FOLLOWING MY NOSE

OUR DOG HAZEL USED TO DRIVE ME CRAZY. Now you may wonder how a sweet, loving, little Beagle could get under The Old Diesel’s lycracovered skin... frankly I wondered the same thing many a time. But, I think I figured it out on my ride today...

... by simply following my nose.

Ya see, sometimes for lesser developed humans such as I, it’s the personalities most alike that clash the strongest.

What was our family treasure’s greatest sin?

The moment that front door opened, she was gone. Full speed. Up the street. Gone for hours. She had no control over her nose’s call of the wild.

Alas, I am no different.

The moment I dropped Surfergirl off at the airport last night was like leaving the front door open. For sure, I would ride all day and simply follow my nose...

... starting with a very hot pursuit after my first query, meeting the crew at the corner.

They were off to a horrendous hundred. They begged me to keep on... but that was never my plan, hence the gravel bike.

I simply wanted to say Howdy and get a towed up to the wild that was calling me. From there...

... just followed my nose.

If done correctly, as today was, you're bound to find a few new paths and options. These really are my favorite rides. Alone, on the hunt. Phone off. Just me and my thoughts. This is how we rejuvenate our superpowers.

Sometimes I feel for the suckers who can't be a moment without some sort of distraction... running, riding, hiking with crud plugged in their ears.

Dogs don't do that.

Nor should we...

... better to tap into our disobedient, singleminded, slave to our nose, sense of adventure. Much better.

... get out your calendar, and pick a date to just roll out with no particular place to go. All day. Just grab your wallet and get out that front door.
