimes, throughout the day.

    Here's the dill.

It's easy to get discouraged if we are off,
just look at that chart above and tell me how you'd feel?

At the same time, we can be encouraged,
when the comparo is tantalizingly positive.

Each reaction is dangerous because they typically lead to...

... letting our foot off the gas.

Whether we are leading or getting shelled, we must..

    ... get moving,
    and keep moving,
    towards our long-term goals.

    To win any race...

    ... we've got to start.

    DISCIPLINE IS FOR LOSERS

APPARENTLY, MY SIBLINGS were talking behind my back. To our kids, no less. What good come of that? Did you know your dad...

    ... did this?

    Ugh.

But, turns out it was just a big misunderstanding and it'll blow over.

You see, the discussion centered around my discipline.

    Discipline?!

    I have no discipline...

    • exercising
    • eating clean
    • getting good sleep

... it looks like I do.

    But, I don't.

And, when it comes right down to it...

... I doubt you have much discipline.

We just freakin' love it, right?

    That feeling of being free.

    Moving quickly.

    Soaring.

We're not weird, or exceptionally disciplined...

    ... we're passionate.

A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HR AND POWER TRAINING

HELP!, I'VE MISPLACED my HR strap, and I can't record the data. Can I even train now? What will Starva think? How...

... can I be sure I even trained at all?

Silly thoughts before I rolled out to do...

    • 29 mi
    • 4173 vert
    • under 2 hours

    ... my Hill Fest route.

Normally, I'm all about the HR.
Keeping it in the HR zone.

Today was all about the PWR.
Keeping it in the PWR zone.

    Here's what I found fascinating.

When I'm focused on, say keeping HR in Tempo or Threshold...

    • position
    • cadence
    • breathing

... I don't pay as much attention to my form.

The focus on this ride was keeping my PWR above 250.

When I was making that effort, 250+ watts, I found that when I focus on my position in the saddle, keeping my cadence high...

    • my PWR output is higher
    • my breathing is easier
    • I'm going faster

... there is actually a sweet spot position for me to be in.

    Some Normalized PWR comparisons:

    • Today, 246
    • Saturday's race, 240
    • My normal Tuesday group ride, 229

It would have been nice to have my HR monitor, and go back and see how hard my heart was working.

The main take away for me is, when I'm training alone...

... I'm better off to train with PWR and Cadence only on the screen.

    ===

    Worth experimenting with, IMHO.

    RIDE WITH AI?

THE OPPORTUNITIES TO EMPLOY AI are everywhere. For us, we might try an AI coach. But, how do we know it's good?  Well...

... I tried out AI, with something I know a thing or three about.

I asked AI to write a blog post in the flavor of our blog.

    It was a good effort,
    but here's the problem.

I personally get so much out of writing these posts daily, I shutter to think of letting go the opportunity to slice through what's working and deliver it to us in a creative way.

The personal challenge of the ritual and discipline each evening...

    • fingers
    • keyboard
    • proof reading

... would be a tremendous loss, were I to outsource it.

    It's the same reason we...

    • run
    • ride
    • swim

... IRL vs playing a video game of our chosen sport.

    We live for...

    • the feel pain
    • to take chances
    • and hack our bodies

... because there is not substitute the tests of mortality.

    Just ask Grok.

    I LOVE A GOOD BATTLE

YESTERDAY'S 40-MILE MTB RACE was epic as ever.  When it's one giant loop, 97% singletrack, each age group starts in it's own wave...

... you know there are going to be some good battles.

    Cranks and legs trading blows,
    like swords and shields.

In my race, the winner hit out super hard.

I looked down and saw 450 watts,
    long enough to realize...

... I had to back down, and hope he'd blow.

    He didn't.

Then, third and fourth place rode right by me on the next punchy little climb.

I'd roll up on the downhill,
they'd pull away on the climbs.

This went on for 20ish minutes.

    Starting the steady 7-mile climb,
I want to keep the pace up because, you know, first place was out there, and maybe he'd start to falter.

So, I'm back in second position,
    and fifth place pulls through.

    He's on it.
    I'm hanging on.

    Third and fourth,
    are now fourth and fifth.

    On the following 10-minute downhill,
I slowly ease away from third.

    But, he's there.

    Red helmet,
    blue jersey.

    Haunting,
    hunting.

My hope of catching spurs me forward.

I no longer see my pursuer,
    still don't see the target.

These are always challenging spots in a race.

    It's easy to slow down,
    lose focus.

    That's why I kept pushing,
    wanting to catch,
    not caught.

All the way to the finish line.

    Update on my back.

Yesterday's race was day 3, after Dr. Su's magic.

As she predicted, the back felt even better.

Although the last 10 miles are quite rocky and rough,
    my back felt great.

Even better, when I woke up in my own bed this morning I didn't need to slowly roll over, drop to my knees, and slowly stand.

    I just,
    got up.

    CONSIDERING RETIREMENT

FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ is the town closest to the venue for Cactus Cup.  It is so beautiful in the winter, and full of retirees. I see two types out here...

... those still charging, and those who haven't charged for years.

I get it that age will crumble all of us.

    Still,
    why give up?

    Especially,
if you have all kindsa time.

Are we going to acquire the body of Mr. Potato Head...

... or keep pushing, stretching, reaching as high as we can?

    Every day.

    Here's something to consider.

A large percentage of the racers in the older groups are faster than ever,
because they have the time and money...

... and they have always been active.

    Always.

    Even when...

    • kids
    • work
    • commitments

    ... made it seem impossible.

    They got in the workout...

... some thing is always better than no thing.

Hopefully, we don't flicker out like a candle, and...

... we burn bright and go out like a light.

    THE TT PARADOX

THERE WAS A BRIEF BREAK in the rain. After a 1 hour delay, lucky me got to speedsuit up. The course was wet, slightly muddy, shortened...

    ... we'd be flyin'.

Fortunately, it started to rain again about 10 mins before my start time.

    It was a TT.

    4, 3, 2, 1, GO!

I've never raced a TT, crossed the finish line, and thought...

... I could have gone faster.

I've never seen the results of a TT, after recovering, and not thought...

... I could have gone faster.

    Metaphor for life.

    Amiright?

    ---

    Does that deserve a deconstruction?

    • Warm up was pretty good, 35 minutes with varied efforts
    • Got to start with 2 mins to spare, in other words late.
    • Ditched my jacket.
    • Didn't have my Wahoo on the correct screen, fumbled with it rolling out.
    • I race better with computer in my pocket for these efforts, go on feel, check the data later.
    • The cold, even though I was quite warm, was still discouraging. It was hard to be "up" for it.
    • Tire pressure seemed good, 18 front/20 back.
    • Rode the sides of the trail to stay out of the middle's little stream
    • On the back half I rode the stream, it was faster.
    • There is so much sand and decomposed granite, very little mud.
    • Glasses were fogging on warm up, clear at race pace.
    • Wore my speedsuit, base layer, arm warmers.
    • Felt really good.

    ---

Update on my back, 48hrs after Dr. Su's torture chamber...

    ... better than yesterday.

    I'm honestly stunned.

    Check out this video.

Planning to document daily, through her 7 day promise of all better.

... and, yes, I'd love it if you followed what we're doing over there so you can see us IRL.

    IT'S RAINING, IS THAT GOOD?

NOT LONG AGO, I was humblebragging about what a ninja I was for training in the rain. Because, ya know, it's just going to make me that much more of a...

    ... bada$$ in a race with rain.

    Then, tomorrow's TT happened.

47°, raining, and windy is just a lot more than a ninja like me could hope for.

    A lot more.

Pretty sure warming up will be useless,
    cause who can warm up...

... and stay warm in that, in a skinsuit?!

Good thing my rain riding heroics where on pavement, so...

... I'm extra unprepared for dirt, mud, rock ledges.

Can any good come from this...

... or do I just stay warm and toasty in the van?

    What would you do?

    Be honest.

    Inspire me.

Tell me I suck, and you'd thrive in those conditions...

... c'mon I need a good swift kick in the lycra.

    FIXING BACK PAIN

MY BACK HAS BEEN REALLY BOTHERING ME, for years. The last 8 months or so, I get home from a long ride and I can barely walk.  So, when the Chinese doctor said...

    ... I make you cry.

    I was in.

Because she promised to pull the scar tissue out.

    I show you, you see.

    The price was so high,
I figured it's going to work...

    ... even if it's a placebo.

Today I submitted to the pain...

    • standing on my back
    • poking me with needles
    • cupping out the scar tissue

    ... hurt like hell.

    I didn't cry,
    but I sure cried out.

She found places in my ...

    • butt
    • back
    • spine

    ... I didn't even know I had.

What I do know is, as promised...

... she pulled tissue out of my back.

    Bloody.
    Chunky.

    My back wasn't bleeding.

    Weird stuff,
    for sure.

    Did it work?

    I feel good.

    She said...

    • tomorrow, sore
    • three days, feel better
    • one week, pain all gone

... just in time for Cactus Cup's 40 mile XC race, on Saturday.

Hopefully, the only flaring up will be from...

... my after burners on the short, punchy climbs.

OBVIOUS AND NON-OBVIOUS REASONS TO PRE-RUN A COURSE

IT'S ALWAYS HARD TO BEAT THE LOCALS.  Doesn't matter if it's road, dirt or a mix.  If you're from outta town, and it's you're first time...

... local knowledge is gonna kill ya.

    Not the locals,
    they're nice,
    until not.

    They're going to...

    • enter and exit the corners
    • roll the blind drops
    • ride the surges

    ... faster and better.

    They've mastered the course,
and they will spend considerably less energy,
conserving to stick it to us when we make the slightest error.

So, we pre-ride and do our best to...

    • relax
    • recon
    • remember

    ... to close the gap.

    While I was pre-running Saturday's race course...

    • how much nutrition and liquid to carry
    • should I carry bottles, a pack, both
    • how low to run tire pressure

... thinking of ways to be efficient.

    But there were other considerations.

Will it be windy like today?

If it's cold at the start, vest or no vest?

Will Friday's predicted rain change conditions?

How to figure out who are the locals on the start line?

    WHAT TO CARE ABOUT?

THERE'S ALWAYS A LOT OF PRESSURE to perform.  We put it on ourselves, others put it on us...

    ... high expectations can kill.

    The joy.

I've had a pretty darn successful month...

    • family
    • business
    • and that racing thing

... but the results don't reflect the focus.

How can I share this without sounding like a kook?

    I'll just tell ya.

Yeah, I ripped at the race...

... I was more concerned with how my eyes would function after all the vision therapy, and my how complete my recovery is from pneumonia in January.

Yeah, we had a good month of overall sales...

... I'm focused on how many bags did we sell because bag sales always lead to apparel and all the other products we make.

Yeah, we have a new granddaughter...

