NOT ENOUGH F.R.O. BRO

THE FIRST TIME I heard of F.R.O., was on some prototype tires Intense Cycles had me test. I thought, that's cool...
... a special designation.
Clearly, I misunderstood what F.R.O. meant.
I'll tell ya the adventure first.
About a week into testing, I climbed to the top of our biggest mountain.
About a 4000' climb,
which means a 4000' descent.
It is a screamer.
Lots of straights,
hitting upwards of 45 mph,
braking super hard into the turns.
Towards the bottom,
something didn't feel right.
I stopped.
The tire tread was delaminating,
grotesquely bulging.
Coulda died?
Maybe.
The prototype tire,
intended For Race Only...
... wasn't ready.
I was reminded of this today on my MTB.
Stomping up a hill, I heard the sad Ting! of a spoke snapping.
I asked myself...
... What the heck are you thinking riding your race wheels every, single, day?!!
Which begs the question...
... Should we invest in F.R.0. gear?
What is truly F.R.O. worthy?
For my money, and it's real money...
- Tires
- Wheels
- Complete bike
... in that order.
A duplicate of our race bike, we just beat the daylights out of and a F.R.O. bike we bust out once a week and at the races.
After that, as proven today, training wheels, even as great and amazing as today's wheels are, a set of trainers are a really good idea, especially for the off-road scene.
At a very minimum, some fresh rubber a week out, is always a good idea.
