THE REAL MEANING OF ZONE 1

THE REAL MEANING OF ZONE 1

I WALK A LOT.  I also ride a lot.  Walks are always Zone 1 for me.  Some rides are, too.  This morning, surrounded in mountains and snow, I realized...

... I was walking with purpose.

What is the real purpose of Zone 1?

One of my early coaches called Zone 1 a Rinse Ride, because the legs feel clean and ready to go afterwards.

There is a mental rinsing which always accompanies the physical rinsing and today I realized...

... I didn't have to be lazy about it.

Once the wandering legs and thoughts subside, it is a wonderful time to consider all I have to be grateful for.

Sometimes the list is rapid and unending, other times I struggle to have any gratitude in my heart...

... it's a signal to extend the walk or ride.

On my way back, I came up with an acronym for my zone focus:

  • Gratitude is Zone 1
  • Efficiency is zone 2 - pedal stroke, speed, aero
  • Long is Zone 3 - much of my 1.5+ hours racing is done in this zone
  • Short is Zone 4 - up to 90 mins of racing is typically here
  • Sprint is Zone 5 - finish of a race, get up a hill, technical climbs

I hope that GELSS with you...