... I'm focused on caring for each member of our family, literally praying for inspiration.

    Don't get me wrong here.

It's cool to win the prize.

    Totally.

Weirdly, when I really want _______, and I focus on that vs what needs to happen, things don't seem to workout as I hope.

When I'm focused on the inputs, planting the seeds...

... I know the outputs the harvest is gonna happen.

It's just a matter of time...

... when it does, it's so gratifying.

    ===

I think this is where the "influencers" ask...

    ... What are your inputs?...

    ... hoping for a reply.

    Not looking for that.
I know this will hit home for a lot of us.

    Peace, out.

    THE RUT AND THE ROUTE

RACING ALONG, it's easy to find ourselves in a rut.  Wheels sucked in, rocketing forward, but...

... we're beginning to lose control.

Ruts take us where they want to.

    Routes are different we...

    • know where we want to go,
    • plot the course.
    • get moving.

... the destination is up to us.

    I like road trips.

Getting out of my routines gives me a different perspective.

See the life ruts I'm in.

WHAT I LEARNED AT BWR AZ

DOWNLOADING THE KNOWLEDGE after a race can be super helpful.  We always learn something we didn't foresee, that could...

... help us go faster, have more fun, next time.

    What mapmyride didn't tell me...

    • there would be miles of whoops
    • those whoops would suck the life out of my legs on the return
    • divebombing into the first single track would make or break a race

... I see why it's not called scout my ride.

    Smart things I did...

    • Camelbak was perfect for drinking over the raucous opening terrain
    • Lowish pressure in the tires, 22 front and 26 rear
    • Fastest rolling gravel tires vs mtb tires

    Dumb things I did...

    • Only 32 oz in the Camelbak, 44 (2 bottles worth) woulda been better
    • Letting my mind wander for a split second and washing out in a turn
    • Didn't bring a mini-tool, got lucky and didn't need

    Nice surprises...

    • Best bathrooms of all time at a race - air con, sink, soap, private
    • Water handups on course, came in super handy
    • My pal Kristen caught me and we teamed up

    What worked...

    • road shoes with MTB cleats very comfy
    • Classified hub bailed me out with the super quick shifts
    • the Ergon seatpost over the washboard was Cadillac smooth

    What failed...

    • when I crashed the derailleur hanger bent, and next time I need granny gear it through chain into spokes
    • my arms were so bloody from snagging them on "cats claw" bushes
    • the dang helmet needed a good wash before, I would have avoided eye-searing sweat

... those are pretty much all me failing.

    Next time...

    • run new tires, these were too worn for all the sand
    • drive out Thursday vs Friday and be more relaxed
    • more liquid in Camelbak

Overall, super fun riding and racing.

    The weather was perfect,
    hi 70's.

BWR team and volunteers put on a very classy event.

    I'M HUNGRY, AND IT'S A SIGN

DAYS LIKE THIS and I swear my body has a mind of it's own. Somehow, it knows tomorrow is going to be big.  No matter how much I eat...

    CAN YOU TOLERATE THAT?

GOING FROM RIM BRAKES TO DISC BRAKES was a game changer for me.  Bombing a long, fast descent no longer meant alternating between front and rear...

... simply to save my hand strength, keep the rims cool.

    But, there were costs.

    Not just cash.

    We had...

    • rotors
    • brake pads
    • brake fluid

    ... much tighter tolerances.

We could roll with a slightly bent rim,
not gonna happen with a bent rotor.

We could adjust the brake's cable tension on the fly,
not happening out in the wilderness.

    Tighter tolerances...

    ... bring us increased performance.

    Increased performance...

    ... requires tighter tolerances.

    Example.

After my TBI, my vision was really off.

It was a struggle to go fast over tricky, twisty terrain.

    12 months later,
    I'm still doing vision therapy.

    It's a lot better,
but that is not the point.

    The point is,
if I wasn't pushing my body to perform beyond the trivial tasks of getting by...

... I'd never know how off my vision was.

    Which got me thinking...

... what am else I tolerating that is holding me back?

    WHY I LIKE UNROAD

BWR AZ IS THIS WEEKEND. I'm going. I'm excited. Bike is ready. Friends are texting. AIRbnb is ready for us. The reason for all this anxiousness is simple...

    ... I know what I'm getting into.

The Hell of The North Desert...

    • brutal
    • sun-scortched
    • survival test
    • fever dream

... no one - pros or pretenders - get off easy.

    That's the promise BWR makes.

    I've done UT twice...

... this is my first AZ.

    I'm counting on being...

    • wrecked
    • wasted
    • elated

    ... getting my money's worth.

    I know what you're thinking...

... Now hold on Mr FancyLycra, are you sure you've got the goods to execute?

    No, quite honestly, I'm not.

    But, I'm sure they do.

    It's called...

    • trust
    • confidence
    • dependability

    THE 3 MAJOR FOOD GROUPS

KEEP IT STUPID SIMPLE, that's about as complex as I go when it comes to eating habits.  So, when I was challenged over the weekend, by a caring friend, I had to state...

... my governing rules for eating.

    Here's the latest update.

    Protein.

Shoot for eating 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight.

    Veggies & Fruit

Unlimited veggies, and most of my fruit is berries.

    Carbs & Sugar

Got to keep this in check, not much, except for the big days, then load up, before, during and after the big rides, runs and swims.

    It's been said...

... if we stay on top of the protein goal, the rest is pretty easy to control.

    How'd I do that today?

    shake 22
    kodiak cakes  20 42
    bacon 10 52
    protein burger 30 82
    chicken 60 142
    greek yogurt 17 159

Tallying throughout the day, is a super helpful practice to stay on track.

    Do you have a system?

ANOTHER BENEFIT OF HAVING AN 'A' RACE

ONCE WE GET THE 'A' RACE on the calendar, things become clearer.  We get a sense of when we need to do what we know needs doing, and...

... what we need to cut out for a season, or longer.

    But, there's more.

    It takes a while,
    which is why it's valuable
to put the calendar to use asap.

With time, our brains magically serve us with...

    ... ideas and inspirations.

    New stuff,
    that can help
and make a difference in our prep.

    Moms call it nesting,
    before the baby arrives.

    It's the same thing...

    • date with destiny
    • start prepping
    • get ideas

    ... Rip On RaceDay!

Shout out to Samir who just signed up for his first race, ever, at 52.

    WORKING IN HARMONY

SEEING THE FLOCK OF PELICANS glide overhead, reminded me of the beauty of a peloton.  Riders moving in harmony, rotating through...

    ... sharing the load.

    Making it easy,
    to go fast.

It sparked me to be a bit of a mad scientist today.

How could I improve my drivetrain for the upcoming BWR AZ?

    I cracked open...

    • a new KMC chain
    • stripped with Ceramic Speed UFO cleaner
    • drenched it in a mason jar of WEND Wax-On Dry Lube

... measured it, cut it, mounted it on my bike.

The chain ring and cassette look pretty good still,
a benefit to replacing chains often.

I'll test it in the morning and make sure...

... the entire drivetrain is working in harmony.

ARE YOU CONNECTED, OR MERELY POWERFUL?

THIS IS ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS to transfer more power to the pedals. I only thought of it because my knee started to bug me, and...

... I was pretty sure what I needed to fix.

    An inexpensive part.

    Easy to neglect.

    Often forgotten.

My knee was buggin' because my cleat was worn out.

In my case, it was more than just the cleat...

... I run a Shimano adapter on my road shoes, so I can run MTB pedals on my gravel/road bike.

    Parts replaced.

I went from feeling like i was ice skating on a walnut to...

    • superconnected
    • powerful
    • locked in

... the way we all want to feel when stomping on the pedals.

This, for me, is vastly superior...

    • stiffer sole
    • better breathability
    • better strapping system

... road shoes for the win.

    There is one BIG negative.

If I ever need to dismount and hike up a steep hill,
    there is almost no traction,
    compared to MTB shoe.

Some of my pals run road shoes and pedals, gravel and MTB.

    Big drawback there is,
    contaminate those road cleats,
and you might never get them to reengage.

    Anyway,
we can have all the power in the world...

... gotta be connected to put it to good use.

    Because we are, 2W4L

    ARE YOU INSPIRED?

INSPIRATION CAN BE WONDERFUL, if it's the right kind. The positive stuff gives us hope, something to aspire to. The negative is debilitating, at best. But, I'm

    ... interested in something better.

    Ideas.

Where do we get the ideas to make our racing, training, lives better?

Here are some of my inspirations.

When I was a surfer, we'd go weeks with little to no waves.

A swell hits, and we'd paddle 'till our arms fell off, for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 days in a row.

    What if we ...

... recovered for weeks, then all out, every day, for up to a week?

When I played tennis as a kid, I took lessons every Tuesday.

I was very weak, physically, so we worked on technique to maximize what I was able to do.

    What if we...

... spent one day a week focused solely on technique?

When I raced motorcycles, long distance vision was imperative.

We were going so fast, I had to keep my head up much more than on a bicycle.

    What if we...

... regularly pushed ourselves to go as quickly as possible over tricky terrain?

    I love reading and learning.

It allows me to focus on my inner thoughts and reflect on my outer actions.

    What if we...

... consistently dove into thoughtful literature?

    We're all cooking on something,
the ingredients in our minds matter...

... when we are Two Wheels For Life.

    INTERMITTENT HAMMERING

WE ALL (?) KNOW ABOUT INTERMITTENT FASTING. For those trying to shed pounds or be more lean it can be quite effective.  But, what about...

    ... intermittent hammering?

    Not intervals.

    I hate intervals.

I'm sure some of you love them, which is great, but...

... when was the last time a race went hard for 3 minutes,
    then easy for 3,
    then hard for 3,
    then easy for 3.

    Don't shoot the blogger.

On my MTB ride last night, I thought...

... what if I trained 1 or 2 days a week with intermittent hammering?

So, here's how it went down.

    Zone 2 everywhere,
    for the most part.

The trails here are mainly straight up,
    then straight down.

So, Zone 2 requires some real finessing from a heart rate stand point.

It's easy to get right up the upper limit,
hard to stay out of tempo.

Any time I came to a steep section that 5-30 seconds, sometimes up to a minute...

    ... I put down 500-600+ watts.

    Here's the deal.

Do that for 3 minutes, and the heart rate sky rockets.

Do it for a few seconds, and it barely has time to respond.

Which means, from a heart rate perspective I'm popping out of Zone 2 ever so briefly.

But, from a power perspective it is much higher.

    Check the data:

Ave Pwr 144 vs Max Pwr 844

Ave HR 126 vs Max HR 160 (nowhere near my max)

    28% in Z1 - 64% in Z2 - 9% in Z3 ... I never reached threshold or beyond.

My thinking is that I can...

    • increase my strength
    • keep the legs and brain fresh
    • turn the training into more of practice

... and make all the neuromuscular connections associate with putting down the power.

