WAS IT BAD LUCK OR BAG PLANNING?

I GOT SECOND TONIGHT, by less than a second.  In fact, the podium girl stopped us before letting us ascend because the computer showed the exact same time...

... 30 minutes earlier I showed some poor sportsmanship.

Arriving late to the race, I'd grabbed my bike and not even checked my tire pressure...

... anxious to warmup, I'd made a mistake.

Off we went.

After swapping the lead 4 times over a challenging course, I'd finally maneuvered into the lead with 4 miles to go.  The singletrack was so skinny it would be impossible to pass.

I had about 10 seconds.

Just after I wiggled past a younger racer I'd been battling with I could feel sprinkles on the backs of my calves.

Nooooooooooooooooooo.

Rounding a turn with speed, the back tire splashed around.

I hoped it wasn't so, but the next turn confirmed...

... I was losing pressure fast.

There was no choice but to lean forward transferring my weight to the front wheel, and slow down.  

Through the trees, I could see the finish line was so close...

... too close to stop and plug the leak.

Three of us exited the forest wheeltowheel and sprinted for the the line a 100 yeards away....

... missed it by this much.

The congratulation was brief.

I was pissed.

It's true.

Not my best moment.

After I cooled down I sought out the winner and gave him a proper congratulations.  

In truth, we'd had a great battle.  Him besting me on the climbs, me passing on the descents...

... there really isn't anything more fun than that.
