SOMEWHERE FAR ALONG THIS ROAD
AT THE END OF MY ROAD THE ASPHALT TURNS TO GRAVEL, THEN DIRT. There's a low white metal barricade with a few reflectors. Beyond that it drops straight off. This wouldn't be too bad if it was at the top of a hill...
... but it's at the bottom.
Just the other night I was bombing that hill with abandon, when I started to ease on the brakes.
I kept accelerating.
I pulled harder.
Nothing.
The white gravel, dirt and white barricade were fast approaching.
Just before impact, I unclipped my pedals...
... only to find myself laying in bed, breathing hard.
I never crash.
Well, rarely.
It's not that Dreaming Diesel's skills leak into reality. But, it did get me thinking about the best way to explain how to go fast.
The great Phil Jackson coached Michael Jordan with these words, Let the game come to you.
I think it's the same way with going fast on a bike. Whether it's a fast, flowy single track or a long straight sprint, we have to learn to let it come to us.
Gravity is going to bring that turn.
The bunch is going to bring the finish line.
When we stop chasing the trail or the sprint everything slows down. It's weird, but true. For me, my heart rate is lower. Confidence is higher. Everything is better...
... and a lot more fun.