Based on this trial run last night...

    ... I'll get in 15-20 legit bursts.

Does it have to be done on an MTB?

No, but the payoff of a fun downhill between the mini efforts is pretty sweet.

I'm going to practice this through Sea Otter and see if...

... I can post higher power numbers on the longer tempo/threshold rides.

    That's the idea anyway.

    BREAKLIFTING FOR THE WIN

THE LADY WAS YELLING AT ME, window down. Stopped at a light.  Kept repeating, I kept cupping my ear. Finally, I understood...

    ... Looking good!

    Well, I'll be dawgawned.

Was it all the breaklifting I've been doing?

    This is breaklifting...

    • set a timer
    • work really focused
    • go do a quick set of ____

    ... and I love it.

30 minute sprints works really well for me.

    The breaks are energizing,
    a micro adrenaline rush...

... keeping work fresh and fun.

    My sets rotate between...

    • PullUps
    • PushUps
    • Box Jumps
    • Dead Lifts or Split Squats
    • Toe Raises and Calf Raises
    • Grippers

... takes a whopping 2 minutes to do one set.

Most days I get in 2 rotations.

Is there science to back it up...

    • Phil Mafetone dot com, his book Get Strong! (you have to go to his site)
    • Barry Ross, his book Underground Secrets To Faster Running
    • Pavel Tsatsouline who was just on Andrew Huberman's podcast

... get the source material and take a deeper dive.

    We aren't body builders,
    we don't want useless bulk...

    ... we want strength.

    Keep it simple.
    Keep it consistent.

    Breaklifting for the win.

DON VS. JOE, POGI VS. JONAS

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO WIN A RACE. We've seen them played out in recent, big time battles. While I appreciate each...

... I definitely prefer one over the other.

    Not just to watch,
    but to execute.

    How about you?

    Oh, wait, forgot tell ya...

    • technical precision
    • unpredictable

    ... are the choices.

    One,
has a plan for every single moment.

    The other,
    performs on feel.

You know who I'm talking about, right?

    Don Felder vs Joe Walsh

    errr...

    Tadej vs Jonas

What makes their clashes so mesmerizing...

    • approaches
    • personalties
    • countenances

    ... is their very beings.

I can't imagine one taking the on the other's ways.

    It would be ridiculous,
    ineffective.

If you want to put it to music,
just watch the final guitar solo to Hotel California.

Don is cool and precise and wonderful.

Joe is freakin wild and just feelin' it.

    Precision vs Wild?

    They're both work,
    deliver results.

    Which to deploy,
    depends on who we are,
and who we are up against.

    My default?

Let me ride and race on feel,
    or give me death.

    WHEN I WANNA GIVE UP

WHAT IF I JUST QUIT?  I mean, sometimes it's just so damn hard and confusing, it feels hopeless...

... the challenges just keep coming.

    Why not pull the plug?

    The hills seem like mountains,
    insurmountable ...

... we crest and zoom down the other side.

    The crosswinds grinding our powers,
clawing to stay in the group...

... a bend in the road and we sit in with ease.

    The brutal cold and darkness,
begging us to say in bed...

... roll out into the rising, warming sun.

THAT'S NOT AERO, THIS IS AERO

AERO HAS BEEN A THING for quite a while. With the invention of the wheel, came speed. With speed came wind. With wind came...

    ... drop bars.

    And, we've been working on...

    • positions
    • clothing
    • helmets
    • tubing
    • bars

    ... it ever since.

    We are slipperyer.

    No doubt.

Which got me thinking yesterday as I was slipping off the back of the group...

    • drop the stack height
    • ride closer to wheel in front
    • grabbed my most aero helmet
    • donned the amazing Speedsuit we make

.... could I be more aero?

    Probably.

    Would it have mattered yesterday?

    No.

I came off on a 1-mile power climb that demands 400 watts...

    ... I was 70 shy.

No amount of aero is gonna fix that.

Or, would it make a difference...

    • stay off the front
    • keep in the drops
    • aero helmet
    • Speedsuit

... if arrived at the climb slightly fresher.

To be honest, for me, it's probably more about handling marginal pains, than stressing over...

    ... marginal gains.

    Let's find out next week!

    Nothing to lose, but...

    ... time and effort.

THAT SOUNDS GREAT, BUT, WHAT IF I'M ALLERGIC?

THE MAIN PROBLEM WITH MY ALLERGY, is it keeps me from doing intervals.  So, I have come to rely on the blistering group rides...

... and chasing my much faster friends.

    Which explains today's poor showing.

I didn't realize the problem until I dove into my Training Peaks data.

    There it was.

My last pretty good power numbers were on 12.10.24.

    Took a minute to remember,
what the heck I was doing on that particular day.

    TMWC,
    our Tuesday morning throw down.

I've skipped it for two months.

    And before December...

    ... only hit TMWC sporadically.

My peak fitness for 2024 was back in September,
and TMWC was almost every week for the 4-5 months prior.

Having the data is helpful that way.

If we want to start with the end in mind...

    • having a stellar day on _________.

... we can dig into our previous data.

It's not enough to see what has worked.

    Sometimes, every time?...

    • do intervals we aren't used to
    • hit different group rides
    • add in gym work

...  we hit plateaus and need to mix things up.

Am I really allergic to intervals?

    Of course not.

I just really really hate 'em, and prefer...

    • incessant
    • unpredictable
    • burning surges

... only a sinister group of frenemies can inflict.

    MISS THE ROCK MEANS...

BACK IN THE BEGINNING, before tubeless tires, suspension, carbon hoops, we'd pump our MTB tires up to 55 lbs because...

    ... missing the rocks f'real, f'survival

    Hitting 'em meant certain trouble,
    if not disaster.

YOU DO NOT GET A VOTE

YOU DO NOT GET A VOTE

    Nov 04, 2024 TODD BROWN

I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BLOW UP.  A simple question, asked kindly and thoughtfully at the dinner table, when we were all together on Sunday...

... would I like the answer?

Why did I even ask it?

Will we ever eat together again, as a family?

    It was stupid,
I should have let it go.

But, when your kid's are making decisions for their kids, and their kids' kids...

... you've got to know why they are voting that way.

    What are you voting for...

    • giant orange rolls
    • or
    • green beans and bacon

    ... on Thanksgiving?

Little did I know they are split...

    • carb-free always
    • blow off the diet on holidays

    ... evenly.

It's a toss up over here.

    WHY GETTING DESTROYED IS AWESOME

    WHY GETTING DESTROYED IS AWESOME

    Nov 02, 2024 TODD BROWN

OUR LOCAL FOREST BURNED DOWN last month.  Not all of it, but over 23.000 acres of beautiful mountains.  Along with it, we lost...

... some of our best trails.

Trails that had made many magazine covers.

    They're gone,
    destroyed,
    closed.

Today, I rode up to where the fire had burned.

Branchless sticks replaced our lovely scrub brush and ancient oak and pine trees.

    Everything was charred and naked.

    And, then I saw it.

In the pic above, there is a little tiny green plant pushing through the blackened soil.

    It's so vibrant,
    valiant.

Isn't that a perfect representation of racing, of life?

    We train,
    we enter,
    we battle...

... we resist everything that is fighting against us.

    When we cross the line,
    we collapse.

There is nothing left to give.

We swear will never do such insanity again, and a month later...

... there is a little bit of yearning starting to sprout.

It's not recreation we are after...

    ... it's re-creation.

    And, it's good.

    WE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS

    WE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS

    Nov 01, 2024 TODD BROWN

WHY DO WE BELIEVE SOME THINGS AND NOT OTHERS?  Pretty simple, we've found them to be true through our own experiences.  Sometimes good, sometimes bad...

    ... always teaching us something.

    Every Day Is RaceDay.

    That's a truth.

It doesn't mean we actually pin on a number and throw down every day of our lives...

... it means what we do every day matters.

    Every thing matters.

    Every action.

They all combine and build on each other...

... whether we like it or not.

That's why having a plan is so important.

    The plan could be to...

    • take it easy
    • be lazy
    • rest

    ... but, it's planned.

    Just like...

    • do base miles
    • lift weights
    • intervals

    ... is planned.

    Good Plans = Good Results

    GOING THE DISTANCE

    GOING THE DISTANCE

    Oct 31, 2024 TODD BROWN

YOU KNOW WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO RACE, it's on the calendar.  It is so far into the future, you don't really care about it.  But, you should because...

    ... starting early matters.

Whether the course is the same ever year, or changes every year, getting acquainted with it can make a big difference in success.

    Still, we don't.

    At least, most don't.

And, if we do, we just look at the distance and think...

... Oh, I've gone that far before.

     Or, maybe...

    ... I'll start training tomorrow.

    But, do we?

    No,
    not even.

    The route,
    the passage of time,
and, our ability to overcome obstacles..

... never winds up according to our plans.

    We can either plan early,
    plan well...

... and make minor course corrections along the way.

Or, we can skip the planning,
    wing it...

... and wonder What the heck happened?

    Either way,
we will line up and race...

... how we finish is on us.

    I NEVER GET COLD FEET

    I NEVER GET COLD FEET

    Oct 30, 2024 TODD BROWN

A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO, I quit wearing shoes for anything other than riding, running and hiking.  One of the many benefits is...

... I never get cold feet.

    I mean I do,
but not like I used to.

Back in day of shoes, as soon as the temperature dipped I'd throw on the toe covers or booties.

    Not any more.

So, when my kid called to complain about the cold sand during his sunrise walks...

... I had to shame him.

Suck it up!... it's good for your circulation, getting blood movement down in your feet, and good to connect with the earth, and good to feel some discomfort.  : )

Did I walk our daughter down the aisle in flipflops?

    Yep.

What about a nice dinner with Surfergirl?

    Yep.

On the way to the slopes for a day of skiing?

    For sure.

    Not church?!

    Yep.

Why Todd... why would you do such a thing?

Well, my feet starting hurting in regular shoes.

I probably rode them into the ground,
    and destroyed them.

    Not only am I...

    • quick to ditch the shoes walking into a home
    • infinitely more comfortable every day
    • using my lower leg muscles

... I get to shock everyone else on those cold morning!

Before you say, Bro you live where the weather is great all the time, trust me...

    ... 39 degrees with humidity is very C O L D.

    Never getting cold feet maybe...

... the secret to signing up for hard stuff?

IS IT WHAT'S INSIDE THAT COUNTS?

IS IT WHAT'S INSIDE THAT COUNTS?

    Oct 29, 2024 TODD BROWN

AERO FRAMES ARE SO SEXY.  Just one look, and t's hard to imagine anything but going fast on them.  Unfortunately...

    ... looks aren't everything.

What about the things we can't see?

    Here's a short list...

