WAR AND PEACE - A TALE ON TWO WHEELS

I WAS FINALLY, FINALLY!, CAUGHT UP ON WORK AND SLEEP and planning to head south and catch the evervicious Swami's Ride.

When I say evervicious, I mean it.

There is no flat group ride that comes close to sustaining the speeds we manage.

28-30mph, the whole way.

The plan was to get on down south and catch the group as they clear the southern entrance to Camp Pendleton, then roar on back up the coast and home.

Twasn't to be.

War games.

A young man met me with a nasty road block and a winning smile politely blocked the way.

Sorry sir, road is closed.

No prob. War games?

Yes sir.

Where are you from?

Texas, sir.

Stationed here?

Up north in Seal Beach, sir.

Is that a carrier out there, it looks weird.

Yes sir, it's a carrier. Smaller, though. It carries helos.

Do you work on it?

No sir, I work on a ship designed to hunt mines.

Heading back, I was grateful for this young man.

There's always next week.

He'll be gone.

And we'll continue to enjoy the peaceful fruits of his work.
