DEATH AND RACING
WHAT'S WITH DEATH AND RACING? My pal Brian is off to run (run! not ride) 100 freakin' miles. Ironman starts off with a 2 mile swim in the open ocean. For most competitors, Unbound's 200 miles are so outrageous...
... they are thrilled if they can finish.
Do we really believe...
... What doesn't kill me makes me stronger?
Why do we say...
... I'll rest when I'm dead?
What is the draw to push and push?
For example, 3 days after my surgery...
- I woke with my right eye almost swollen shut
- a nagging, persistent headache
- and a lot of fatigue
... did it keep me from going out for an afternoon spin today?.
Nope.
Why do we ignore our bodies, doctors, family, friends...
... and keep charging?
For me, and I'm guessing you...
- movement is the default
- sunshine is the antidote
- gulping air is euphoric
... this is how we live.
We might rest when we die,
the overwhelming challenge might make us stronger...
.. in truth, a lot of racing is discovering how mighty we really are.