    • Bearings - wheels, bottom brackets, pulleys, pedals
    • Teeth wear - cassette, chain rings
    • Lubes - chain, pulley
    • Tire pressure

... of things we don't see or notice.

There's all kinds of speed to be gained or lost on those four things.

So while we might be intimated by the fancy aero bike, and aero does matter, there's a whole bunch we can't see or don't notice or neglect that matter.  A lot.

And, what about the bodies of other athletes?

You know the racer who is lean,
    or has great muscle tone?

    That can be intimidating, too.

But, wouldn't it be much more telling to know their...

    • power to weight ratio
    • nutrition strategy
    • VO2 Max
    • readiness

... before we make a judgement?

My pal Pete and I were training a lot years ago.

We were decently fast on bikes.

So, we decided to do a 10k.

What could be so hard about a 6 mile jaunt?

    We figured we'd crush it.

Around mile 4, I was dying.

My body hurt, and I was barely moving.

    Suddenly I'm being passed by...

    • on ol' lady in a Juicy Courtier sweatshirt
    • a chubby dude with rubbing thighs
    • and some cat in flipflops

    ... it was very humbling.

    The point is,
we can be awed by the sexy and shiny stuff, or...

... we can focus on improving what we have.

    ===

As I'm typing this, Surfergirl stops by for a goodnight kiss with a Hagen Daz bar in hand.

    Where did you get that?

    The freezer.

Did you hide it from me?

You told me not to let you be tempted.

    Ugh!

THIS WOULD BE A CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT

    Oct 28, 2024 TODD BROWN

MY DENTIST IS SO ANNOYING.  The dentistry is great, but he's a sadist when I'm in the chair.  One of these days...

... I'm going to get even with him!

He's like your worst training partner.

    You know the type...

    • We're doing all we can to relax
    • keep a grip on our emotions
    • our hearts are pounding
    • our lungs exploding

... and Mr. I'm In Control is talking.

    Talking!

As if it's nothing to be doing 400 watts up a hill.

That's how he is with his diabolical drill in hand...

    • Chatting away,
    • asking about the family,
    • sharing some juicy gossip.

... and all I can do is grunt.

    Well, I'll tell ya,
if I ever get him out on a bike...

... I'm going to yak it up and half-wheel him until he pukes.

That's the kind of friend I am,
and I've been friends with this Dr. Day since we were wee lads.

    FIGHTING DEMONS

    FIGHTING DEMONS

    Oct 27, 2024 TODD BROWN

AT SOME POINT,  the race always gets tough.  Could be a blistering rush for the single track, missing out on a powerful break, dust so thick it chokes and blinds.  In all cases...

    ... there's a demon to be fought.

How do we prepare for that?

As the great Mike Tyson said...

... Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the nose.

First off, our plan needs to go beyond the initial encounter.

    You know...

... getting punched has to be part of our plan.

    It's gonna happen.

And, it's not so much preparing to be hit that matters,
as knowing what it feels like, that it will pass,
that we can and will recover.

As the great Paul Simon lyrics from The Boxer reminds us...

And he carries the remindersOf every glove that laid him downOr cut him till he cried outIn his anger and his shame"I am leaving, I am leaving"But the fighter still remains

    ... we are fighters.

    The great Pat Benatar sang...

Knock me down, it's all in vainI'll get right back on my feet again

... Hit me with your best shot.

5 THINGS I'M WORKING ON THIS OFF SEASON

5 THINGS I'M WORKING ON THIS OFF SEASON

    Oct 26, 2024 TODD BROWN

THE OFF SEASON isn't the... Time to get on the couch season. But, it is a good time to back it off.  The main "it" being...

    ... training volume.

Now it is time to bank things for the coming year.

What can we do with the shorter days,
    the freed up training time,
    the unfocus?

Let me just call myself out right here...

... we can pay extra special attention to anyone who might have been inadvertently backburnerd.

Here are 5 less important things, than the above, that I'm personally working on...

    • getting stronger via weight training
    • improving my flexibility via stretching
    • climbing ability via driving to longer climbs
    • decreasing my weight via cleaning up my diet
    • balance via moves and activities the require greater balance

... while decreasing my overall time commitment.

Other than actually driving to do longer climbs, and I'm talking about climbs of 60+ minutes...

... everything can be done at home.

Weight training, is easy to do first thing in the morning while my brain is waking up.

    Stretching, while watching/learning on YouTube.

Cleaning up my diet, that's just picking better stuff at the grocery store.

Balance moves, for me that's a two-fer because Surfergirl, who apparently likes having me around, like to surf.

It just takes some commitment, and maybe...

... picking up some used weights off of Facebook Marketplace.

And, if we do it, we'll head into 2025 with a much better base than we ended with in 2024.

What are your 5 or 3 or 1 thing(s) to work on this off season?

    DEATH AND RACING

    DEATH AND RACING

    Oct 25, 2024 TODD BROWN

WHAT'S WITH DEATH AND RACING?  My pal Brian is off to run (run! not ride) 100 freakin' miles.  Ironman starts off with a 2 mile swim in the open ocean. For most competitors, Unbound's 200 miles are so outrageous...

... they are thrilled if they can finish.

    Do we really believe...

... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger?

    Why do we say...

    ... I'll rest when I'm dead?

What is the draw to push and push?

For example, 3 days after my surgery...

    • I woke with my right eye almost swollen shut
    • a nagging, persistent headache
    • and a lot of fatigue

... did it keep me from going out for an afternoon spin today?.

    Nope.

Why do we ignore our bodies, doctors, family, friends...

    ... and keep charging?

For me, and I'm guessing you...

    • movement is the default
    • sunshine is the antidote
    • gulping air is euphoric

... this is how we live.

We might rest when we die,
the overwhelming challenge might make us stronger...

.. in truth, a lot of racing is discovering how mighty we really are.

    RACING UGLY (SWEATER)

    RACING UGLY (SWEATER)

    Oct 24, 2024 TODD BROWN

SOMETIMES THE START LINE reminds me of a bunch of peacocks.  Fancy threads, trim bodies, glistening muscles, and beautiful, shiny machinery.  Everyone nervously sizing each other up, and...

    ... none of it matters.

     Don't get me wrong.

    I love looking sharp,
    polishing the bike,
    feeling ready.

But, it's actually pretty fun to show up looking ugly...

    • dirty bike
    • ratty clothing
    • hairy legs and scruffy face

... because some peacocks will be dismissive after a quick glance.

    They'll fail to notice...

    • the drivetrain is pristine
    • the clothes are aero
    • the body is ready

... someone is primed to get after it.

    It's weird,
    and it totally works.

    Not on everybody,
    just some.

    We're wired that way.

To make quick assessments and move on.

    Maybe it's a survival mechanism.

I was thinking about that today as my forehead showed the effects of the trauma endured in surgery this week...

... fluid pooled at my eyebrows making me look like a an old basset hound.

    Uhhh-gleee!

    A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

    A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

    Oct 23, 2024 TODD BROWN

AIN'T NOTHIN' WRONG WITH N+1 when it comes to bikes.  We've all got our eye on something, needed or not.  That's how I wound up with a gravel bike, which I love.  But...

    ... N+1 isn't always the right answer.

After my brain injury, I was having trouble with my eyes tracking correctly.

    It was annoying.

The gravel riding around here is pretty rocky, which was made extra challenging as my brain is healing.

    I'd hit the rough stuff,
    and the eyes would scramble.

Not the best feeling when you're flying downhill.

I had a HUGE breakthrough on Monday, right before my surgery.

My son came over for a quick MTB ride,
I think he thought it could be the last one,
and wanted to get dropped by the old man one more time.

Anyway, we're bombing down this single track that I hit all the time on my gravel bike and...

    • my eyes are steady
    • I have way better control
    • going much faster than on gravel bike

... I realize, the MTB is much better suited to rough and rocky single track.

    Doh!

Now, you might be thinking Of course it is ya dummy!

Which is exactly what I was thinking.

    Here's the thing.

    It's not N+1...

    • I love road
    • gravel
    • mtb

... it's which 1 is right for the terrain.

    And, that's my dirty secret
I like all kinds of terrain
    and challenges.

    CAN YOU OUT RUN ME?

    CAN YOU OUT RUN ME?

    Oct 22, 2024 TODD BROWN

THE FIRST THING THEY DID was check my vitals.  They wanted to know if I was in good enough shape to receive the treatment.  I just wanted to see if...

... if my body was as freaked out as me.

Me:  How are the vitals lookin'?

    Nurse: Are you a runner?

... my thoughts:  apparently not, because I sure didn't outrun this...

Me: I ride my bike some.

Yes, I downplayed it because nobody gets what we do, right?!

But, maybe they should because it feels right nice to see these numbers and know they aren't by accident.

Meaning, heaven forbid, we find ourselves in this situation, it's dang nice to know we are ready to withstand the procedure.

    Next, docs...

    • numbed me
    • knocked me out,
    • screwed a jig into my skull

... to hold my head in place for MRI and surgery

Here is where God winked at me.

The tech operating the MRI looked familiar,
asked me if I knew how she was,
yep, I see her every Sunday.

As I slid into the machine, tears flowed down my face...

    ... I wasn't alone.

Next, I had a 2 hour wait for the gamma knife...

... my chance to crush all pros with a Bruce Bannon experience of my own.

72 minutes later, apparently brain radiation is precise,
I was back on my own two feet.

    Me: How'd it go?

Doc: As expected, now go home and forget about it.

    So, I did,
and will clear the thoughts asap.

    Frustrations...

    • finding the right medical solution takes work
    • the insurance situation is a clown show
    • still had to pay cash

... hours on the phone every day for months.

    Takeaways...

    • live healthy
    • do our check ups
    • follow up on oddities

... had I taken action sooner I could have preserved more of my hearing, and had fewer minor issues

    Miracles...

    • January brain injury discovers growing, non-cancerous tumor before the symptoms get a lot worse
    • getting nowhere on good options, my pal Sten Kramer recommends
    • Dr Duma, who is a leader in this field and just a few miles away

... are happening all the time.

Thank you for all the prayers, support and good vibes and thoughts...

    ... it makes a difference,
    regardless of the outcome.

DON'T JUDGE ME BY MY SKIN COLOR

DON'T JUDGE ME BY MY SKIN COLOR

    Oct 21, 2024 TODD BROWN

I HAD TO FILL OUT SOME MEDICAL FORMS, don't we all?, and I could see the ethnicity question.  I filled it out, and wished we had a better way to identify ourselves...

... one which is more accurate.

There is a story about a people that were fair and delightful.

At first, I thought it was so cringe.

    Racist.

Then, I read a little slower and more thoughtfully.

    They...

    • dealt justly with each other
    • had equal opportunities
    • no class divisions

    ... how cool is that?

Upon reflection, they treated each other fairly and were delightful to be around.

