DOWN 6 LBS + A HACK
RACING AT ALTITUDE has challenges all on it's own. Besides the obvious, the weather can be extremely unpredictable. There really is...
... no substitute for just being up there.
I've tried 'em all.
Altitude tent,
√.
Sauna or smokin' hot baths,
√.
Riding when it's a million degrees,
√.
That last one, I did today.
Laid out a pretty challenging route to simulate the 'A' race...
- 80 miles
- 8000' of vert
- 90º w/high humidity
... and boy, was I suffering in that heat.
Context please.
Okay...
- I rolled out weighing 163.6
- Drank 6 bottles + a popsicle
- Got home, ate a ton of frozen acai + 20 ounces Liquid IV + 16 ounces chocolate milk
... then, got on the scale en route to shower.
157.8!
Was it good altitude training?
Well, it was hot.
More importantly, I was forced to push through when I just wanted to quit.
HR high,
Watts low.
Was it a good readiness test?
Yes, I think so...
- 100'/mile elevation gain
- Blistering heat
- 13 mph ave.
... exactly the speed I need to turn in two weeks.
Time to recover and taper.
Oh, about that hack.
The pic above is a 3-gallon container...
- frozen Sambazon acai
- 100 servings
- $161
... Walmart.com ships it with dry ice.
Couldn't wait to get home and start scooping to my hearts content today and cool my core while getting in carbs.
