POWER METERS CORRUPT AND ABSOLUTE POWER METERS...
THE LITTLE OL' POWER METER, oh has it corrupted my good friend's approach to racing. Poor guy. I discovered this incorrect thinking when he related his latest attempt at a most difficult race...
... a mountainous error.
On the way back tonight...
How'd your last attempt go?
I had a good day, finished strong. No cramps.
That's great!
Yeah, except I got dropped on the climb.
The KOM?
No, Strawberry.
Now, I've done this race. And I've ridden that climb. It's huge. 30 miles from bottom to top and many thousands of feet gained...
... and it's not even the KOM climb!
I was blunt, because I love him.
You gotta climb more.
I put out good power.
Yeah, on the flats.
Isn't power, power?
And that's why I say power meters corrupt. This cat thinks power is power. It's not...
... because power is different in each riding position.
No, you have to train the position. You've need to spend a lot more training on terrain as close as possible to what you'll be racing.
Really?
Yes, all your Saturdays leading up the that race you must be climbing big long climbs.
But, I climb a lot on Saturdays.
Not like that race. We just have punchy 5-20 minute climbs around here. It's better than nothing, but not like a 60-90 minute climb. That takes getting use to, slightly different use of your leg muscles. Your back and core are activated differently. Different rhythms. Cadence.
Hmmmmm.
You gotta train the position to be in position to win.
That's power!
You know what else is power?

This light combo is perfect for road riding in the dark. The thing I love is all the complaints other riders give me for the retina burning tail light.
And the headlight is plenty bright as well.