    Unlike most people...

    ... life isn't always fair.

    Shift happens.

Maybe that's how we learn to be fair?

We get cheated at a race,
we understand how important it is to play by the rules.

    A pullup bar broke,
    I suffered a brain injury.

    Not fair.

    Or, was it?

When they scanned my brain, they found a non-malignant tumor.

    Dang!

    Sucks to be me.

But, I guess that's the thing about skin color.  It doesn't mean much...

    ... it's what's inside that counts.

Anyway, we gotta get this thing out.

The main symptom I have is hearing loss in my right ear, which is why lately...

... I'm always trying to ride on your right side : )

The symptoms will get worse with time,
    way worse.

    Here's what fair:

I never in a million years would have made the connection or gone to the doctor to get my brain scanned.

    No way.

I'm a healthy athlete... with my head in the sand on proactive health stuff - aka dumb!

    Here's the plan.

Tomorrow, I'm getting into a giant microwave,
my entire body will be covered in ice so I don't cook...

    ... okay, that's not true.

The doc will use a gamma knife to nuke the hell outta that thing.

Think of a magnifying glass that burns paper, only this baby is radiation burning the lump in my skull...

... ie: tech that is cooler than electric shifting and hydraulic brakes.

Tech that is cooler than electric shifting and hydraulic brakes.

    Apparently, I will feel nothing,
walk on out a few hours later...

... and ride my bike Wednesday (If I want).

    Speaking of feeling,
if ya feel like praying for me and the docs...

    ... I'll take it.

Love ya all, wish us luck!

    GOD MADE ME TO...

    GOD MADE ME TO...

    Oct 20, 2024 TODD BROWN

AS ATHLETES, we almost always feel out of place.  Bad at eating, bad at sleeping, bad at couchpotatoing, bad at being "normal"...

... until we realize we have muscles, tendons, and heart.

    We can chase down anything.

We aren't meant to eat crap,
    shun sleep,
    lay around.

As the great Eric Liddel said...

... God made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure.

Believe in God or not, that adrenaline feeling is...

    • unmistakable
    • addicting
    • powerful

... because that is how we are meant to live.

And, as long as we can,
    we will.

AFTER PASSING, BUT NOT BEING PASSED, by the same guy 3 times, after seeing a competitor cut the course to jump ahead of the rider blocking 7 of us on the single track, after going off course countless times, after realizing it wasn't gonna be my day and heading straight back to the car...

... the promotor waived me by.

He knew I was off course,
was just glad to get me back on course.

At that point, I had a serious conversation with myself.

    Not...

    • if the promotor and officials don't care enough to mark the course properly
    • if course cutting is going to be rampant and tolerated
    • if we should have been on mountain vs gravel bikes

... not any of those things.

What could I have done better?

Oh, trust me, the list is long.

But, the serious part of the conversation revolved around...

    • Am I doing too much?
    • Do I need a break?
    • What is the point?

... this year has already presented me with all kinds of off-the-bike challenges.

Perhaps the rush to get back to normal after the brain injury was too much, too fast.

Maybe it is time for a reset,
    a reevaluation?

In a sense, I'm glad today turned out the way it did because as we roll into the end of the year...

... it is a wonderful time for reflection.

    What we can do better...

... spiritually, socially, mentally, and, yes, physically?

    The timing is perfect.

I've had Tuesday on my RaceDay calendar for months...

... not a race or training,

Yeah, to make the RaceDay Calendar function properly...

... EVERYTHING WE WANT TO GET DONE, must be on there.

    FREE GIANT RACEDAY CALENDAR

    FREE GIANT RACEDAY CALENDAR

    Oct 18, 2024 TODD BROWN

THE LAST FEW WEEKS HAVE BEEN HECTIC.  When that happens, I tend to increase (by a lot) the comfort food.  Which means...

    .. I've put on a few pounds.

    And, I'm happy about that.

    What?

A race nerd happy with a few extra pounds?

What in the heck is the world coming to?

    Welp, consider these facts...

    • it's going to be 39 degrees at the start
    • the prospect for wind is alway high
    • my competitors are bone thin

... and a little insulation is sounding smart.

For a race nerd, I'm already a little heavy...

    ... at least for climbing.

But, this course bills it self as mostly flat.

Am I banking only on my blubber?

    Not even.

Planning to start with the following...

    • a warming base layer
    • bibs with pockets (extra fabric)
    • my skull cap under the helmet
    • pro jersey
    • Fly Vest (talked about yesterday)
    • arm warmers
    • KOM jacket
    • Camelbak

... and it'll all come off in that order.

    The KOM jacket,
    at the start.

    After one lap,
I'll ditch the vest and warmers.

Should be in the 50s by then.

    I'll also swap Camelbaks...

... complete units, not just the bladder.

I'm going with Camelbaks for two reasons...

    • a little extra warmth on my back
    • a good chuck of the course is single track

... plus, there's bound to be sand in the high-desert, and bottles would be that much more tricky to drink from.

    The start is at 7am,
and, it is 110 miles away.

I could go early in the morning,
but, I think it will be more restful to go tonight and sleep in the van.

I'm tell you all that because we have two choices...

    • moan and groan
    • see the advantages

... when we see less than ideal conditions.

Increase our odds of success always happens...

... when we see the good that can happen.

     Which is exactly how...

    • the founders of this country
    • the immigrants legal and illegal
    • the willing and unwilling to come

... made it here, and flourished.

    The saw what was possible,
    took gambles,
    worked hard.

We celebrate that every time we vote.

I'm wearing this jersey a lot this month,
as a reminder to all who see me.

And, I think I'carry that spirit right into the new year.

    Here's the dealio.

When you purchase this Patriot Jersey, we'll include...

    THINGS I'VE BEEN WORKING ON

    THINGS I'VE BEEN WORKING ON

    Oct 17, 2024 TODD BROWN

MOST OF WHAT WE DO OVER HERE stems from my pet peeves.  Things that drive me crazy, or are just flat out missing from the marketplace.  It takes time to develop...

... but, it's totally worth it.

Packing for rides and races used to be a chore...

    ... hence, the RaceDay Bag™.

So, what's next, that we gotta have?

Should I wait 'till 100% ready?

No, because you might have some insight.

    Here's one of 'em.

    The Fly Vest.

    What it does...

    • A hole to access the jersey pockets alleviating need for vest pockets or moving things to jersey when vest is stowed away
    • It's a super lightweight vest which easily fits in a jersey pocket
    • Wind/waterproof fabric keeps you warm

... while being extremely aero and form fitting.

We're in the final stages of prototyping.

    What else is coming?

    Stay tuned...

BROKEN ISN'T THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN

BROKEN ISN'T THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN

    Oct 16, 2024 TODD BROWN

When making a purchase I always go for the best quality available.  I like things that last a long time and are extremely reliable.  Given enough time and wear and tear...

    ... nearly everything breaks.

Here's the truth I've discovered, and it's not just bike parts...

... the replacement is almost always way better.

I was reminded this on a ride recently with a heartbroken friend.  The love of his life...

    ... had left.

Having had my own share of love gone wrong, I could relate.  I could also share the big picture, everyone of those girlfriends was replaced with someone better...

    ... and finally with Surfergirl.

Just this week my bookkeeper let me know she was retiring.  If you're looked for a good one, reasonably priced bookkeeper lately, you know they are hard to find.  I asked my CPA for a referral...

... not only does he offer that now, but at a much better rate than I was paying..

My chief designer moved on 2 years ago, best thing that happened to the business in a long time.  Forced me to rethink the entire process and put what is now, I believe...

... the finest experience in the industry.

Of course, we've all hit a nail, had the tire go flat, and realize there's just no way to proceed without getting...

    ... and brand new bike.

    The real question is...

... should we wait until things break?

HOW WE SET IT UP IS MORE THAN HALF THE BATTLE

HOW WE SET IT UP IS MORE THAN HALF THE BATTLE

    Oct 15, 2024 TODD BROWN

BACK IN THE DAY, literally 20 years ago, I was racing Super-D.  My set up was cutting edge.  From a skinsuit, to a TT helmet, to moto goggles...

... I did everything I could to go fast downhill.

For my first Nationals, the tires of choice were a whopping 2.0.

    How fast?

    Fast enough,
    trust me.

But, that's not the point because I'm rockin' the same width of tires this weekend at...

    ... the state gravel champs.

    What?

    2.0s?

Yes, and check out how wrong the look on my gravel racer...

    ... so wrong, they're right!

    Why are they right?

Because the course this Saturday is gonna be sandy and rocky.

    Why should you care?

Well, the point isn't that we all need to throw big, knobby treads on whatever bike we're riding.

The point is a proper set up...

    • A surgeon has all the tools perfectly laid out
    • A cook first preps all the ingredients and necessary equipment
    • A painter sands the old paint, primes with primer, then applies the new colors

    ... can slay the day.

And, a racer sets up their equipment dependent on the course and its various challenges.

    THERE'S NOT ALWAYS NEXT YEAR

    THERE'S NOT ALWAYS NEXT YEAR

    Oct 14, 2024 TODD BROWN

I'VE SAID IT, and I've heard it.  We all have, at one time or another.  Mostly, the sentiments are genuine, logical, sensible.  We want to do something, but we put it off.  It is, after all, ...

... just a bike ride or race.

    There will be next year.

    That's what these guys said.

RS was hit by a car this year,
he'll be fine, the bike not so much.

    AS, went to Xterra Worlds,
got food poising and couldn't start.

    WH, made it into Kona,
2 months later diagnosed with cancer.

What if it wasn't a bike race, but...

    • A phone call to a dormant friendship
    • A conversation to say sorry
    • A chance to do good

    ... someone who needed us?

Last week, I got an amazing meal at Chipotle.  I can be a kinda high maintenance when I order, so I like to go in person.  But, I was pressed for time and ordered online.

Someone made it with passion and care.

I thought I'd try it again the next day, see if the same lady was making magic for the to go orders...

    ... there she was.

Were you working to go orders yesterday?

    Yes.

    It was great!

She smiled, I grabbed my food and headed out the door.

    Go back and do better.

    Huh?

Go back... get your wallet out.

    Really?

    Really.

Who has cash these days?  Seems I have less and less in my raceday wallet, but the night before I'd been impressed to get some cash when checking out at the grocery store.

    Just a $20.

    Miss?

    Yes.

    Thank you.

I have no idea if she needed the cash, I only knew...

... sometimes there isn't another race or ride or opportunity.

WHAT A HIGH HEART RESTING HEART RATE MIGHT BE TELLING YOU

WHAT A HIGH HEART RESTING HEART RATE MIGHT BE TELLING YOU

    Oct 13, 2024 TODD BROWN

ON THE START LINE, it's not uncommon for me to see a triple digit heart rate.  Nothing is going on, I'm just standing there, and sometimes for up to 20 minutes...

