YES, THE GREAT EDDY MERCKX KEPT CYCLING EXCELLENCE SIMPLE WITH HIS FAMOUS PILES OF MILES method. But, don't be fooled into thinking riding and only riding will make you a better rider. It's critical to have a number 2, too.
Almost any number 2 will work for the simple fact that cycling is such a limited range of motion.
If you haven't done a few sprints around the field catching a frisbee lately... or done any kind of side to side accelerations, you're gonna be in for a big shock when you go to show off your superfitness. Sure, you'll outlast everybody... and the next day you'll feel like you've been in a car wreck, or worse, you might actually be in traction of some sort - like my bro-in-law who tore his achilles at the family turkey bowl.
Such is the nature of this greatest, numberonest sport of ours.
It's awesomely limited.
Meaning you've got to have a number 2, and almost anything will do.
I like surfing and paddleboarding for the the balance and core work and upperbody strength. My pal JC plays tennis. PV still does all his gymnastics. NM likes her running and hiking. AS does serious construction on his house.
The list is endless.
There's another benefit besides better overall strength and fitness. Number 2 will work on your brain. Giving you new ways to solve problems on the bike - you'll see things different. When the bike training gets a little stale - and it does - you can increase your number 2 and keep your fitness.
This year I've added a number 3, which has made numbers 1 and 2 even better... coach Loran has helped make my core much stronger and I see the results standing on the pedals for long periods of time while I climb, in my stability when sprinting, and my ability to pop up fast when surfing.
