REMINDED OF THE FINISH
WE THINK WE'LL BE HERE FOREVER, that there will always be another race to do, an adventure to have...
... a mountain to climb.
Maybe.
We drove to San Diego today to attend the funeral of our son-in-law's grampa.
That may seem like a stretch, but when your kid marries into a solid family everyone gets connected...
... and we loved this old man.
On the way down, we zoomed by a booming fire on Camp Pendleton...
... the smoke blowing across the freeway.
During the service our grandson was full of energy...
... and I volunteered to take him outside.
It was hot and gusty.
Fire weather.
We ran around the church grounds, into the bushes and out, up and down the steep grassy hill.
He's three,
with all the blessings to experience a wonderful life.
Like Grampa Wayne.
I missed most of the stories the family shared, but that didn't matter because...
- beautiful, large family
- a million friends who he'd touched
- good with God, true to the love of his life
... I already know how his story ends.
Planning to zip home, I plugged in Maps only to find our 40 minute drive was now 2 hours and rerouted around the morning's fire...
... which was now burning across the freeway, on both sides.
As we finally drove into our little town, we could see smoke and then flames consuming homes.
We don't know how long it's going to take to get home,
or how quickly things can drastically change.
Kiss your babies,
love you lovers,
be good to all.
