WHEN A BOY BECOMES A MAN

WHEN A BOY BECOMES A MAN

IT'S REALLY HARD TO TELL WHEN A BOY BECOMES A MAN.  There he was... still looking boyish, but possessing all the power and confidence of an immerging man.

Young Kevin.

Kevin, what are your plans for the summer.

I'm leaving Wednesday for Europe, racing Whichchingadery, Luz Van Vluz...  names I can't remember nor pronounce except... Worlds, and the Baby Giro.

Which reminded me of the first time I saw him... jumping into our local group ride, all legs and arms whirling with enthusiasm... on a Saturday morning not unlike today. 13ish?

It was great to see him and catch up a bit before he goes off to ride with the best in the world.

I noticed something else on the ride today.  Aside from being a larger ride than usual, there were a lot of other kids... 20ish year olds.  And, that's a great thing to see.

Kids on bikes.

Out in the real world.

The physical one.

The one where you can feel the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin, the blood in your veins.  The one where a wrong move can end badly, and the right move be exhilarating beyond belief.

And none of us were staring at dumb screens, like addicts, searching for a dopamine hit.

The only high we were getting was adrenalin.  The only sounds, real conversations and gears... with serious huffingandpuffing mixed in.

I'll take the analog world over the digital one... every single day!

Feeling like a boy.

On a bike.

And, speaking of sun on your skin... if you're looking for some good protection, try out Arm Coolers.