... I like to line up early if it's a mass start race.

Failure to do so, can potentially lead to starting so far back it can be impossible to get to the front...

    ... where the action is.

     But...

    • why is my heart racing?
    • is it a good thing?
    • or, a bad thing?

... it's certainly not my normal.

My normal for just standing around, is in the 50s

    Another example.

Today, I had an opportunity to speak in public.

    A rare occurence.

On a whim, I started Strava when it was my time to present.

    HR = 58

Looking down at my notes, I saw my the rate had jumped.

    HR = 101

I get why my heart rate would increase...

    • on the start line
    • surrounded by competitors
    • adrenalin pumping and priming my body

    ... that makes sense.

    But, why before...

    • speaking in public
    • mostly to friends I know
    • with plenty of time to prepare

    ... that doesn't make sense.

    Does it?

Or, maybe it's a sign that stress is approaching...

... and I'm ready to rip.

    WHERE ARE WE?

    WHERE ARE WE?

    Oct 12, 2024 TODD BROWN

IT'S THE OFF-SEASON for most around here, which means the focus on training is dialed way down.  We still get out and do our thing, but it's different.  I prefer...

... activities where I might get lost.

The beautiful result of that is I find a lot of secret trail and routes.

    Usually, I'm alone.

When someone joins me on one of these adventurous Saturdays, I inevitably hear...

    ... where are we?

Mind you, we are riding from our homes.

It's not like we drove some place new.

    It happened today.

Granted the fog was nuts along the coast.

    Still when we shot offroad,
    up a stout little hill,
    hit a single track...

... then, descended into a neighhborhood.

I knew he was completely turned around.

Did I tell him where we were?

    Of course, not.

    Where's the fun in that?

The fun is not so much in getting lost, as in...

... finding out way back to where we know we should be.

IF LOWERING THE PRESSURE IS FASTER, THEN...

IF LOWERING THE PRESSURE IS FASTER, THEN...

    Oct 11, 2024 TODD BROWN

NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF TERRAIN we're riding on, the current thinking and trend is that wider is faster.  I fought that for a long time.  Then, they added...

... lower pressure is even faster.

    Oh, jeeeeezzzzz!

It's just so dang hard to go with the counterintuitive...

    • Skinny seems more aero and is lighter, therefore, faster.
    • Low pressure seems like its going to have the same effect as velcro, therefore, slower.

... which is why it is so easy to resist the counterintuitive.

    But, truth is truth...

... and wider, with low pressure is definitely quicker.

    The more challenging the terrain,
the bigger the gains in speed and comfort with lower pressure.

Which come to think of it,
    isn't really all that counterintuitive.

We experience this all the time.

    The rougher life gets,
the more it wants to get us off track...

... the more we need to lower the pressue.

    Keep our cool,
    swiftly get back on track.

Just like the darn tires are doin'.

THE BENEFITS OF BACK TO BACK HARD DAYS

THE BENEFITS OF BACK TO BACK HARD DAYS

    Oct 10, 2024 TODD BROWN

YESTERDAY WAS ROUGH.  We resurrected one of the toughest rides we ever do.  It's called Hot Laps because we set up a 15-20 minute loop...

... then chase each other all out for an hour.

    Not easy.

Because the site lines are pretty good...

... there's always someone to chase, or be chased by.

The reason this is so insidious is it's always after a challenging ride the day before.

So, back to back hard days.

    Crazy?

    Stupid?

Maybe, but check out this confirmation bias.

The Fast Talk podcast just released an episode detailing how the small country of Norway is so relatively...

    ... dominant at endurance events.

If you follow track, and I do, then you know Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been blasting the record books...

    ... and wondering how?

One of his methods involves back to back hard training.

He does the two sessions on the same day.

The rest of his 100+ miles of running per week are done in Zone 1 and 2.

This allows him to be fresh and go really deep on the hard day(s), while still building all kinds of aerobic capacity the rest of the week.

    Will it work for you?

    I don't know.

It has, however, worked for me.

    Quite successfully.

Am I really going to completely resurrect the training now,
at the end of the season,
    in the off season?

    No.

    Not all in.

But, since a few of are willing to commit to the concept,
we're going to keep the structure in place for next year.

    IS TADEJ READING THE BLOG?

    IS TADEJ READING THE BLOG?

    Oct 09, 2024 TODD BROWN

Sometimes I think Tadej Podacar, the current greatest cyclist in the world, reads this blog. For example, I just listened to the podcast he was on with Peter Attia and there was a shocking revelation...

... Tadej lifts weights all year long!

Just like I've been preachin' for years.

    Anyway, lately I've been slacking.

I started doing the strength stuff throughout the day instead of...

... hitting it every morning, first thing.

When I made the shift, it went pretty well for a few weeks.

Work for an hour, take a break and...

    ... do a rotaion.

But, lately I've noticed my overall effort and commitment has been slipping.

    A lot.

    That stopped today.

Here is my massive list of rules...

    • lift (almost) every day
    • keep it simple
    • low reps

    ... anybody can do that.

    My main three moves are...

    • PullUps
    • PushUps
    • Squats

    ... in that order.

I rotate through those 3, and sometimes a few others, then do it again.

    Takes 20 minutes, max.

The key is to schedule it,
    then do it.

    Like Tadej.

    HEART TO HEART TALK

    HEART TO HEART TALK

    Oct 08, 2024 TODD BROWN

MY PAL ASKED HOW THE RIDE WAS this morning.  He'd missed, again.  I had to be truthful...

    ... it was barely ok.

    Why?

Well, it's just not the ride it used to be.

    How so?

Remember a few years back, we were smashing it.  Finishing the 22 mile, hilly loop in just over an hour.  Now, it's at least 5-7 minutes slower.

    Hmmm...

Yeah, and we don't come anywhere close to our old times up The Wall, either.

What are you going to do about it?

And, this is where the truth came in.

Fact is, I'm just as much to blame as anybody...

    • taking weak pulls
    • sitting a little too long on wheels
    • chasing any attacks, but not counter-attacking

... and he let me know that's shameful.

Remember, how I used to attack and kill myself?

    Yeah.

And it would rarely work, almost always leaving me too smoked to sprint for the finish?

    Yeah.

    Why aren't you doing that?

Ouch, that one hurt.  I wasn't going for it, because I was being lame.

Saving the energy for some ego-stroking finish vs...

... using the ride to push myself regardless of the outcome.

    Kudos to all those who...

    • have been attacking
    • doing the strong pulls
    • counter-attacking for the win

... you know who you are.

And, I know you are awesome.

    COMMITMENT

    COMMITMENT

    Oct 07, 2024 TODD BROWN

EVERY ONE HAS A DIFFERENT WAY of expressing their level of commitment.   That's cool, but it might be...

... useful to get real about it.

Especially, since many of are entering the off-season.

    I'll make it easy.

If I'm committed to my spouse,
    would I have a mistress?

If I'm committed to my health,
would I balloon up for a few months?

If I'm committed to my business/employer,
do I have a side hustle?

In other words, if things are changing from season to season...

    • food
    • sleep
    • training
    • weights

    ... is our commitment consistent?

    Are we committed?

    There's nothing wrong with...

    • not being committed
    • flirting with commitment
    • pretending to be committed

... it's just a heckuva a lot harder to be our best if we're half-hearted about it

    That's why we don't quit...

    ... we commit!

    CLARITY AND BREVITY

    CLARITY AND BREVITY

    Oct 06, 2024 TODD BROWN

WE CAN MOVE SO MUCH QUICKER and be so much more effective when things are clear and concise. I can't think of a single instance where...

... our results could be so much better.

This was on my mind as I set up yet another Page view on my Wahoo.

What would be the minimal about of useful information for training?

    I narrowed it down to...

    • heart rate
    • watts
    • rpm's

... which I like then the terrain is rowdy.

    On a smooth road...

    • heart rate
    • watts
    • speed

    ... seems more relevant.

    Why these two different views?

    Well.

    Simple, really.

When it's rowdy with dirt, rocks, up, down, tight turns...

... aerodynamics are much less relevant.

Keeping an eye on heart rate, and staying within a target range, seems more useful to me.

However, when it's smooth and straight and fast...

... speed changes are easy to see as we adjust our body position.

On the road, I'm more interested in figuring out how to maintain a certain speed while keeping the heart rate in check and the watts required down.

In both instances, it's all about efficiency.

Which is why I was so perplexed at the promoter's sloppy (lazy?) work for an event I'm planning on...

    • Distance we are covering literally just doubled on the website
    • Course map, almost impossible to locate
    • Promotion, weak, at best

.... somethings are just doomed to fail.

    But, not us.

We wade through the nonsense and...

... focus only on what makes sense.

    THINGS I WON'T LIE ABOUT

    THINGS I WON'T LIE ABOUT

    Oct 05, 2024 TODD BROWN

THERE ARE LOTS OF REASONS to hide the truth.  Secrets we have learned or want to protect regarding...

... how to rip on raceday.

At least, that's how some people play it.

Then, there's just the brutal truth nobody wants to hear.

I was thinking about that today as I watched one dude completely lose control of his emotions because another was late.

    I had to ride away.

The level of seething vulgarity was astonishing.

We're talking about a MAMIL. (middle-aged man in lycra)

    Not a good look.

What does that have to do with secrets?

    I dunno.

    I do know.

There are reasons to good get super upset...

... when we make bad decisions.

    My top 5 bad decisions...

         5.  Irregular sleep patterns
         4.  Obeying the sugar addiction
         3.  Not knowing basic mechanics
         2.  Drugs and alcohol
         1.  Putting sport before what's important

    My top 5 good decisions...

         5.  Treating my body as a temple
         4.  Demonstrating self-mastery
         3.  Pursuing excellence
         2.  Daily Strength Work
         1.  Putting what matters most first

     In case you're wonderin',
this is a general list, not my personal battles...

    ... that's a secret.

What's not a secret is this...

Hundreds of collegiate athletes have been devastated throughout the South East Region - campuses destroyed, classes paused, competitions cancelled.

    THE NEW GUY SURVIVES

    THE NEW GUY SURVIVES

    Oct 04, 2024 TODD BROWN

IT'S ALWAYS RISKY INVITING the new guy.  Dude expresses interest, I say join us on our easy day.  He commits...

... shows up in a t-shirt, sneakers, helmet unbuckled.

Yeah, I'm that much of a snob to question those choices.

    Instantly, I thought...

... We should skip the steep, rutted single track for his first gravel ride with us.

    No,
    no,
    no...

... he was having none of it.

Well, Hot Dang! if he didn't shred it like it was nothin'.

Serves me right for judging gym shorts by their... fabric?

And, that's not even the best news.

We've upped our numbers on this new ride, dubbed Dusty Shins, by a whopping 50%!

