AN ATHEIST, A GOD-FEARER, AND GRAVEL RACER WALKED INTO AN EXPO
HAULING DOWN THE FREEWAY to get to the BWR Expo this morning, I thought a rather strange thought. And, I think it might be true for the simple fact...
... I'm laser focused on so few things.
I'm boring.
So you can imagine the thrill get to talk to real people, in real life...
... about atheism.
Because, here's sitch.
I can talk all day about...
- endurance sports
- building a brand
- my familiy
- religion
... my convictions, not necessarily in that order.
As a wise man once said...
One person's convictions,
are just boring as heck to everyone else.
This truly might be one of the greatest challenges we face by spending...
... so much time alone, training.
Especially, for those addicted to filling our remaining free time with scrolling, or binging YouFlix.
Our chances to connect deeply with others are fleeting.
So, there I am catching up with Carlitos, talking about his mother's passing, my brush with death last year, the miracles of our children.
And, he says it.
I'm atheist.
Really?
We dove into the how, where, who, what, where and why of his conversion.
Fascinating.
No God?
Well, I believe in a higher power.
Ok, that might not be atheism?
Yes, but, it's where I am.
It was a great conversation between to brothers of the endurance faith.
Then, no joke, the couple in the spot next to me in the expo comes over and we're sitting there talking about the day.
Somehow, atheism comes up again.
Oh, yeah, I was raised a Catholic, but it wasn't working for me because it didn't make logical sense.
Now, this cat, is about the same age as our oldest, so it was really interesting to get his younger take on religion in general, and God specifically.
So, no God?
Nope.
But what about the sunrise, an old growth forest, a child's first breath?
It doesn't add up to God, for me.
Each of these conversations, were at least an hour long.
Respectful.
Honest.
Raw.
The first time in quite a while I haven't felt bored,
or been bored.
I'll tell ya this, though.
My guess is each of us, probably on the terrible hike-a-bike after 55 grueling miles...
... would like to have the hand of God give us a good push.