    From 2 to 3.

    You might be asking yourself...

... Why would The Ol' Diesel try and start a new group gravel ride?

    Well, I have a theory...

    • There's a whole bunch of cool cats in the world that I'll never get to know unless I get 'em bike ride.
    • Most of us are workin' too hard, and playin' too little
    • And, could use a little extra socializin'

    ... and a question.

Who ya gonna invite to join you on your superdupereasypeasy ride?

CONSIDERING A QUIVER KILLER? HERE'S A PRO TIP

CONSIDERING A QUIVER KILLER? HERE'S A PRO TIP

    Oct 03, 2024 TODD BROWN

THREE MONTHS IN TO COMMITTING to project Quiver Killer, and I can tell you whether or not it's working.  The idea being are there benefits to rolling...

... one bike to rule them all.

I sold the amazing BMC Team Machine, as soon as the Crux was built up and I had two wheel sets.

    One for road,
    one for gravel.

The goal was to optimize for gravel racing by riding only one bike.

It's safe to say the 3rd at Gravel Nationals was a good confirmation of the plan.

But, the big question still remained...

... Isn't a pain swapping wheels and aligning brakes all the time.

To which I can say, Yes it was a pain...

    ... in the beginning.

I'd already purchased the same hubs and rotors for each wheels set.

    Surprisingly, that wasn't enough.

Adjustments to the calipers were annoying necessary.

It took a while to realize this pro tip...

    • Leave the calipers alone.
    • Keep fine tuning the trueness of the rotors
    • Until they slot right in and spin without rubbing

    ... it's a thing of beauty.

    YOU'RE NOT ON TUBELESS?

    YOU'RE NOT ON TUBELESS?

    Oct 01, 2024 TODD BROWN

LOOKING OVER THE SHOULDER OF He With Big Tribe, I felt a little bit of pity.  Not just me, but three other concerned riders rolled to the man fixing a flat and asked...

    ... You're not on tubeless?

Not that there's anything wrong with tubes.

But, tubeless has been a game changer for me...

    • lower tire pressure
    • faster rolling
    • self-sealing

... because it's so much more durable.

For example, yesterday I must have picked up a small sliver or something.  When I checked my tires last night, the rear was quite low.

For whatever reason, the sealant didn't close the hole completely...

    • I checked the tire
    • found the spot
    • stuck in a dart

... took less than a minute to do.

Woke up this morning and the tire pressure was perfect.

I'll probably ride that tire for another 1000 miles, or more.

    My poor friend, had to...

    • take off his wheel
    • remove the inner tube
    • check the inside of the tire
    • insert a new tube perfectly

... unfortunately, it didn't go well.

Then, and this is not uncommon, It burst upon airing up.

Probably still had a thorn in there, or he didn't put a patch on the inside of the tire, or perhaps a fold in the tube.

Whatever it was, the fact remains, he had to do the entire procedure all over again.

Most new bikes, wheels and tires, are tubeless ready.

Tubeless is so much easier, and efficient.

    Why don't do it?

There is a cost to convert, a legit reason to wait for a necessary bike/wheel upgrade.

But, I think it's something else.

    This was true for me.

    It seemed like magic,
    and that was scary.

I was unsure I'd be able to master the new technology.

I let my fears hold me back instead of...

... moving forward with a better solution.

Here's how to do it: https://youtu.be/rTCgv6MzYzI?si=qvBwuJdMqzPb_WX4

    THE HOLY GRAIL

    THE HOLY GRAIL

    Sep 30, 2024 TODD BROWN

TRAINING IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM RACING.  When something goes wrong in training, sure we hustle to get things back on track, but we're not killing ourselves.  We're making sure...

    ... it's done right.

    If we could just remember...

    • a flat
    • broken chain
    • loose bolts
    • bald tire
    • empty bottle
    • outta nutrition
    • drained battery
    • worn pads

    ... won't kill us, and...

    • perfect equipment
    • proper nutrition
    • enough liquid
    • charged batteries
    • clean lines
    • great coaching
    • sideline support
    • ideal weather

    ... won't make us win.

It's the cumulative effect of bad things and good things stacking up...

... that make all the difference.

So, when it's all going sideways,
    we take a breather,
    regroup.

When it can't get any better,
    we pause for moment,
    with gratitude.

    Whatever the sitch...

... we keep on charging towards our holy grail

    WILLING TO GAMBLE?

    WILLING TO GAMBLE?

    Sep 29, 2024 TODD BROWN

GAMBLING IS A VICE, everybody knows that.  It can be addictive, life destroying, all consuming.  Yet, there is every reason to believe...

    ... gambling is good.

    What?!

    Yep.

Because, when you think about it, that's exactly what we are doing...

    • when we train for a race
    • invest in equipment
    • hire a coach

... we are betting on ourselves.

    To win.
    To do our best.
    To shock the world.

Which is exactly what Tadej did today.

    Rolled the dice,
    on a ridiculously long-range attack,
against the very best riders in the world.

    Stupid?
    Arrogant?
    Audacious?

    That's what it takes.

    CARROT STICKS

    CARROT STICKS

    Sep 28, 2024 TODD BROWN

IT HAD BEEN ABOUT 10 MILES since I'd last seen the crew. Apparently, they even stopped to wait for me at some point.  I was too far back to catch.  My friends are so kind...

... when they are not stomping on the pedals.

Swami's Long is, by far, my favorite loop,
with a few of the local hitters,
    and National Champs...

    ... I couldn't resist.

It was a real carrot and stick ride.

I'd start coming off the back,
and claw my way back on.

When the elastic was about to snap,
I'd put in the last ditch effort.

The carrot of a solid draft is tasty.

Eventually, on W. Lilac, which is like a Disneyland ride with twists and turns and ups and downs...

... the stick of being dropped clobbered me.

It wasn't enough to prod me back to the group.

There was no more pace in my legs to pick up.

    Am I happy about that,
    being dropped?

    100%.

    It's a gorgeous ride.

Am I happy about today's numbers, which well off what I was doing a few years ago?

Well, yeah, I think I am.

Today's effort was almost a mirror image of Gravel Nationals a few weeks ago.

    One big difference.

I was very tapered for that big A race in Nebraska,
and mostly tired this morning from a pretty big week.

    What's it mean?

I think it means I'm track for the last race of the year.

    Gravel State Champs.

    ===

Just a side note... yesterday I was having a bit of a Woe is me moment.  Battling with doctors and insurance and all that goes along with that.  I was tired, and kinda bummed.

    Feeling a little defeated.

When I went to bed, I thought The hell with it I'll just ride by myself in the morning wallow in my sorrow.  Not a great place to be mentally or spiritually or socially.

When I woke up, after a solid sleep, it was early.

    I had new thought...

... Screw this, I'm gonna ride with my friends.

    Ain't nothing like some zzzzzzs
    and friends,
    and watts...

... to get the ol' soul back on track.

    Am I right?!

    UNDER THE COMMUNAL TENT

    UNDER THE COMMUNAL TENT

    Sep 27, 2024 TODD BROWN

I'M NOT MUCH OF A TRUE CAMPER, but, I do love tents.  Especially, at the races.  There's not much better than...

    ... gathering at the tent.

    Pre-race.
    Post race.

    On bikes.
    Off bikes

    Don't matter.

It's like an outdoor locker room, oddly private...

... with all kinds of energy.

Michael and I were talking about it this week, how the kids...

    • Jr High
    • High School
    • College and Universities

... are so good at brining everybody in.

That's often where they best bond with each other,
feel the confidence of the seasoned kids,
    buoy up the newcomers.

Sometimes, that's the best part of going to an event.

WHY I SIGNED UP, WHEN NOBODY ELSE IS GOING?

WHY I SIGNED UP, WHEN NOBODY ELSE IS GOING?

    Sep 26, 2024 TODD BROWN

WELL, I PULLED THE TRIGGER on a race that only a handful of people have committed to.  It's not cheap.  It's not close.  And, No, I didn't do it...

    ... because I'll probably win.

I mean Who wants to be the State Gravel Champion of nobody?

    Not me.

    I punched in my info,
    finger-approved the CC charge,
because I want this to be a huge success...

    • the course looks cool
    • they're feeding us something delish
    • we get a chance to earn the State Champ sleeves

... gotta get that momentum going.

    That's how events get huge,
and eventually start selling out the first day Reg opens.

Bike Reg has two cool data fields...

    • Who's Registered - lets you see the competitors in your category
    • Race Predictor - gives an idea on how we'll do

    ... I love that..

If we see a good chunk of humanity is signed up, it's exciting.

Whether Race Predictor thinks wer're gonna get clobbered or should crush it, there's always some way to find motivation there.

The moral of the story is...

... if you see a race you want to succeed, do something about it.

Oh, and if you're in the SoCalSoNev USACycling District...

... get signed up before it sells out!

    GIGO - YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

    GIGO - YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

    Sep 25, 2024 TODD BROWN

NEARLY 70 YEARS AGO, at the dawn of the software programming age, Army specialists William D. Mellin explained that computers cannot think for themselves...

... sloppily programmed inputs inevitably lead to incorrect outputs.

What does that have to do with my Wahoo?

    Nothing,
    and everything.

But, before we get there the default phrase is...

    ... garbage in, garbage out.

    Simplified: GIGO

As athletes, what kind of garbage should we avoid?

    • processed food
    • most breads
    • refined sugar
    • packaged food
    • recreational drugs
    • inadequate sleep
    • massive amounts of caffeine
    • refined sugar
    • alcohol
    • going hard every single workout
    • smoking
    • sitting for extended periods
    • mindless scrolling
    • porn
    • refined sugar
    • seed oils (I'm not super read up on this one)

    What should go in?

    Keep it simple.

Eat food who's ingredients you can identify...

    • eggs
    • vegetables
    • fruits
    • meats
    • nuts

... just by looking at the plate, you know what you're eating.

Get plenty of sleep, and rest. If in question, get more than you think you need...

... simply by going to bed earlier.

Drink plenty of good water, you know so your pee doesn't look like gold the way it does after a super long ride or run or swim.

    Vitamins, supplements, etc...

... work with a functional health doctor, start with a blood test.

In a nutshell, when avoiding GIGO...

    ... remember to K.I.S.S.

Speaking of keeping it super simple...

... I came into a leaf covered turn a little hot today.

this is exactly why I developed a lightweight, breathable glove that can be worn all year long.

Right now, it's buy one pair, get the second pair free.

    PEACEMAKING

    PEACEMAKING

    Sep 24, 2024 TODD BROWN

I'VE BEEN INVITED TO SPEAK on the subject of peacemaking.  Weird, I know.  For someone who manufactures angst on the start line...

... this is going to be a challenge.

For years, I've known generating a little pissedoffness...

... can sharpen the senses, and increase the wattage.

So, I'd come up with some fake backstory on some unsuspecting competitor.

    They'd never know.

    It's an immature idea, but...

    ... I know it's origin.

Early on, as I got into racing...

... I really got into crit racing.

Trust me, there's nothing like the adrenaline spikes from..

    • banging elbows
    • getting cut off in a turn
    • being swarmed in the final meters

    ... it's a most powerful drug.

Because, we don't just feel threatened...

    we're dodging bullets.

So, Joe Racer shows up at the next race and it's real easy...

... to harness that negative energy.

    Eventually, I got over it.

    It was simple, really.

I gave most people the benefit of the doubt, and stayed clear of the turds.

Which is why I almost always find myself making up some kooky gossip on...

    • a fellow competitor
    • doing their best
    • to be safe

... it works, so I do it.

And, to be honest, most of the time it's the racer I'm lined up next to, smiling and introducing myself.

    Doltish, I know.

    But, here's the thing

    • sometimes the danger is f'reals
    • we have every right to be ticked off
    • especially if the actions are intentional

... like the turd who ran me into the barriers a few years ago.

    When that happens, we can...

    • turn the other cheek
    • be confrontation and contentious
    • seek first to understand, then be understood

    ... we have choices.

That turd who tried to ruin me nearly did me in...

    • I hit the barrier,
    • shredded my jersey,
    • and bled all over my arm, body and bike.

... turning the other cheek seemed like the best option

I was exhausted from the race,
    and tired of being angry.

    It was getting me nowhere.

And we want to go places...

    ... am I right?

    SCREEN TIME

    SCREEN TIME

    Sep 23, 2024 TODD BROWN

THE FIRST TIME I MONITORED MY WEEKLY SCREEN TIME, I was blown away.  How could I possibly be spending so much time looking at my phone...

... when I could be riding?!!

But, what about my Wahoo screen?

How much time do I spend looking at that?

And, if our minds can be altered by what goes in via that phone...

.... what does that say about what we see on our bike computers?

I'm doing an experiment to keep my mind fresh and clean.

Phone - no screen time before Noon.  Get the day started off unpolluted.

Wahoo - only 2 metrics, heart rate and cadence.

    Why only those two?

Well, lately I've noticed when things are getting spicy I'll look and see a high power number and think...

... Oh, that's really hard just hold that.

Meanwhile, my heart rate is ticking along way under max bpm.

Before you get all bro, are you even warmed up, yes, this is well into the ride.

What I'm hoping for is to push harder, earlier in the effort...

    ... without freakin' myself out.

As for the cadence, when really getting after it...

... it's always good to see if I'm in the RPM sweet spot.

And, it's not just the hard efforts.

Same goes for the easy days.

Often, I'll look down and see the HR is Zone 2, but the watts seem too high, and I'll back it down.

Meanwhile, I'll still be recording all the other data to look at post work out.

    In other words...

... gonna do some old school HR based training.

Nothing like the off-season to mess around.

    THE GREATEST EVENTS

    THE GREATEST EVENTS

    Sep 22, 2024 TODD BROWN

LOOKING BACK OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, some events really stand out and others are utterly forgettable.  Is there a...

... connection between memorable and forgettable?

    It's not the money.

Well, it's kind of the money.

    No it's not.

I mean the most memorable events, and were talking about racing here...

    ... definitely charge more.

    But, that's not the issue.

    Well, it kind of is.

    Here's what I mean...

... the best events deliver an experience we highly value.

So, while they may cost more...

... they are actually a bargain.

Many a time, I've come away from a "low cost" event, and felt totally ripped off.

    No bueno.

Great events, deliver on so many levels...

... we come back again and again.

It's the same with anything we invest in...

    • bikes
    • shoes
    • wetsuits
    • helmets
    • coaching

    ... we want great stuff,
    and awesome experiences.

Excellences that shocks us, like wild design

    IT FINALLY HAPPENED

    IT FINALLY HAPPENED

    Sep 21, 2024 TODD BROWN

FOR 6+ YEARS I've been mostly going it alone.  Typically, I enjoy these rides by myself.  For two reasons, it's off season, and...

... I'm the only one with a gravel bike.

    Not today.

    Seven of us,
    my main riding crew,
all saddled up for a morning of...

... pavement, dirt roads, and singletrack.

    Two, were straight up virgins,
three, rocked gravel Nationals with me,
    and the other two, well...

... we just couldn't believe it had finally happened.

    Why now?

    While...

    • The crit scene is alive and stomping
    • The MTB scene is still thriving
    • Gravel is exploding

... and bar to bar, legit road races are d e a d.

And, that is exactly what the mass start gravel circus...

    • elbow rubbing
    • wheel sucking
    • real attacking

... offers everyone who pins on a number.

    Excitement.

    I could barely control myself.

    Rather than ask after every...

    • serpentine single track
    • screaming downhill
    • berm-ripping turn

... I contained myself and just asked one question of the two virgins.

    How would describe gravel riding?

    Contestant #1: Exhilarating.

    How so?

Well, we were flying across that false flat at speeds I never encountered on my mountain bike.

    Contestant #2: New challenges.

    Like what?

I'm just not used to my wheels drifting in almost every single turn.

    Should everybody take up gravel?

    No.

Only those looking for exhilarating new challenges.

Now, for a dose of reality.

In the olden days, when it was just lil' ol' me on these Saturday mornings, I looked forward to patching together an amalgam of all kinds of different surfaces...

... and occasionally score some new way to get around these parts.

    As of today,
with me being the slowest of my pals...

... a new era is dawning in my gravel world.

The zen-like qualities melt away when the group is together,
and new fitness gains with the accompanying skill required to go fast...

... could create a startling performance advance.

A lot like this super spooky kit.

A RULE OF THUMB FOR POLARIZED TRAINING

A RULE OF THUMB FOR POLARIZED TRAINING

    Sep 20, 2024 TODD BROWN

POLARIZED TRAINING IS REALLY POWERFUL.  But, human nature and our inherent need to overachieve gives all of us an equal opportunity to really screw up what...

... could be a game changer.

    The basics are to train...

    • crazy hard a little bit of the time
    • superduper easy most of the time

    ... pretty simple, right?

    Here's how I do it:

    • Kill it twice a week
    • Cruise it the rest of the time
    • Keep the hard days far apart or back to back

Here's the rule of thumb, that most people get wrong...

... the easy, crusin' days are big enough volume to maintain the fitness gained on the very hard days.

For example, If my fitness on Starva is 90 after a hard Tuesday, I'm going to aim for enough volume to mostly maintain that fitness score.

It may, will drop a bit.

But, not the kind of drop I'd see if I was sendentary.

That is completely doable as long as my intensity is low enough.

For me, that low intensity is almost entirely Zone 2.

Following this protocol, allows me to hit it hard again...

... and bump the fitness up.

    The results increased performance...

    ... are terrifying.

    Just like this hair-raising kit.

YOU LOST THAT TAPER FEELING... WHOA, THAT...

YOU LOST THAT TAPER FEELING... WHOA, THAT...

    Sep 19, 2024 TODD BROWN

I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU, because you get it.  However, we've all got a friend or three who need to be hit upside the helmet...

... when it comes to tapering.

    This week it hit me.

Exactly how to explain what tapering feels like.

I was doing shoulder presses with 200 lb. dumbbells in each hand...

... it might have been less weight than that, but that's not the point.

The point is I had a good, heavy piece of metal in each hand.

    The resistance was very real.

After I plopped the weights back down,
I reached up above my head to grab something.

    There it was.

    My hand shot up,
    with zero effort.

That my fine lycra-loving friends is...

... exactly what proper tapering feels like.

    On raceday.

    We shoot....

    • uphills
    • off the front
    • rocking all out in a sprint

    ... with zero perceived effort.

    Truly magical.

We should feel that good when the...

    • stress of heavy training loads
    • grind of 9-5 hustling for money
    • nights of of too little sleep and rest

... are left behind the final week or so before the A race.

    On that day,
    for that moment,
    we are SCARY FAST!

Which is exactly how I plan to be at the Filthy 50 Costume Race.

    At least the scary part.

    In this frighteningly rad kit.

    IF YOU BUILD IT...

    IF YOU BUILD IT...

    Sep 18, 2024 TODD BROWN

WE DON'T DO THIS ENOUGH, at least I don't.  But, since I just did it again for the first time in ages, I can tell you for sure...

... there is sheer joy in building up a bike.

Rather than accept the spec'd parts,
we pick out what we really want,
in the exact size and ratio.

In the recent build, I went over the...

    • crank length
    • cassette size
    • and front chain ring

... to get exactly what I wanted.

    It's perfect.

    • 46 up front
    • an 11-40 in the back
    • a 2x Classified rear hub

To figure out the gear ratios, you can be a math wiz or simply go to...

     https://www.bikecalc.com/archives/gear-ratios.html#google_vignette

... and geek out for hours.

Taking the time to get everything right for me was...

    ... super fun and rewarding.

    Oh, and fast as hell.

    Which reminds me...

... Noel created a truly badass Halloween Kit.

SHOULD WE EVER EASE OFF THE GAS?

SHOULD WE EVER EASE OFF THE GAS?

    Sep 17, 2024 TODD BROWN

I GOT A GOOD LESSON RACING a while back.  The finish was coming up fast, I was in perfect position, there was no way I was going to lose...

    ... until I did.

    It surprised me, then...

... I got really hacked off at myself.

    Can you relate?

The kind of anger when I just pedal off and mumble uncouth language under my breath...

... and don't want to be around anybody.

    What happened?

    So dumb...

    • I thought I had it won
    • eased off the pedals
    • started to relax

    ... and got passed.

    It was so close,
    we had the same time.

    But, a dramatically different result.

Should we ever ease off just because

    • things are going well
    • our goals are on track
    • the top is within reach

... it's all going according to plan?

Or, should we push through until...

... we've conquered what we set out to accomplish?

    ===

Working hard to get to the top we don't typically need a jacket,
that's for the way down while we revel in our glory.

THAT SOUNDS TERRIBLE, SIGN ME UP

THAT SOUNDS TERRIBLE, SIGN ME UP

    Sep 16, 2024 TODD BROWN

JUST PINGED A BUDDY about riding this week.  I'd have my girl call his girl, but our girls already think we are weird.  The one day that lines up for each of us...

    ... sounds terrible.

    We're doing his work out...

    • 25 minute warm up
    • 1 minute all out up a hill
    • spin around the loop and do it 10 times

    ... and I love it.

It looks like a sure fire way to see stars, and

    ... possible vomit.

This is why it's so crucial to have faster friends,
    people that are way better,
    putting us to shame.

There is a 0% I'd do that workout on my own.

I mean, I'd roll out with the structure in mind, but...

... I'd never go as deep and hard on my own.

    That's crazy!
